  • To understand the seed characteristics among cultivated types of Perilla crop and their weedy types in Korea and Japan, we studied the variation of 69 accessions by examining weight of 100 seeds, hardness of seed, germination percent and germination energy. The survey of the weight of 100 seeds and hardness of seed, clarified as follows; cultivated type of var. frutescens showed a range of 0.177 to 0.402 g with weight of 100 seeds, and most accessions of cultivated type of var. frutescens have soft seeds, except for several accessions, which have hard seeds, whereas weedy type of var. frutescens showed a range of 0.045 to 0.172 g with weight of 100 seeds, and has only hard seeds. While cultivated type of var. crispa showed a range of 0.054 to 0.101 g with weight of 100 seeds, and has only hard seeds. The weedy type of var. crispa showed a range of 0.059 to 0.135 g with weight of 100 seeds, and has only hard seeds. According to the result of germination tests, although the most accessions of cultivated and weedy types of var. frutescens and cultivated and weedy types of var. crispa showed below 50% germination rate at the first germination test, but some accessions of cultivated type of var. frutescens showed above 50% germination. While, in the second or third germination tests, most accessions of cultivated types of Perilla crop and their weedy types showed above 50% germination rates, except for several accessions. As a result, in this study, the average of germination percent and germination energy among accessions of cultivated types of Perilla crop and their weedy types showed respectively the highest value at the third germination test, but showed the lowest value at the first germination test. In addition, the germination percent and germination energy showed much higher in the room temperature condition than in $28^{\circ}C$ constant-temperature condition. Although our results may be required much clearly survey in the further study, this current results will be help for our understanding the variation of seed characteristics among cultivated types of Perilla crop and their weedy types in Korea and Japan.

  • This experiment was conducted to improve the germination when we sowed Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L. Local vas. Jinjoo) in the up-land.. The results are summerized as follows 1. There is no difference on the germination of Chinese milk vetch from $15^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$. Germination ratio is 7l%, speed is 60% and mean of germinating day. is about 4. But at $10^{\circ}C$ germination ratio and speed are decreased as 65%, 8% but mean of germinating day is increased as 8. 2. Chemicals used for improve of germination $KNO_3$, $H_2SO_4$, HCl, NaOCl, NaOH and GA were increased about 6~8% of germination ratio. 3. Germination in response to soil covering up depth, surface sowing showed 68% of germination and not more than 4cm the seed is germinated 60% but not less than 6cm, germination ratio is not more than 50%. 4. Soil water content needed in the germination is proper about 70~80% of field water capacity and the ratio is 65% but not. more than 40% germination ratio is not more than 31%. 5. Germination in response to seed treatment (1 day sbsorption /1 day dry) germination ratio is not decreased when it treated 2 times but not less than 3 times it decreased seriously and not less that: 5 times it decreased not more than 31%. 6. Germination in response to seed largement, small seed is not good for germination, so seeds harvested after the majority of the seed is ripened.

  • Seed germination and dormancy of three green manure seeds such as hairy vetch, crimson clover and narrow-leaved vetch (Vicia angustifolia L.) produced in Milyang, southern part of Korea were investigated to provide a basic information on the stability of seedling establishment in green manure seeds. In addition, the effect of seed storage duration on the germinability of imported hairy vetch and crimson seeds was also investigated. To determine the seed maturity time of three green manure seeds, the seeds were harvested manually at May 25, May 30, and June 4, and the 100-seed weight, germinability and percentage of hard seed were evaluated. Freshly harvested seeds of three green manure crops were strongly dormant because of hard seed coat. Germination percentage of the three green manure crops varied depending on the seed harvest time ranging from 30 - 52% in hairy vetch, 16 - 35% in crimson clover and 2 - 61% in V. angustifolia, respectively. Of the three crops, crimson clover and V. angustifolia matured early on May 30 to June 4 (around 35 to 40 days after flower) but hairy vetch seed did not mature until June 4 based on the seed germinability. The matured seed of crimson clover and V. angustifolia germinated less than 20% while scarification on seed coat significantly overcome the innate dormancy. On the other hand, the seed germination of hairy vetch and crimson clover was lower under dark than in the presence of light. The germination percentage of the imported hairy vetch and crimson clover seeds showed high with 77 - 79%, 94 - 95%, respectively, but the seed germination significantly declined by 21 - 32%, 30 - 40% after one-year of storage under natural conditions. The seeds germinated only 8 - 13% for hairy vetch but crimson clover did not germinate at all after two years storage. These results indicate V. angustifolia and crimson clover mature at May 30 to June 4 but hairy vetch did not. The imported hairy vetch and crimson clover seeds should be used within one-year after import for stable seedling establishment in green manure-rice cultivation cropping system.

  • In order to obtain an easy and effective scarification method for stimulating the seed germination of Korean lawn grass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), sodium hypochlorite (SH), which is used as a commercial bleach and a seed disinfestant, was tested as a chemical scarifier instead of potassium hydroxide (KOH). 1. Scarification with 4% SH for 2 hours followed by 8-hour water-rinse stimulated seed germination more effectively compared to generalized scarification method by KOH treatment. 2. The degree of stimulating seed gemination was different by the various water-rinsing time after SH treatment, but the optimum rinsing time was about 4 to 8 hours. 3. GA treatment after SH scarification stimulated seed germination. However, the stimulation effect of GA was not showed in non-scarified control. 4. SH treatment significantly decreased the percentage of the infection of microflora in seed samples compared to KOH treatment. 5. Under practical seed scarification conditions for stimulating germination of Korean lawn grass seed. SH may have advantages over KOH with respect to ease of preparing, securing and handling.

