Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum M.) is one of the most important crops to the fresh vegetable market and the food processing industry. To evaluate genetic variation in tomato fruits, major characteristics such as soluble solids, acidity and carotenoid contents were analyzed for 771 genetic resource lines. Lines in red color was about 85% which is the largest one followed by peach color, yellow, green, orange, and black. The sweetness of juice ranged from 2.2 to 11.5% (in brix), the average being 5.6%. The acidity ranged from 0.124% to 1.665%, and the average was 0.881%. The lycopine contents was up to 80.4 ${\mu}g/g$, and 43.4 ${\mu}g/g$ in average. ${\beta}$-carotine ranged 1.8 to 48.8 ${\mu}g/g$ and it average was 10.8 ${\mu}g/g$. Statistical analysis indicates that there is coefficient of correlation between acidity and sweetness, acidity and pH, pH and lycopine, lycopine and ${\beta}$-carotine. It is expected that the result of this study can be used for breeding more competitive species with respect to contents in sugar or functional chemicals from the selected characteristic species.
It was aimed to study the chemical characteristics and volatile compounds of juices extracted by press (PE) and centrifugal extractors (CE). Citrons cut up cross direction were used as samples in PE. Proportion ratio of peel, flesh, and seed of citron were 43.9, 39.4 and 16.7%, respectively. Yield of juice increased with weight to 120g of citron fruit. pH, brix, pulp, oily materials, amino nitrogen and yield of juice extracted by CE were higher than those of juice by PE. Acidity and transmittance of juice extracted by PE were higher than those of juice by CE. Free sugars of citron juice were consisted of fructose, glucose and sucrose. Free sugar contents of juice by CE were twice as much as those of PE. Major volatile compounds of total steam distillation matters of citron juice extracted by PE were dl-limonene, ${\gamma}-terpinene\;{\beta}-farnesene$, sabinene, linalool, ${\beta}-myrcene$ and terpinolene, while those by CE were dl-limonene, ${\gamma}-terpinene$, sabinene, ${\beta}-myrcene,\;{\alpha}-pinene$, linalool and terpinolene. dl-Limonene and ${\gamma}-terpinene$ consisted of $73{\sim}83%$ of total volatile compounds. dl-Limonene of juice by CE increased about 6% that of juice by PE. ${\beta}-Farnesene$ were observed trace in juice by CE but presented in 7% in juice by PE. The results would suggested that chemical characteristics and volatile compounds of citron juice seemed to depend on extraction methods.

Two main MBE growth techniques have been used: plasma-assisted MBE (PA-MBE), which utilizes a rf plasma to supply active nitrogen, and ammonia MBE, in which nitrogen is supplied by pyrolysis of NH3 on the sample surface during growth. PA-MBE is typically performed under metal-rich growth conditions, which results in the formation of gallium droplets on the sample surface and a narrow range of conditions for optimal growth. In contrast, high-quality GaN films can be grown by ammonia MBE under an excess nitrogen flux, which in principle should result in improved device uniformity due to the elimination of droplets and wider range of stable growth conditions. A drawback of ammonia MBE, on the other hand, is a serious memory effect of NH3 condensed on the cryo-panels and the vicinity of heaters, which ruins the control of critical growth stages, i.e. the native oxide desorption and the surface reconstruction, and the accurate control of V/III ratio, especially in the initial stage of seed layer growth. In this paper, we demonstrate that the reliable and reproducible growth of GaN on Si (110) substrates is successfully achieved by combining two MBE growth technologies using rf plasma and ammonia and setting a proper growth protocol. Samples were grown in a MBE system equipped with both a nitrogen rf plasma source (SVT) and an ammonia source. The ammonia gas purity was >99.9999% and further purified by using a getter filter. The custom-made injector designed to focus the ammonia flux onto the substrate was used for the gas delivery, while aluminum and gallium were provided via conventional effusion cells. The growth sequence to minimize the residual ammonia and subsequent memory effects is the following: (1) Native oxides are desorbed at $750^{\circ}C$ (Fig. (a) for [$1^-10$] and [001] azimuth) (2) 40 nm thick AlN is first grown using nitrogen rf plasma source at $900^{\circ}C$ nder the optimized condition to maintain the layer by layer growth of AlN buffer layer and slightly Al-rich condition. (Fig. (b)) (3) After switching to ammonia source, GaN growth is initiated with different V/III ratio and temperature conditions. A streaky RHEED pattern with an appearance of a weak ($2{\times}2$) reconstruction characteristic of Ga-polarity is observed all along the growth of subsequent GaN layer under optimized conditions. (Fig. (c)) The structural properties as well as dislocation densities as a function of growth conditions have been investigated using symmetrical and asymmetrical x-ray rocking curves. The electrical characteristics as a function of buffer and GaN layer growth conditions as well as the growth sequence will be also discussed. Figure: (a) RHEED pattern after oxide desorption (b) after 40 nm thick AlN growth using nitrogen rf plasma source and (c) after 600 nm thick GaN growth using ammonia source for (upper) [110] and (lower) [001] azimuth.
