  • A 110 mm diameter aspheric metal secondary mirror for a test model of an earth observation satellite camera was fabricated by ultra-precision single point diamond turning (SPDT). Aluminum alloy for mirror substrates is known to be easily machinable, but not polishable due to its ductility. A harder material, Ni, is usually electrolessly coated on an Al substrate to increase the surface hardness for optical polishing. Aspheric metal secondary mirror without a conventional polishing process, the surface roughness of Ra=10nm, and the form error of $Ra={\lambda}/12({\lambda}=632nm)$ has been required. The purpose of this research is to find the optimum machining conditions for reflector cutting of electroless-Ni coated Al alloy and apply the SPDT technique to the manufacturing of ultra precision optical components of metal aspheric reflector.

  • Since 1998, several institutions have deployed mobile instrumented towers to collect research-grade meteorological data from landfalling tropical cyclones. This study examines the wind flow characteristics from seven landfalling tropical cyclones using data collected from eight individual mobile tower deployments which occurred from 1998-2005. Gust factor, turbulence intensity, and integral scale statistics are inspected relative to changing surface roughness, mean wind speed and storm-relative position. Radar data, acquired from the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Surveillance Radar - 1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network, are examined to explore potential relationships with respect to radar reflectivity and precipitation structure (convective versus stratiform). The results indicate tropical cyclone wind flow characteristics are strongly influenced by the surrounding surface roughness (i.e., exposure) at each observation site, but some secondary storm dependencies are also documented.

  • The effects of $Fe_2O_3$ addition on optical and electrical properties of MgO films as a protective layer for AC plasma display panels were investigated. Doped MgO films prepared by the e-beam evaporation have a higher ${\gamma}$ (secondary electron emission coefficient) than pure MgO protective layer. Roughness increased with amount of $Fe_2O_3$ up to 100 ppm and then decreased further addition. These results showed that discharge properties and optical properties of MgO protective layers seemed to be closely related with microstructure factors such as roughness. Good optical and electrical properties of ${\gamma}$ of 0.120, surface roughness of 14.1 nm and optical transmittance of 94.55% were obtained for the MgO + 100 ppm $Fe_2O_3$ protective layer sintered at $1700^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs.

  • Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of two types of sandblasted with large-grit and acid-etched (SLA) surface implants with different surface roughness. Patients and Methods: This study was conducted based on a clinical record review of 55 patients (mean age, 53.00 years). A total of 80 SLA surface implants was placed. Among the 80 implants, 38 implants placed in 29 subjects had surface roughness (Ra) of 3.09 ㎛ (test group, TG), while the other 42 implants placed in 31 subjects had a surface roughness (Ra) of 2.50 ㎛ (control group, CG). A comparison was made of implant primary/secondary stability; success and survival rates; marginal bone loss; and soft tissue assessment including probing pocket depth (PPD), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and bleeding on probing (BOP) between the groups at 1 year after implant placement. Results: Among the implants that were initially registered, 1 from the TG and 4 from the CG dropped out, leaving 37 implants in the TG and 38 implants in the CG to be traced and analyzed. Although 1 TG case showed unstable primary stability, all cases showed stable secondary stability. Success and survival rates at 1 year after implant placement were 100% in both groups. Marginal bone loss was 0.07 mm and 0.00 mm for the TG and CG, respectively, but the difference was not significant. Among the several parameters for evaluation of soft tissue, the TG showed lower PI at 1 year after implant placement (TG=0.00, CG=0.29; P=0.0004), while the remaining categories showed no significant difference between the groups. Conclusion: This study shows that the two types of SLA implants with different surface roughness have no difference in efficacy or safety. Therefore, both of the implants can be used safely and with promising outcomes.

  • The friction coefficients of the rubber for clutch master cylinder were experimentally measured in this study. The cylindrical rubber samples for primary cup-seal and secondary cup-seal were tested against the aluminum or the steel plates of master cylinder housing under the various conditions of brake oil temperatures and normal loads. Dry sliding friction coefficients were also measured under various load conditions. The test revealed following results. First, the friction coefficient under fluid lubrication condition in general decreases, as the oil temperature or normal load increases. Second, the steel plate of low surface roughness yielded comparatively low friction coefficient on the range of 0.30∼0.67. On the other hand, the aluminum plate of high surface roughness yielded high friction coefficient on the range of 0.31∼1.15. Third, the friction coefficient of dry surface contact decreases as the normal load increases. This is contrary to the general principle of friction coefficient between metal plates.

