Soil Characteristics on the Fluvial Surface in the Basin of Kyeongan-cheon (Stream) (경안천 유역 하성면에 발달한 토양 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the relict landform development of fluvial terrace and the soil characteristics occurring on the fluvial deposits. The physico-chemical properties of soil that are developed on terrace deposits and X-ray diffraction analysis of clay were investigated specifically. The horizon of $A_1$ consists of silt loam with reddish-brown color (5YR4/3). Its soil structures is a weak, fine, subangular, and blocky, breaking to granular. The horizon of $B_{1t}\;and\;B_{2t}$ are silt clay with either a yellowish red (5YR5/6), bright red (2.5YR4/6) color. This soil structure is weak, subangular, and blocky, with thin discontinuous bright red (2.5YR4/6) clay cutans and soft manganese concretions. This red soil structure is made on heavy-textures. It is packed compactly with parent materials of high fluvial surface sediments, and usually has a $A_1-B_{1t}-B_{2t}-C$ profile, from top to bottom. In most cases, clay accumulation in the B-horizon and clay cutans on ped surfaces are observed, which means the argillic horizon has formed. The soils derived from fluvial surface deposits are associated with soils. The soils on the high fluvial surface are considered to be a kind of paleo-red soil which were developed by strong desilicification and rubefaction, and strong leaching of bases under warmer bio-climatic condition during the old Pleistocene period. According to these morphological and anlaytical characteristics,geomorphological features and bio-climatic conditions under which the soil have developed on the high terrace sediment indicate that the soil should be classified as paleo-red soils.

Permeability Characteristics of Soft Clay using the Piezocone Test and a Laboratory Test (피에조 콘 시험과 실내시험을 이용한 점토지반의 투수특성 연구)

  • The consolidation behavior of soft clay is controlled mainly by its compressibility and deformation characteristics. Soil permeability depends on various soil characteristics, including the soil type and anisotropy. The coefficient of permeability of soft clay is determined by using a laboratory test (the Oedometer test) or a piezocone test. The latter test is useful for estimating the permeability characteristics from $c_h$ and $k_h$ by performing an excess pore-pressure dissipation test. This study seeks to validate an existing theoretical formula in applying it to marine clay, and to assess the relation between $k_h/k_c$ and the mechanical properties of soft clay. Piezocone tests and laboratory tests were performed using sediment from the Yellow Sea and from the South Sea near Korea. We compared $k_h/k_v$ values obtained using the piezocone test and using laboratory consolidation tests. The obtained values are similar to the values obtained by Jamiolkowski et al. (M application); therefore, the latter values are recommended to be used as $k_h/k_v$.

  • A sediments are Integral called as gravel, sand, clay, mineral materials which are settling in bottom layer of reservoir, stream, and oceans from land. In practical problems relations of sediments are flood by decreed of flow capacity and down of water quality. Dredged sediments are composed with constructed material and variety of pollutant compounds. Therefore, it is very much of cost effects in nationally, if development for use of constructed material separated only constructed material within sediments. And it will be continue to the dredge operation of stream sediment for retrofit of water environment and sustainable's after the years. The following results could be obtained : In case of high concentration sediments, sample for design of CDF was shown property of flocculent settling. Assuming that average inflow rate is 1, 000㎥/hr, mean residence time( $T_{d}$), average ponding depth( $H_{pd}$ ), and design surface area for flocculent settling( $A_{df}$ ) were 5 hr, 0.6m, and 15, 750 $m^2$ respectivelyrespectivelyy

Prediction of Sorption/Desorption Parameters of Halogenated Aliphatic Compounds Using QSAR (QSAR을 이용한 지방족 할로겐화합물 흡착 및 탈착 계수의 예측)

  • Sorption and desorption is an important phenomenon to determine the fate of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons in the aqueous phase. This study was conducted to develope a predictive equation capable of estimating the sorption and desorption potentials of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons onto the sludge from activated process, sediment, and clay. It has shown that the sorption and desorption parameters can be accurately estimated using Quantitative Structural Activity Relationship(QSAR) models based on molecular connectivity indexes of test compounds. The QSAR model could be applied to predict the sorption and desorption capacity of the other halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons. The QSAR modeling would provide a useful tool to predict the sorption and desorption capacity without time-consuming experiments.

