For the scientific and systematic study of sediment deposits along Yeongsan river, total 13 core samples were taken from Yeongsan river. The thickness of sediment deposits is 22.0m at YS 1, 20.0m YS 2, 18.5m YS 3, 12.0m YS 4, 3.0m YS 5, 5.5m YS 7, 3.0m YS 8, 5.9m YS 9, 5.0m YS 10 on main stream of Yeongsan river. The thickness of deposit is increasing from upstream to downstream. The composition of sediments dominates sandy gravel on the upstream and the lower part on the downstream, and mud deposits of $11m{\sim}16m$ thick on the upper part of on the downstream(YS 1, YS 2, and YS 3). Contents of organic carbon and calcium carbonates occur being contrary to each other toward upstream. The content of organic carbon increases upstream, that of calcium carbonates decreases. According to size analysis of sediment, the content of gravel increases and mud decreases from downstream to upstream. Sediment deposits can be divided into two types whether gravel is or not. But this boundary is clear in the downstream(YS 1$\sim$YS 4) but is vague in the upstream. The result of this study could be provided engineering, environment, and architecture with geological background as the essential basis.
Recently, turbidity problem is one of the hot issues in dam and reservoir management works. Main reason to bring about high density turbid water is sediment yield by rainfall intensity energy. Because existing researches didn't consider diverse types of crops, it was difficult to calculate more accurate soil erosion and sediment yield. This study was evaluated the reduction efficiency of soil erosion and sediment yield using ginseng layer extracted from IKONOS satellite image, and the area and the ratio of ginseng area represented $0.290km^2$ and 0.94%. The reduction efficiency of soil erosion considering ginseng area represented low value in 0.9% using GIS-based RUSLE model, because the area of ginseng was small compared to areas of other agricultural lands. To reflect future land use change, this study was calculated the reduction efficiency of soil erosion and sediment yield by considering many scenarios as kinds of crops of paddy, dry field, orchard, and other agricultural areas convert to the ginseng district. As result of analysis of them according to scenarios, scenario (1) in which dry field was converted to ginseng area and scenario (2) in which fully agricultural lands were converted to ginseng area showed high reduction efficiency as 31.3% and 34.8% respectively, compared to existing research which didn't consider ginseng area. Methodology suggested in this study will be very efficient tools to help reservoir management related to high density turbid water.
This study presents multi-variable sequence model for a broader application of sequence concept proposed by Exxon group. The concept of the multi-variable model is based on the fact that internal organization and boundary type of the sequences are determined by three varying factors including 3rd-order cycles of eustasy, and tectonic movement and sediment influx with 2nd-order changes. Instead of Exxon group's systems tracts, this model adopts parasequence sets as the fundamental building blocks of the sequence, because they are descriptive stratigraphic units simply defined by internal stacking pattern, reflecting interactions of accommodation and sediment influx. Seven sequence types which vary in number and type of internal parasequence sets are formulated as associations of four types of accommodation development and three grades of sediment influx. In the southwestern margin of Ulleung Basin, the multi-variable sequence analysis of shelf-slope sequence shows systematic changes in stratal patterns and the numbs, of constituent parasequence sets (i.e. sequence type). These changes are interpreted to reflect temporal and spatial changes in type and rate of tectonic movement and sediment influx, as a result of back-arc opening and closing. During the back-arc opening, rapid subsidence, continuous rise of relative sea level, and high sediment influx gave rise to sequences dominantly of single progradational parasequence set. In the early stage of back-arc closing accompanied by local contractional deformation, different types of sequences contemporaneously formed depending on the spatial changes in tectonically-controlled accommodation and influx rates. During the subsequent slow back-arc subsidence, rise-dominated relative sea-level cycle was coupled with moderate to high sedimentation rate to have resulted in sequences consisting of $2~3$ parasequence sets.
