To identify the appropriate irrigation level for Pinus densiflora, a common reforestation species in Korea, we investigated their growth response characteristics according to different irrigation treatment levels for producing container seedlings with relatively high growth rate for higher survival rate when planted at the reforestation site. The container seedlings including control seedlings (no irrigation was applied) were grown in 104-cell trays were irrigated for 8 weeks from 15 weeks after seeding, at intervals of 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 15 days. Analysis of the height growth, root collar diameter growth, and dry matter production of the container seedlings according to irrigation showed that the highest growth reaction was observed for the irrigation interval of 1 day. A shorter irrigation cycle resulted in better growth of the container seedlings, but overall, longer total root length were observed with an irrigation cycle of 3 days compared with cycles of 1 or 2 days. Quality index (QI) was the highest for the irrigation interval of 1 day, and tended to decrease with increase in the irrigation interval. Thus, it was determined that irrigation at intervals of 1-2 days was appropriate for growing Pinus densiflora container seedlings.

The growth behavior of nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) film has been studied for three different substrates, i.e. bare Si wafer, 1 ${\mu}m$ thick W and Ti films deposited on Si wafer by DC sputter. The surface roughness values of the substrates measured by AFM were Si < W < Ti. After ultrasonic seeding treatment using nanometer sized diamond powder, surface roughness remained as Si < W < Ti. The contact angles of the substrates were Si ($56^{\circ}$) > W ($31^{\circ}$) > Ti ($0^{\circ}$). During deposition in the microwave plasma CVD system, NCD particles were formed and evolved to film. For the first 0.5h, the values of NCD particle density were measured as Si < W < Ti. Since the energy barrier for heterogeneous nucleation is proportional to the contact angle of the substrate, the initial nucleus or particle densities are believed to be Si < W < Ti. Meanwhile, the NCD growth rate up to 2 h was W > Si > Ti. In the case of W substrate, NCD particles were coalesced and evolved to the film in the short time of 0.5 h, which could be attributed to the fact that the diffusion of carbon species on W substrate was fast. The slower diffusion of carbon on Si substrate is believed to be the reason for slower film growth than on W substrate. The surface of Ti substrate was observed as a vertically aligned needle shape. The NCD particle formed on the top of a Ti needle should be coalesced with the particle on the nearby needle by carbon diffusion. In this case, the diffusion length is longer than that of Si or W substrate which shows a relatively flat surface. This results in a slow growth rate of NCD on Ti substrate. As deposition time is prolonged, NCD particles grow with carbon species attached from the plasma and coalesce with nearby particles, leaving many voids in NCD/Ti interface. The low adhesion of NCD films on Ti substrate is related to the void structure of NCD/Ti interface.
Research was initiated to investigate early establishment characteristics and germination pattern of Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.). Fifteen cultivars were evaluated under alternative conditions (8 hours light at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16 hours dark at $15^{\circ}C$). Significant differences were observed in germination characteristics and germination pattern among KB cultivars. A final germination percentage differed in cultivars, being 75.25 to 89.50%. The first germination was initiated between 6 and 9 DAS (days after seeding). As for the first germination percentage, 'Brilliant' and 'Midnight II' produced 14.50% and 23.00%, respectively, while the others were most below 5%. Days to 75% germination were between 15.08 and 28.80 DAS. 'Excursion', 'Midnight II', 'Odyssey', 'Midnight' and 'Courtyard' were fastest. The slowest cultivar was 'Voyager II', being over 28 DAS, which were 13 to 14 days slower than the fastest ones. Considering the first germination percentage, days to the first germination, days to 75% germination, and germination pattern, 'Midnight II', 'Excursion' and 'Midnight' were regarded as excellent cultivars under alternative conditions. From this study, information on differences in germination characteristics and patterns would be practically useful for a golf course construction when established with KB.
