  • This study focused an water quality response to land-based pollution loads and the appropriate pollutant load reduction in Chinhae Bay using an eco-hydrodynamic model. Land-based discharge foam urban areas, industrial complex and sewage treatment plant was the greatest contributor to cause red-tide blooms and summer hypoxia. Tidal currents velocity af the ebb tide was about 10 cm/s stronger than that of the flood tide. A residual current was simulated to. have a slightly complicated pattern with ranging from 0.1 to. 2.7 cm/s. In Masan Bay, pollutant materials cannot flaw from the inner to the outer bay easily because af residual currents flaw southward at surface and northward at the bottom. The simulation results of COD distribution showedhigh concentrations aver 3 mg/L in the inner part of Masan Bay related pollutant discharge, and charge, and lower levels less than 1.5mg/L in the central part of Chinhae Bay. For improvement water quality in Chinhae Bay, it is necessary to reduce the organic and inorganic loads from paint sources by mare than 50% and ameliorate severe polluted sediment.

  • Since the self-purification capacity of rivers in Korea is significantly controlled by environmental maintenance flow supplied by upstream reservoirs during drought season, it is obviously important to operate the river and reservoir systems considering not only water quantity aspect but also conservation of downstream water quality and ecosystem. In this study, an unsteady river water quality model KORIVl- WIN was developed as a tool for evaluating the impact. of reservoir operations on the downstream water quality. The model parameters were calibrated and verified using field data obtained in Geum River on September and October of 2002, respectively. Intensive data sampling was performed on November 22, 2003 to investigate the effect of a short-term flushing discharge of Daecheong Reservoir, which increased outflow from 30 $m^3$/s to 200 $m^3$/s for 6 hours, on downstream water quality. The model performance was evaluated by comparing simulated results with observed data including hydraulics, biochemical oxygen demand(BOD$_{5}$), nitrogen and phosphorus species during the flushing event. It showed very good performance in predicting the travel time of flushing flow and water quality variations of dissolved forms of nitrogen and phosphorus species, while revealed large deviations for BOD$_{5}$ possibly due to missing the effect of organic matters resuspension from river bottom sediment during the wave front passage.

  • In this study, we estimated the seasonal fluctuations of water quality and effect of small tide embankment in coastal water around the Muan Peninsula, which is located in the northern part of Mokpo city, and layer farming ground is spread around there. Some physical and chemical factors were analyzed to characterize water quality from Jan. to Oct. in 1994. The results were as follows: Dissolved oxygen was slightly under saturation in the almost areas of July, and in some bottom layer at ebb tide of October. Distribution of COD showed high values that over 2㎎/L in October and flood tide of April by the discharge of freshwater and resuspension of benthic sediment, which exceeded water quality criteria II. Maximum values of dissolved inorganic nitrogen ware appeared in surface layer during the flood tide of October, while minimum of that showed in surface layer in April. Concentration of dissolved inorganic phosphorus was higher at July than the others, which ranged from 0.24 to 2.08㎍-at/L. Mostly mean values of N/P ratio were lower than 16, it mean that nitrogen is more limiting nutrient than phosphorus for the growth of phytoplankton. The values of eutrophication index were in the range of 0.07~0.81. However, very high values due to increase of COD were estimated near the tide embankment and southern part in relation to tidal current in October. Water quality around tide embankment was suddenly changed worse within a short period after opening the water gate during the rainfall.

  • In order to figure out hydrodynamic and water quality changes after completion of dike construction of the Saemangeum, which behaves as a semi-enclosed estuarine lake, numerical simulations based on fine grid structure by using EFDC were intensively carried out. In this study some limitations of precedent study has been improved and gate operation were considered. Also 3 phases such as air-water-sediment interaction modeling was considered. It is clear that inner mixing of the Saemangeum is dominated by Mankyeong and Dongjin riverine discharges rather than the gate opening influence through the Lagrangian particle tracking simulations. Vertical DO structure after the dike completion shows steep gradient especially at Dongjin river estuary due to lessen of outer sea water exchange. Increasing SOD at stagnantly changed man-made reservoir might cause oxygen deficiency and accelerating degradation of water quality. According to TSI evaluation test representing eutrophication status, it shows high possibility of eutrophication along Mankyeong waterway in spite of dike completion, while the index is getting high after final closing along Dongjin waterway. Numerical tests with gate operations show significant differences in water quality. Thus it should be noted that proper gate operation plays a major role in preserving target water quality and management for inner development plan.

