The increasing demands of lifting lugs can be attributed to the rapid advancement of shipbuilding and offshore-structure production technologies and an exponential increase in the size of the block units of ship structures. Therefore, to ensure safety during the transportation and turnover of large blocks, it is important to determine the structural integrity and position of lifting lugs. However, because the manufacturing cost and availability of lugs are important considerations, low cost and easily obtainable steel compositions of grades different from those of the blocks are often used as alternatives. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a lifting-lug metal on the physical properties of a base metal in a dissimilar welding between the base metal and lifting lug. The effect was evaluated by observing the metal microstructures and determining the hardness and dilution values on the cross-sectional surface of the lifting lug. According to the results of the metal microstructures, impact, hardness, and emission spectrochemical analysis at the surface from where the lug was removed confirmed that the chemical composition of the lifting-lug metal did not influence the physical properties of the base metal.
With the advent of CLSM in the end of 1980s, it has been applied to the field of pulp and paper science in various ways. This study showed the potentials of CLSM In analyzing a change of pulp fiber and paper properties before and after mechanical treatment. In particular, a quantification of internal fibrillation has been done using cross-sectional images of fibers and image analysis technique, then evaluated the effects of fiber wall delamination on fiber and paper properties. It showed that the delaminated fibers were closely associated to development of the interfiber bonding in a fiber network. The CLSM made it possible to investigate a density profile along the sheet thickness, which was created by some papermaking processes like pressing, drying and calendering. Through the attempt to observe the forming procedure of a fiber network during handsheet making, the CLSM images showed that the pressing stage was considered greatly to contribute to generation of interfiber bonding with removing a free water and partly a bound water between fibers. In addition, the CLSM could be used to illustrate not only a surface profile of paper showing the extent of smoothness or roughness, but also a density profile in a B-direction of the network. Finally it became evident that the CLSM could be used as an excellent tool to predict development in fiber and paper properties before and after mechanical treatment during papermaking processes.
In the roll forming process, a sheet or strip of metal is continuously and progressively formed into a desired cross-sectional profile by feeding it through a series of forming roll. Accordingly, it is important to maintain the material properties of the initial sheet and deform uniformly during the roll forming. The roll forming process was estimated in consideration of some factors such as material properties, strip thickness, roll diameter, roll velocity, and the deformation of the material that influence the forming length. The hydroforming technology has been recognized as a new technique in manufacturing industry, especially in automotive industry. The formed pipe in used in hydroforming process is manufactured by the roll forming. The formability during hydroforming is very sensitive to the state of pipes which are made by roll forming. Particularly the amount of hardening during roll forming affects the formability. Therefore, it is necessary to design the optimum roll flower to reduce the local hardening. In this paper, optimum roll flower which has uniform strain distribution through sheet width was obtained by comparing strain distribution in various roll flower. Finite element analysis(FEA) is performed to estimate the strain distribution related to hardening by roll forming. A numerical analysis is carried out by SHAPE-RF.
In this study, a series of numerical analysis has been accomplished on the thermal performance and sectional efficiency of a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger (U-loop) in a geothermal heat pump system (GHP) considering the circulating fluid, pipe, grout and soil formation. A finite element analysis program, ABAQUS, was employed to evaluate the temperature distribution on the cross section of the U-loop system involving HDPE pipe/grout/formation and to compare sectional efficiency between the conventional U-loop and a new latticed HDPE pipe system. Especially, the latticed pipe is equipped with a thermal insulation zone in order to reduce thermal interference between the inflow pipe and the outflow pipe. Also, a thermal stress analysis was performed with the aid of ABAQUS. 3-D finite volume analysis program, FLUENT, was adapted to analyze a coupled system between fluid circulation in the pipe and heat transfer and simulate an operating process of the closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger. In this analysis, the effect of the thermal properties of grout, rate of circulation pump, distance between the inflow pipe and the outflow pipe, and the effectiveness of the latticed HDPE pipe system are taken into account.
To predict thermal stress independent of uncertain material properties of early age concrete, such as elastic modulus and creep, thermal stress device is used. In order to verify the application of various degree of constraint in the thermal stress device, a series of experiments were performed on mass concrete followed by numerical simulation. The application of various degrees of constraint can be achieved by using constraint frame material with different thermal expansion coefficient, length, and cross sectional area. Temperature development in the real structure has been simulated using temperature and humidity control chamber. The results from experiments and numerical analysis show that the thermal stresses estimated from simulation agree well with the general stress variations in the real structure even though the properties of concrete are uncertain.
The dependence of NiSi properties such as sheet resistance and cross-sectional profile on the dopants was characterized. There was little difference of sheet resistance between various dopants such as As, p, BF2 and B just after R'n formation of NiSi. However, the NiSi properties showed strong dependence on the dopants when thermal treatment was applied after RTf formation. BFa .implanted silicon was the best stable property while As implanted one was the worst. The main reason of the excellence property of BF2 sample is believed to be the retardation of Ni diffusion by the F. Therefore, retardation of Ni diffusion is very desirable fur high performance NiSi technology.
The paper proposes a methodology of identifying a substructure model of an existing structure when correct sectional and material properties of the structure are not known. A substructure model is identified by estimating boundary spring constants and stiffness properties of the substructure. Both of static and modal system identification methods have been applied using responses measured at limited locations within the substructure. In defining a substructure model it is required that computed structural responses be consistent with the actual behavior of the part of the structure. Simulation studies on a continuous beam structure and an application to an actual bridge have been carried with static and modal responses. The results and associated problems are discussed in the paper
The impact abrasion behavior of high manganese steel is investigated under three kinds of impact energy in acid hematite ore slurry by using a modified MLD-10 impact abrasion tester. Through the SEM observation of the worn surface and the optical metallographic analysis of the cross-sectional samples, the corrosive impact abrasion mechanisms of the steel under different impact energies are studied. In acid-hematite slurry, the variations of impact energies would result in synchronous transformation of the impact abrasion properties and mechanisms of the high manganese steel in the corrosive condition, as led different corrosive impact abrasion mechanism under different impact energies.
An elastic cable with piecewise constant properties under the action of concentrated static loads is studied analytically. Analytic solutions for catenary cables are combined at the discontinuous points caused by the discontinuous elastic properties or concentrated loads. The application of the boundary conditions at both ends of the multi-component cable results in three algebraic non-linear equations for three unknown parameters, which are determined numerically. The solutions for the shape, tension, elongation, and cross-sectional contraction of the cable are expressed in closed forms. Some examples are given for cases of two- and three-dimensional loads.

In this study, the effect of steel fiber utilization, boundary conditions, different beam cross-section, and length parameter are investigated on the free vibration behavior of fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete beam on elastic foundation. In the analysis of the beam model recommended by Euler-Bernoulli, a method utilizing Stokes transformations and Fourier Sine series were used. For this purpose, in addition to the control beam containing no fiber, three SCC beam elements were prepared by utilization of steel fiber as 0.6% by volume. The time-dependent fresh properties and some mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete mixtures were investigated. In the modelled beam, four different beam specimens produced with 0.6% by volume of steel fiber reinforced and pure (containing no fiber) SCC were analyzed depending on different boundary conditions, different beam cross-sections, and lengths. For this aim, the effect of elasticity of the foundation, cross-sectional dimensions, beam length, boundary conditions, and steel fiber on natural frequency and frequency parameters were investigated. As a result, it was observed that there is a noticeable effect of fiber reinforcement on the dynamic behavior of the modelled beam.
