In order to obtain more reliable data for the information on the ground, a new site Investigation method is proposed, in which seismic waves (S-waves) generated by the Swedish Ram Sounding Test (SRS) are used. It is indicated that the energy transferred from the hammer to the rod in SRS's is much more stable, compared to SPT's. A series of SRS with measurements of seismic waves at the ground surface were carried out to clarify the characteristics of seismic wave propagation in the ground. As the results of comparison between seismic S-wave amplitudes and $N_d$ (blow count for 20 cm penetration in SRS), it was found that amplitudes of S-waves generated by SRS correlate well with $N_d$. The amplitude of the S-wave is thought to be more adequate parameter for the soil strength and rigidity than $N_d$.
This study utilises repeated numerical tests to understand the effects of variable near-surface conditions on time-lapse seismic surveys. The numerical tests were aimed at reproducing the significant scattering observed in field experiments conducted at the Naylor site in the Otway Basin for the purpose of $CO_2$ sequestration. In particular, the variation of elastic properties of both the top soil and the deeper rugose clay/limestone interface as a function of varying water saturation were investigated. Such tests simulate the measurements conducted in dry and wet seasons and to evaluate the contribution of these seasonal variations to seismic measurements in terms of non-repeatability. Full elastic pre-stack modelling experiments were carried out to quantify these effects and evaluate their individual contributions. The results show that the relatively simple scattering effects of the corrugated near-surface clay/limestone interface can have a profound effect on time-lapse surveys. The experiments also show that the changes in top soil saturation could potentially affect seismic signature even more than the corrugated deeper surface. Overall agreement between numerically predicted and in situ measured normalised root-mean-square (NRMS) differences between repeated (time-lapse) 2D seismic surveys warrant further investigation. Future field studies will include in situ measurements of the elastic properties of the weathered zone through the use of 'micro Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP)' arrays and very dense refraction surveys. The results of this work may impact on other areas not associated with $CO_2$ sequestration, such as imaging oil production over areas where producing fields suffer from a karstic topography, such as in the Middle East and Australia.
After an earthquake, a quick seismic assessment of a structure can facilitate the recovery of operations, and consequently, improve structural resilience. Especially for facilities that play a key role in rescue or refuge efforts (e.g., hospitals and power facilities), or even economically important facilities (e.g., high-tech factories and financial centers), immediately resuming operations after disruptions resulting from an earthquake is critical. Therefore, this study proposes a prompt post-earthquake seismic evaluation method that uses displacement and acceleration measurements taken from real structural responses that resulted during an earthquake. With a prepared pre-earthquake capacity curve of a structure, the residual seismic capacity can be estimated using the residual roof drift ratio and stiffness. The proposed method was verified using a 6-story steel frame structure on a shaking table. The structure was damaged during a moderate earthquake, after which it collapsed completely during a severe earthquake. According to the experimental results, a reasonable estimation of the residual seismic capacity of structures can be performed using the proposed post-earthquake seismic evaluation method.

This study aims at evaluating composite moment frame structures (CFS) using wavelet analysis of the displacement behavior of these structures. Five seismic damage mitigation systems' models of 9-story CFS are examined namely, basic (Model 1), reinforced (Model 2), buckling restrained braced (BRB) (Model 3), lead rubber bearing (LRB) (Model 4), and composite (Model 5) moment frames. A novel integration between continuous and discrete wavelet transforms is designed to estimate the wavelet power energy and variance of measurements' behaviors. The behaviors of the designed models are evaluated under influence of four seismic loads to study the dynamic performance of CFS in the frequency domain. The results show the behaviors of models 3 and 5 are lower than other models in terms of displacement and frequency performances. Model 3 has been shown lower performances in terms of energy and variance wavelets along the monitoring time; therefore, Model 3 demonstrates superior performance and low probability of failure under seismic loads. Furthermore, the wavelet variance analysis is shown a powerful tool that can be used to assess the CFS under seismic hazards.