This research had been executed to find out the structure of Magnolia obovata community, a dispersal range and characteristics of scatter investigation, and to prepare management measure of it. In the result of this study, Magnolia obovata was distributed in a native plant community from planting trees of UNESCO Peace Center. The maximum numbers of Magnolia obovata were found in $20{\sim}100m$ from trees of mother. Seed of Magnolia obovata has a characteristics of gravity dispersal. But some individuals was found in 420m from its tree of mother. Seeds of Magnolia obovata has a characteristics of animal dispersal, too. Major species of animal dispersal are Garrulus glandarius, Ciurus vulgaris coreae, and Tamias sibiricus asiaticus in the study site. The importance value between native plants and Magnolia obovata had a negative relation. Because Magnolia obovata is more shade tolerant than other trees. Also, the growth of Magnolia obovata is faster than other trees. And so if the influence of Magnolia obovata reduce, it is necessary to expand native plant community, and to cut Magnolia obovata over 10m of the height and over 10cm of the DBH, for preventing influence of Magnolia obovata.
Characteristic chemical compositions of jujube wine using different preparation methods including fermentation were investigated. Fermentation for jujube wine started using whole fruit (JW1), seed-removed fruit (JW2) and whole fruit heated at $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 h and then extracted (JW3). The free amino acids and flavors were analyzed quantitatively by HPLC and GC-MS. A total of 18 amino acids were identified in all samples. The amount of total free amino acids was detected from 141-210 ppm (JW1), 147-342 ppm (JW2), and 336-362 ppm (JW3). Large amounts of proline, aspartate, glutamate, arginine and alanine were detected in jujube wine. Thirteen kinds of volatile compounds including six alcoholic compounds (ethyl alcohol, iso-butyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, iso-amyl alcohol, n-amyl alcohol, and phenethyl alcohol), four ester (ethyl acetate, hexyl acetate, ethyl caprylate, and phenethyl acetate) and three aldehydes (diethylacetal, furfural, and benzaldehyde) were detected. Ethyl alcohol (30.50-33.95% peak area), benzaldehyde (2.55-15.97% ratio), furfural (0.07-15.28% ratio), iso-amyl alcohol (1.04-14.73% ratio), and phenethyl acetal (0.78-9.28% ratio) were abundant in jujube wine.
The seeds of naturally growing Heteropappus hispidus (Thunb.) were treated by nine different doses (0, 10, 20, 40, 80, 120, 160, 200, 300, 400 Gy) of gamma rays to investigate their germination rate and to quantity the characteristics of their germinated plants as like as leaf appearance and length, the formation rate of anthocyanin color in stem 30 days after germination, the formation rate of rosette leaf and multi-shoot, the flowering and seed-bearing, and shoot length. The germination rate at least up to 120Gy was not greatly affected but was rapidly decreased at over 160Gy. It seemed that lethal dose ($LD_{50}$) of germination was 160Gy. The leaf appearance and growth was also inhibited, but the formation rate of anthocyanin color in the flower stem was enhanced up to 30% with dose. The rosette plants were observed in plants irradiated with higher than 40Gy. Multi-shoots were developed over 80Gy. For a short shoot length and bundle of thin stem, it was considered that they can be selected as the potential pot flower plants, through genetic fixation. In particular, it was suggested that the formation of anthocyanin color in flower stem, rosette and multi-shoot plants induced by the high dose of gamma rays could be utilized as the morphological markers for the mutant selection of Heteropappus hispidus (Thunb.).
