To dissolve the multi-layered model problems, and to complement 2-layered model's simplicity, assumed fluid-fluid-solid 3-layered model. Generally it is known that if the sediment thickness is more than 10 wavelength, the half space's influence to the in-water acoustic field could be disregarded. By tracking the maximum correlation coefficient of calculated results and experimental ones we confirmed that the requirement could be more realized. To calculate the maximum correlation coefficient we used single sensor transmission loss. On the assumption that the sediment sound velocity was 1813 m/s and frequency range 50 kHz to 120 kHz, the conversion condition was from 2.5 to 7.7 wavelength.

This study presents the analysis of flood and bed deformation caused by reservoir failure. The CCHE1D is used to simulate 1D non-uniform, non-equilibrium sediment transport and bed deformation. The CCHE1D deals with the adaptation length for non-equilibrium sediment, classified sediment particle for non-uniform sediment and mixing layer for the exchange with the sediment moving with the flow. The model is applied to Ha!Ha! river basin where was experienced reservoir failure in 1996 to analyze non-uniform and non-equilibrium sediment transport. The calculations are compared with morphological bed changes of pre- and post-flood. In addition, model sensitivity to main parameters involving adaptation length ($L_{s,b}$), non-equilibrium coefficient (${\alpha}_s$), mixing layer thickness (${\delta}_m$) and porosity (p') is analyzed. The results indicates that thalweg change is the most sensitive to non-equilibrium coefficient (${\alpha}_s$) among those parameters in the study area.

Prediction on initial motion of sediment is crucial to evaluate sediment transport and channel stability. The condition of incipient movement of sediment is characterized by bed shear stress, which is generated from force of moving water against the bed of the channel, and by critical shear stress, which depends on force resisting motion of sediment due to the submerged weight of the grains. When the bed shear stress exceeds the critical shear stress, sediment particles begin rolling and sliding at isolated and random locations. In Mountain River, debris flow frequently occurs due to heavy rainfall and can lead some natural stones from mountain slope into the bed river. This phenomenon could add additional forces to sediment transport system in the bed of river and also affect or change direction and magnitude of sediment movement. In this paper, evaluations on incipient motion of uniform coarse gravel under falling spheres impacts using small scale flume channel were conducted. The drag force of falling spheres due to water flow and length movement of falling spheres were investigated. The experiments were carried out in flume channel made by glass wall and steel floor with 12 m long, 0.6 m wide, and 0.6 m deep. The bed slopes were selected with the range from 0.7% to 1.5%. The thickness of granular layer was at least 3 times of diameter of granular particle to meet grain placement condition. The sphere diameters were chosen to be 4cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm. The spheres were fallen in to the bed channel for critical condition and under critical condition of motion particle. Based on the experimental results, the Shields curve of particles Reynold number and dimensionless critical shear stress were plotted. The relationship between with drag force and the length movement of spheres were plotted. The pathways of the bed material Under the impact of spheres falling were analyzed.
For the scientific and systematic study of sediment deposits along Yeongsan river, total 13 core samples were taken from Yeongsan river. The thickness of sediment deposits is 22.0m at YS 1, 20.0m YS 2, 18.5m YS 3, 12.0m YS 4, 3.0m YS 5, 5.5m YS 7, 3.0m YS 8, 5.9m YS 9, 5.0m YS 10 on main stream of Yeongsan river. The thickness of deposit is increasing from upstream to downstream. The composition of sediments dominates sandy gravel on the upstream and the lower part on the downstream, and mud deposits of $11m{\sim}16m$ thick on the upper part of on the downstream(YS 1, YS 2, and YS 3). Contents of organic carbon and calcium carbonates occur being contrary to each other toward upstream. The content of organic carbon increases upstream, that of calcium carbonates decreases. According to size analysis of sediment, the content of gravel increases and mud decreases from downstream to upstream. Sediment deposits can be divided into two types whether gravel is or not. But this boundary is clear in the downstream(YS 1$\sim$YS 4) but is vague in the upstream. The result of this study could be provided engineering, environment, and architecture with geological background as the essential basis.
In order to reveal the vertical variation of physical properties in deep-sea sediments, deep-sea sediment cores were collected at 78 stations using a multiple corer in the KR5 area, one of the Korea contract areas for manganese nodule exploration, located in the northeast equatorial Pacific. Based on the color of sediments, sampled sediment cores were characterized into three lithologic units (unit 1,2, and 3). In all sediment cores, three units appear systematically; unit 1 lies at the top of cores and unit 2 and/or unit 3 appear to underlie unit 1 or alternate with unit 3. Unit 1 layer from the top of cores shows dark grayish brown to dark brown with mean thickness of 10.2cm. Unit 2 and 3 layers show very dark brown to black color and yellowish brown to brown color, respectively. According to the physical properties of the deep-sea sediment cores, sediment column can be divided into three sections. Section A $(0{\sim}15cm)$ in subbottom depth consists mostly of unit 1. Mean values of physical properties of section B $(15{\sim}30cm)$ in subbottom depth are similar to those of section C (>30 cm) in subbottom depth. However, the physical properties of section B were more variable than those of section C because of the high activity of bioturbation in section B. These results will provide valuable information for selecting suitable sites for mining manganese nodules in the Korea contract areas.
A multichannel seismic survey was conducted in the southern Ayu Trough which is the only spreading boundary between the Philippine Sea and Caroline plates. The seismic system used in this study comprises of 2.46-l sleeve gun and a 12-channel streamer with a group interval of 6.25m. Migration technique was used to analyze seismic velocity, and poststack depth migration was applied to the stacked data. The sediment thickness obtained from the depth section tends to increase with distance from the spreading axis. Sedimentation rates are poorly constrainted in the study area. The apparent half-spreading rates estimated from the sediment thickness and sedimentation rate from DSDP hole on the caroline plate are 4.7mm/yr and 7.9mm/yr at $1^{\circ}24'N\;and\;0^{\circ}42'N$, respectively, which are fester than Previously suggested. On the basis of new oblique spreading geometry, the recalculated spreading rates are 5.4mm/yr and 9.1mm/yr at $1^{\circ}24'N\;and\;0^{\circ}42'N$, respectively. Seismic sections show that the topography is asymmetric across the Ayu Trough and the acoustic basement is rough. These features are consistent with the earlier suggestion that the Ayu Trough is a slow-spreading divergent boundary. A detailed examination of seismic profiles away from the axis shows that sediments can be divided into two layers which implies a possible change in the spreading rate anuor sedimentation condition during the formation of the trough.
Chogye basin, which is surrounded by country rock, has a closed-basin form. In such a basin, incident seismic energy can form multiply reflected waves, thus causing energy concentration to occur at this closed-basin area. Microtremor measurement survey was performed at the Chogye basin, which is located in Chogye-myeon and Jeokjungmyeon, Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Republic of Korea. Microtremor data were transformed into the frequency domain, and then the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios (HVSR) were calculated. Fundamental resonance frequencies were estimated from the HVSR results for every observation point. Using the empirical relationship between site period and thickness for sediment sites in Korea known from the previous study, the distribution of sediment thickness of the Chogye basin was estimated from the fundamental resonance frequencies. Being compared with the mountainous rim with steep slope, the measurement points inside the basin have low values of the fundamental resonance frequency with the minimum of 1.03 Hz, which corresponds to the thickness of sedimentary layer with the maximum depth of about 100 m. A three-dimensional basin model was constructed for bedrock topography of the Chogye basin by an interpolation of basin depths estimated at each measurement site.

