Large numbers of submarine pipelines are laid as the world now is attaching great importance to offshore oil exploitation. Free spanning of submarine pipelines may be caused by seabed unevenness, change of topology, artificial supports, etc. By combining Iwan's wake oscillator model with the differential equation which describes the vibration behavior of free-span submarine pipelines, the pipe-fluid coupling equation is developed and solved in order to study the effect of both internal and external fluid on the vibration behavior of free-span submarine pipelines. Through generalized integral transform technique (GITT), the governing equation describing the transverse displacement is transformed into a system of second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in temporal variable, eliminating the spatial variable. The MATHEMATICA built-in function NDSolve is then used to numerically solve the transformed ODE system. The good convergence of the eigenfunction expansions proved that this method is applicable for predicting the dynamic response of free-span pipelines subjected to both internal flow and external current.

In this study, 2D computations of the Aeolian tones for some obstacles (circular cylinder, square cylinder and NACA0012 airfoil) are simulated. First of all, we calculate the flow noise generated by a uniform flow around a two-dimensional circular cylinder at Re=150 are simulated by applying the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). The third-order-accurate up-wind scheme (UTOPIA) is used for the spatial derivatives, and the second-order-accurate Runge-Kutta scheme is applied for the time marching. The results show that we successively capture very small acoustic pressure fluctuation with the same frequency of the Karman vortex street compared with the pressure fluctuation around a circular cylinder. The propagation velocity of the acoustic waves shows that the points of peak pressure are biased upstream due to the Doppler effect in the uniform flow. Acoustic sounds generated by a uniform flow around a two-dimensional circular cylinder at Re=200 are simulated using finite difference lattice Boltzmann method. A third-order-accurate up-wind scheme is used for spartial derivatives, and a second-order-accurate Runge-Kutta scheme is used for time marching. The results show that in capturing very small acoustic pressure fluctuation with same frequency of Karman vortex street compared with the pressure fluctuation around a circular cylinder. The propagation velocity of acoustic sound is presented that acoustic which approaches tire upstream due to Doppler effect in the uniform flow slowly propagates, while that for the downstream quickly propagates. It is also apparent that the size of sound pressure is proportional for central distance $r^{-1/2}$ of the cylinder.

Surmounting complexities in analyzing the mechanical parameters of concrete entails selecting an appropriate methodology. This study integrates a novel metaheuristic technique, namely satin bowerbird optimizer (SBO) with artificial neural network (ANN) for predicting uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of concrete. For this purpose, the created hybrid is trained and tested using a relatively large dataset collected from the published literature. Three other new algorithms, namely Henry gas solubility optimization (HGSO), sunflower optimization (SFO), and vortex search algorithm (VSA) are also used as benchmarks. After attaining a proper population size for all algorithms, the Utilizing various accuracy indicators, it was shown that the proposed ANN-SBO not only can excellently analyze the UCS behavior, but also outperforms all three benchmark hybrids (i.e., ANN-HGSO, ANN-SFO, and ANN-VSA). In the prediction phase, the correlation indices of 0.87394, 0.87936, 0.95329, and 0.95663, as well as mean absolute percentage errors of 15.9719, 15.3845, 9.4970, and 8.0629%, calculated for the ANN-HGSO, ANN-SFO, ANN-VSA, and ANN-SBO, respectively, manifested the best prediction performance for the proposed model. Also, the ANN-VSA achieved reliable results as well. In short, the ANN-SBO can be used by engineers as an efficient non-destructive method for predicting the UCS of concrete.

The present study investigates heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics in a ribbed rotating passage with turning region. The duct has an aspect ratio (W/H) of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of 26.67 mm. Rib turbulators are attached in the cross arrangement on the leading and trailing surfaces of the passage. The ribs have a rectangular cross section of $2\;mm\;(e){\times}\;mm\;(w)$ and an attack angle of $70^{\circ}$. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 7.5, and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio ($e/D_h$) is 0.075. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.20 while the Reynolds number is constant at 10,000. To verify the heat/mass transfer augmentation, internal flow structures are calculated for the same conditions using a commercial code FLUENT 6.1. The heat transfer data of the smooth duct for various Ro numbers agree well with not only the McAdams correlation but also the previous studies. The cross-rib turbulators significantly enhance heat/mass transfer in the passage by disturbing the main flow near the surfaces and generating one asymmetric cell of secondary flow skewing along the ribs. Because the secondary flow is induced in the first-pass and turning region, heat/mass transfer discrepancy is observed in the second-pass even for the stationary case. When the passage rotates, heat/mass transfer and flow phenomena change. Especially, the effect of rotation is more dominant than the effect of the ribs at the higher rotation number in the upstream of the second-pass.
The present study investigates the effects of various rib arrangements and rotating on heat/mass transfer in the cooling passage of gas turbine blades. The cooling passage has very complex flow structure, because of the rib turbulator and rotating effect. Experiments and numerical calculation are conducted to investigate the complex flow structures and heat transfer characteristics; the numerical computation is performed using a commercial code, FLUENT ver.5, to calculate the flow structures and the experiments are conducted to measure heat/mass transfer coefficients using a naphthalene sublimation technique. For the rotating duct tests, the test duct, which is the cross section of is $20mm\times40mm$ (the hydraulic diameter, $D_h$, of 26.7 mm, has two-pass with $180^{\circ}$ turning and the rectangular ribs on the wall. The rib angle of attack is $70^{\circ}$ and the maximum radius of rotation is $21.63D_h$. The partition wall has 10 mm thickness, which is 0.5 times to the channel width, and the distance between the tip of the partition wall and the outer wall of the turning region is 26.7 mm $(1D_h)$. The turning effect of duct flow makes the very complex flow structure including Dean type vortex and high turbulence, so that the heat/mass transfer increases in the turning region and at the entrance of the second pass. The Coriolis effect deflects the flow to the trailing surface, resulting in enhancement of the heat/mass transfer on the trailing surface and reduction on the leading surface in the first pass. However, the opposite phenomena are observed in the second pass. The each rib arrangement makes different secondary flow patterns. The complex heat/mass transfer characteristics are observed by the combined effects of the rib arrangements, duct rotation and flow turning.