A seed pelleting technique was developed for easy handling of small tobacco seeds (variety, NC82) and for direct seeding in temperary planting bed or in field. The mixture of pelleting material, binder and seeds were moulded in cylindrical holes sized 2 mm diameter and 2 mm height in a plastic plate. Bentonite and cellulose powder were good materials to make pellets with CMC as binder, and bentonite formed the hardest pelleted seeds among the materials. The number of the pelleted seeds made with the same weight of the materials was different with materials used and the number of seeds contained in a pelleted seed could be controlled by mixture ratio of materials and seeds. The seedless pellets ranged 6.9 to 16.0% at the ratio of pelleting material and seed for 2~3 seeds in a pellet. The moisture absorption rate at 100% RH and $25^{\circ}C$ was greater in the order of clay < bentonite < cellulose. Germination rates of pelleted seeds with bentonite and cellulose were similar to that of usual seed, but it was significantly lower with clay pelleted seeds.
This study was conducted to investigate the ecology of weed occurrence and to establish an economical paddy field weed control system for direct-seeded rice on water. The main problem weed among annual and perennial weeds was Eleocharis kuroguwai. The control effect of E. kuroguwai was low by the application of azimsulfuron + carfentrazone-ethyl + pyriminobac-methyl at the early stages of rice in directly seeded paddy fields, but most annual weeds including Echinochloa crus-galli were controlled. Also, the additional application of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl + thiobencarb GR at 20 days after first treatment or of bentazone SL at 43 days after the first treatment effectively controlled E. kuroguwai. Tuber formation of E. kuroguwai was inhibited by the additional application of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl + thiobencarb by 84%, but the dormancy rate of old tubers of E. kuroguwai under the soil was higher than that of E. kuroguwai tubers following single application of azimsulfuron + carfentrazone-ethyl + pyriminobac-methyl at the early stages of rice. Tuber formation was inhibited by the additional application of bentazone by approximately 87%, and the old tuber dormancy rate was low in the bentazone treatment. High amounts of old dormant tubers of E. kuroguwai were found in the weedy plots.
To evaluate performance of the experimental pick-up type pulse crop harvester for harvesting sprout bean, its pick-up and discharging grain loss ratios, grain quality such as whole grain ratio, damaged grain ratio, unthreshed grain, and foreign material ratio in grain tank, germination rate of threshed grain, and theoretical field capacity of the harvester were analyzed according to engine speeds of 2000, 2400 and 2800 rpm and harvesting speeds of 0.6, 1.0 and 1.4 m/s. It is considered that the harvester showed optimum performance at the engine speed of 2800 rpm and the harvesting speed of 1.0 m/s, and then average pick-up grain loss ratio of 2.7%, discharging grain loss ratio of 0.5%, whole grain ratio of 99.3%, damaged grain ratio of 0.2%, unthreshed grain ratio of 0.0%, foreign material ratio of 0.2%, and germination rate at 8 days after seeding of 72.8% were shown. It is considered that the harvester has lower grain loss and higher grain quality than the imported bean combines. And also as it could harvest 3 rows of cut and dried sprout bean crop width of which was about 2 m, its effective field capacity was estimated for about 50 a/h.

The metalaxyl seed-soaking treatment markedly increased the root-mat formation of the young rice seedling(8- to l0-day-old) for machine transplanting. This experiment was conducted to find out a possible rooting mechanism of the young rice seedling in relation to the exogenous metalaxyl seed-soaking treatment. The rice seeds of Hwaseongbyeo variety were soaked in the solution of metalaxyl for 24 hours at room temperature. Metalaxyl(25% wettable powder), a fungicide, was used at the concentration of 200ppm as a promoting substance on the root-mat formation of the young rice seedling. Seeding rate of the young rice seedling was 220g per seed tray(30${\times}$60${\times}$depth 3cm). Metalaxyl seed treatment was highly effective in root initiation and elongation of the young rice seedling in terms of root activity, the number and length of root, and amino acid content of roots. The exogenous metalaxyl application would also increase the chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate in the young rice seedling. Those factors resulted in vigorous root-mat formation of the young rice seedling. In particular, alanine is a lead compound of metalaxyl which biochemically plays an important role in energy intermediate of the rice plant. Alanine conjugation with a glucose (N-${\beta}$-glucoside) is probably the mechanism in enhancement of initiation and elongation of rice roots of young rice seedling.