Mineralogical Characteristics of Marine Sediments Cores from Uleung Basin and Hupo Basin, East Sea (동해 울릉분지와 후포분지 해양 퇴적물 코어의 광물학적 특성)

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the mineralogical characteristics of the core sediments (03GHP-02 and HB13-2), obtained from the Ulleung Basin and Hupo Basin, Korea. The results on mineral compositions, clay mineral compositions, and the total contents and sequential extraction of different fractions of the phosphorus in core samples showed that those values are different in two cores and also at different depths. In both samples, mineral compositions were the same, composed mainly of quartz, microcline, albite, calcite, opal A, pyrite, and clay minerals (illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite). However, the sample from Hupo Basin contains more opal A. Both samples, especially the ones from Hupo Basin contains more smectite than those reported from East Sea, indicating the influence of paleo-Hwangwei River and the Tertiary Formation of Korea Peninsula. For the samples from Uleung Basin, at 0.7-3.5 m range in depth, the low content of opal A and the low illite crystallinity index can be inferred to indicate the relatively cool climate, corresponding to the ice age. Also, the content of total phosphorus was low in those samples. It was reported that East Sea at that time was isolated from the neighboring seas due to the decrease of the sea level, and as a result, the influx of sediments was supposed to be little through the strait and rivers. For the samples from Hupo Basin, there is no significant changes in clay mineral composition and the distribution of phosphorus with increasing depth. This little change can be interpreted to indicate that the sediments comprising the core might be deposited in a relatively short period of time or deposited in sedimentary environment in which there's no significant changes in sediment supplies. The values of crystallinity index of clay minerals are high in those samples, indicating that it was relatively warm during that time. Although the increase of fluctuation pattern can be observed, showing that the climate of this period often changed, it is supposed that it was generally warm.

A Study on the sedimentological Environments in KODOS91-1 Area, Northeast Pacific (북동 태평양 KODOS91-1지역퇴적환경 연구)

  • The sediment collected from KODOS91-1 were studied using X-ray diffraction(SRD) analysis to clarify the composition and vertical distribution of clay minerals. Micropaleontological data(Radiolarians) was applied to identify the changes in post-depositional environment and chemical mechanism leading to the formation of authigenic minerals. The result show that the highest concentration of smectite is occurred in the lower part(Unit II, III) of sediment column and the lowest concentration in the upper part(Unit I) whereas terrestrial minerals, such as illite, kaolinite and quartz, indicate the opposite trends. Radiolarians in the upper part are composed entirely of Quaternary/Tertiary mixtures, whereas in lower sediment units generally revealed the middle Miocene to the Eocene. This may imply that the Quaternary and Tertiary sedimentary processes were continuously affected by reworking of older sediments and subsequent resegmentation. The changes of the sediment color, peak pattern of minerals and presence of reworked microfossils at the unit boundaries have been interpreted as evidence of authigenic formation. Mineralogical characteristics of the sediments in study area strongly indicates changes in paleoenvironments through geologic time, including changes in post-depositional conditions by physical processes and chemical mechanisms.

Review on the Korean Terms of Sediment Grain Size Demonstrated in the Textbooks (교과서에서 사용하는 퇴적물의 입도에 대한 한국어 용어의 검토)

  • The Korean terms of sediment grain size demonstrated in the 30 textbooks of elementary, middle, and high schools and university levels are compared and reviewed, and the problems of its use and alternative terms are proposed. The Korean terms of sediment grain size shown in the most textbooks are the translated terms of the Udden-Wentworth grade scale, and the different terms have been used in these textbooks. In the case of gravels, granule, cobble, and boulder have commonly been translated as wangmorae (king sand), janjagal (fine gravel), wangjagal (king gravel), and pyoryeog (drift gravel) or georyeog (large gravel), respectively. However, it is regarded to be reasonable that they are termed as janjagal, jungjagal (medium gravel), keunjagal (large gravel), and wangjagal, respectively. Adjectives such as 'maeu goun' (very fine), 'goun' (fine), 'junggan' (medium), 'gulgeun' (coarse), and 'maeu gulgeun' (very coarse), attached with each sediment name seem to be suitable to terms for sediments smaller than gravels. Silt has been commonly termed as misa (fine sand) in many textbooks, but it may be appropriate that silt is expressed as silt. Finally, mud, which is a mixture of silt and clay, should be named ito (mud) as shown in several textbooks including Dictionary of Korean Earth Science, though mud has been frequently termed as jinheug (slush or watery soil) in the most of textbooks for elementary and middle school students, and some high school and university textbooks.

