  • An automatic drum seeder was developed to improve the seeding operation. It consisted of a conveyor to transfer seedling trays, a seed-hopper to supply seeds, a drum to drop seeds on the tray, and an air blower to remove extra seeds. A photo sensor was used to detect the transfer of seedling trays, and its signal was fed into microcomputer which operated a stepping motor driving the drum. The seeds were adhered to the surface of drum by vacuum pressure, and were dropped into tray cells by compressed air. An air connection unit was devised to alternate between vacuum pressure and compressed air. A control program for the system, written in C language, could operate the drum at the given number of revolutions and revolutions per minute. The results showed that the air connection unit could operate well and the seeds were dropped satisfactorily into tray cells. In case of cabbage and perilla seeds, which are regular and spherical shape, the missing rate was low and the single seeding rate was more than 97%. Low missing rate and high multiple seeding rate were observed in lettuce seeds which have narrow ends with tight weight. The missing rate of pepper seed was very high because of heavy weight and irregular shape. To improve the performance of the seeder, adjustment of vacuum pressure based upon shape and weight of the seeds, careful selection of the material of drum, maintenance of consistent air blower pressure, and replacement of stepping motor to DC motor are recommended.

  • Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.; IRG) sowing season is delayed due to the autumn rainy season. Therefore, to address this problem, transplanting date and plant density were investigated. Transplant times investigated were October 20th, October 30th, and November 10th and planting densities were 50, 70, and 80 hills per 3.3 m2. The plant height, leaf area index, and plant coverage rate were high in the following order: October 20th, October 30th, and November 10th. There was no significant difference among planting densities. In addition, the number of tillers and dry weight before and after wintering were high on October 20th. In terms of yield components, the number of tillers, dry weight, and seed yield per unit area were higher with the transplanting date of October 20th than with transplanting on November 10th. There was no difference in seed yield between the planting densities of 80 and 70 hills per 3.3 m2. However, seed yield was low at 50 hills per 3.3 m2. In conclusion, the transplanting time for stable seed production is late October, and optimal plant density is 70 and 80 hills per 3.3 m2. A stable interplanting number before wintering will contribute to the seed yield.

  • Sowing with an automatic seed metering device is increasing in popularity. Since 100% planting is not likely, a major problem is to find any place which contains no seeds between row spacings in the agricultural field. Automatic sowing technology, including the implementation of a microcomputer, appears to be an attractive alternative to the use of manual labor for accomplishing this task. Thus, the multi-purpose seeder attached to a cultivator was designed and constructed with an automatic seed metering device. This seeder proved to be a reliable system for sowing seeds in the agricultural field. Multi-purpose seeder for cultivator consists of an automatic seed metering device, a trench device, a covering device, and a press wheel