The present study aims to investigate the long-term channel morphological changes derived from channelization, embankment and levee construction works in unregulated fluvial channel of the Jiseock River. Analyses of aerial photographs taken past (Year 1966) and recent (Year 2002) showed the temporally remarkable changes in channel planform such as channel shape, bar migration, vegetation encroachment in bar. During the period, the natural single threading changed into braided types together with decreasing sinuosity by 9.2%, increasing vegetation occupied bar ranged 97% of total bars area. Because such channel morphological changes are closely similar to those in dam downstream channels, we assume that both/either flow regime alteration and/or sediment transport discontinuity may be critical for the fixed channel and spread of vegetated bars even in unregulated river without dam reservoir upstream. We found more reduced frequency and magnitude of flooding water level comparing with past, but no significant alteration of inter annual water level variation. Bed material has been coarsened by 4~5 times and the riverbed has been degraded in overall channel but aggraded locally in conjunction reach of tributaries. The results indicates that reduced sediment dynamics in fluvial channel which derived by bed material coarsening, river bed degradation and unbalanced sediment transport capacity between tributary and mainstem can be a causal factor to trigger channel morphological changes even in unregulated rivers.

KIOST-HYU joint acoustics experiment was performed on the western shallow water off the Taean peninsula in the Yellow Sea in May 2013. In this paper, mid-frequency (6~16 kHz) bottom loss data measured in a grazing angle range of $17{\sim}60^{\circ}$ are presented and compared to the predictions obtained using a Rayleigh reflection model. The sediment structure of the experimental site was characterized by multi-layered sediment and the components of the surficial sediment consisted of various types of particles with a mean grain size of $5.9{\phi}$. The model predictions obtained using the mean grain size were not in agreement with the measured bottom loss, and those obtained using the grain size of $4{\phi}$, which was estimated by an inversion process, showed a best fit to the measurements. It would be because the standard deviation of the gain-size distribution of surficial sediment is $4.3{\phi}$, which is much larger than those of other areas around the experimental site. Finally, the model predictions obtained using the geoacoustic parameters estimated from the inversion process for the surficial sediment layer and those corresponding to the mean grain size of $1.3{\phi}$ for lower layer are reasonably agreement with the measured bottom loss data.
Large amounts of natural gas, mainly methane, in the form of hydrates are stored on continental margins. When gas hydrates are dissociated by any environmental trigger, generation of excess pore pressure due to released free gas may cause sediment deformation and weakening. Hence, damage on offshore structures or submarine landslide can occur by gas hydrate dissociation. Therefore, geotechnical stability of gas hydrate bearing sediments is in need to be securely assessed. However, geotechnical characteristics of gas hydrates bearing sediments including small-strain elastic moduli have been poorly identified. Synthesizing gas hydrate in natural seabed sediment specimen, which is mainly composed of silty-to-clayey soils, has been hardly attempted due to their low permeability. Moreover, it has been known that hydrate loci in pore spaces and heterogeneity of hydrate growth in specimen scale play a critical role in determining physical properties of hydrate bearing sediments. In the presented study, we synthesized gas hydrate containing sediments in an instrumented oedometric cell. Geotechnical and geophysical properties of gas hydrate bearing sediments including compressibility, small-strain elastic moduli, elastic wave, and electrical resistivity are determined by wave-based techniques during loading and unloading processes. Significant changes in volume change, elastic wave, and electrical resistivity have been observed during formation and dissociation of gas hydrate. Experimental results and analyses reveal that geotechnical properties of gas hydrates bearing sediments are highly governed by hydrate saturation, effective stress, void ratio, and soil types as well as morphological feature of hydrate formation in sediments.
