Modem anti-ship missiles employ complex and sophisticated guidance laws to hit the target and enhance their survivability by executing additional maneuvers. However, such maneuvers may cause the target to move out of the missile seeker's Field-Of-View (FOV). Maintaining seeker lock-on during an engagement is a critical factor for missile guidance. In this paper, a guidance law switching logic that maintains seeker lock-on and a simple guidance law that keeps the target look angle of the seeker constant is proposed. The proposed method can be used for the terminal homing phase, and can be switched from any kind of guidance laws if a proper switching condition is satisfied. The minimum and maximum flight time calculation method in consideration of the missile maneuver limit and the FOV of the seeker is also provided.

This paper proposes a new guidance law, which considers the Field of View (FOV) of the seeker when a missile has a strapdown seeker mounted instead of a gimbal seeker. When a strapdown seeker, which has a narrow FOV, is used for tracking a target, the FOV of the seeker is an important consideration for guidance performance metrics such as miss distance. We propose a new guidance law called hybrid guidance (HG) to address the shortcomings of conventional guidance laws such as proportional navigation guidance (PNG), which cannot maintain lock-on conditions against high speed targets due to the narrow FOV of the strapdown seeker. The aim of the HG law is to null miss distance and to maintain the look angle within the FOV of the strapdown seeker. In order to achieve this goal, we combine two guidance laws in the HG law. One is a PNG law to null the LOS rate, and the other is a sliding mode guidance (SMG) law derived to keep the look angle within the FOV by employing a Lyapunov-like function with a sliding mode control methodology. We also propose a method to switch these two guidance laws at certain look angles for better guidance performance.

The rosette-scan seeker is a device mounted on the infrared guided missile. It offers the positions and iamges of target to missiles servo system by scanning a space about target in rosette pattern with a single detector. An instantaneous field of view (IFOV), which is a diameter of a detector moving along the path of the rosette pattern, has the property that its smaller size provide the less interference of background signals and detector noise. If its size is too small to voer the total field of view (TFOV), however, it produces the invisible regions in the TFOV. In this case, the invisible regions cause the performance of the seeker to deteriorate. For full scan-coverage, it is necessary to design the small IFOV without the invisible regions in the TFOV, as possible. In this paper, we propose the new method of designing the smaller IFOV than the conventional method and verify full coverage of the scanned region. By comparing the nose equivalent flux density (NEFD) of the proposed method with the that of the conventional one, we confirm that the former is better than the latter in terms of performance.

Conventional proportional navigation guidance law is not adequate for missiles with a strapdown seeker, because the strapdown seeker cannot measure line-of-sight rate directly. This paper suggests a guidance loop design method, in which the look angle, measured by the strapdown seeker directly, is controlled to deliver a missile to a target. Basically, the look angle control loop is regarded as an attitude control loop. By using the proposed method, it is possible to shape the midcourse trajectory by choosing the reference look angle properly. The look angle control loop can robustly maintain target lock-on against disturbances because the target is always captured in the field of view of the seeker. The performance of the proposed method is verified via 6-DOF simulations of a true short range tactical missile model.

Reticle systems, which are widely used in infrared (IR) missile seekers, are considered to be the classical approach for estimating the position of a target in the field of view (FOV). This paper presents an effective simulation tool that gives tracking results of the concentric annular ring reticle seeker. We construct the concentric annular ring reticle seeker on Matlab-Simulink for a dynamic simulation. Our simulation model provides tracking results in various cases, and is applicable to the study of the development of the advanced seekers. While false targets such as flares are presented in the FOV, simulation results show that the existing seeker cannot determine a precise target location. In order to decrease the susceptibility to countermeasures such as flares, we propose an efficient counter-countermeasure using the correlated relationship of modulated signals and the references. We have ascertained that the reticle seeker using our technique make more effective target tracking than previous seekers.

Recent development in seeker technology explores a new seeker design in which, with larger field-of-view (FOV), optical parts are strapped down to a body (hence, called as a body-fixed seeker or a strapdown seeker). This design has several advantages such as comparatively easier maintenance and calibration by removing complex mechanical moving parts, increasing reliability, and cost savings. On the other hand, the strapdown seeker involves difficulties in implementing guidance laws since it does not directly provide inertial LOS rates. Instead, information for generating guidance commands should be extracted by estimating missile/target relative motion utilizing target images on the image plane of a strapdown seeker. In this research, a new framework based on an unscented Kalman filter is developed for estimating missile/target relative motion on the simplified assumption of a point source target. Performance of a terminal guidance algorithm, in which guidance command is generated based on the estimated relative motion, is demonstrated by a missile/target engagement simulation.

This paper presents a dynamic simulation loop that gives tracking results of 2-color concentric annular ring (CAR) reticle seeker. Our simulation tool includes the target/flare model and a proportional navigation guidance (PNG) loop. The CAR reticle system performances and the flare effects are analyzed in various scenarios. When a flare is present in the field of view (FOV), the simulation results show that the reticle seeker cannot keep a precise target tracking. In this paper, we propose 2-color counter-countermeasure (CCM) using the least mean square (LMS) method to cope with a presence of IR flare. The proposed method makes a simultaneous process in two infrared (IR) wavelength bands: MWIR add SWIR. The simulation results have shown that our adaptive IRCCM algorithm can achieve an effective cancellation of the flare signal with a relatively high intensity.

In this paper, we have proposed a separable nose cap and its opening device to protect a seeker's window from aerodynamic heating and to decrease the drag force on missile body. The nose cap should be promptly deployed to secure the view field of seeker when it is needed. This cap consists of two nose cap structures and separation devices such as pyro puller and pusher. The performance of pyro puller was fully verified through analyses and several kinds of operating tests. We can obtain a sufficient confidence level of the pyro puller through many operating tests under various environments.

In this paper, an optimal guidance law with terminal angle constraint considering the seeker's lock-on condition, in which the target is located within the field-of-view (FOV) and detection range limits at the end of the midcourse phase, is proposed. The optimal solution is obtained by solving an optimal control problem minimizing the energy cost function weighted by a power of range-to-go subject to the terminal constraints, which can shape the guidance commands and the missile trajectories adjusting guidance gains of the weighting function. The proposed guidance law can be applied to both of the midcourse and terminal phases by setting the desired relative range and look angle to the final interception conditions. The performance of the proposed guidance law is analyzed through nonlinear simulations for various engagement conditions.

In this paper, based on the characteristics of proportional navigation, a composite guidance law is proposed for impact angle control of passive homing missiles maintaining the lock-on condition of the seeker. The proposed law is composed of two guidance commands: the first command is to keep the look angle constant after converging to the specific look angle of the seeker, and the second is to impact the target with terminal angle constraint and is implemented after satisfying the specific line of sight(LOS) angle. Because the proposed law considers the seeker's filed-of-view(FOV) and acceleration limits simultaneously and requires neither time-to-go estimation nor relative range information, it can be easily applied to passive homing missiles. The performance and characteristics of the proposed law are investigated through nonlinear simulations with various engagement conditions.