  • An experiment was set to assess the effect of mixed plantings on initial growth and biomass yield of two common plantation tree species of Bangladesh namely Acacia auriculiformis (A) and Gmelina arborea (G). Study was carried out in the nursery bed of the Seed Research Laboratory and Nursery of Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chittagong University (IFESCU), Bangladesh during February to November, 2015. The treatments consisted of two pure planting plots (100% A and 100% G) and five mixed planting plots (50%A: 50%G, 35%A: 65%G, 25%A: 75%G, 65%A: 35%G and 75%A: 25%G) of these two species. In nursery, seedlings were raised in a randomized blocks with four replicates of seven treatment plots. Periodic increments on height (cm), collar diameter (cm) and leaf/phyllode number of the seedlings was taken in every month and continued up to 10 months. The growth and biomass yield of seedlings were measured 10 months after the first seed was emerged. The effects of mixed plantation on growth and biomass were compared to that of seedlings grown in pure plantation. At the age of 10 months it was found that G. arborea seedlings were significantly tallest (240.13 cm) when planted with A. auriculiformis in a proportion of 25%A: 75%G, whereas A. auriculiformis were tallest in the pure 100% A plot, with an average mean height of 135.36 cm. Maximum collar diameter (1.38 cm) was recorded for G. arborea in the mixed plots 75%A: 25%G. Fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots of the seedlings were found significantly (p<0.05) highest in 50%A: 50%G plot for G. arborea. G. arborea also showed highest quality index when mixed with A. auriculiformis in a proportion of 50:50, with an average value of 8.96. The results revealed a positive correlation between seedling growth and various planting patterns.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate effects of planting densities ($60{\times}10cm$, $60{\times}15cm$, $60{\times}20cm$) and PE mulching (polyethylene film mulching, non-mulching) on growth and yield of proso millet in drained paddy field for 2 years. In PE plots, culm length, culm diameter and fresh weight were higher than non-mulching plot. Additionally, spike length and seed weight per hill were also higher in PE plot but thousand seed weight was weightier in non-mulching plot. The yield of proso millet were increased with 10.0% and 15.5% at PE plot in 1st and 2nd, respectively. Culm diameter was thickest at $60{\times}20cm$ plot with 8.43 mm in 2nd however, culm length was longest at $60{\times}10cm$ plot with 130, 142 cm in 1st and 2nd, respectively. Plant height was higher by the increase of planting density. As plant density decreased, that spike length and seed weight per hill were increased. Yield of planting density were highest at $60{\times}15cm$ plot $265kg{\cdot}h10a^{-1}$, $253kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ yearly, respectively that it were in order of $60{\times}15cm$ plot > $60{\times}10cm$ plot > $60{\times}20cm$ plot.

  • This study was carried out to suggest an effective method for the rehabilitation of Close-to-Nature River and artificial wetland. The results on the revegetation methods by seeding and sodding of Phragmites japonica, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Themeda triandra, and Pennisetum alopecuroides were summarized as follows. Seed germination of Phragmites japonica was 76.3% at $30^{\circ}C$, that of Miscanthus sacchariflorus was 68.7% at $20^{\circ}C$, that of Themeda triandra germinated 52.3% at $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ constant temperature and that of Pennisetum alopecuroides germinated 86.7% at $30^{\circ}C/20^{\circ}C$ alternating temperature. Seed germination of Pennisetum alopecuroides exceeded 80% at $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ constant temperature and $25^{\circ}C/15^{\circ}C$ alternating temperature. At 60 days after seeding, the ground coverage of Phragmites japonica, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Themeda triandra, and Pennisetum alopecuroides reached 81%, 81 %, 74%, and 86% respectively in the soil media of vermiculite and peatmoss(1 : 1 by volume). In the results of sod experiment, Phragmites japonica, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Themeda triandra, and Pennisetum alopecuroides were formed sod completely in soil composition type of vermiculite and peatmoss(1 : 1, v/v). Thus this media seems to be best sad production media for rehabilitation works of Close-to-Nature River and man-made wetlands. Phragmites japonica and Miscanthus sacchariflorus were not significantly different in shoot height and the number of tillers by different planting distance for the first one year of experiment. Pennisetum alopecuroides shows high possibility to be used for Close-to-Nature River rehabilitation works by seeding.

  • Normal seed tubers and plug seedlings raised from stem cutting and mini-tubers ($10\pm3$ g) were planted or transplanted on August 20,2001 in bare soil or under transparent and black polyethylene film mulches to evaluate the effects of mulch material and seedling type on the growth and tuber yield of fall-grown potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima) in Jeju region. Total tuber number per plant was 4.6 regardless of mulch treatment, and direct planting seed potatoes resulted in the greatest tubers (5.14)/plant and followed by transplanting seedlings raised from cutting and mini-tubers (4.15 and 5.15 tubers/plant). Transparent and black polyethylene film mulches increased total tuber yield by 16 and 8%, respectively, and average tuber weight by 14 and 12%, respectively, compared with no mulch (21.16 t/ha and 72.2 g/tuber). Transplanting plug seedlings raised from cutting resulted in the greatest tuber yield, followed by transplanting plug seedlings raised from mini-tubers and direct planting seed potatoes.