The change of surface sediment composition, shoreline and transection of geography were studied to investigate the Typhoon(Maemi) effect in Naa Beach located in the south area of East sea. In the backshore the volume of gravel is do creased, and increased in the volume of sand. The erosion in the sediment occurred to 4 m in the thickness and effected to 10 m in depth. And the coastline retreated to 12 m after typhoon. During typhoon conditions, higher amplitude waves deepen the wave base, causing much of the lower beach face and the offshore. The upper beach face is extensively eroded during typhoon and sand sediment is redeposited.
MultiSensor Core Logger (MSCL) is a useful system for logging the physical properties (compressional wave velocity, wet bulk density, fractional porosity, magnetic susceptibility and/or natural gamma radiation) of marine sediments through scanning of whole cores in a nondestructive fashion. But MSCL has a number of problems that can lead to spurious results depending on the various factors such as core slumping, gas expansion, mechanical stretching, and the thickness variation of core liner and sediment. For the verification of MSCL data, compressional wave velocity, wet bulk density, and porosity were measured on discrete samples by Hamilton Frame and Gravimetric method, respectively. Acoustic impedance was also calculated. Physical property data (velocity, wet bulk density, and impedance) logged by MSCL were slightly larger than those of discrete sample, and porosity is reverse. Average difference between MSCL and discrete sample at both sites is relatively small such as 2224 m/s in velocity, $0.02-0.08\;g/\textrm{cm}^3$ in wet bulk density, and 2.52.7% in porosity. The values also show systematic variation with sediment depth. A variety of factors are probably responsible for the differences including instrument error, various measurement method, sediment disturbance, and accuracy of calibration. Therefore, MSCL can be effectively used to collect physical property data with high resolution and quality, if the calibration is accurately completed.
To investigate the effects of hydromechanical and textural characteristics of sediment deposits on the cultivation of Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum surface and sub-surface core sediments were collected seasonally in Gomso tidal flat. Grain size distribution were analyzed to investigate the annual variation of sediment texture. In winter unimodal distribution of grain size with the peak at $5\phi$ is dominant However, during the summer sediment texture become a little bit coarser and grain size distribution shows the peaks at $4\~5 \phi$. Optimum sediment texture for the cultivation of manila clam, R. philippinarum was found to be sandy silt in which mean Brain size was between 4 and $5 \phi$ with the sand content less than $50\%$ and clay content of $5\~10\%$. Mechanical and hydrological characteristics of sediment deposits were also studied in the laboratory and the results were applied to the numerical simulation for the behavior of surface sediment subjected to the cyclic loading from sea-water level change. Results of numerical simulation illustrate that the permeability of sediment had to be maintained in the range of $10^{-11}\sim10^{-12}m^2$ to ensure the proper sedimentological environment for the cultivation of manila clam, R. philippinarum. The deposits of virtually impermeable mud layer, with the threshold thickness of 4 cm, would be very hazardous to clam habitat.
