Research and development of Hyundai FFVs(flexible fuel vehicles) (현대 FFV(Flexible Fuel Vehicle) 개발)

  • This paper describes Hyundai's research and development work on a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV). The work on FFV has been conducted to evaluate its potential as an alternative to the conventional gasoline vehicle. Hyundai FFV described here can be operated on M85, gasoline, or any of their combinations, in which the methanol concentration is measured by an electrostatic type fuel sensor. For that operation, a special FFV ECU(Eletronic Control Unit) has been developed and incorporated in the FFV. The characteristics affecting FFV operation, such as FFV ECU control strategy and injector flow rate, have been investigated and optimized through the experiment. And various development tests have been performed in view of engine performance, durability, cold startability, and exhaust emissions reduction. The exhaust gas aftertreatment system consisting of manifold type catalyst and secondary air injection system shows good emission reduction performance including formaldehyde, and finally, the possibility of the FFVs as the low emission vehicles is evaluated by presenting NMOG(Non-Methane Organic Gases) levels with respect to M0 and M85. With these results, it is concluded that FFV can be a candidate for the low emission vehicles, but more works on its durability improvement is required.

A multi-field CAE analysis for die turning injection application of reservoir fluid tank (리저버 탱크의 Die Turning Injection 적용을 위한 Multi-field CAE 해석)

  • In this study, die turning injection(DTI) mold design for manufacturing reservoir fluid tanks used for cooling in-vehicle batteries, inverters, and motors was conducted based on multi-field CAE. Part design, performance evaluation, and mold design of the reservoir fluid tank was performed. The frequency response characteristics through modal and harmonic response analysis to satisfy the automotive performance test items for the designed part were examined. Analysis of re-melting characteristics and structural analysis of the driving part for designing the rotating die of the DTI mold were performed. Part design was possible when the natural frequency performance value of 32Hz or higher was satisfied through finite element analysis, and the temperature distribution and deformation characteristics of the part after injection molding were found through the first injection molding analysis. In addition, it can be seen that the temperature change of the primary part greatly influences the re-melting characteristics during the secondary injection. The minimum force for driving the turning die of the designed mold was calculated through structural analysis. Hydraulic system design was possible. Finally, a precise and efficient DTI mold design for the reservoir fluid tank was possible through presented multi-field CAE process.

SPRAY STRUCTURE OF HIGH PRESSURE GASOLINE INJECTOR IN A GASOLINE DIRECT INJECTION ENGINE

  • This study is focussed on the investigation of spray characteristics from the high pressure gasoline injector for the application of gasoline direct injection engine. For the analysis of spray structure of high pressure gasoline injector; the laser scattering method with a Nd-Yag laser and the Phase Doppler particle analyzer system were applied to observe the spray development and the measurement of the droplet size and velocity of the spray, respectively. Also spatial velocity distribution of the spray droplet was measured by use of the particle image velocity system. Experimental results show that high pressure gasoline injector shapes the hollow-cone spray, and produce the upward ring shaped vortex on the spray surface region. This upward ring shaped vortex promotes the secondary atomization of fuel droplets and contributes to a uniform distribution of fuel droplets. Most of fuel droplets are distributed under 31$\mu m$ of the mean droplet size (SMD) and the frequency distribution of the droplet size under 25$\mu m$ is over 95% at 7 MPa of injection pressure. According to the experimental results of PIV system, the flow patterns of the droplets velocity distribution in spray region are in good agreement with the spray macroscopic behaviors obtained from the visualization investigation.

  • In general, DI gasoline engine has the advantages of higher power output, higher thermal efficiency, higher EGR tolerance and lower emissions due to the operation characteristics of increased volumetric efficiency, compression ratio and ultra-lean combustion scheme. In order to apply the concept of stratified charge into direct injection gasoline engine, some kinds of methodologies have been adapted in various papers. In this study, a reflector was adapted around the injector nozzle to apply the concept of stratified charge combustion which leads the air-fuel mixture to be rich near spark plug. Therefore, the mixture near the spark plug is locally rich to ignite while the lean mixture is wholly introduced into the combustion chamber. The characteristics of combustion is analyzed with the variations of fuel injection pressure and load in a stratified -charge direct injection single cylinder gasoline engine. The obtained results are summarized as follows ; 1. The MBT spark timing approached to TDC with the increase of load on account of the increase of evaporation energy, but has little relation with fuel injection pressure. 2. The stratification effects are apparent with the increase of injection pressure. It is considered by the development of secondary diffusive combustion and the increase of heat release of same region, but proceed rapidly than diesel engine. Especially, in the case of high pressure injection (l70bar) and high load (3.0kgf m), the diffusive combustion parts are developed excessively and results in the decrease of peak pressure than in the case of middle load. 3. The index of engine stability, COVimep value, is drastically decreased with the increase of load. 4. To get better performance of DI gasoline engine development, staged optimizaion must be needed such as injection pressure, reflector, intake swirl, injection timing, chamber shape, ignition system and so on. In this study, the I50bar injection pressure is appeared as the optimum.

