Sedimentation is one of the most common and important units in conventional water treatment plants. Structure such as various baffle walls and inclined plate settler may be obstacles to the horizontal flow when it is poorly designed. Therefore, the effects of these structures on characteristics of hydraulic flow must be evaluated to improve the settling efficiency of the floc. The hydraulic characteristic of the four sedimentations at the three real WTPs (water treatment plants), which have different structural properties respectively inside the settling basin, were investigated by tracer (fluoride) test. The inclined plate settler installed inside settling basin caused a undesirable impact on horizontal flow and produced dead zone. Intermediate baffle and solid baffle wall under the inclined plate settler at GE plant help to minimize the formation of density currents and flow short circuiting. However, installing perforated baffle under the inclined plate settler at other plants could not induce even distribution of flow. NaF used as a tracer was recovered more than 90% at investigated all basin. Morill index ($t_{90}/t_{10}$), Modal index ($t_p/T-HRT$) and short-circuiting index ($[M-HRT-t_p/M-HRT$) were determined from tracer test results performed at three WTPs. Those indices ranged 2.99~3.45, 0.44~0.72 and 0.23~0.47, respectively.
This study investigated organic carbon fluxes in Ulleung Basin sediments, East Sea based on a chamber experiment and geochemical analyses. At depths greater than 2,000 m, Ulleung Basin sediments have high organic carbon contents (over 2.0%). Apparent sedimentation rates (ASR) calculated from excess $^{210}Pb$ activity distribution, varied from 0.036 to $0.047\;cm\;yr^{-1}$. The mass accumulation rates (MAR) calculated from porosity, grain density (GD), and ASR, ranged from 131 to $184\;g\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$. These results were in agreement with sediment trap results obtained at a water depth of 2100 m. Input fluxes of organic carbon varied from 7.89 to $11.08\;gC\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$ at the basin sediments, with an average of $9.56\;gC\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$. Below a sediment depth of 15cm, burial fluxes of organic carbon ranged from 2.02 to $3.10\;gC\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$. Within the basin sediments, regenerated fluxes of organic carbon estimated with oxygen consumption rate, varied from 6.22 to $6.90\;gC\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$. However, the regenerated fluxes of organic carbon calculated by subtracting burial flux from input flux, varied from 5.87 to $7.98\;gC\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$. Respectively, the proportions of the input flux, regenerated flux, and burial flux to the primary production ($233.6\;gC\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$) in the Ulleung Basin were about 4.1%, 3.0%, and 1.1%. These proportions were extraordinarily higher than the average of world open ocean. Based upon these results, the Ulleung Basin might play an integral role in the deposition and removal of organic carbon.
Angelicae gigantis Radix (dried root of Angelica gigas) including major bioactives such as decursin and decursinol angelate provides rich flavors and several healthy benefits. Recent studies have shown that ultrafine powders of herbal medicines provide better physical properties and biological activities. Thus, ultrafine Angelica powder was added into the oligosaccharide syrup to provide flavors and healthy benefits in this study. Angelicae gigantis Radix was pulverized into d(0.1) = 3.220, d(0.5) = 7.822, and d(0.9) = 7.817 $\mu$m respectively using an air-flow mill. The ultrafine Angelica powder was added into the oligosaccharide syrup process with different ratios of water to oligosaccharide syrup at 1:5, 1:8, 1:11, and 1:14. The physicochemical properties such as viscosity and bulk density were measured. The Stokes' law was applied to predict the sedimentation velocity of the added Angelica powder in the syrup. The Angelica syrup prepared in this experiment showed good stability since the Angelica particles precipitated down slowly. The ratio of water to oligosaccharide syrup at 1:11 showed the optimal preparation in terms of the stability and the viscosity. The ultrafine-sized herbal powders such as Angelicae gigantis Radix have potentials for various food and pharmaceutical applications.
