  • Image segmentation is a very crucial step in effective digital image processing. In the past decade, several research contributions were given related to this field. However, a general segmentation algorithm suitable for various applications is still challenging. Among several image segmentation approaches, graph-based approach has gained popularity due to its basic ability which reflects global image properties. This paper proposes a methodology to partition the image with its pixel, region and texture along with its intensity. To make segmentation faster in large images, it is processed in parallel among several CPUs. A way to achieve this is to split images into tiles that are independently processed. However, regions overlapping the tile border are split or lost when the minimum size requirements of the segmentation algorithm are not met. Here the contributions are made to segment the image on the basis of its pixel using min-cut/max-flow algorithm along with edge-based segmentation of the image. To segment on the basis of the region using a homogenous optimum cut algorithm with boundary segmentation. On the basis of texture, the object type using spectral partitioning technique is identified which also minimizes the graph cut value.

  • In on-line character recognition, to segment input character is important. This paper proposes an internal character segmentation algorithm. The internal segmentation algorithm produces candidate words by considering possible combinations of Korean alphabets. In this process, we make use of projections of strokes onto the horizontal axis to remove ambiguities among candidate words. As a result of experiments, the internal segmentation algorithm shows better performance than external segmentation algorithm as the gap between sample characters becomes smaller.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive threshold watershed algorithm, which is the method used for image segmentation and boundary detection, which extends the region on the basis of regional minimum point. First, apply adaptive thresholds to determine regional minimum points. Second, it extends the region by applying adaptive thresholds based on determined regional minimum points. Traditional watershed algorithms create over-segmentation, resulting in the disadvantages of breaking boundaries between regions. These segmentation results mainly from the boundary of the object, creating an inaccurate region. To solve these problems, this paper applies an improved watershed algorithm applied with adaptive threshold in regional minimum point search and region expansion in order to reduce over-segmentation and breaking the boundary of region. This resulted in over-segmentation suppression and the result of having the boundary of precisely divided regions. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can apply adaptive thresholds to reduce the number of segmented regions and see that the segmented boundary parts are correct.

  • Purpose: Joint label fusion (JLF) is a popular multi-atlas-based segmentation algorithm, which compensates for dependent errors that may exist between atlases. However, in order to get good segmentation results, it is very important to set the several free parameters of the algorithm to optimal values. In this study, we first investigate the feasibility of a JLF algorithm for prostate segmentation in MR images, and then suggest the optimal set of parameters for the automatic prostate segmentation by validating the results of each parameter combination. Materials and Methods: We acquired T2-weighted prostate MR images from 20 normal heathy volunteers and did a series of cross validations for every set of parameters of JLF. In each case, the atlases were rigidly registered for the target image. Then, we calculated their voting weights for label fusion from each combination of JLF's parameters (rpxy, rpz, rsxy, rsz, β). We evaluated the segmentation performances by five validation metrics of the Prostate MR Image Segmentation challenge. Results: As the number of voxels participating in the voting weight calculation and the number of referenced atlases is increased, the overall segmentation performance is gradually improved. The JLF algorithm showed the best results for dice similarity coefficient, 0.8495 ± 0.0392; relative volume difference, 15.2353 ± 17.2350; absolute relative volume difference, 18.8710 ± 13.1546; 95% Hausdorff distance, 7.2366 ± 1.8502; and average boundary distance, 2.2107 ± 0.4972; in parameters of rpxy = 10, rpz = 1, rsxy = 3, rsz = 1, and β = 3. Conclusion: The evaluated results showed the feasibility of the JLF algorithm for automatic segmentation of prostate MRI. This empirical analysis of segmentation results by label fusion allows for the appropriate setting of parameters.

  • Recently, the fuzzy theory has been adopted broadly to the applications of image processing. Especially the fuzzy clustering algorithm is adopted to image segmentation to reduce the ambiguity and the influence of noise in an image. But this needs lots of memory and execution time because of the great deal of image data. Therefore a new image segmentation algorithm is needed which reduces the memory and execution time, doesn't change the characteristices of the image, and simultaneously has the same result of image segmentation as the conventional fuzzy clustering algorithm. In this paper, for image segmentation, an extended fuzzy clustering algorithm is proposed which uses the occurence of data of the same characteristic value as the weight of the characteristic value instead of using the characteristic value directly in an image and it is proved the memory reduction and execution time reducted in comparision with the conventional fuzzy clustering algorithm in image segmentation.

  • Arabic handwriting segmentation and recognition is an area of research that has not yet been fully understood. Dealing with Arabic ligature segmentation, where the Arabic characters are connected and unconstrained naturally, is one of the fundamental problems when dealing with the Arabic script. Arabic character-recognition techniques consider ligatures as new classes in addition to the classes of the Arabic characters. This paper introduces an enhanced technique for Arabic handwriting recognition using the deep belief network (DBN) and a new morphological algorithm for ligature segmentation. There are two main stages for the implementation of this technique. The first stage involves an enhanced technique of the Sari segmentation algorithm, where a new ligature segmentation algorithm is developed. The second stage involves the Arabic character recognition using DBNs and support vector machines (SVMs). The two stages are tested on the IFN/ENIT and HACDB databases, and the results obtained proved the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm compared with other existing systems.

  • In this paper, an accurate segmentation algorithm of video dynamic background image (VDBI) based on improved wavelet transform is proposed. Based on the smooth processing of VDBI, the traditional wavelet transform process is improved, and the two-layer decomposition of dynamic image is realized by using two-dimensional wavelet transform. On the basis of decomposition results and information enhancement processing, image features are detected, feature points are extracted, and quantum ant colony algorithm is adopted to complete accurate segmentation of the image. The maximum SNR of the output results of the proposed algorithm can reach 73.67 dB, the maximum time of the segmentation process is only 7 seconds, the segmentation accuracy shows a trend of decreasing first and then increasing, and the global maximum value can reach 97%, indicating that the proposed algorithm effectively achieves the design expectation.

  • Predictive watershed transform is a popular object segmentation algorithm which achieves a speed-up by identifying image regions that are different from the previous frame and performing object segmentation only for those regions. However, incorrect segmentation is often generated by the predictive watershed transform which uses only local information in merge-split decision on boundary regions. This paper improves the predictive watershed transform to increase the accuracy of segmentation results by using the additional information about the root of boundary regions. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is processed in a block-based manner such that an image frame is decomposed into blocks and each block is processed independently of the other blocks. The block-based approach makes it easy to implement the algorithm in hardware and also permits an extension for parallel execution. Experimental results show that the proposed watershed transform produces more accurate segmentation results than the predictive watershed transform.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient marker extraction algorithm for initial image segmentation in a bottom-up segmentation scheme. The proposed algorithm generates dense markers in visually complex areas and coarse markers in visually uniform areas. which conforms to the human perceptual system. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better subjective quality for fine initial image segmentation.
