This study was conducted to evaluate the major agronomic characteristics Korean of 85 and Chinese Jilim Province of 5 local varieties of perilla at Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 2001. Perilla accessions examined were classified into three maturity groups, i.e, early, medium, and late maturity group of $19\;(23\%),\;57\;(67\%)$, and $9\;(10\%)$ accessions, respectively. The early and late maturity groups mainly consisted of collections from middle-northern area and southern area, respectively, while the medium group consisted of accessions from all over the country. But chinese Jilim collection wad all mediumgroup. Average 1,000-seed weight(TSW) was 2.7 g. TSW of the collection from Hamyang was the greatest a 3.9g, while the TSW of Pyungchang collection was the smallest as 1.7g, and most of collections produced medium and small seeds. Perilla accessions with greate 1,000-seed weight seemed to be belonged to the late maturity group. Chinese collection was 2.2 to 3.19g and overage was 2.6g in average. Accodingly TSW hadn't more variegation than Korean. Seed coat colors of gorilla accessions were dark brown$(30\%)$, brown$(55\%)$ and gray brown$(6\%)$, respectively. Among seed coat colors, brown color consisted of $91\%$. Chinese was dark brown$(20\%)$, brown$(80\%)$ in color. Positively correlated that stem height, the number of nodes, branches and flower clusters with Korean and Chinese collection, capsules per flower cluster and the length of flower cluster with Korean collection and 1,000-seed weight and maturing period, flower clusters, stem height and the number of nodes with Chinese collection. And negatively correlated that the number of capsules per flower cluster and 1,000-seed weight with Korean collection and the length of flower cluster, stem height, branches, the number of nodes and flower clusters with Chinese collection.
Infection rates of oyster ovarian parasite, Marteiliodes chungmuensis and productivity of the oyster shellstock infected with the parasite were investigated at the main seed collection areas in the southern coast of Korea where the extreme bad seed collection of oyster occurred in 1992 and 1993 to evaluate the cause of the bad seed collection. Additionally, the bacterial flora of the sea water and oyster lana were examined to identify the shellfish larva pathogenic bacteria like Vibrio sp. and Pseueomonas sp. In August 1992 to September 1993, infection rate of oyster ovarian parasite, M. chungmuensis at Tongyong, Kyongsangnam province, and Yosu, Chollanam province where the bad seed collection occurred, were $11.8\~100\%$ and $14.3\~100\%$, respectively. But the parasite was not detected in the shellstock collected at Daechon, Chungchongnam province. While a virus-like particle was identified in the cytoplasm of the egg infected by the parasite. The parasite infected egg was not able to fertilize completely. Uninfected egg in the gonad contaminated by the parasite could be able to fertilize but showed an abnormal development till D-shaped larva and then, died of necrosis after D-shaped lana. And some lana developed from low lipid content egg could not develop to the spat and died after the early umbo stage. The predominant bacteria in the oyster lana collected at bad seed collection areas were Pseudomonas sp. and Pseudomonas like bacteria and the occupancy rates were $53.3\~87.1\%$.
The time of seed collection is regarded as one of major concerns to obtain sound seeds. The physical and germinal aspects of Cryptomeria japonica D. Don (Taxodiaceae) seeds were analyzed to determine the optimum harvesting time in Korea. Cones were picked every 10 days from the $30^{th}$ of July to the $30^{th}$ of October in both 2005 and 2006. Seeds were collected from picked cones. Seed size and weight were not significant in two consecutive years. The 1,000-seed weight was 3.3 g for cones picked at the $18^{th}$ of August and 5.3 g for cones picked at the $30^{th}$ of September. The size of seeds was increased as the time of collection from the $18^{th}$ of August to the $30^{th}$ of September: from 19.3 mm to 21.3 mm in length and from 15.8 mm to 18.5 mm in width. Average germination rates in 2005 was 18.3% and 19.6% in 2006. The highest germination rate was 34.3% from seeds collected at the $30^{th}$ of September in 2005. In 2006, the highest germination rate was 31.7% for seeds collected at the same date as the 2005 seeds. After the end of September, germination rate was decreased in both years. The results implied that the best cone picking time for Korean C. japonica seeds is around the end of September.