Sedimentary Facies and Environmental Changes of the Nakdong River Estuary and Adjacent Coastal Area (낙동강 하구와 주변 연안역의 표층 퇴적상 및 퇴적환경 변화)

  • To investigate sedimentary facies and environmental changes of the Nakdong River Estuary and its adjacent coastal area, the grain size analysis and measurement of organic matter, calcium carbonate, clay mineral and metallic elements were carried out for forty surface sediment samples. Based on regional distribution pattern and characteristics of the surface sediments, sedimentary facies in the study area can be divided into sand facies (TYPE I), mud facies (TYPE II) and sand-mud mixed facies (TYPE III). TYPE III is the transition of TYPE I and TYPE II in every aspects of sediment characteristics. It suggests that TYPE III may have been formed by the mixture of two different source of sediment : one derived from Nakdong River and the other resuspended fine-grained sediments from the Jinhae Bay by winnowing action during floods or storms. Among many aspects of environmental change after the construction of the Nakdong Barrage, the most significant is the increase of sand content off the sand barrier region. It could be explained by several reasons including decreased input of fine-grained sediment from river, increased hydrodynamic energy level off the sand barrier region and artificial effects such as dredging and dumping.

Surface Sediments Classification in Tidal Flats using Multivariate Kriging and KOMPSAT-2 Imagery (다변량 크리깅과 KOMPSAT-2 영상을 이용한 간석지 표층 퇴적물 분류)

  • The objective of this paper is to propose a methodology for surface sediments classification in tidal flats that can combine ground survey data with high-resolution remote sensing data by multivariate kriging. Unlike conventional methodologies that have classified remote sensing data by using pre-classified sediment components, a new classification methodology presented in this paper first generates sediment component fraction maps and then classifies the sediments on a final stage. For generating sediment component fractions, regression kriging, as one of multivariate kriging algorithms, is applied to integrate ground survey data and remote sensing data. First, trend components of sand, silt, and clay are derived through regression analysis of ground survey data and spectral information from remote sensing data. Then, residuals at sample locations are computed and interpolated to generate residual components in the study area. Finally, the sediment component fractions are computed by adding the residuals to the trend components and are classified on a final stage. A case study at the Baramarae tidal flats with KOMPSAT-2 imagery is carried out to evaluate the classification capability of the proposed classification methodology. Through the case study, the proposed methodology showed the best classification accuracy, compared with the conventional classification methodologies. Especially, much improvement of classification accuracy for fine-grained sediments were also obtained. Therefore, it is expected that the presented classification methodology would be an effective one for surface sediments classification in tidal flats.

Depth-dependent Variations in Elemental and Mineral Distribution in the Deep Oceanic Floor Sediments (WP21GPC04) near the Mariana Trench in the Western Pacific Ocean (마리아나 해구에 인접한 서태평양 심해평원의 정점 WP21GPC04에서 수집된 해양 퇴적물의 깊이에 따른 원소 및 광물 분포 변화)

  • This study reports depth-dependent elemental distribution and mineral abundance of the oceanic sediment sample (WP21GPC04) near the Mariana Trench collected during the WP21 expedition in 2021. The elemental distribution determined by μ-XRF shows no significant differences with varying depth, with an average SiO2 53.91 wt%, FeO 4.48 wt%, Al2O3 16.56 wt%, MgO 2.56 wt%, CaO 4.79 wt%, Na2O 3.52 wt%, K2O 5.48 wt%, similar to the average chemical composition of global subducting sediments (GLOSS). The mineral abundances analyzed using synchrotron XRD, however, vary with depth. While quartz, mica, and plagioclase were identified at all depths, chlorite was found at shallow depths, and zeolite group minerals, phillipsite and heulandite, showed a gradual change in phase fraction with depth. This suggests a change in sedimentation and alteration environments in the region, or the potential for coexistence emerges due to similar sediment stability. Overall, this study will provide a basis for the future investigations on the evolution of sedimentary environment near the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean and the phase distribution and the behavior of subducting oceanic sediments, which will affect the lithological and geochemical characteristics of the Mariana susduction system.