  • SWAT is semi-distributed and continuous-time distributed simulation watershed model, which can simulate point and nonpoint source pollutants as well as hydrology and water quality. It was developed to predict the effects of alternative management decisions on water, sediment, and chemical yields with reasonable accuracy. It is able to predict and manage hydrology, sediments, nutrients, and pesticides with Best Management Practices (BMPs) in a watershed. SWAT model also has potential for use in ungauged basins to predict streamflow and baseflow from saturated source area in watersheds. According to various cultivation practices and climate change, SWAT model is available to analyze relative change in hydrology and water quality. In order to establish optimum management of water quality, both monitering and modeling have been conducted actively using SWAT model. As SWAT model is computer program to simulate a lot of natural phenomena, it has limitation to predict and reflect them with on hundred percent accuracy. Thus, it is possible to analyze the effect of BMPs in the watershed where users want to simulate hydrology and water quality only if model accuracy and applicability are assessed first of all and the result of it is well for the study watershed. For assessment of SWAT applicability, most researchers have used $R^2$ and Nash and Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE). $R^2$ and NSE are likely to show different results according to a warm up period and sometimes its results are very different. There have been hardly any studies of whether warm up period can affect simulation results in SWAT model. In this study, how warm up period has a effect on SWAT results was analyzed and a appropriate warm up period was suggested. Lots of SWAT results were compared after using measured data of Soyanggang-dam watershed and applying various warm up period (0 ~ 10 year(s)). As a result of this study, when there was no warm up period, $R^2$ and NSE were 0.645, 0.602 respectively, when warm up period was 2 years, $R^2$ and NSE were 0.648, 0.632, and when warm up period was 4 years, $R^2$ and NSE were 0.663, 0.652 separately. Through this study, sensitive analysis of warm up period in SWAT model was conducted, and this study could give a guideline able to simulate hydrology and water quality for more accuracy than before as users change a lot of warm up periods as well as any simulation parameters.

  • Water quality of Masan-Jinhae Bay was monitored from January 1996 to August 1997. The monitoring focused on the spatial and vertical gradients and seasonal changes of eutrophication parameters such as nutrients, DO and water transparency. Flagellate phytoplanktons persistently bloomed from April to October with monospecific or mixed algal blooms and dynamic algal successions were observed in this area. Algal blooms were highly correlated with salinity drops and made the water less transparent. Stratification of oxygen content was persistent through summer and oligo-oxygenation was developed in the bottom waters. Nutrient gradients were consistently maintained through the depth in summer and through spatial distribution from inner Masan Bay to outer Jinhae Bay in winter. Except the rainfall seasons, water quality was under the influence of the waste waters discharged from watershed around the Masan Bay. The waste waters would act as the primary factor for the water quality deterioration of the bay. Literature data for eutrophication were gathered and analyzed to review the water quality trends of the Masan and Jinhae bays since 1970. Annual mean COD and phosphate concentration consistently increased from 1975 to 1990 and decreased or dropped after 1991. The sediment of inner part of Masan Bay was dredged from 1991 to 1994 as a decontamination process and it is assumed that the dredging has weakened more or less the deterioration trend of the water quality of the bay.

  • Nutrient over-enrichment as a consequence of anthropogenic loading leads to eutrophication, which has the detrimental effects on river and stream ecosystems. To examine dynamics of factors causing cultural eutrophication in a over-licked mountain stream due to anthropogenic loading, physicochemical parameters were measured from 5 stations in the upper Daecheon stream, Busan, from January 2002 to May 2003. The five study sites were located along the stream gradient. DC1 is upper most clean site, and DC5 is located at the lowest area. Wastewater was released into the stream from just upstream of DC2 site. Water column ammonium and phosphate concentrations were higher during winter than other seasons, while water column nitrate +nitrite concentration did not show clear seasonal variation. Water column ammonium, nitrate+nitrite and phosphate concentrations were lowest at DC1 and highest at DC2 in which waste water loading occurred. TOC and DOC, conductivity, turbidity, and BOD in the water column were also increased drastically at DC2, and then decreased at DC5. Sediment pore water phosphate concentrations during winter and spring were higher than those in summer and fall, while sediment pore water ammonium and nitrate +nitrite concentrations showed no seasonal trend. Sediment pore water ammonium and phosphate concentration were also increased at DC2 and slightly decreased at DC5, while sediment pore water nitrate+nitrite concentration was highest at DC5. Organic matter and inorganic nutrients at up-stream of Daechon stream significantly increased as a result of wastewater discharge, and the nutrient concentrations decreased at low-stream suggesting self-purification ability of the stream.

