Total 76 aerosol samples were collected at Sungsan in Cheju Inland by high volume air sample for 1 year, from May 1995 to April 1996, and were analyzed for major elements(Na, Mg, Ca, Al, Fe) and trace elements(Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb, U) by ICP/AES and ICP/MS. This study aims to determine the concentrations of trace metals and their seasonal variations in the atmosphere of Cheju Island, where is the remote area from pollution sources and also is the midway of transport of Asian continental materials into the western North Pacific. The concentrations of Na and Mg contributed by sea-salt aerosols were similar to those in the western part of Cheju island(Kosan) and in the western coast of Korea(Mallipo). They showed the highest value in summer and the lowest in spring and winter. Crustal metals(Al, Fe, Ca, Mn, Co, U) were 2~3 times lower than those of Mallipo. These metals showed the lowest values in summer and the highest in spring. Pollution-derived metals (Zn, Cd and Pb) were 2~4 times lower than those in Malipo. Some elemental ratios in aerosols grouped by three wind directions(north-northwest, east, and south-southwest) such as Fe/Al and Pb/Zn are presented as useful tracers indicating source areas, and their differentiation may be explained by geology and fuel types of source areas.
Seasonal and spatial variations in propagule numbers of Trichoderma species were investigated every other month for one year in deciduous and coniferous forest soils and evaluated the relationships of Trichoderma spp. populations to soil environmental factors. The total population of Trichoderma spp. increased until summer and then declined until winter. The yearly mean frequency of Trichoderma spp. exceeded 1.4% of total fungal propagules in two sites. Decreases of absolute an relative propagule numbers of Trichoderma spp. with increasing soil depth were found and variation in Trichoderma spp. propagules caused by differences in soil depth ($0{\sim}50cm$) was greater than that caused by differences in sampling time. The most common species occurring in two sites was T. viride, followed by T. polysporum, T. koningii, and T. hamatum. Individual species of Trichoderma showed diferent abundance trend in accordance with sampling time. T. viride was dorminant from spring to autumn, while T. polysporum dominated over the other speicies in winter. Variations in propagule number of Trichoderma sppp. were principally mediated by the actions of biotic environmental factors rather than by the direct effects of abiotic factors. In multiple-regression analyses, 48% of the total vaiation in Trichoderma spp. propagules in deciduous site could be accounted for by total fungal propagules and soil CMCase actvity. In coniferous site, 65% of total variation could be accounted for by total fungal and bacterial propagules, moisture content and organic carbon content.

During January $2002{\sim}April\;2004$, hydrogen peroxide ($H_{2}O_{2}$) measurements were performed at the campus of Korea University, which is located in the northeastern part of Seoul. Gas phase hydroperoxide was collected in aqueous solution and separated by HPLC. Concentrations were determined by fluorescence using postcolumn enzyme derivatization. This measurement system was improved to be run automatically from sample collection at every 10 minutes through chemical analysis for data collection. Detection limits of $H_{2}O_{2}$ is $10{\sim}17\;pptv$, and the overall uncertainty of the measurements is better than 8%. Two-year measurements of $H_{2}O_{2}$ show typical seasonal variations. Concentrations of $H_{2}O_{2}$ were higher during $June{\sim}October$ and lower during $January{\sim}February$. Maximum concentration of 1-hour averaged $H_{2}O_{2}$ was 6.5 ppbv, which was observed in August and September. In general $H_{2}O_{2}$ concentrations were well correlated with $O_{3}$ concentrations and largely affected by meteorological factors such as temperature and wind direction.
The variations of morphological features, density and biomass of vegetative shoots and characteristics of reproductive shoots of Zostera caespitosa were examined in Tongyeong, Korea. Morphological features such as leaf length, width and sheath length of Z. caespitosa showed significant seasonal variation (p < 0.001). The highest aboveground value was recorded in late spring to summer and the lowest value in winter. Density and biomass also showed seasonal variations. Annual average shoot density and biomass of Z. caespitosa were recorded as 1,223.4 leaf m-2 and 5,956.9 g w.w.m-2, respectively, and had the highest value in June and lowest values in November and January. Reproductive shoots were observed from April (13℃) to June (21℃). Pistils erected outside sheath, anther dehiscing and small embryos were found in April. Mature fruit and released seeds were found in May and June. These results suggest that this species had a high growth rate in late spring and early summer (15℃-20℃). Reproductive shoots of Z. caespitosa may initially appear at about 10℃ in spring and seed have been released at about 20℃ in fall.

Mulberry silkworm is classified into uni, bi and multivoltine based on the frequency of diapause incidence. The variation in the incidence of diapause in bivoltine silkworm provides a unique opportunity to study the process of evolution of adaptive plasticity towards seasonal variations. The diapause expression in bivoltine silkworm is highly variable and is determined by environmental factors experienced by the maternal generation. Diapause in natural populations is functionally associated with the overwintering mechanism that facilitates survival in harsh winter conditions. In contrast, under standard commercial rearing conditions, the domesticated bivoltine silkworm is known to enter diapause in every generation. This paper presents a short review of the literature dealing with the role of temperature, photoperiod, diapause hormone and its receptor in diapause induction. Also, we briefly review the incidence of non-diapause eggs in bivoltine silkworm under controlled conditions.
