The experiment was conducted to obtain basic information on occurrence ecology system of Aneilema japonica and to establish its effective control systems in dry seeded rice at National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station in 1995. Total amount of weed in dry seeded rice in the following year('95) as affected by control of barnyardgrass at 70 days after seeding(DAS) in previous year('94) was reduced 47.7% at 30 DAS and 7.8% at 60DAS and also exhibited different weed occurrence as compared with no control plot. Especially in control plot at 60 DAS, occurrence of Echinochloa crus-galli was reduced by 46.9%, But the growth of Aneilema japonica which is one of the problems in weed species was drastically increased by 231 % and Persicaria hydropiper by 11.8%, respectively. Suppressed tillering of rice plant as affected by occurring of A. japonica(300-750 plants/$m^2$) occurred from about 40 DAS and rice grain reduced 74-93% compared with hand weeding due to reduced panicle number. Soil applied Butachlor(EC) at 5 DAS, foliar applied Propanil -Butachlor(EC) at 13 DAS and Lgc 40863+Pendimethalin at 20 DAS were very effective for Aneilema japonica. As considering both weed suppression of Aneilema japonica and yield capacity, middle late foliar application of Lgc 40863+Pendimethalin and systematic application of Butachlor at 5 DAS followed by Propanil/Molinate at 25 DAS were the most effective control systems.

This study was conducted to evaluate the phytotoxicity of imazosulfuron+fentrazamide mixture in rice field. It is recommended that safe herbicide application was obtained at 3 cm of transplanting depth and in sandy loam or loam soil type. In the direct water seeding of rice, imazosulfuron+fentrazamide SC should be applied at least 10 days before sowing land ower than 25+100 g ai/ha. In case of imazosulfuron+fentrazamide SC application after sowing, If we use the herbicide 15 days after sowing, no herbicide symptoms will be detected even though the amounts of the herbicide increase. In the rice transplanting, it is recommended that imazosulfuron+fentrazamide GR is applied 5 days after transplanting. In case of sequential herbicide application, the imazosulfuron+fentrazamide SC application at 75+300 g ai/ha 15 or 20 days after transplanting after the application at 25+100 g ai/ha or 50+200 g ai/ha 3 days before sowing increases weed control efficacy and gives no phytotoxicity in the rice growth.
This study was established to control the overgrowth of cucumber and tomato plug seedlings by controlling of irradiation timings light intensities of red (R) light. Compared with the control, end-of-day (EOD) timing of R irradiation significantly reduced the seeding heights by 21.3% and 14.2% in cucumber and tomato, respectively. In addition, both plant seedlings treated with R light at EOD timing had the thickest stem diameter. Tomato seedlings treated with R light at EOD showed th highest chlorophyll content and the smallest leaf size. Dry weights of above ground plant tissue in both plant seedlings were significantly reduced by EOD R light treatment. And both plant seedlings treated with EOD treatment had the lowest T/R ratio, and the highest compactness rates. The increased intensities of R light resulted in the shorter plant heights in cucumber and tomato plant seedlings. It also reduced the length of hypocotyls and internodes and the size of leaves in the both seedlings. Elevated R light intensities tended to increase the stem diameter and chlorophyll contents. Dry weights of above ground plant tissue and roots in both plant seedlings were reduced by the elevated R irradiation. Cucumber seedlings treated with 2 and 8 $mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and tomato seedlings treated with 8 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ had significantly lower T/R ratio the other treatments tested.

