Segmentation plays an important role in the field of image processing and computer vision. Intuitionistic fuzzy C-means (IFCM) clustering algorithm emerged as an effective technique for image segmentation in recent years. However, standard fuzzy C-means (FCM) and IFCM algorithms are sensitive to noise and initial cluster centers, and they ignore the spatial relationship of pixels. In view of these shortcomings, an improved algorithm based on IFCM is proposed in this paper. Firstly, we propose a modified non-membership function to generate intuitionistic fuzzy set and a method of determining initial clustering centers based on grayscale features, they highlight the effect of uncertainty in intuitionistic fuzzy set and improve the robustness to noise. Secondly, an improved nonlinear kernel function is proposed to map data into kernel space to measure the distance between data and the cluster centers more accurately. Thirdly, the local spatial-gray information measure is introduced, which considers membership degree, gray features and spatial position information at the same time. Finally, we propose a new measure of intuitionistic fuzzy entropy, it takes into account fuzziness and intuition of intuitionistic fuzzy set. The experimental results show that compared with other IFCM based algorithms, the proposed algorithm has better segmentation and clustering performance.

In computer graphics, 3D mesh segmentation is a challenging research field. This paper presents a 3D mesh model segmentation algorithm that focuses on removing exterior salient parts from the original 3D mesh model based on prominent feature points and marching plane. To begin with, the proposed approach uses multi-dimensional scaling to extract prominent feature points that reside on the tips of each exterior salient part of a given mesh. Subsequently, a set of planes intersect the 3D mesh; one is the marching plane, which start marching from prominent feature points. Through the marching process, local cross sections between marching plane and 3D mesh are extracted, subsequently, its corresponding area are calculated to represent local volumes of the 3D mesh model. As the boundary region of an exterior salient part generally lies on the location at which the local volume suddenly changes greatly, we can simply cut this location with the marching plane to separate this part from the mesh. We evaluated our algorithm on the Princeton Segmentation Benchmark, and the evaluation results show that our algorithm works well for some categories.
In this paper, we propose an algorithm for the frequency channel segmentation using peaks and valleys in spectrogram. The frequency channel segments means that local groups of channels in frequency domain that could be arisen from the same sound source. The proposed algorithm is based on the smoothed spectrum of the input sound. Peaks and valleys in the smoothed spectrum are used to determine centers and boundaries of segments, respectively. To evaluate a suitableness of the proposed segmentation algorithm before that the grouping stage is applied, we compare the synthesized results using ideal mask with that of proposed algorithm. Simulations are performed with mixed speech signals with narrow band noises, wide band noises and other speech signals.

While segmenting "complex" images (with multiple objects, many details, etc.) we experienced a need to explore new ways for time-efficient and meaningful image segmentation. In this paper we propose a new technique for image segmentation which has only one variable for controlling the expected number of segments. The algorithm focuses on the treatment of pixels in transition zones between various label distributions. Results of the proposed algorithm (e.g. on the Berkeley image segmentation dataset) are comparable to those of GMM or HMM-EM segmentation, but are achieved with significantly reduced computation time.
Since the region segmentation at high resolution contains most of viable semantic object contours in an image, the bottom-up approach for image segmentation is appropriate for the application such as MPEG-4 which needs to preserve semantic object contours. However, the conventioal region merging methods, that follow the region segmentation, have poor performance in keeping low-contrast semantic object contours. In this paper, we propose an image segmentation algorithm based on classified region merging. The algorithm pre-segments an image with a large number of small regions, and also classifies it into several classes having similar gradient characteristics. Then regions only in the same class are merged according to the boundary weakness or statisticsal similarity. The simulation result shows that the proposed image segmentation preserves semantic object contours very well even with a small number of regions.

The present image segmentation is what user want to segment image and has been studied for technology in composition of segment object with other images. In this paper, we propose a method of novel semi-automatic image segmentation using gradual region merging and genetic algorithm. Proposed algorithm is edge detection of object using genetic algorithm after selecting object which user want. We segment region of object which user want to based on detection edge using watershed algorithm. We separated background and object in indefinite region using gradual region merge from Segment object. And, we have applicable value which user want by making interface based on GUI for efficient perform of algorithm development. In the experiments, we analyzed various images for proving superiority of the proposed method.

One major and time-consuming task in fish production is obtaining an accurate estimate of the number of fish produced. In most Nigerian farms, fish counting is performed manually. Digital image processing (DIP) is an inexpensive solution, but its accuracy is affected by noise, overlapping fish, and interfering objects. This study developed a catfish recognition and counting algorithm that introduces detection before counting and consists of six steps: image acquisition, pre-processing, segmentation, feature extraction, recognition, and counting. Images were acquired and pre-processed. The segmentation was performed by applying three methods: image binarization using Otsu thresholding, morphological operations using fill hole, dilation, and opening operations, and boundary segmentation using edge detection. The boundary features were extracted using a chain code algorithm and Fourier descriptors (CH-FD), which were used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) to perform the recognition. The new counting approach, based on the geometry of the fish, was applied to determine the number of fish and was found to be suitable for counting fish of any size and handling overlap. The accuracies of the segmentation algorithm, boundary pixel and Fourier descriptors (BD-FD), and the proposed CH-FD method were 90.34%, 96.6%, and 100% respectively. The proposed counting algorithm demonstrated 100% accuracy.

In this paper, we propose the color fuzzy decision algorithm to face segmentation in a color image. Our algorithm can segment without the user's interaction by fuzzy decision marking. And it removes small parts such as a noise using wavelet morphology in the image obtained by applying the fuzzy decision algorithm. Also, it merges and chooses the face region in each quantization image through rough sets. This video object division algorithm is shown to be superior to a conventional algorithm.

This paper proposes a new gray-level image segmentation method using GA(genetic algorithm) and an ACA(adaptive clustering algorithm). The solution in the general GA can be moving because of stochastic reinsertion, and suffer from the premature convergence problem owing to deficiency of individuals before finding the optimal solution. To cope with these problems and to reduce processing time, we propose the new GBR algorithm and the technique that resolves the premature convergence problem. GBR selects the individual in the child pool that has the fitness value superior to that of the individual in the parents pool. We resolvethe premature convergence problem with producing the mutation in the parents population, and propose the new method that removes the small regions in the segmented results. The experimental results show that the proposed segmentation algorithm gives better perfodrmance than the ACA ones in Gaussian noise environments.
The goal of this project is to achieve an accurate segmentation of the pulmonary tumors besides shortening the time and increasing the accuracy. Here, improved region growing (IRG) algorithm is introduced in order to segment the lung tumor with a sufficient accuracy in a shorter time compared to the other basics methods. This comprehensive algorithm was applied on 4 patients CT images and the results of the various steps on segmentation improvement shown 98% accuracy as compared to the basic algorithm. The combination of "multipoint growth start" produced a desirable outcome in accurately bounding the tumor. The proposed algorithm improved tumor identification by less than 13% along with a sufficient percentage of compliance accuracy.
