  • To examine ideal leaf types with higher $\textrm{CO}_2$ assimilates and different seed sizes, 12 soybean varieties were planted on the pot in a plastic house covered with glass. Leaf function based on stomatal conductance and $\textrm{CO}_2$ assimilation in soybean is different in seed size and leaflet shape. Mean $\textrm{CO}_2$ assimilation of a single leaf was 19.66 $\mu\textrm{molm}^{-2}\textrm{s}^{-1}$ and showed higher in small seed cultivars with narrow leaflet than that of small seeds with wide leaflet (18.29 $\mu\textrm{molm}^{-2}\textrm{s}^{-1}$), but within large seed groups, it was higher in wide leaflets (19.17 $\mu\textrm{molm}^{-2}\textrm{s}^{-1}$) than narrow leaflet cultivars (17.45 $\mu\textrm{molm}^{-2}\textrm{s}^{-1}$). In small seed and narrow leaflet cultivars, stomatal conductance ranged from 0.14 to 0.15 $\mu\textrm{molm}^{-2}\textrm{s}^{-1}$, while $\textrm{CO}_2$ assimilation ranged from 19 to 20 $\mu\textrm{molm}^{-2}\textrm{s}^{-1}$. The Photosynthetic rate was closely related to stomatal conductance, transpiration and water use efficiency.

  • Purpose: This research was conducted to determine the design factors of a seed-metering device for the development of a seeder. The device allows the seeder to sow precisely one to three seeds of foxtail millet and sorghum. To obtain fundamental information regarding the design of the seed-metering device, examination of the physical properties of foxtail millet and sorghum was conducted. Methods: Based on the results of an adaptability test using an existing seeder with foxtail millet and sorghum, an experimental roller-type seed-metering device was made. The seeding factors considered during the experiment were the width, length, and depth, as well as the shape of the groove in the seed-metering roller. By adapting an analysis of variance, the experimental results of the seeding factors were analyzed. Results: The measured results of the respective lengths and widths of the seeds were 2.11 and 1.64 mm for foxtail millet, and 3.68 and 3.32 mm for sorghum, respectively. The weight of 1,000 seeds was 2.43 g for foxtail millet and 17.5 g for sorghum. The seeds were of an elliptical shape, considering the length and width. A sieve analysis showed that the size distribution of foxtail millet was quite regular whereas that of sorghum was irregular. Conclusions: The seeding results showed that the rates of incorrect planting were low when the groove of the roller-type metering device is an elliptical type. To sow one to three seeds, the groove of roller-type metering devices $2.0mm{\times}4.0mm{\times}1.5mm$ ($width{\times}length{\times}depth$) for foxtail millet, and $4.0mm{\times}8.0mm{\times}3.0mm$ and $4.5mm{\times}8.0mm{\times}3.0mm$ ($width{\times}length{\times}depth$) for Sorghum.

  • A new black seed coat soybean cultivar, 'Heugseong' was developed at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 2008. The goal to breed the black seed coat soybean is to develop the cultivar with large seed size, high yield, lodging tolerance, and resistance to disease such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV), and bacterial pustule. 'Heugseong' was selected from the cross between 'Gnome85', showing yellow seed coat, lodging tolerance, and high yield, and 'Cheongja', showing green cotyledon, and black seed coat. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for this cultivar were carried out from 2004 to 2008. It has determinate growth habit, purple flower, brown pubescence, brown pod color, black seed coat, yellow cotyledon, elongated seed shape, oval leaf shape and large seed size (29.2 grams per 100 seeds). It was 4 days later in maturity than the check cultivar 'Ilpumgeomjeongkong'. 'Heugseong' was better than the check cultivar in the seed quality of isoflavone contents(1,913 ${\mu}g/g$). It has good adaptability for cooking with rice in ratio of water absorption and seed hardness, for physics of black tofu, and for fermented black soybean paste. The average yield of 'Heugseong' was 2.37 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials carried out in six locations of Korea from 2006 to 2008.

  • Background: Sowing seeds of Adenophora triphylla is known to be difficult owing to their small size and irregular seed shape. Therefore, this study was conducted to develop a seed pelleting technique to save labor during sowing. Methods and Results: To identify the optimal germination temperature for A. triphylla seeds, the temperature range was set from 17℃ to 32℃. Germination surveys were conducted in plastic greenhouse conditions in March, April, and May to determine the appropriate sowing time. The optimal germination temperature for A. triphylla seeds was 29℃ and May was the optimal sowing time in plastic greenhouse conditions. Covering materials for seed pelleting used talc (T), kaolin (K), calcium carbonate (C), and vermiculite (V). The pellet binder used agar (A), pectin, xanthan gum, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and sodium alginate (S). The best suited treatment mixture were the best suited in kaolin / calcium carbonate / vermiculite (KCV), talc / calcium carbonate / vermiculite (TCV) mixture treatment for covering material, and sodium alginate (S), agar (A) as pellet binder, respectively. The germination rate was the best in TCV mixed with S. Conclusion: The mixture of TCV (2 : 1 : 3) + 1.5% S (TCVS), was found to be the best pelleting materials for A. triphylla seeds, and seed pelleting can be labor-saving during sowing.