In recent years, modularization of engine parts has increased the application of plastic products in air intake systems. Plastic intake manifolds provide many advantages including reduced weight, contracted cost, and lower intake air temperatures. These manifolds, however, have some weakness when compared with customary aluminium intake manifolds, in that they have low sound transmission loss because of their lower material density. This low transmission loss of plastic intake manifolds causes several problems related to flow noise, especially when the throttle is opened quickly. The physical processes, responsible for this flow noise, include turbulent fluid motion and relative motion of the throttle to the airflow. The former is generated by high-speed airflow in the splits between the throttle valve and the inner-surface of the throttle body and surge-tank, which can be categorized into the quadrupole source. The latter induces the unsteady force on the flow, which can be classified into the dipole source. In this paper, the mechanism of noise generation from the turbulence is only investigated as a preliminary study. Stochastic noise source synthesis method is adopted for the analysis of turbulence-induced, i.e. quadrupole noise by throttle at quick opening state. The method consists of three procedures. The first step corresponds to the preliminary time-averaged Navier-Stokes computation with a $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model providing mean flow field characteristics. The second step is the synthesis of time-dependent turbulent velocity field associated with quadrupole noise sources. The final step is devoted to the determination of acoustic source terms associated with turbulent velocity. For the first step, we used market available analysis tools such as STAR-CD, the trade names of fluid analysis tools available on the market. The steady state flows at three open angle of throttle valve, i.e. 20, 35 and 60 degree, are numerically analyzed. Then, time-dependent turbulent velocity fields are produced by using the stochastic model and the flow analysis results. Using this turbulent velocity field, the turbulence-originated noise sources, i.e. the self-noise and shear-noise sources are synthesized. Based on these numerical results, it is found that the origin of the turbulent flow and noise might be attributed to the process of formulation and the interaction of two vortex lines formed in the downstream of the throttle valve. These vortex lines are produced by the non-uniform splits between the throttle valve and inner cylinder surface. Based on the analysis, we present the low-noise design of the inner geometry of throttle body.

Although commercial PIV systems have been widely used for the non-intrusive velocity field measurement of fluid flows, they are still under development and have considerable room for improvement. In this study, a single-frame double-exposure PIV system using a high-resolution CCD camera was developed. A pulsed Nd:Yag laser and high-resolution CCD camera were synchronized by a home-made control circuit. In order to resolve the directional ambiguity problem encountered in the single-frame PIV technique, the second particle image was genuinely shifted in the CCD sensor array during the time interval dt. The velocity vector field was determined by calculating the displacement vector at each interrogation window using cross-correlation with 50% overlapping. In order to check the effect of spatial resolution of CCD camera on the accuracy of PIV velocity field measurement, the developed PIV system with three different resolution modes of the CCD camera (512 ${\times}$ 512, lK ${\times}$ IK, 2K ${\times}$ 2K) was applied to a turbulent flow which simulate the Zn plating process of a steel strip. The experimental model consists of a snout and a moving belt. Aluminum flakes about $1{\mu}m$ diameter were used as scattering particles for the liquid flow in the zinc pot and the gas flow above the zinc surface was seeded with atomized olive oil with an average diameter of 1-$3{\mu}m$. Velocity field measurements were carried out at the strip speed $V_s$=1.0 m/s. The 2K ${\times}$ 2K high-resolution PIV technique was significantly superior compared to the smaller pixel resolution PIV system. For the cases of 512 ${\times}$ 512 and 1K ${\times}$ 1K pixel resolution PIV system, it was difficult to get accurate flow structure of viscous flow near the wall and small vortex structure in the region of large velocity gradient.
This paper presents a 1:25 multi-freedom aero-elastic model for a high lighting pole at the Zhoushan stadium. To validate the similarity characteristics of the model, a free vibration test was performed before the formal test. Beat phenomenon was found and eliminated by synthesis of vibration in the X and Y directions, and the damping ratio of the model was identified by the free decay method. The dynamic characteristics of the model were examined and compared with the real structure; the similarity results were favorable. From the test results, the major along-wind dynamic response was the first vibration component. The along-wind wind vibration coefficient was calculated by the China code and Eurocode. When the peak factor equaled 3.5, the coefficient calculated by the China code was close to the experimental result while Eurocode had a slight overestimation of the coefficient. The wind vibration coefficient during typhoon flow was analyzed, and a magnification factor was suggested in typhoon-prone areas. By analyzing the power spectrum of the dynamic cross-wind base shear force, it was found that a second-order vortex-excited resonance existed. The cross-wind response in the test was smaller than Eurocode estimation. The aerodynamic damping ratio was calculated by random decrement technique and the results showed that aerodynamic damping ratios were mostly positive at the design wind speed, which means that the wind-induced galloping phenomenon is predicted not to occur at design wind speeds.