This study was conducted to measure the major agronomic characteristics of 85 local varieties of perilla at Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 2001. Perilla accessions examined were classified into three maturity groups, i.e, early, medium, and late maturity group of 19 (23%),57 (67%), and 9 (10%) accessions, respectively. The early and late maturity groups mainly consisted of collections from middle-northern area and southern area, respectively, while the medium group consisted of accessions from all over the country. Average 1,000-seed weight (TSW) was 2.7 g. TSW of the collection from Hamyang was the greatest a 3.9 g, while the TSW of Pyungchang collection was the smallest as 1.7 g, and most of collections produced medium and small seeds. Perilla accessions with greate 1,000-seed weight seemed to be belonged to the late maturity group. Seed coat colors of perilla accessions were dark brown (30%), brown (55%) and gray brown (6%), respectively, Among seed coat colors, brown color consisted of 91%. Stem height, the number of nodes, branches, flower clusters, and capsules per flower cluster, and the length of flower cluster were positively correlated occ, while these characteristics were negatively correlated with the number of capsules per flower cluster and 1,000-seed weight. These results allowed us to select 5 perilla collections, containing 1 collection with gray white seed color, and 4 collections over 2.5g 1000 seed weight, as parental lines in the breeding program.
The timing of seed harvesting is an important decision in the management of seed orchards because it affects seed quality and yield. To investigate the effect of cone harvest time on seed quality and determine the optimal harvesting time, cones were regularly collected in seven times and germination tests were performed at each harvest time in two clonal seed orchards of Chamaecyparis obtusa. As cones developed, the percentage of seed germination increased before cone moisture content began to decrease significantly. The moisture contents of cones were highest at the first collection as 68.3% and 67.3% in Jeju and Gochang seed orchards respectively. At this time, germination speed was slowest, indicating poor seed vigour. The highest germination was found at the second stage in Jeju (36.5%) and at the seventh stage in Gochang (28.6%) seed orchard. The germination speed increased as cone moisture content decreased. Additionally, changes of seed vigour differed among the developmental stages in both seed orchards. Consequently, the optimal cone harvest time of C. obtusa seed orchards in Jeju was early September when high germination percentage was obtained. In Gochang seed orchards, late October was optimal cone harvest time when the germination speed was fast and the cone moisture content decreased.
An investigation was made to find regional differences and seed characteristics of buckwheats collected from 36 areas in Chungnam province in 1984, and the results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Grain types of the collected buckwheats were classified as winged, semi-winged and common types. All collections were on the average composed of 50.1 % of common grain types, 26.8 % of semi-winged type and 23.1 % of winged types, respectively. However, there was a great regional difference in components of each grain type among collections. 2. The mean 1000 grain weight was 24.9 gr. The regional differences in 1000 grain weight showed that a collection (collection no. 30) from Susan was 17.4 gr and a collection (collection. no. 16) from Suchon was 31.9 gr. There wasn't any significant relationship between grain types component and 1000 grain weight. 3. Germination of seeds was accelerated as temperature goes up from $5^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$. However, interesting germination pattern was observed. That is, seeds from Suchon (collection no. 16), Hongsung (collection no. 23), Cheonweon(collection no. 35), and Yesan (collection no. 27) showed abrupt decrease of germination rate at the temperature of $15^{\circ}C$. The seeds collected from Suchon (collection no. 29), Dangjin (collection no. 32) and from Chungyang (collection no. 21) showed decrease of germination rate at $25^{\circ}C$. These seeds showed, however, the increase of germination percentage at temperature higher than $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. The germination rate for the most collections at $5^{\circ}C$ was less than 10%. However, seeds from Asan (collection no. 33) and Daeduk (collection no. 3) showed 20% and 30% of germination rate at $5^{\circ}C$, respectively. 4. Color of seed coat could be classified into two maj or colors, dark and dark brown. Based on the seed coat color and grain types, all the collections could be classified into the following six categories: winged-black, semi-winged-black, common-black, winged-dark brown, semi-winged dark brown and common-dark brown. The different light absorption rate was found within the UV light zone (190-390 nm) depending upon the two different major seed coat color.
To compare seed collection and the growth of Anadara subcrenata in Suncheon and Boseong Bays, environmental factors and the growth of larvae and spats were investigated from August 2008 to July 2009 in commercial farming sites in both bays. The variation in water temperature in both bays was similar, but the salinity was lower in Suncheon Bay than in Boseong Bay. The chlorophyll-a content was higher in Suncheon Bay due to the large inflow of freshwater. The density and shell length of A. subcrenata larvae did not differ significantly between the two bays. However, the relative growth of shell height to shell length was significantly higher in Suncheon Bay (P<0.05). The growth of A. subcrenata spats attached to a collector was significantly faster in Suncheon Bay (P<0.05). The spats in Suncheon and Boseong Bays grew to 24.3 and 21.0 mm in shell length, respectively, within 1 year after spawning, and the shell length reached 35.6 and 34.8 mm, respectively, within 2 years of spawning. The initial spats density was higher in Boseong Bay, but the growth of spats was better in Suncheon Bay. The faster growth of A. subcrenata in Suncheon Bay can be explained by the high chlorophyll-a content in this bay. Based on the low survival (%) and slower growth rate of spats in Boseong Bay, the commercial culture density of A. subcrenata in Boseong Bay should be reduced to the optimum level of the carrying capacity.