Carbon cycling and productivity within Weno Island of Micronesia enclosed by the coral reef may be likely self-maintained and insignificantly affected by the open ocean. Therefore, it is important to understand the role of the mangrove known as providing the organic matter and habitats for many organisms in this enclosed area. In order to trace the nutritional source of fauna (mostly invertebrates) in the mangrove forest of Weno island, we analyzed the fatty acid (FA) and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of potential nutritional sources (mangrove leaf & pneumatophore, seagrass leaf & root, surface sediment, and particulate organic matter (POM) in water) and consumers (4 gastropods and anomura). The mangrove and seagrass contained the abundance of 18:2${\omega}$6, and 18:3${\omega}$3, whereas FAs associated with phytoplankton and bacteria were accounted for a high proportion in the surface sediment and POM. FA composition of consumers was found to be similar to those of the surface sediment, mangrove, and seagrass. These were also confirmed through the mixing model of stable isotope for contribution of nutritional sources to consumers. Overall results with the feeding types of investigated mangrove fauna indicate that investigated mangrove fauna obtained their nutrition from the various sources, i.e. the mangrove for Littorina cf. scabra, the microalgae for Strombus sp., and omnivorous Pagurus sp. and Terebralia cf. palustris. However, it is obvious that the nutrition of most species living in the mangrove ecosystem is highly dependent on the mangrove, either directly or indirectly. More detail food-web structure and function of the mangrove ecosystem would be established with the analysis of additional fauna and flora.
Sound velocities and attenuation coefficients of marine surface sediments were calculated from insitu acoustic experiments on 4 nearshore areas off Pohang, Pusan Yeosu, and Kunsan around the Korean Peninsula. The relationship between these values and physical properties of sediments was examined and attenuation mechanism was analysed using the estimated gas content. Sound velocities and attenuation coefficients ranging from 1470 to 1616 m/sec and 0.0565 to 0.6604 dB/kHz-m, respectively, are well related to sediment types. The attenuation coefficient is maximum in coarse silts, and the sound velocity increases with density. The gas content estimated less than 8 ppm increases with the decreasing sediment grain size. When the sediment size is greater than fine sand, sound attenuation is mostly due to friction losses, and probably negligible viscous loss remains unchanged with the varying physical properties of sediments. The maximum attenuation in coarse silts result from both friction loss and cohesion of finer sediments between the contacts of silt grains. The cohesion begins to be the dominant dissipative process with decreasing grain size from medium and fine silts.
The 3.5 KHz seismic survey was carried out for studying the distribution pattern of the unconsolidated sediments of the Yeosu Sound on the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. Field data originally recorded in analog are converted and processed digitally to recover the high-resolution acoustic profiles. Across the north-south trending channel with the depth of 20~30 m, different seismic facies types are observed in the top section of sediments. The western part is characterized by the continuous high-amplitude subparallel reflectors within which the acoustic turbidity as a token of the presence of gas is commonly observed, whereas the counterpart largely shows poor reflectors and has shallow acoustic basement toward the north. The dissimilarity of the seismic expression across the channel can be interpreted as the result of the change of depositional environment caused by relative sea-level fluctuations of the late-Quaternary. During the last glacial period, the Yeosu Sound was exposed and eroded by the paleo-Seomjin River. By the following rapid rise of sea level, it was covered by the transgressive sand sheet. When the sea level reached near the present position, the muddy sediment has accumulated only in the western part of the Yeosu Sound as its depositional front has moved toward the north. It is partly caused by the asymmetrical tidal current in the Yeosu Sound where the flood near the bottom has stronger current flow and contains more suspended sediments.
The study of characteristics of phosphorus release in Nakdong Estuary Barrage was conducted in June and July, 1989. Batch type reactor was designed for evaluating of release flux. The fractional composition of organic phosphorus and inorganic phosphorus in sediment were $34.7\%,\;66.7\%$, respectively. Inorganic phosphorus was fractionated into three types; Adsorbed-P, Non Apatite Inorganic-P, Apatite-P. The major forms of inorganic phosphorus were Non Apatite Inorganic-P($61.1\%$) and apatite-P($30.0\%$). Release rates of phosphorus from sediment were $-4.4mg/m^2/d$ in aerobic condition, and $39.4mg/m^2/d$ in anaerobic condition. According to the result of this study, sediment plays an important role in Nakdong Estuary Barrage as an internal load source of phosphorus.
