Seed 첨가에 의한 Sr-Ferrite의 미세구조 제어 (Microstructure Control of Sr-Ferrite by Seed Addition)

  • In Sr-ferrite system, it has been attempted to inhibit the abnormal grian growth using Sr-ferrite powders synthesized by molten salt method as the matrix and the seeds, respectively. At each sintering temperature, the addition of seed more than 15% suppressed the abnormal grain growth, and the uniform microstructure resulted. Particularly, at 12$25^{\circ}C$, it was observed that the maximum number of the abnormal grain growth nuclei was achieved since the abnormal grain growth was suppressed even by the addition of 10% seed.

종자 입정을 이용한 저전압용 ZnO 바리스터의 제조 (Fabrication of Low Voltage ZnO Varistor by Seed Grain Method)

  • Low-voltage ZnO-based varistors were made by seed grain method at various sintering conditions. Their microstructure and electrical properties were investigated and comlpared with those of the ZnO varistors made by a conventional method at the same sintering condition. During the sintering process, the added seed ZnO grain rapidly grew to be a gaint grain(above 500$\mu\textrm{m}$) provinding easy current path. Therefore the breakdown voltage was lowered as much as the order of 1/10-1/5 in comparison to that of the varistor made by a conventional method. But the grain size of the giant ZnO was little influenced by sintering condition, so the breakdown voltate was also little influenced. The weight loss was decreased by the addition of the seed grain, because the giant grain decreased the evaporation area. Therefore the nonobmic property of the specimen made by seed grain method was little influencedby sintering condition. In this research the low-voltage varistor made by seed grain method showed the least leakage current when sintered at 1150$^{\circ}C$ for zero hour.

  • Abnomal grain growth behavior of BaTiO3 ceramics was investigated with addition of seed grains. It was foudn that the nucleation rate of abnormal grain was constant and growth of abnormal grain was linearly increased with sitnering time, regardless of amount of seed grains. These facts were also confirmed by fitting of the volume fraction of abnormal grain vs. sintering time using Avrami type equation (n=4). It was suggested that seed grains did not change the nucleation rate or growth mechanism of abnormal grain but increase the number of abnormal grains at initial stage of sintering and then it led to fine microstructure of BaTiO3 ceramics.

  • 1차와 2차 Seed grain을 제조하였다. 보다 큰 grain size를 갖는 1차 seed의 제조 조건은 2.0mol.%의 $BaCO_3$ 첨가와 10시간의 소경이었다. 가장 큰 2차 seed를 얻을 수 있는 1차 seed의 첨가량이 3wt.%로 나타나서, 전통적 방식으로 제조된 바 있는 저전압용 바리스터계에 이를 첨가하여 저전압 ZnO 바리스터를 제조하였다. 이와 같은 조건하에서 제조된 바리스터는 대개 10V/mm의 항복전압과 15~22의 비선형지수를 나타냈다.

  • We investgated I-V cahracteristics and relationship between microstructures and electrical properties in the specimens fabricated by seed grain method for low voltage Zn O varistor. Breaksown voltage was mainly dependent on seed grain size, and could be cntrolled to 10V/mm -15V/mm by sintering temperature and time. In non-seed grain method breakdown voltage generally agreed with final grain size, but did not always agree with it by the change of barrier phase distribution in case of the method using seed grains.

Effects of seed orientation on the growth behavior of single grain REBCO bulk superconductors

  • This study presents a simple method to control the seed orientation which leads to the various growth characteristics of a single grain REBCO (RE: rare-earth elements) bulk superconductors. Seed orientation was varied systematically from c-axis to a-axis with every 30 degree rotation around b-axis. Orientations of a REBCO single grain was successfully controlled by placing the seed with various angles on the prismatic indent prepared on the surface of REBCO powder compacts. Growth pattern was changed from cubic to rectangular when the seed orientation normal to compact surface was varied from c-axis to a-axis. Macroscopic shape change has been explained by the variation of the wetting angle of un-reacted melt depending on the interface energy between $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y123) grain and melt. Higher magnetic levitation force was obtained for the specimen prepared using tilted seed with an angle of 30 degree rotation around b-axis.

Fabrication of a large grain YBCO bulk superconductor by homo-seeding melt growth method

  • To fabricate large grain YBCO bulk superconductors by melt process, Sm123 single crystal with a high melting point are mostly used as seeds. However, it also uses Y123 film deposited on MgO single crystal substrate. This study investigated the growth behavior of the Y123 grain during a melt process when single grain YBCO bulk was used as a seed. Single grain Y123 bulk was grown when the seed size was small. When the seed size was relatively large, multiple grains were grown but the grains were still large. Y123 seed crystal was completely decomposed during high temperature anneal at 1040℃ and new Y123 crystals were nucleated during a slow cooling stage below a peritectic temperature. Thereafter, newly formed Y123 crystals from the seed area are thought to grow into the Y1.8 powder compact. The crystallographic orientations of newly nucleated Y123 grains are independent of the crystallographic orientation of Y123 seed. It is thought that the crystallographic orientation of newly nucleated Y123 crystal can be controlled by using Y211-free Y123 single crystal as a seed of homo-seeding melt growth.

  • Abnormal grain growth behavior of BaTiO3 ceramics with controlling of particle size distribution of calcined powder was investigated. The particle size distribution was controlled by changing the calcining temperature or by using of classification and regrinding process. With broadening of the normallized size distribution in calcined powder, it showeda normal grain growth behavior in sintered body due to an increase of volume fraction of seed grain in the calcined powder. It was supposed that the seed grains could easily contact each other for the rapid grain growth during sintering process and resulted in fast switching-over from abnormal to normal grain growth stage.

종결정법을 이용한 저전압 ZnO 배리스터의 제조 및 전기적 특성 (Preparation of Low Voltage ZnO Varistor Using Seed Grain Method and Its Electrical Properties)

  • ZnO low voltage varistor was obtained by varying a) the amount of seed grains, b) the size of seed grains, and c) sintering temperature. Also, the optimum condition for fabricating the ZnO seed grains was studied. Large ZnO seed grains were obtained by washing a ZnO sintered body containing 1m/of BaCO3 in boiling water. When the seed grains were added, abnormal grain growth occurred, and the varistor voltage sharply decreased. However, when more than 5w/o of seed grain content was added, the varistor voltage gradually increased. When 10w/o seed grains of 75~106${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were added and sintered for 2 hours at 1200 to 125$0^{\circ}C$, low voltage varistor properties with V1mA/mm of 19V/mm and nonlinear exponent ($\alpha$) of 12 occurred.

Effects of seed geometry on the crystal growth and the magnetic properties of single grain REBCO bulk superconductors

  • This study presents that the orientation and the geometry of seed affect on the growth behavior of melt processed single grain REBCO bulk superconductor and its magnetic properties. The effects of seed geometry have been investigated for thin $30mm{\times}30mm$ rectangular powder compacts. Single grain REBCO bulk superconductors have been grown successfully by a top seed melt growth method for 8-mm thick vertical thin REBCO slab. Asymmetric structures have been developed at the front surface and at the rear surface of the specimen. Higher magnetic properties have been obtained for the specimen that c-axis is normal to the specimen surface. The relationships between microstructure, grain growth and magnetic properties have been discussed.