  • It was found that seed germination and seedling growth of selected species were inhibited by phytotoxic substance released from fir trees. The aqueous extracts of leaves caused significant inhibition in the seed germination of the receptor plants, Whereas seed germination of some species was not inhibited in extracts of leaves, but seedling elongation of the receptor plants was also decreased by the aqueous extract. Dry weight growth was slightly increased in lower concentration of the extract, while that was proportionally inhibited by higher concentration of the extracts. Chemical substances of fir trees were shown the biological toxicity. The GC method was employed for analysis of phytotoxic chemicals and sixteen chemical substances were identified such as benzoic, phenylacetic, etc. Also 33 volatile substances were identified from the fir tree. These chemical compounds are assumed the substances related to allelopathic potential of Abies holophylla plant species.

  • Shimizuomyces paradoxus showed no inhibitory effect against plant pathogen fungi, such as Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and Alternaria solani. The S. paradoxus culture filtrate showed higher seed germination and seedling growth rates in canola than distilled water and potato-dextrose broth. A conidial suspension of $1.0{\times}10^4/mL$ resulted in the highest growth stimulating effects on total plant length, and fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots in cucumber, when compared to the highest suspension concentration. Total plant length and shoot weight increased with the foliar spray treatment, and root length and root weight increased by simultaneous treatments of soil drenching and foliar spray in cucumber. Lower concentrations of the S. paradoxus conidial suspension increased the harvest of tomato fruit.

  • To investigate the possibility of crypreservation of mulberry seeds in liquid nitrogen(LN$_2$), characteristics of the seeds were examined after picking mulberry syncarps and drying-heat treatment. Storage in LN$_2$has the potential of providing indifinite preservation of valuable seed germplasm. Determining the tolerance of seeds among given cultivars to LN$_2$cooling and subsequent rewarming is the first step to establishing the feasibility of LN$_2$storage. Seeds of 4 mulberry varities were treated to LN$_2$(-196$\^{C}$) for 24 hours after drying heat treatment. Seed moisture content of Daeryukppong was the highest. As moisture content of mulberry seed was below 1%, storage in LN$_2$was safe. And drying heat treatment for 60 minutes was suitable to prevent decreased germination rate and germination vigor of seeds. The seeds of Cheongilppong were unsuibable to cryopreserve in LN$_2$for longterm storage.

  • Eleven phenolic compounds including caffeic acid were identified through analyzing the aqueous extracts of Pinus rigida by HPLC. Among them, protocatechuic acid was the maximum amount of 6.84 ppm. Seed germination of Cassia mimosoides var. nomame was significantly stimulated by the extract of P. rigida leaves in the proportion ot concentration. However, root growth was elevalted at a threshold concentration below 25%, but it was inhibited at high concentrations. In 50% extract of P. rigida, upward root tip of C. mimosoides var. nomame showed negageotropism which the root end showed necrosis. New isozyme bands were induced indicating concentration activity of peroxidase from the extract of C. mimosoides var. nomame, especially in the cathodic region. Although it reduced the mumber of isozyme bands of esterase, esterase activities were stimulated in the anodic region of C. mimosoides var. nomame. The activity of amylase was not remarkably different between control and treatment.

  • NIR specroscopy is widely used today as a quantitative technique for predicting the chemical composition of various agricultural product. However there exist few application for seed quality assessment, especially for seed germinability. This study is to show the possibilities of a nondestructive estimation of germinability in radish (Raphanus sativus L) seeds. The experiment carried out on one radish cultivar (Chung Su Gung Jung, Nong Woo Bio Co., Ltd.) harvested in 1993. NIR(Foss Co.) spectral measurements were carried out on the seeds surface of flat side. The seeds after spectral measurements were planted on blotter individually and observed germination. The seeds were characterized to nongermination and germination group, which in turn grouped to normal and abnormal germination and then compared with the NIR spectra. The spectra from these seed groups were compared each other, The result suggested that NIR spectra could be applicable to determine radish seeds germinability.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of Italian ryegrass cultivars for salt tolerance under in vitro condition. Italian ryegrass cultivars such as Greenfarm, Florida80, Kowinearly, and Hwasan101 were tested for their tolerance to various sodium chloride levels (0, 50, 150, 250, and 350 mM). The seed germination, growth, and activities of antioxidant enzymes were investigated under salt treatment. Physiological traits such as seed germination percentage, germination period, shoot and root length, and dry weight were suppressed under entire salt stress conditions. The results indicated that the highest germination percentage and shoot and root length were recorded at normal conditions. Increased sodium chloride levels caused a significant reduction in the seed germination and growth rate. Among the four tested cultivars, Italian ryegrass 'Hwasan101' could be considered as salt tolerant owing to its higher germination percentage, better seedling growth and antioxidant activities under salinity stress, whereas Greenfarm cultivar was more sensitive. The selection of Italian ryegrass cultivars for greater tolerance to saline environment would allow greater productivity from large saline lands.