Algal communities are important to maintain the aquatic ecosystems function. Algae have short life cycles, they respond quickly to environmental change and their diversity and density can indicate and the quality of their habitat. The bloom forms before the rice seedings have emerged, it may present a physical barrier that prevents the seedlings from penetrating the floodwater. Wind may also move the algal bloom, pushing the young plants beneath the surface. Another harmful action develops when the water dries up and the algae form a layer at the bottom of the field. The layer envelops the seedlings, which are not yet deeply rooted, and drag them to the surface when the water is let in again. Soil utilization pattern can be the mail facter affecting soil physico-chemical properties, especially in soil phosphorus (P). Solid content of the algae culture solution increased with the increase in the nitrogen rather the phosphors concentration. Phosphoric acid was treated with conventional treatments (100-0%, before transplanting time-tillering stage), 50-50%, 0-100%, and un-treated. The herbicide was treated on the 7 DAT (day after transplanting). Green algae samples were collected 20 DAT. Total phosphoric acid was the highest at 0.06 in 50-50% treatment in 20 DAT. The amount of green algae was about twice (9.8 mg/20ml) that of un-treated. Total number of green algae was 54 species(Green algae 35 species, Euglena 9 species, Stone wheel 10 species). Among the phosphoric acid treatment methods, the number of occurrences of green algae were the highest with 39 species in 0-100%, followed by 50-50%, 28 species, conventional treatments, 22 species, non-treatment, 18 species, respectively. Rice Yield was not significantly different by phosphoric treatment time, but slightly higher than un-treated. The maximal algal biomass was observed about 2weeks or 1 month after transplanting; the subsequent decrease of the biomass was related to the consumption by grazers and to a deficient light under the rice canopy. Maximal algal growth was observed just before tillering. To estimate the suitable method of phosphorus application in puddled-soil drill seeding of rice, available phosphorus appearance of algal water bloom, and rice yield were investigated in paddy soil of rice-barley double cropping system.
Latex Coated Urea(LCU) was compared with ordinary urea under different methods of application in terms of N use efficiency and yield of rice, 1995 and 1996. The study was carried out on Jeonbug silty clay loam, in Honam Agricultural Experiment Station. The fertilizer treatments involved (1) conventional application of urea (44kg N/ha at transplanting, 33kg N/ha at five leaves stage, 33kg N/ha. (4) 55kg N/ha at transplanting and 33kg N/ha as urea at panicle initiation stage, and (5) without N. It was found that by combining LCU(as basal application) and urea(as topdressing at panicle initiation stage), at the rate of 80% of conventional rate with ordinary urea is most effective for the saving of N and increasing the use efficiency of N by rice. It was, however, observed that the efficacy of LCU was affected by the temperature during the growth of rice.
Carrots (Daucus carota L.) are consumed as an important dietary source of provitamin A including $\beta$-carotene, $\alpha$-carotene and lutein. An HPLC method was applied to determine the content of the carotenoid composition in carrot cutivars cultivated in Korea. HPLC analyses were carried out with five carrot cultivars (Socheon-5-chon, Hongsim-5-chon, Myeongju-5-chon, Seonhongbom-5-chon and Betarich) sown at April, 2007 and six cultivars (Yeoreum-5-chon, Hanyeoreum-5-chon, Sinheukjeon-5-chon, Bibariheukjeon, Manina and Betarich) sown at August of the same year. In general, the former varieties are not used for the sowing at summer because of their bolting (growth of floral axis). The former and the latter carrots were harvested after 110 and 96 days from seeding, respectively, and the carotenoids were extracted with acetone after freeze-drying. The amount of $\alpha$-carotene ($117.7{\sim}205.3\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) was similar to that of $\beta$-carotene ($113.1{\sim}189.6\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) for the carrot cultivars sown at spring, while the content ($46.2{\sim}71.1\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) was about a half of $\beta$-carotene content ($92.5{\sim}140.2\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) for the latter cultivars. In addition, the average content of lutein ($25.2\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) in the former cultivars was eight times higher than that in the latter cultivars ($3.1\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$). Among the spring cultivation types, Socheon-5-chon and Myeongju-5-chon showed higher amount of $\alpha$-carotene and $\beta$-carotene, while the higher amount was determined in Yeoreum-5-chon and Sinheukjeon-5-chon among the autumn cultivation types. Validation of the HPLC-DAD method showed good linearity ($r^2$ > 0.997) of the three compounds analyzed in a wide concentration range ($0.025{\sim}20\;{\mu}g/ml$). The R.S.D. values for intra-day and inter-day precision were less than 19.2% and the mean recovery of each compound was 85.4~104.7%.

$GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$(Gd123) powders were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method using $Gd_2O_3$ (99.9% purity), $BaCO_3$ (99.75%) and CuO (99.9%) powders. The synthesized Gd123 powder and the Gd123 powder with $Gd_2O_3$ addition ($Gd_{1.5}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$(Gd1.5)) were used as raw powders for the fabrication of Gd123 bulk superconductors. The Gd123 and Gd1.5 bulk superconductors were fabricated by sintering or a top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) process. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_{c,onset}$) of the sintered Gd123 was 93 K and the transition width was as large as 20 K. The $T_{c,onset}$ of the TSMG processed Gd123 was 82 K and the transition width was also as large as 12 K. The critical current density ($J_c$) at 77 K and 0 T of the sintered Gd123 and TSMG processed Gd123 were as low as a few hundreds A/$cm^2$. The addition of 0.25 mole $Gd_2O_3$ and 1 wt.% $CeO_2$ to Gd123 enhanced the $T_c$, $J_c$ and magnetic flux density (H) of the TSMG processed Gd123 sample owing to the formation of the superconducting phase with high flux pinning capability. The $T_c$ of the TSMG processed Gd1.5 was 92 K and the transition width was 1 K. The $J_cs$ at 77 K (0 T and 2 T) were $3.2{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$ and $2.5{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$, respectively. The H at 77 K of the TSMG-processed Gd1.5 was 1.96 kG, which is 54% of the applied magnetic field (3.45 kG).