While there exists a relatively large body of technical information for the engineered design of wood-frame buildings to resist seismic ground motions, the quantitative assessment of seismic resistance of conventional houses built by prescriptive requirements is less well understood. Forintek Canada Corp., in collaboration with other research and industry partners, has embarked on a research project to address this topic. This paper will report on the seismic shake table tests of a full-scale wood-frame building. The two-story specimen, $6m{\times}6m$ in plan, was built on the seismic shake table at Tongji University in Shanghai, China, according to Part 9 of the 1995 National Building Code of Canada and shaken uni-directionally in each of the two principal directions. Three different seismic table motions were applied at increasing peak ground motion amplitudes up to 0.40 and 0.50 g. The specimen was repaired after the above sets of seismic table motions, and successive runs were conducted for increased door openings. Measurements included specimen accelerations, displacements and anchorage forces. Static stiffness of the specimen was measured at low force levels, and natural frequencies were measured after each seismic loading stage by applying low-level random excitation. The results presented consist of the capacity spectra of the shake table tests, changes in specimen stiffness and natural frequencies with increasing seismic loading. These results and those from other recent shake table tests elsewhere will be compared with simplified engineering calculations based on codified values of strength, and on that basis preliminary conclusions will be drawn on the adequacy of the current code provisions and design guides in Canada and the USA for conventional wood-frame construction.
Time-lapse seismic surveys make repeated seismic surveys at different stages of oil production of a hydrocarbon reservoir to monitor changes in reservoir like fluid saturation. Since the repeatable surface seismic measurements can identify fluid types and map fluid saturations, oil and gas companies can make much more informed decision during not only production but also drilling and development. If time-lapse seismic surveys compare 3D seismic surveys, the time-lapse surveys are widely called as 4D seismic. A meaningful time-lapse interpretation is based on the repeatability of seismic surveys, which mainly depends on improved positioning and reduced noise (if surveys were designed properly through a feasibility study). The time-lapse interpretation can help oil and gas companies to maximize oil and gas recovery. This paper discusses about time-lapse seismic surveys mainly focused on feasibility, repeatability, data processing and interpretation.
This study was concerned on the application of a hybrid approach for analyzing the buried pipelines deformations subjected to earthquakes. Nonlinear time-history analysis of Finite Element (FE) model of buried pipelines, which was modeled using laboratory data, has been performed via selected earthquakes. In order to verify the FE model with experiments, a statistical test was done which demonstrated a good conformity. Then, the FE model was developed and the optimum intersection angle of pipeline and fault was obtained via genetic algorithm. Transient seismic strain of buried pipeline in the optimum intersection angle of pipeline and fault was investigated considering the pipes diameter, the distance of pipes from fault, the soil friction angles and seismic response duration of buried pipelines. Also, a two-layer perceptron Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was trained using results of FE model, and a nonlinear relationship was obtained to predict the bending strain of buried pipelines based on the pipes diameter, intersection angles of the pipelines and fault, the soil friction angles, distance of pipes from the fault, and seismic response duration; whereas it contains a wide range of initial input data without any requirement to laboratory measurements.
Frequency content of seismic waves observed in field seismic survey in Korea has almost not exceeded 4kHz(wave length 1m). The limited frequency content not only restricts the minimum size of objects which can be surveyed in seismic tomogrpahic application, but also makes a fundamental limit in the resolution of tomogram. This paper shows the resonable result obtained by confirmimg and resolving the problems which can be occured m measuring procedure for the small - sized section through field application. Seismic tomographic field survey was performed for a concrete construction for railroad bridge in Korea, and to this the tomographic measurements for the stone-build foundation construction for a bell house of church in Germany were compared.
The relationship between the seismic velocity and RQD was estimated using the RQD data obtained from the optical borehole image processing and drill core logs and the seismic velocity measured from the PS logging. The seismic velocity and crack aperture show a high correlation in the granite in Yuseong area and banded gneiss in Paldang area. However, such a relationship cannot be found in the sedimentary rock in Sabuk area. In the sedimentary rock of Sabbuk area, the seismic velocity shows widespread distribution especially in the 0∼20mm range of accumulated crack aperture probably because the wide distribution of fracture zone in coaly shale results in the inaccurate measurements of the crack aperture.

Dynamic measurements are used rather sparingly to determine the elastic moduli of rock cores and modulus values are not much utilized in design practice. The reason seems to result from the general perception that values obtained by dynamic measurement are much higher (about 10 times) than those determined statically. This paper presents results from dynamic and static tests on rock cores. The findings are : 1) elastic moduli can be consistently determined by laboratory seismic testing. 2) nonlear deformation characteristic of rock cores was tentatively proposed with variation in elastic modulus with strain.