Development of Water Reusing System by Using Net3FM (Net Fit Fiber Filter Module) (그물망 압착식 섬유여과장치를 이용한 물 재이용 시스템 개발)

  • This study was carried out to develop pilot plant Net3FM(Net Fit Fiber Filter Module) system and to suggest optimum operating condition for municipal wastewater reuse. SS concentration of biologically treated sewage effluent was reduced from 1.5~5.4mg/L to 0.4~1.0mg/L without coagulant injection in Net3FM system, and the SS removal efficiency was average 84.7%. And also, the removal efficiencies of COD and T-P were decreased slightly due to the SS removal by filtration. Coagulation-Filtration test was conducted to enhance the removal efficiencies of SS and T-P. The optimum dosage of coagulant was injected automatically by auto-controlling system, which is controlled by detecting value of turbidity of secondary sewage effluent. SS, COD and T-P concentrations in filtrated effluent were 0.21~0.57, 1.6~6.2 and 0.137~0.392mg/L with coagulant injection by in-line mixer in Net3FM system, respectively. The removal efficiencies of SS and T-P were highly increased to 92.8% and 89.8%, respectively. It was due to the combined the processes of coagulation and filtration. Net3FM system was evaluated that the removal efficiency of pollutants in secondary sewage effluent and the utilization potential as reclaimed water technology were very high.

Application of Compression Molding to Determination of Binder System for Low Pressure Injection Molding (열간압축성형에 의한 저압사출성형 결합제 시스템의 결정)

  • Dispersion condition of Si3N4 powder in molten wax was established by comparing relative viscosity of mixture with 20 vol% solids loading, while the evaluation of compression-molded sample was demonstrated as an effective method for developing a binder system for injection molding. The best dispersion of Si3N4 powder in molten wax was achieved when Si3N4 powder was treated with 5% stearic acid, and the critical powder volume fraction was determined to be about 0.51 from density measurement of compression-molded samples. Samples containing polar secondary binder showed markedly improved green strength, higher thermal expansion and increased wicking rate in the early stage.

Therapeutic Effect of OK-432 for Lymphangioma in Children (OK-432를 사용한 소아 림프관종 치료효과)

  • Lymphangioma is a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system that expands into the surrounding tissues in a manner similar to a malignant tumor. Surgical excision has been the treatment of choice, but the results are often unsatisfactory due to incomplete resection, fluid collection and recurrences. Intralesional injection of OK-432(lyophilized incubation mixture of Group A Streptococcus pyogenes of human origin) was employed in treating 24 patients with lymphangiomas between 1992 and 1997. The method was used in 21 patients as a primary therapy, and in 3 patients for unresectable or recurrent cases as a secondary treatment. The results were excellent in 8 patients (33.3%), good in 7 patients (21.8 %) and poor in 7 patients (21.8 %). The side effects were fever under $39^{\circ}C$ and local inflammation. However these symptoms subsided in a few days without serious sequelae. These results suggest that intralesional injection of OK-432 is safe and effective treatment for primary lymphangioma as well as a secondary therapy for unresectable or recurrent cases.

Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics in a Slot Film Cooling with Various Flow Inlet Conditions (냉각유로방식 변화에 따른 슬롯 막냉각에서의 유동 및 열전달 특성)

  • An experimental investigation is conducted to improve a slot film cooling system which can be used for the cooling of gas turbine combustor liner. The tangential slots are constructed of discrete holes with different injection types which are the parallel, vertical, and combined to the slot lip. The investigation is focused on the coolant supply systems of normal-, parallel-, and counter-flow paths to the mainstream direction. A naphthalene sublimation technique has been employed to measure the local heat/mass transfer coefficients in a slot with various injection types and coolant feeding directions. The velocity distributions at the exit of slot lip for the parallel and vertical injection types are fairly uniform with mild periodical patterns with respect to the hole positions. However, the combined injection type increases the nonuniformity of flow distribution with the period equaling twice that of hole-to-hole pitch due to splitting and merging of the ejected flows. The secondary flow at the lip exit has uniform velocity distributions for the parallel and vertical injection types, which are similar to the results of a two-dimensional slot injection. In the results of local heat/mass transfer coefficient, the best cooling performance inside the slot is obtained with the vertical injection type among the three different injection types due to the effect of jet impingement. The lateral distributions of Sh with the parallel- and counter-flow paths are more uniform than the normal flow path. The averaged Sh with the injection holes are $2{\sim}5$ times higher than that of a smooth two-dimensional slot path.

Experimental Study on NOx Reduction and CO Emission by Fuel Lean Reburning Process (연료 희박 재연소 과정에 의한 NOx 저감 및 CO 발생에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Reburning is a useful technology in reducing nitric oxide through injection of a secondary hydrocarbon fuel. In this paper, an experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effect of fuel lean reburning on $NO_X/CO$ reduction in LPG flame. Experiments were performed in flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which was mounted at the bottom of the furnace. Tests were conducted using LPG gas as the reburn fuel as well as the main fuel. The effects of reburn fuel fraction and injection location of the reburn fuel were studied when the fuel lean reburning system was applied. The paper reports data on flue gas emissions and temperature distribution in the furnace for a wide range of experimental conditions. At steady state, temperature distribution and emission formation in the furnace have been measured and compared. This paper makes clear that in order to decrease both NOx and CO concentrations in the exhaust when the fuel lean reburning system was adapted, it is important that the control of some factors such as initial equivalence ratio, reburn fuel fraction and temperature of reburn fuel injection region. Also it shows the fuel lean reburning is also effective method to reduce NOx as much as reburning.
