The segmentation has been performed to the data of good quality in most cases, so the adoption of previous segmentation theory to the measured data with a laser scanner does not produce good result because of the characteristics of the data with noise component. A new approach to perform the segmentation on the scanned data is introduced to deal with problems during reverse engineering process. A triangular net is generated from measured point data, and the segmentation on it is classified as plane, smooth and rough segment. The segmentation result in each segment depends on the user-defined criteria. And the difference of the segmentation between the data of good quality and the data with noise is described and analyzed with several real models. The segment boundaries selected are used to maintain the characteristics of the parts during modeling process, thus they contribute to the automation of the reverse engineering.
This paper describes a new semi-automatic segmentation algorithm based on color information. Semi-automatic segmentation mainly consists of intra-frame segmentation and inter-frame segmentation. While intra-frame segmentation extracts video objects of interest from boundary information provided by the user and intensity information of the image, inter-frame segmentation partitions the image into the video objects and background by tracking the motion of video objects. For inter-frame segmentation, color information (Y, Cb and Cr) of the current frame can be used efficiently in order to find the exact boundary of the video objects. In this paper we propose a new region growing algorithm which can maximize the ability of region differentiation, while preserving features of each color component.

Recently, advanced video coding techniques using segmentation technique have been actively researched as candidates for video coding of MPEG-4 standard. The conventional segmentation techniques are unsuitable for real-time process because they have sequential structure. In this paper, we propose a new image segmentation technique using competitive learning neural network for vector quantization. The proposed segmentation procedure consist of prefiltering, primary and secondary segmentation, and a small region ellimination process. Primary segmentation segments input image in detail. Secondary segmentation merges similar region using a repetitive FSCL(Frequency sensitive competive learning) neural network. In this process, it is possible to segment an image from high resolution to low resolution by adjusting the number of repetition. Finally, small regions are merged into adjacent regions. Experimental results show that the procedure described yields reconstructed images of reasonably acceptable quality at bit rates of 0. 25 - 0.3 bit/pel.

Pre-segmented pixels can reduce the difficulty of segmentation and promote the segmentation performance. This paper proposes a novel segmentation method based on merging texture superpixels by computing inner similarity. Firstly, we design a set of Gabor filters to compute the amplitude responses of original image and compute the texture map by a salience model. Secondly, we employ the simple clustering to extract superpixles by affinity of color, coordinates and texture map. Then, we design a normalized histograms descriptor for superpixels integrated color and texture information of inner pixels. To obtain the final segmentation result, all adjacent superpixels are merged by the homogeneity comparison of normalized color-texture features until the stop criteria is satisfied. The experiments are conducted on natural scene images and synthesis texture images demonstrate that the proposed segmentation algorithm can achieve ideal segmentation on complex texture regions.

In this paper, a new approach is proposed for the segmentation of Computed Tomography (CT) head images. The approach consists of two-stage segmentation with each stage contains two different segmentation techniques. The ultimate aim is to segment the CT head images into three classes which are abnormalities, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain matter. For the first stage segmentation, k-means and fuzzy c-means (FCM) segmentation are implemented in order to acquire the abnormalities. Whereas for the second stage segmentation, modified FCM with population-diameter independent (PDI) and expectation-maximization (EM) segmentation are adopted to obtain the CSF and brain matter. The experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed system is feasible and achieve satisfactory results.
Object segmentation is a challenging task in image processing and computer vision. In this paper, we present a visual attention based segmentation method to segment small sized interesting objects in natural images. Different from the traditional methods, we first search the region of interest by using our novel saliency-based method, which is mainly based on band-pass filtering, to obtain the appropriate frequency. Secondly, we applied the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to locate the object region. By incorporating the visual attention analysis into object segmentation, our proposed approach is able to narrow the search region for object segmentation, so that the accuracy is increased and the computational complexity is reduced. The experimental results indicate that our proposed approach is efficient for object segmentation in natural images, especially for small objects. Our proposed method significantly outperforms traditional GMM based segmentation.

With the development of films, games and animation industry, analysis and reuse of human motion capture data become more and more important. Human motion segmentation, which divides a long motion sequence into different types of fragments, is a key part of mocap-based techniques. However, most of the segmentation methods only take into account low-level physical information (motion characteristics) or high-level data information (statistical characteristics) of motion data. They cannot use the data information fully. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised framework using both low-level physical information and high-level data information of human motion data to solve the human segmentation problem. First, we introduce the algorithm of CFSFDP and optimize it to carry out initial segmentation and obtain a good result quickly. Second, we use the ACA method to perform optimized segmentation for improving the result of segmentation. The experiments demonstrate that our framework has an excellent performance.

In this paper, we firstly define a new combined segmentation measure and propose a segmentation algorithm using this measure. The combined segmentation measure is a weighted sum of intensity, motion, and a change segmentation measure that is extracted from the resulting image of the proposed change detector. The change segmentation measure is defined as an absolute change value difference between an pixel and its neighboring region from the eroded image, which results from morphological erosion filtering to eliminate many inaccurate components included in the resulting image of a conventional change detector. The change segmentation measure can be used as an efficient segmentation measure for the accurate segmentation of neighboring moving objects and static background regions. Therefore, the proposed combined segmentation measure can determine exact boundaries in the segmentation process of region-based coding even though the estimated motion vectors around the boundaries of moving objects and static background regions are inaccurate and the intensities around the boundaries are similar.
In this paper, we propose a semi-automatic segmentation method which can be used to generate video object plane (VOP) for object based coding scheme and multimedia authoring environment. Semi-automatic segmentation can be considered as a user-assisted segmentation technique. A user can initially mark objects of interest around the object boundaries and then the selected objects are continuously separated from the un selected areas through time evolution in the image sequences. The proposed segmentation method consists of two processing steps: partially manual intra-frame segmentation and fully automatic inter-frame segmentation. The intra-frame segmentation incorporates user-assistance to define the meaningful complete visual object of interest to be segmentation and decides precise object boundary. The inter-frame segmentation involves boundary and region tracking to obtain temporal coherence of moving object based on the object boundary information of previous frame. The proposed method shows stable and efficient results that could be suitable for many digital video applications such as multimedia contents authoring, content based coding and indexing. Based on this result, we have developed objects based video editing system with several convenient editing functions.

Infrared (IR) imaging has been researched for various applications such as surveillance. IR radiation has the capability to detect thermal characteristics of objects under low-light conditions. However, automatic segmentation for finding the object of interest would be challenging since the IR detector often provides the low spatial and contrast resolution image without color and texture information. Another hindrance is that the image can be degraded by noise and clutters. This paper proposes multi-level segmentation for extracting regions of interest (ROIs) and objects of interest (OOIs) in the IR scene. Each level of the multi-level segmentation is composed of a k-means clustering algorithm, an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, and a decision process. The k-means clustering initializes the parameters of the Gaussian mixture model (GMM), and the EM algorithm estimates those parameters iteratively. During the multi-level segmentation, the area extracted at one level becomes the input to the next level segmentation. Thus, the segmentation is consecutively performed narrowing the area to be processed. The foreground objects are individually extracted from the final ROI windows. In the experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using several IR images, in which human subjects are captured at a long distance. The average probability of error is shown to be lower than that obtained from other conventional methods such as Gonzalez, Otsu, k-means, and EM methods.
