  • In order to elucidate the formation of reaction tissues during the transition from primary to secondary growth, the developmental anatomy was conducted in the first internode of Ginkgo biloba seedling in horizontal position. The righting of the horizontal first internode took place at the middle portion and gradually proceeded to the base during the primary growth. Reaction tissues were formed corresponding to the righting movement in the horizontal first internode. During the transition from primary to secondary growth, compression wood was gradually developed on the lower side only. The anatomical features of compression wood also extended longitudinally to the lower side of the vertical portion where it coincided with the lower side of the horizontal first internode occurs acropetally from basal to apical portion. Eventually, some of the anatomical features of compression wood occurred at the primary growth. And the typical compression wood is gradually established during the secondary growth. On the other hand, the lower side tracheid and ray were longer and higher than those of the upper side in the horizontal first internode. However, difference in the width of ray was not observed between the lower and upper sides.

  • Consolidation settlements of soft clay are often large and potentially damaging to the structures. Currently, large-scale construction projects for airport and harbor etc. are in progress in Korea and many of these structures will be constructed on thick and soft clay layers. For this kind of ground condition, evaluation of consolidation settlement is required at every design and construction stages, and the magnitude of secondary compression appears to be larger than expected. Generally, the magnitude of secondary compression is evaluated by laboratory and in-situ consolidation tests or by empirical $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$, relationship. The use of empirical value $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ may be economical, fast and powerful tool in estimating secondary consolidation settlement. However, the databases of the $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$, for typical soft clays in Korea are insufficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ on marine clay near the southern sea in Korea. A series of incremental loading consolidation tests with measurement of pore water pressure were performed. It was found that the $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ of undisturbed marine clay is 0.0397. This value is similar to that proposed by Mesri and Castro(1987) on inorganic clay and silt. and silt. and silt.

  • In soft ground, consolidation settlement is mainly consider. The primary consolidation settlement which is the time when the excess pore water pressure is completely dispersed and the secondary consolidation settlement which follows. Recently as the depth of consolidation layer increases the consideration of not only the primary consolidation settlement but also of the secondary consolidation settlement becomes a very important element. But up to the present there were only a few in-depth study of the secondary consolidation settlement performed. At present there are a lot of methods available when it comes to the improvement of soft soil. In this study, Preloading Method which is the most commonly used soft soil improvement method locally was used in order to investigate the method for the reduction of secondary consolidation settlement. The objective of this study is to determine the amount of preloading required to reduce secondary consolidation settlement and to determine whether secondary consolidation settlement using standard consolidation test.

  • Tianjin, which is located on the west shore of the Bohai Sea, is part of China's Circum-Bohai-Sea Region, where very weak clay is deposited. From the 1970s to the early $21^{st}$ century, Tianjin marine clay deposits have been the subject of numerous geotechnical investigations. Because of these deposits' geological complexity, great depositional thickness, high water content, large void ratio, excessive settlement, and low shear strength, the geotechnical properties of Tianjin marine clay need to be summarized and evaluated based on various in situ and laboratory tests so that Tianjin can safely and economically sustain more infrastructure in the coming decades. In this study, the properties of Tianjin marine clay, especially its consolidation properties, are summarized, evaluated and discussed. The focus is on establishing correlations between the geotechnical property indexes and mechanical parameters of Tianjin marine clay. These correlations include the correlations between the water content and the void ratio, the depth and the undrained shear strength, the liquid limit and the compression index, the tip resistance and the constrained modulus, the plasticity index and the ratio of undrained shear strength and the preconsolidation pressure. In addition, the primary consolidation properties of Tianjin marine clay, such as the intrinsic compression line (ICL), sedimentation compression line (SCL), compression index, $C_c$, coefficient of consolidation, $C_v$, and hydraulic conductivity change index, $C_{kv}$, are evaluated and discussed. A secondary consolidation property, i.e., the secondary compression index, $C_a$, is also investigated, and the results show that the ratio of $C_a/C_c$ for Tianjin marine clay can be used to calculate $C_a$ in secondary consolidation settlement predictions.

  • In refuse landfill, long-term settlement is considerably dependent upon the biological decomposition of refuse which is distinguished from typical soil behavior. Two equations are combined in order to model long-term settlement behavior of refuse landfill caused by mechanical secondary compression and secondary compression caused by the decomposition of biolegradable refuse. It is suggested that mechanical secondary compression is linear with respcet to the logarithm of time. In order to estimate the settlement that occurs due. to the decomposition of biodegradable refuse, a mathematical model is used which theoretically conoiders the decomposition process related to the solubilization stage of biodegradable refuse solid. This model is based on hydrolysis process and expressed as first order kinetics. The proposed model is applied to Lysimeter compression data of an old refuse. This paper intends to propose the simplest mathematical model which effectively represents settlement caused by the solubilization stage of biodegradable refuse solid on decomposition process.

  • Concrete slab track was applied to the Gyeoungbu High Speed Railroad step 2 and the Honam High Speed Railroad. Concrete slab track incurs higher construction cost and lower maintenance cost than existing gravel track. For these reasons, the use of concrete slab track has increased in Korea. The biggest problem in the use of concrete slab track is repairing damage from settlement that can occur while trains are in service. High speed railroad design standards require allowable residual settlement of concrete slab track of less than 25mm. In order to satisfy the requirement of long term stability of concrete slab track, it is necessary to manage the secondary compression settlement within the allowable residual settlement. This study is to evaluate the secondary compression settlement with the variation of the secondary compression index, thickness of soft ground, and concrete slab track life. Statistical analysis is performed to determine the probability of distribution of areas where serious problems will be caused after the concrete slab track is constructed.

  • A series of long term consolidation tests were conducted under loading -unloading and loading(pc) -unloading(p.) -reloading(p,) conditions using reconstituted clay in order to investigate the effect of stress history on secondary consolidation characteristics and the applicability of the secondary consolidation model suggested by Bjerrum to overconsolidated clays. According to the test results, the secondary compression settlement affected by the stress history in the first half of experimental period and the coefficient of secondary compression, C‥‥ is dependent on overconsolidation ratio, OCR(p,1 p.), maBium OCR (p./p.), and unloading duration time. Moreover the coefficient of secondary consolidation in the latter half of experimental period Cn is mainly affected by OCR and it gradually reduces with OCR increment. Finally the comparison of the experimental results with the Bjerrum model indicates that the Bjerrum model can be applied beyond certain range of stress history in the overconsolidated clay.

  • The structure of spiral thickenings, particulary the appearance, arrangement and orientation of thickenings in compression wood of Torreya nucifera, were studied in detail by light and polarizing microscope, scanning and transmission electron microscope. The results obtained are as follows: (1) Using the inclined sections at an angle of 45 degrees to the fiber axis, it seems that we can not only observe the more accurate transverse view of the thickenings but also investigate the formation of their thickenings. (2) Generally 2-4 pieces of thickenings are projected to the cell lumen as nipple-like appearance in transverse section and are as frequent, well developed, forming pair and have the rope-like appearance in radial surface. (3) The secondary wall of early wood is composed of 3 layers (S1, S2, S3) and orientation of thickening appears S helix but that of late wood is of 2 layers (S1, S2) and that orientation shows Z helix. Above two regions are demaracted at several tracheid cells from the growth ring boundary. (4) Orientation of thickening seems to be a element showing the characteristics of compression wood in Torreya nucifera. (5) It believes that the thickenings of compression wood are integral part of the S3 in early wood tracheids and of the S2 in late wood and have the same orientations as the inner-most microfibrils in these layers. (6) Thickening and cavities seem to be not formed together in a secondary cell wall of same tracheids.