  • Goseong bay, located in southeast sea of Korea with an area of 2,100 ha, is a semi-enclosed bay well-known for oyster farming cultured in an extended range of 148 ha. The objective of this study is to provide the fundamental data in order to manage the effective sea area. A total 26 of surface sediment were collected from Goseong bay to evaluate their sedimentary environment and heavy metals. The loss on Ignition (LOI), C/N ratio, acid volatile sulfide (AVS) and heavy metals were analyzed. loss on ignition (LOI) of surface sediment range from 1.00% to 3.03% (average 2.00%). The carbonate content ranges from 0.52% to 4.29% (average 2.37%). C/N ratio of organic matter showed that most part of organic matter comes from neighboring continent. Acid volatile sulfide (AVS) value of surface sediment from 0.02 mg/g to 1.43 mg/g (average 0.24 mg/g). A ten element of surface sediments (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V, Zn) were calculated by enrichment factor (Ef) and the results show that some areas are highly polluted with respect Cu and Hg. The correlation matrix displays the existence of remarkable levels of correlation with both positive and negative values among different variable pairs. LOI and AVS showed both positive values. LOI and AVS values falls under 2% and 1%. Therefore, Goseong bay showed good in quality of sediment.

  • To understand eutrophication in the upper regions of brackish Lake Sihwa with a limited water exchange, temporal and spatial distributions of pollutants in water and sediment were investigated from March to October in 2005 and 2006. Also, pollution levels of water and sediment were estimated by trophic state index (TSI) and sediment quality guideline (SQG). Total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), organic matter (COD), and chlorophyll $\alpha$ (Chl-$\alpha$) concentrations in the surface waters were largely varied temporally and spatially, and the variations were highest in the middle areas where strong halocline was formed. Chl-$\alpha$ concentrations in the middle area were very high in April (>$900\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) when algal blooms (red tides) occurred. The relationships between TN and Chl-$\alpha$ (r=0.31), and TP and Chl-$\alpha$ (r=0.65) indicated that the algal growth was primarily affected by phosphorus rather than nitrogen. The distribution of COD was similar to that of Chl-$\alpha$, indicating that the autochthonous organic matters may be a more important carbon source, especially in the middle areas. The brackish water regions were classified as eutrophic or hypertrophic based on their TSI values ($69{\sim}76$). In addition, the content of nutrients (especially TP) in surface sediments were classified as severe polluted state, except the upper areas. Major causes of the eutrophication observed were probably due to high nutrients loading from watersheds, the phosphorus release from anaerobic sediment, and long retention time by the limited water exchange through the sluice gates.

  • There are various transversal structures (small dams or drop structures) in median and small streams in Korea. Most of them are concrete structures and it is so hard to exclude low-level water. Unless drainage valves and/or gates would not be installed near bottom of bed, sediment from upstream should be deposited and also contaminants attached to the sediments would devastatingly threaten the water quality and ecosystem. One of countermeasures for such problem is the bypass pipe installed underneath the transversal structure. However, there is still issued whether it would be workable if the gravels and/or stones would roll into and be not excluded. Therefore, in this study, the conditions to exclude the rip stone which enter into the bypass pipe was reviewed. Based on sediment transport phenomenon, the behavior of stones was investigated with the concepts from the critical shear stress of sediment and d'Alembert principle. As final results, the basis condition (${\tau}_c{^*}$) was derived using the Lagrangian description since the stones are in the moving state, not in the stationary state. From hydraulic experiments the relative velocity could be obtained. In order to minimize the scale effect, the extra wide channel of 5.0 m wide and 1.0 m high was constructed and the experimental stones were fully spherical ones. Experimental results showed that the ratio of flow velocity to spherical particle velocity was measured between 0.5 and 0.7, and this result was substituted into the suggested equation to identify the critical condition wether the stones were excluded. Regimes about the exclusion of stone in bypass pipe were divided into three types according to particle Reynolds number ($Re_p$) and dimensionless critical shear force (${\tau}_c{^*}$) - exclusion section, probabilistic exclusion section, no exclusion section. Results from this study would be useful and essential information for bypass pipe design in transveral structures.