'Jogreen' (Secale cereal L.) was developed for rye cultivars not fast heading but winter hardiness with high yields, which was open-pollinated by ten rye cultivars including 'Chochun' in 1995. Its average heading date was April 15, which was five days earlier on average compared with 'Gogu'. At harvest, the plant height of 'Jogreen' was 117 cm which was taller than 'Gogu' as much as 6 cm. The number of stems was 983 per m2, which was higher than that of Gogu (979). 'Jogreen' did not show both winter kill and powdery mildew, but showed lodging as 3 which is similar to 'Gogu'. The biomass in the dry weight base was 8.1 MT ha-1, and showing was 4% higher than 'Gogu'. The crude protein content of 'Jogreen' was 11.9%, 0.8% lower than that of 'Gogu', and the acid detergent fiber (ADF) and the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents were 36.9% and 64.5%, respectively, higher than that of 'Gogu'. The total digestible nutrients (TDN) content also was low, but the TDN content was 5.09 ton ha-1, which was higher than that of 'Gogu'. The seed productivity of 'Jogreen' was approximately 3.1 ton ha-1, which was similar to the check. 'Jogreen' was found to be resistant to winter kill and can be adapted to after-paddy-rice cultivation in all Korean provinces. 'Jogreen' is likely to lodge, therefore, farmers should follow the recommended seeding rate and fertilization rate.

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of chilling temperature and duration at different seeding stages on yield, fruit characteristics and growth of cucumber in a greenhouse. When 20-day-old cucumber were exposed to 0 and 3℃ for 10 hours, 25 and 30% reduction in the main stem elongation rate and 34 and 37% reduction in total leaf area per plant were observed. The reduction in stem elongation and total leaf area was apparently associated with the increases in chilling duration. Exposure of seedlings to 6℃ failed to causes any significant differences in growth as compared to the unchilled plants. Repeated exposure of seedlings to 3℃ chilling for 10 hours per day increased the chilling injury significantly. The seedlings exposed to low temperature for 3 consecutive days exhibited severe injury as compared to the seedlings exposed to chilling treatment only once or twice. Fruit elongation rate was inhibited by approximately 10%, such as 0.59~2.26cm/day, with chilling of 15 hours at 0℃ as compare to 0.61~2.60cm/day in the non-chilled plants. Chilling treatment at 0~3℃ for 10 hours reduced the percentage of marketable fruits by 25~26%. while it increased the percentage of severely bent fruits significantly. Total fruits yield was reduced by 15~25% in cucumber plants when the chilling treatment was given to 20-day-old seedlings and by 22~37% in 30-day-old seedlings. This shows that, Larger seedlings were more sensitive to chilling. Total yield was also influenced by the duration of chilling. Definitely, at 0℃, 5-hour chilling treatment caused 18% of reduction, 10-hour caused 30%, and 15-hour caused 36%, respectively.
A field experiment was conducted to determine an optimum control time of water foxtail(Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis Ohwi), a most troublesome weed, in no-tillage dry seeded rice. Paraquat, a non-selective herbicide, was applied at 1.5 days interval from March 15 to May 15 at a concentration of 3,000ml per hectar and its control efficacy to A. aequalis was recorded before and after seed sowing. In addition. other characters such as decayed injury of A. aequalis to rice seedling, and its influence of seedling stand were also investigated in relation to rice grain yield. Dry weight of A. aequalis was rapidly increased with delay in control time from 42g/$m^2$at March 15 to 237g/$m^2$ at May 15. The amount of its regrowth at seeding time was highest with 68.3g, when paraquat was applied at March 15, then decreased thereafter and it was less than 6.2g when paraquat was applied after April 15 which indicates above 98% control rate. The control rate of A. aequalis, at 30 days after paraquat application way likewise similar to that the seeding time. Rice seedling stands in the plot treated with paraquat before April 15 were not affected by decayed injury of A. aequalis while decayed injury of 3 to 4 degree for those after April 30 application was noted. Dwarf virus disease on rice seedling due to occurrence of A. aequalis was not observed when A. aequalis was controled from March 30 to May 15 while it was occurred in the plot of March 15 application and the untreated control. The control plot of A. aequalis at April 15 had the highest grain yield with 4.79ton/10a. Based on control rate of A. aequalis, seedling stands of rice, virus disease, and rice grain yield, the most suitable control time of A. aequalis in no-tillage dry seeded rice is considered to be about April 15.
