  • Ratcheting is the cyclic buildup of inelastic strain on a structure resulting from a combination of primary and secondary cyclic stress. It can lead to excessive plastic deformation, incremental collapse, or fatigue. Ratcheting has been numerically investigated on a cantilever beam, considering the current study's primary and secondary bending loads. In addition, the effect of input frequency on the onset of ratcheting has been investigated. The non-linear dynamic elastic-plastic approach has been utilized. Analogous to Yamashita's bending-bending ratchet diagram, a non-dimensional ratchet diagram with a frequency effect is proposed. The result presents that the secondary stress values fall sequentially with the increase of primary stress values. Moreover, a displacement amplification factor graph is also established to explain the effect of frequency on ratchet occurrence conditions. In terms of frequency effect, it has been observed that the lower frequency (0.25 times the natural frequency) was more detrimental for ratchet occurrence conditions than the higher frequency (2 times the natural frequency) due to the effect of dynamic displacement. Finally, the effect of material modeling of ratcheting behavior on a beam is shown using different hardening coefficients of kinematic hardening material modeling.

  • We investigated the antifungal activities of an endophytic fungus identified as Acaromyces ingoldii, found on a loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) pine bolt in Louisiana during routine laboratory microbial isolations. The specific objectives were to determine the inhibitory properties of A. ingoldii secondary metabolites (crude extract) on the mycelial growth of a brown-rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum and a white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor, and to determine the effective concentration of A. ingoldii crude preparation against the two decay fungi in vitro. Results show the crude preparation of A. ingoldii from liquid culture possesses significant mycelial growth inhibitory properties that are concentration dependent against the brownrot and white-rot fungi evaluated. An increase in the concentration of A. ingoldii secondary metabolites significantly decreased the mycelial growth of both wood decay fungi. G. trabeum was more sensitive to the inhibitory effect of the secondary metabolites than T. versicolor. Identification of specific A. ingoldii secondary metabolites, and analysis of their efficacy/specificity warrants further study. Findings from this work may provide the first indication of useful roles for Acaromyces species in a forest environment, and perhaps a future potential in the development of biocontrol-based wood preservation systems.

  • We studied the effect of secondary electron emission from the back plate of AC-PDP, on the ramp waveform driving of the system, using two-dimensional PDP cell discharge simulator. It is found that the secondary electron emission from back plate plays a significant role in getting a stable weak discharge during the ramping up of X-Y electrode voltage. This is because grounded address electrode acts as a cathode during the setup of surface charge, and the secondary electron emission from phosphor in the back plate must be large enough to accumulate surface charges on the dielectric layers without strong plasma discharge. We have concluded that the secondary electron emission coefficient(${\gamma}$) of phosphor, besides MgO, must be known to understand the characteristics of the PDP system. A few suggestions for improvement of the system is also made and tested.

  • In this paper, a new formula for primary and secondary thrust of metal belt CVT is proposed considering variation of band tension, block compression and active arc for each of the primary and secondary pulleys. For the secondary thrust, effective friction coefficient is introduced considering the effect of flange deflection. Nondimensional primary and secondary thrust of the metal belt CVT by the new formula agree well with the experimental results except for low torque range, $0\;<\;{\lambda}\;<\;0.2$ at speed ration i = 1.0. The new formula can be used in design of the primary and secondary thrusts control system for the metal belt CVT.

  • In this paper, we studied on an attenuation effect of automobile exhaust noise according to the direction of canceling speaker in ANC system. Automobile exhaust noise was recorded at 800 rpm, 3500 rpm and 5000 rpm of a diesel engine. Directions of canceling speaker can be set to $30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and $150^{\circ}$ against the primary noise flow by acrylic ducts to be made for the experimentation. DSP board with TMS320C6416 chip of Texas Instrument Co. used to control the ANC system. The algorithm of this ANC system applied the Filtered-x-LMS algorithm that is modified to compensate for a property of DSP input signal and the secondary-path effect. As an experiment result, the direction of canceling speaker was proved to influence the reduction effect of noise. The $150^{\circ}$ duct in the attenuation effect of noise showed a better result than the $90^{\circ}$ or $30^{\circ}$ duct.

  • A coupling capacitor voltage transformer (CCVT) is used in extra high voltage and ultra high voltage transmission systems to obtain the standard low voltage signal for protection and measurement. To obtain the high accuracy at the power system frequency, a tuning reactor is connected between a capacitor and a voltage transformer (VT). Thus, no distortion of the secondary voltage is generated when no fault occurs. However, when a fault occurs, the secondary voltage of the CCVT has some errors due to the transient components resulting from the fault. This paper proposes an algorithm for compensating the secondary voltage of the CCVT in the time domain. With the values of the secondary voltage of the CCVT, the secondary and the primary currents are obtained; then the voltage across the capacitor and the tuning reactoris calculated and then added to the measured secondary voltage. The proposed algorithm includes the effect of the non-linear characteristic of the VT and the influence of the ferro-resonance suppression circuit. Test results indicate that the algorithm can successfully compensate the distorted secondary voltage of the CCVT irrespective of the fault distance, the fault inception angle and the fault impedance.

  • The present numerical study investigates the effect of a secondary flow on the heat transfer in order to delineate the mechanism of laminar heat transfer enhancement of a viscoelastic fluid in rectangular ducts. The second normal stress generating a secondary flow is modeled by adopting the Reiner-Rivlin constitutive equation and the calculated secondary flow showed good agreement with experiments. The primary velocity U as well as the pressure drop were not affected by the secondary flow in rectangular ducts, whose order of magnitude is less than 0.1% of the primary velocity. The small magnitude of the secondary flow, however, affect moderately the temperature fields. The calculated Nusselt numbers with secondary flow show 50% heat transfer enhancement over those of a purely viscous non-Newtonian fluid, which are considerably lower than the experimental values. Therefore, we conclude that there should be an additional heat transfer enhancement mechanism involved in the viscoelastic fluid such as temperature-dependence.

  • The secondary motion of piston occurs due to the transient forces and moments in the clearances between piston skirt and cylinder liner The motions are very related to the skirt profile and the magnitude of piston-pin offset. Above all, the elastic deformation is another major effect on the piston secondary motion that has not been considered in the previous researches. In this work, the effects of elastic deformation of the piston skirt on the secondary piston motion are studied for the frictional power loss by using commercial softares, PISDYN and ANSYS.

  • Effect of wall curvature on flow characteristics is studied for mildly and strongly curved duct flows. The ducts are S-shaped, and the flow is partially blocked at the rear of the downstream. The presence of blockage in combination with curvature generates secondary flows on the concave surface; the magnitude of the secondary flow being dependent on the degree of wall curvature. Objectives are to compare the flow structures for mild and strong cases and to illuminate the changes in flow structure as the flow turns. Sensitivity on numerical solutions due to different inflow boundary conditions is also examined.