  • Pod shape of twenty soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) genotypes was evaluated quantitatively by image analysis using elliptic Fourier descriptors and their principal components. The closed contour of each pod projection was extracted, and 80 elliptic Fourier coefficients were calculated for each contour. The Fourier coefficients were standardized so that they were invariant of size, rotation, shift, and chain code starting point. Then, the principal components on the standardized Fourier coefficients were evaluated. The cumulative contribution at the fifth principal component was higher than $95\%$, indicating that the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth principal components represented the aspect ratio of the pod, the location of the pod centroid, the sharpness of the two pod tips and the roundness of the base in the pod contour, respectively. Analysis of variance revealed significant genotypic differences in these principal components and seed number per pod. As the principal components for pod shape varied continuously, pod shape might be controlled by polygenes. It was concluded that principal component scores based on elliptic Fourier descriptors yield seemed to be useful in quantitative parameters not only for evaluating soybean pod shape in a soybean breeding program but also for describing pod shape for evaluating soybean germplasm.

  • Varietal difference in seed shape and size, water absorption rate, and soybean sprouts was compared. In general, soybean seeds of yellow seed-coat and spherical shape with 100 seeds of 9.0$\pm$2g were evaluated as the best ones; Pungsannamulkong out of tested varieties was considered to be the best one in these respect. Varietal difference in water absorption yale depending on the soaking duration and temperature was recognized; Jungeri and Jillin 3 showed higher water absorption rate at higher temperature but it was completely vice versa for Pungsannamulkong. It took about 15 hours(soaking at 2$0^{\circ}C$) for seed shape of size to grow to 10mm in length. Maximum enlargement in thickness of soybean seeds was made right after the completion of repeated soaking-drying treatment but three hours and nine hours soaking were needed for one time-soaking and non-soaking treatment, respectively. Varietal difference in germination rate was recognized between one hour's soaking at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and two hour's soaking at 15$^{\circ}C$ The growth rate for Jillin 3 was excellent at all soaking methods and temperatures while three hours of soaking was the best for Jungeril and Pungsannamulkong, regardless of soaking temperatures. The growth of hypocotyl length showed somewhat faster in repeated soaking-drying than one time-soaking and non-soaking while the increase of hypocotyl thicknes was better in one-time soaking than repeated soaking-drying.

  • This study was carried out to improve utility value as soybean genetic resources and to obtain basic information for color-soybean breeding. The 146 local color soybean lines collected in Kyongbuk province were investigated major agronomic characteristics. Seed coat-color showed seven different types which were black, white mottled on black, white mottled on brown, black saddle on green, green, raddish brown and brown. Major color types were black and green colors. The 90 percent of collected lines were purple in flower color. The 86 lines were green in color of cotyledonary part and 64 lines yellow. Great variations were observed in days to flowering and days from flowering to maturity, 51 to 81 days and 75 to 103 days, respectively. But days to maturity was 150 to 159 days and had smaller variation than days to flowering and days from flowering to maturity in all lines except those with white mottled on black (123 days). The 100 seed weight ranged below 10g to over 36g. Black seed color with green embryo seed was heavier seed weight than black seed color with yellow embryo seed. Seed shape of all collected lines was ellipsodial and average ratio of length: width: thickness of seed was 1:0.87:0.69. Positive correlation coeffieients were obtained among seed length, width, thickness and 100 seed weight.

  • A new silicate coating technology was developed which reduces the impact of dust and loosening during seeding compared to existing silicate-coatings (Seed/Si/Zeolite), and therefore can lower the production costs of rice cultivation. In this method, 100 g of rice seed is coated with 18 mL of liquid silicic acid and then dressed with a mixture containing 80 g of dolomite and 5 g of iron. To determine the most effective method of application and ensure that seedlings developed healthily, a series of experiments were carried out. Infected seeds scattered in seedling boxes and pots (soil and hydroponic) were coated dry, without disinfection. In comparison to the seed which were not treated with the silicate-coating, the new seed (A) were 1.84 times heavier in weight, and were also improved in terms of coating strength and coating color. Compared to the seedlings grown from the non-coated seed, those grown from the new silicate-coated seed were of significantly higher quality (weight/length) and had erect, dark greenish leaves, which are ideal plant characteristics. This was most likely due to increased silicate uptake. The symptoms of bakanae disease in the non-coated seed peaked after 38 days to 54.2%, whereas the control value was 68.8% in the new silicate-coated seed (A). In the infected seedlings grown from the new silicate-coated rice seed, subnormal macro-conidia, namely, a sickle shape spore without a septum; a straight oblong shape spore without a septum and with a thick cell wall; and inter-septal necrosis of a normal spore were detected. It is believed that the strong alkalinity of silicic acid have acted as unfavorable conditions for pathogenicity. In seedlings grown from the new silicate coated rice seed under hydroponic conditions without nutrients, normal root activity and growth was maintained without leaf senescence. Therefore, it was possible to reduce the rate of fertilization. In the future, a new silicate-coated rice seed was required for the study of minimal nutrition for anti-aging of seedlings.