An industrial nuclear technique based on the use of an X-ray profiler was implemented to estimate the densities or concentrations of sediments present in an Atlantic maritime zone in the areas subjected to dredging under the governance of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). The sediment profiles show in most areas there is a concentration of between 1.00-1.15 g/cm3 except for one area in particular, the density starts at 1.20 g/cm3 and even reaches values greater than 1.50 g/cm3; therefore, an already consolidated sediment is present, which, depending on the depth found. Values of 1.265 g/cm3, 1.297 g/cm3, 1.185 g/cm3 obtained by ACP previous studies are within the range of 1.20-1.30 g/cm3 measured with the nucleonic gauge. However, it should be noted that during the tests with the X ray profiler, sediment densities values greater than the aforementioned limit were also obtained that varying according at depths close to 12 m and 18 m with values reached up to 1.513 g/cm3 and 1.60 g/cm3, respectively. This demonstrates that sediment accumulation depends on depth. This nucleonic gauge is feasible technique for the study of the sedimentation phenomenon in channel basins and even in other projects nationwide.
The thermal stress between W plasma-facing material (PFM) and Cu heat sink in fusion reactors can be significantly reduced by using a W-Cu functionally graded material (W-Cu FGM) interlayer. However, there is still considerable stress at the joining interface between W and W-Cu FGM in the W/W-Cu FGM/Cu portions. In this work, we fabricate W skeletons with continuous gradients in porosity by a modified sedimentation method. Sintering densification behavior and pore characteristics of the sedimented W skeletons at different sintering temperatures were investigated. After Cu infiltration, the final W-Cu FGM was obtained. The results indicate that the pore size and porosity in the W skeleton decrease gradually with the increase of sintering temperature, but the increase of skeleton sintering temperature does not reduce the gradient range of composition distribution of the final prepared W-Cu FGM. And W-Cu FGM with composition distribution from pure W to W-20.5wt.% Cu layer across the section was successfully obtained. The thickness of the pure W layer is about one-fifth of the whole sample thickness. In addition, the prepared W-Cu FGM has a relative density of 94.5 % and thermal conductivity of 185 W/(m·K). The W-Cu FGM prepared in this work may provide a good solution to alleviate the thermal stress between W PFM and Cu heat sink in the fusion reactors.
Column tests in the laboratory were preformed to investigate characteristics of settling process of dredged soil sampled from in-situ. Test results were analyzed by using the existing theories on discrete settling and hindered settling. From column tests of monitoring the interface with time, settling was found to be a linear process with time and the settling rate was increased with initial water content of slurry. The settling rate was also observed to decrease with increasing initial height of slurry. Most of settling process were composed of flocculation, hindered settling and self-weight consolidation. On the other hands, flocculation of soil during settling was observed and it was found that the size and density of flocculated particles could be analyzed by using the method proposed by Richardson and Zaki.
Electroflotation, which is used as an alternative to sedimentation, is a separation treatment process that uses small bubbles to remove low-density particulates. Making allowances for recent collision efficiency diagram based on trajectory analysis, it is necessary to tailor zeta potential of bubbles that collide with negatively charged particles. In this paper, the study was performed to investigate the effects of magnesium and aluminium ions on zeta potential of bubbles. And, it was studied to find out factors which could affect the positively charged bubbles. Consequently, zeta potential of bubbles increased both with higher concentration of metal ions and in the acidic pH value. And, a probable principle that explained the procedure of charge reversal could be a combined mechanism with both specific adsorption of hydroxylated species and laying down of hydroxide precipitate. It also depended on the metal ion concentration in the solution to display its capacity to control the bubble surface.

An Arpase complex has been purified to apparent homogeniety from the extract of chick skeletal muscle using conventional column chromatographies and glycerol density gradient centrifugation. This eWe has a sedimentation coefficient of 15S as determined by the gradient centrifugation and therefore is referred to as the 15S ATPase. It behaves as a 600-kOa molecule upon gel filtration analysis using a Superose-6 column. However, the ATPase runs as a 95-kDa polvpeptide when analyzed by polvacrvlamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Thus, the Arpase is likely to consist of six identical subunits of 95 KDa. It has a Km value of 0.6 mM for ATP and is maximally active at pH 9.