  • $SnO-2$ thin films for thin film secondary battery anode were deposited n glass substrate with stain-less steel collector and charge/discharge experiments were conducted to investigate feasibility of $SnO-2$ thin film as a new anode material. The as-deposited films were pure $SnO-2$ phase which is not related to deposition condition. The grain size on the surface of as-deposited films increased with increase of oxygen partial pressure. However, the grain size did not show any change above oxygen partial pressure of 80:20. The surface roughness of the as-deposited films increased after decreasing because of resputtering effect of oxygen negative ion in plasma. All films showed typical $SnO-2$ anode characteristics which has a side effect at the first cycle, which is not related to the deposition condition. The charge/discharge experiments of 200cycles indicated that capacity of $SnO-2$ films depended on oxygen contents and surface roughness. The cycle characteristics was determined by initial charge/discharge reaction. The $SnO-2$ film with low initial capacity showed more stable cycle characteristics than film with high initial capacity.

  • Boron Phosphide films were deposited on the glass substrate at the low temperature, 55$0^{\circ}C$, by the reaction of B$_2$H$_{6}$ with PH$_3$ using CVD. $N_2$ was employed as carrier gas. The optimal gas rates were 50 $m\ell$/min for B$_2$H$_{6}$, 50 $m\ell$/min for PH$_3$ $m\ell$/min and 1.5 $\ell$/min for $N_2$. To investigate the annealing effect, the films were annealed for 1hour, 3hours in $N_2$ambient at 55$0^{\circ}C$ and tested. The deposition rate was 1000$\AA$/min and the refractive index of film was 2.6. The measurement of X-RD shows that the films have the preferred orientation of (1 0 1) and the intensity of the peak for (1 0 1) orientation decreases according to the annealing time. The data of VIS spectrophotometer proved that the films are transparent in the visible range and the maximal transmittance increases according to the annealing time; 75.49% for as-deposited, 76.71% for 1hr-annealed and 86.4 % for 3hrs-annealed. The measurement of AFM shows that the average surface roughness increases according to the annealing time; 73$\AA$ for as-deposited, 88.9$\AA$ for 1hr-annealed and 220$\AA$ for 3hrs-annealed. Also, The data of the secondary electron emission rate(Υ) shows that the secondary electron emission rate increases according to the annealing time; 0.317 for 1hr-deposited, 0.357 for 1hr-annealed and 0.537 for 3hrs-annealed. And, The measurement of FT-IR that the characteristic of transmittance in the infrared range was stabilized through annealing.ing.

  • A light beam reflected from a machined surface generally containes information concerning about its surface roughness. This study examines and proposes a surface roughness measurement technique for on-machine measurement of machined surfaces. The technique is based on the measurement of a reflected laser beam pattern and the statistical analysis of its light intensity distribution. The surface roughness was found to be closely related to the standard deviation of the light intensity on the primary axis of the reflected pattern. An image acquisition device is made up of a laser diode, a half mirror, a screen, and a CCD camera. The exact image with the primary and secondary axes of a reflected laser beam pattern is calculated through such image processing algorithm as thresholding, edge detection, image rotation, segmentation, etc. A median filter and a surrounding light correction algorithm are improve the image quality and reduce the measuring error. Using the developed measuring device the effect of screen materials and workpiece and workpiece materials was investigated. Experimental results regarding to relatively high-quality surfaces machined by grinding, polishing, lapping processes have shown the measurement error is within 10% in the range of $0.1{mu}m~0.8{\mu}m R_q.$Therefore, the proposed method is thought to be effectively used when quick measurements is needed with workpieces fixed on the machine.

  • Using the geometric and the vector methods, three dimensional surface texture and roughness models in flat end milling are developed. In these models, rear cutting effect on surface generation is considered along with tool run-out and tool setting error including tool tilting and eccentricity between tool center and spindle rotational center. Rear cutting is the secondary cutting of the already machined surface by the trailing cutting edge. The effects of tool geometry and tool deflection on surface roughness are also considered. For representing the surface texture more practically, three dimentional surface topography parameters such as RMS deviaiton, skewness and kurtosis are introduced and used in expressing the surface texture characteristics. Under various cutting conditions, it is confirmed that the developed models predict the real surface profile precisely. These models could contribute to the cutter design and cutting condition selection for the reduction of machining and manual finishing time.

  • Nano-wear and friction of carbon overcoated laser-textured and mechanically-textured computer hard disk were characterised after contact start/stop (CSS) wear test. Various analytical and mechanical testing techniques were employed to study the changes in topography, roughness, chemical elements, mechanical properties and friction characteristics of the coating arising from the contact start/stop wear test These techniques include: the atomic force microscopy (AFM), the continuous nano-indentation test, the nano-scratch test, the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and the auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It was shown that the surface roughness of the laser-textured (LT) bump and mechanically textured (MT) Bone was reduced approximately am and 7nm, respectively, after the CSS wear test. The elastic modulus and hardness values increased after the CSS test, indicating straining hardening of the top coating layer, A critical load was also identified fer adhesion failure between the magnetic layer and the Ni-P layer, The TOF-SIMS analysis also revealed some reduction in the intensity of C and $C_2$$F_59$, confirming the wear of lubricant elements on the coating surface.