Korean safflower seed has been known to have healing effects on both bone fracture and osteoporosis. On the base of such a notice, this experiment was carried out to explore the effects of safflower seed on bone formation and bone repair. The toxicity test and the effect of Korean safflower seed were evaluated with 60 rats, 3-month old. Forty Sprague-Dawley rats composed of 20 male and 20 female were underwent unilateral tibial defect and then fastened with unilateral fixators. The operated rats were divided into two groups depending on the composition of diet, such as positive control group fed normal diet(C-OP group) and safflower seed group fed 30% of safflower seed diet and 70% of normal diet(S-OP group). Another 20 rats without operation were maintained, each 10 rats were fed either normal diet or 30% of safflower seed diet and 70% of normal diet, and observed the toxicity of safflower seed by measuring weight and urine parameters. Postoperative radiography were taken once in 2 weeks to evaluate callus formation for operated groups and blood collection via heart puncture were carried out once in 3 weeks for 3 groups. The concentration of Ca and Pi in serum were measured using both auto Kit and $^{31}$ P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance(NMR). At present study, no toxic effect was observed from both weight increment and urine index after feeding the safflower seed diet. The comparison of the radiography between C-OP and S-OP group were showed that the safflower seed diet appeared to stimulate the formation of callus in the rat. The ratio of Ca/P in serum was low in S-OP group compared to C-OP group with the auto Kit, but there were no significant differences between two groups (p < 0.05). In addition, the variations of Pi values in NMR examination were also confirmed based on the result of auto Kit. In conclusion, this study implied that safflower seed might influence to bone formation and shorten the periods of remedy by stimulating the calcification of bone

Seed-borne pathogens in crops reduce the seed germination rate and hamper seedling growth, leading to significant yield loss. Due to the growing concerns about environmental damage and the development of resistance to agrochemicals among pathogen populations, there is a strong demand for eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic chemicals in agriculture. It has been well established during the last few decades that plant seeds harbor diverse microbes, some of which are vertically transmitted and important for plant health and productivity. In this study, we isolated culturable endophytic bacteria and fungi from soybean seeds and evaluated their antagonistic activities against common bacterial and fungal seed-borne pathogens of soybean. A total of 87 bacterial isolates and 66 fungal isolates were obtained. Sequencing of 16S rDNA and internal transcribed spacer amplicon showed that these isolates correspond to 30 and 15 different species of bacteria and fungi, respectively. Our antibacterial and antifungal activity assay showed that four fungal species and nine bacterial species have the potential to suppress the growth of at least one seed-borne pathogen tested in the study. Among them, Pseudomonas koreensis appears to have strong antagonistic activities across all the pathogens. Our collection of soybean seed endophytes would be a valuable resource not only for studying biology and ecology of seed endophytes but also for practical deployment of seed endophytes toward crop protection.

Seed dispersal supports community structure, maintains genetic connectivity across fragmented landscapes, and influences vegetation assemblages. In the Philippines, only two seed dispersal studies have compared different dispersal agents. We examined the seed dispersal patterns of water, wind, birds, and bats in the Caliraya Watershed, Philippines. We aimed to determine the floral species that were dispersed and how the forest characteristics influenced seed dispersal. By running seed rain traps and drift litter collection from March to June 2022, we analyzed 14,090 seeds in a privately owned study site within the watershed. Water did not exclusively disperse any species and acted as a secondary disperser. Seed density (seeds/trap) was significantly higher for bird-dispersed (n=166) and bat-dispersed (n=145) seeds than for wind-dispersed (n=79) seeds (One-way analysis of variance [ANOVA]: F2,87=16.21, P<0.0001). Species number (species/trap) was significantly higher for bird-dispersed (n=3.7) and bat-dispersed (n=3.9) seeds than for wind-dispersed (n=0.2) seeds (One-way ANOVA: F2,87 =16.67, P<0.0001). Birds dispersed more species because they are more diverse and access a wider variety of fruits, unlike bats. Birds and bats target different fruits and provide separate seed dispersal services. Generalized linear model analyses revealed that the number and basal area of fleshy fruit trees most strongly influenced the bird seed dispersal patterns. Therefore, we recommend a three-way approach to restoration efforts in the Caliraya Watershed: (1) ensure the presence of fleshy fruit trees in restoration zones, (2) assist the establishment of mid-successional and wind-dispersed trees, and (3) intensify the conservation efforts for both flora and faunal diversity.