Reciprocal interspecific hybrids between N. glauca(2n=24) and N. langsdorffii(2n=18) were obtained by intercrossing. One hundred percent of F$_1$ seeds was produced from intercrossing of N. glauca $\times$ N. langsdorffii, whereas the frequency of F$_1$ hybrid seed formation from N. langsdorffii $\times$ N. glauca was very low. However, all the hybrid seeds were germinated well and then grown to normal plantlets. All the plants of F$_1$ hybrids have chromosome number of interspecific hybrids (2n=21). From observation of morphological characteristic, the structure of petrol, leaf, flower, and the morphology of pollen have characteristics of F1 hybrid. Spontaneous tumors (genetic tumor) were formed from each F$_1$ hybrid; the genetic tumor arose at the reproductive phase when the maternal type of F$_1$ hybrid came from N. glauca, while the genetic tumor arose only after reproductive phase when the maternal type of F$_1$ hybrid came from N. langsdorffii. The genetic tumor actively proliferated on hormone-free medium and produced numerous teratoma shoots. In addition, normal leaf or stem explants of F$_1$ hybrid produced calli on hormone-free medium after 15 days of culture, the calli produced new numerous teratoma shoots after 30 days. The frequency of teratoma shoot formation from rnterspecific hybrid was higher in the N. glauca $\times$ N. langsdorffii than in the N. langsdorffii $\times$ N. glauca. Root development from the teratoma shoots was hardly obtained. Teratoma shoots without roots in vitro can form genetic tumor at the vegetative growth phase after tissue culture.

A new Phalaenopsis cultivar 'SM 333' was bred by Sangmiwon Orchid, Korea, which produces young plants through tissue culture techniques. The new cultivar 'SM 333', showing the phenotype of multiflora with pink color and small, multibranching-type characteristics, was derived from crossing between Phalaenopsis 'Odoriko' and 'Be Tris'. An elite individual number '02-03-33' later termed 'SM 333' was selected among about 300 individual progenies, based on an intensive selection process covering vegetative and flowering distinctiveness over more than 2 years. In year 2004-2005, the 1st and 2nd characteristic analyses were carried out through performance and uniformity tests. 'SM 333' shows flower color that is bright clean pink (RHS # RP69D) and flower shape that is formal type with 5.0 and 5.8 cm in flower height and width, respectively. 'SM 333' is regarded as raceme flower type suitable for the small casual flower market. The leaves of 'SM 333' grow horizontally and about 20.8 cm in length and 6.5 cm in width. This cultivar also possesses no genetic variation, and is amenable to fast in vitro propagation and easy growth due to its vigorous growth habit. This 'SM333' was registered (Reg. # 2916) with Korea Seed & Variety Service (KSVS) on 1st December, 2009, and the plant breeder's right is currently controlled by Sangmiwon Orchid Company, Korea.

An Asiatic lily cultivar 'Yeri' was developed in 2005 at National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea. The cross was made in 1993 between Asiatic lily 'Geneve', a light pink colored cultivar, and 'Montreux', deep purple colored cultivar. The first selection was done and was tentatively named as 'A95-68' in 1995. After in vitro multiplication and bulbing production, growth and flowering characteristic tests were conducted from 1996 to 2003. The evaluation of characteristics was performed and named as 'Wongyo C1-19' in 2005 that was registered as 'Yeri' to the registration office of Korea Seed & Variety Service. 'Yeri' flowered at the first of July and grew average 34.6 cm stem in length. Flowers bloomed facing upward, unspotted in petals and deep purple (RHS, RP58A). The size of flower was 13.3 cm. Mean petal length and width was 7.7 cm and 2.7 cm, respectively. Leaves were 5.1 cm long and 0.5 cm wide, respectively. The weight and size of bulb were 9.6 g and 11.7 cm, respectively. Year-round flowering can be done by storing the bulb under $-1.5^{\circ}C$ conditions. For forced cultivation, it was necessary to add calcium to the fertilizer or remove side scales to prevent leaf scorch. It was needed to control Botrytis disease in wet season.