Interspecific competition between E. colona and rice was determined over four growth stages in replacement series. No competition between the two species as measured by plant height, leaf area and dry weight occurred by 30 days after seeding (DAS) at all the density combinations studied. At 45 DAS reductions in leaf area and dry weight of E. colons due to the competition occurred at the density combinations where number of competing E. colons plant was less than that of rice. However, there was a great increase in leaf area and dry weight of E. colons at the density combination of one E. colons competing with four rice plants at 60 DAS. As the number of E. colons plants increased, the leaf area and dry weight of E. colona decreased resulting from intraspecific competition between E. colons plants. Although rice absorbed more nitrogen than E. colons up to 30 DAS, the reverse was observed from 45 DAS. A relatively small amount of phosphorous was absorbed by both rice and E. colons, but the amount of phosphorous taken up by E. colons was greater than that taken up by rice. E. colons absorbed extremely high amount of potassium when compared to rice.

This study was conducted from 2013 to 2014 to explore the feasibility of the cultivation of warm-season grass as an annual Korean forage crop, while concurrently evaluating the characteristics and forage production of warm-season grass in Korea. The experimental design was a randomized block design (RBD) with three replications. Five bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] cultivars, two teffgrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) cultivars, and a Kleingrass [Panicum coloratum L.] cultivar were compared for forage production and quality in the middle region of Korea. After seeding, the numbers of days until seedling emergence for bermudagrass and kleingrass were observed at approximately day 11 and day 12, respectively. The heading dates of teffgrass and kleingrass were on July 12 and July 26, respectively. The dry matter (DM) yield of bermudagrass Tifton 85 was usually greater than the other entries. The crude protein content (CPC) and total digestibility nutrient (TDN) for the teffgrass cultivars were usually greater than the other entries at all study sites. The acid detergent fiber (ADF) and in vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD) were similar across all cultivars.
This study was conducted to establish the elaborate nitrogen fertilization method to enhance N use efficiency in direct-seeded rice on flooded paddy. The nitrogen uptake by rice plants was insignificant until 25 days after seeding, and increased gradually thereafter. During this early growth stage, rice plants absorbed only the $4\%$ of basal applied N, while the $45\%$ of N fertilizer remained in the paddy soil. The absorption of basal N by rice plants was almost completed at 46 days after application. Nitrogen top-dressed at 5-leaf stage was well matched to crop nutrient demand, so it could be absorbed so actively in 8days after application. As a result, we could cut down the amount of N fertilizer to $36\%$ of the basal N level without significant difference in yield. Plant recoveries of fertilizer $^{15}N$ applied with different application timings were $7.8\%$ for basal, $9.4\%$ for 5-leaf stage, $17.1\%$ for tillering stage, and $23.4\%$ for panicle initiation stage, respectively. When urea was applied with nitrogen fertilization practice based on basal incorporation (BN), plant recovery of $^{15}N$ at harvest was $31.0\%$, which was originated from $13.7\%$ for grain, and $21.3\%$ of the fertilizer $^{15}N$ remained in the soil, and the rest could be uncounted. Plant recovery of fertilizer $^{15}N$ applied with nitrogen fertilization practice based on topdressing at 5-leaf stage (TN), where N rate was reduced by $18\%$ compared with BN, was $35.1\%$ (grain $15.6\%$), and $19.9\%$ of the fertilizer $^{15}N$ remained in the soil, and the rest could be uncounted. TN showed a higher $^{15}N$ recovery than BN because it was to apply N fertilizer at a time to well meet the demand of rice plant direct-seeded on flooded paddy. We concluded that TN would be the nitrogen fertilization method to enhance N use efficiency in direct-seeded rice on flooded paddy.
