  • In this paper, we propose the reduction method of the number of parameters in the segmental-feature HMM using trend quantization method. The proposed method shares the trend information of the polynomial trajectories by quantization. The trajectory is obtained by the sequence of feature vectors of speech signals and can be divided by trend and location information. The trend indicates the variation of consequent frame features, while the location points to the positional difference of the trajectories. Since the trend occupies the large portion of SFHMM, if the trend is shared, the number of parameters maybe decreases. To exploit the proposed system the experiments are performed on TIMIT corpus. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed system is roughly similar to that of previous system. Therefore, the proposed system can be considered one of parameter reduction method.

  • In this paper, we discuss the characteristics of Segmental-Feature HMM and summarize previous studies of SFHMM. There are several approaches to reduce the number of parameters in the previous studies. However, if the number of parameters decreased, the performance of systems also fell. Therefore, we consider the fast computation approach with preserving the same number of parameters. In this paper, we present the new segment comparison method to speed up the computation of SFHMM without loss of performance. The proposed method uses the three-frame calculation rather than the full(five) frames in the given segment. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed system is better than that of the previous studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior of precast segmental prestressed concrete bridge piers. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. An unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method, that can represent the interaction between tendon and concrete of prestressed concrete member, is used. A joint element is newly developed to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints. The proposed numerical method for the inelastic behavior of precast segmental prestressed concrete bridge piers is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • To overcome limitations of conventional diagnosis and planning for orthognathic surgery, surgeons have begun to use 3-dimensional (3D) virtual simulation to plan complex orthognathic surgery. In many literatures, it has shown that better surgical outcome achieved with 3D virtual simulation than that with conventional methods. But, there is still lack of data about accuracy of maxillary segmental surgery with 3D virtual simulation. The purpose of this paper was to report the case of maxillary segmental orthognathic surgery with 3D virtual simulation and to assess the actual surgical outcome. Though the result was clinically acceptable, discrepancy between 3D simulation and actual surgery was not superior compared with conventional method. The accuracy of 3D simulation surgery and intermediate wafer fabrication for maxillary segmental surgery needs to be improved. Advancement in 3D software program and careful surgical technique will make it more precise and reliable method.

  • The method of reinforced earth walls has grown remarkably and the frequency of utilization has been increased on a national scale thereafter introduced in the middle 1980s in Korea. Furthermore the construction case of the extensive Geosynthetic-Reinforced Segmental Retaining Walls had been increased. Currently, the design criterion of FHWA and NCMA mainly used in Korea suggest determining the horizontal distance of the upper/lower retaining wall based on the study results of the internal stability and the external stability of Segmental Retaining Walls but in many cases are not suitable for the actual situation in Korea. Therefore, in this study reviewed the design criterion of Geosynthetic-Reinforced Segmental Retaining Walls, performed the internal and external stability in Paju, Gyeonggi-do based on the design criterion of FHWA and NCMA, suggested the modified design criterion of FHWA with analyzing the results, and performed the stability analysis for the internal and external stability and the compound failure. Moreover for the confirmation of the modified FHWA design standard, the suggestion and the analysis of the numerical analysis approaching method using shear strength reduction technique were performed and the design cases utilized the modified FHWA design standard based on the study analysis were introduced.

  • This article presents a modified palatal pedicled incision design in anterior segmental maxillary osteotomy. This method included the circumcrevicular incisions and two vertical relaxing incisions. Then, it is different from the Couper's method with vestibular horizontal incision and other anterior segmental osteotomy techniques. The main advantages of this method are an improved visibility of surgical field and favorable preservation of palatal pedicle. A patient who had been operated by anterior segmental maxillary and mandibular osteotomy without pre operative orthodontic treatment was analyzed for advantages and complications during the intraoperative and early post operative period. There are no specific major complications such as infection, gingival recession and dehiscence. And the patient had a pleasing esthetic facial appearance.

  • In this study, an investigation on the geometry control of the precast segmental method(PSM) was performed and GEOCON was developed. It is an interactive software to control the 3-dimensional geometry of precast segmental bridges during the construction progress. Specially, this paper emphasized that the fabrication stage of the precast segment is the most important for the geometry control in the PSM and also descussed about some problems which can be overlooked in developing and using the geometry control softwares by explaining the GEOCON's characteristics. GEOCON was successfully applied to the surrounding road of Pusan harbor.

  • Post-tensioned precast segmental bridge columns have shown high level of strength and ductility, and low residual displacement, which makes them suffer minor damage after earthquake loading; however, there is still lack of confidence on their lateral response against severe seismic loading due in part to their low energy dissipation capacity. This study investigates the influence of major design factors such as post-tensioning force level, strands position, columns aspect ratio, steel jacket and mild steel ratio on seismic performance of self-centring segmental bridge columns in terms of lateral strength, residual displacement and lateral peak displacement. Seismic analyses show that increasing the continuous mild steel ratio improves the lateral peak displacement of the self-centring columns at different levels of post-tensioning (PT) forces. Such an increase in steel ratio reduces the residual drift in segmental columns with higher aspect ratio more considerably. Suggestions are proposed for the design of self-centring segmental columns with various aspect ratios at different target drifts.

  • This study investigates the performance of hollow precast segmental bridge columns with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction. The proposed triangular reinforcement details are economically feasible and rational, and facilitate shorter construction periods. The precast segmental bridge columns provides an alternative to current cast-in-place systems. We tested a model of hollow precast segmental bridge columns under a constant axial load and a quasi-static, cyclically reversed horizontal load. We used a computer program, Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology (RCAHEST), for analysis of reinforced concrete structures. The used numerical method gives a realistic prediction of performance throughout the loading cycles for hollow precast segmental bridge column specimens investigated. As a result, proposed reinforcement details for material quantity reduction was equal to existing reinforcement details in terms of required performance.