For measuring the performance of passive sonars, we usually consider the maximum Detection Range (DR) under the environment and system parameters in operation. In shallow water, where sound waves inevitably interacts with sea surface or bottom, detection generally maintains up to the maximum range. In deep water, however, sound waves may not interact with sea surface or/and bottom, and thus there may exist shadow zones where sound waves can hardly reach. In this situation, DR alone may not completely define the performance of each sonar. For complete description of sonar performance, we employ the concept 'Robustness Of Detection (ROD)'. In the coastal region of the East Sea, the spatial variations of water masses have close relations with DR and ROD, where the two parameters show reverse spatial variations in general. The spatial and temporal analysis of the temperature by employing the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) shows that the 1-st mode represents typical pattern of seasonal variation and the 2-nd mode represents strength variations of mixed layers and currents. The two modes are estimated to explain about 92 % of the variations. Assuming two types of targets located at the depths of 5 m (shallow) and 100 m (deep), the passive sonar performance (DR) gives high negative correlations (about -0.9) with the first two modes. Most of temporal variations of temperature occur from the surface up to 200 m in the water column so that when we assume a target at 100 m, we can expect detection performance of little seasonal variations with passive sonars below 100 m.
In this study, spatio-temporal variations of Land Surface Emissivity (LSE) of the three LSE data sets in the Asian-Oceanian regions were addressed. The MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LSE, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) LSE, and Kongju National Univ. (KNU) LSE data sets were used. The three data sets showed very similar emissivity in the Tibetan Plateau, desert in the Middle East and Australia, and low latitude regions irrespective of season. The emissivity of $12{\mu}m$ was systematically greater than that of $11{\mu}m$, in particular, in the Tibetan Plateau, desert over Middle East and Australia. In general, they showed a weak seasonal variation in the low latitude regions although the emissivity was different among them. However, the three data sets showed quite different spatial and temporal variations in the other regions of Asian-Oceanian regions. The KNU LSE showed a systematic seasonal variation with a high emissivity during summer and low emissivity during winter but the other two LSE data sets showed irregular seasonal variations without regard to the regions. And the annual mean correlations of $11{\mu}m$ and $12{\mu}m$ between KNU LSE and MODIS LSE (KNU LSE and CIMSS LSE; MODIS LSE and CIMSS LSE) were 0.423 and 0.399 (0.330, 0.101; 0.541, 0.154), respectively. The relatively low correlations and strong inter-month variations, in particular, in $12{\mu}m$, indicated that consistency in spatial variation was very low. The comparison results showed that caution should be given before operational use of the LSE data sets in these regions.
This study investigates the temporal and spatial variations of marine meterological elements (air temperature (Temp), Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and Significant Wave Height (SWH)) in seven coastal waters of South Korea, using hourly data observed at marine meteorological buoys (10 sites), Automatic Weather System on lighthouse (lighthouse AWS) (9 sites), and AWS (20 sites) during 2013-2017. We also compared the characteristics of Temp, SST, and air-sea temperature difference (Temp-SST) between sea fog and non-sea-fog events. In general, annual mean values of Temp and SST in most of the coastal waters were highest (especially in the southern part of Jeju Island) in 2016, due to heat waves, and lowest (especially in the middle of the West Sea) in 2013 or 2014. The SWH did not vary significantly by year. Wind patterns varied according to coastal waters, but their yearly variations for each coastal water were similar. The maximum monthly/seasonal mean values of Temp and SST occurred in summer (especially in August), and the minimum values in winter (January for Temp and February for SST). Monthly/seasonal mean SWH was highest in winter (especially in December) and lowest in summer (June), while the monthly/seasonal variations in wind speed over most of the coastal waters (except for the southern part of Jeju Island) were similar to those of SWH. In addition, sea fog during spring and summer was likely to be in the form of advection fog, possibly because of the high Temp and low SST (especially clear SST cooling in the eastern part of South Sea in summer), while autumn sea fog varied between different coastal waters (either advection fog or steam fog). The SST (and Temp-SST) during sea fog events in all coastal waters was lower (and more variable) than during non-sea-fog events, and was up to -5.7℃ for SST (up to 5.8℃ for Temp-SST).
The study was initiated to compare seasonal nutrient variations and rice (Oryza sativa L.) productivity in each of leading rice farm with conventionally managed and recommended fertilized of the large-scale environment-friendly agricultural districts in Jangheung, Suncheon, and Okcheon provinces in 2017. Suncheon rice experimental farm plots included a recommended fertilization plot that had been additionally sown hairy vetch in the fall of previous year, while Okcheon rice farm included a recommended fertilization plot applying half amount of the compost in the conventional plot. A Jangheung rice farm only practiced crop-livestock farming system. Soil pH and EC in all experimental plots were suitable levels for rice growth to cultivate. Seasonal soil pH from March to September was the highest for Suncheon rice farm, and seasonal soil EC was the highest for Jangheung rice farm. Seasonal soil T-N increased in all the plots from March to June in particular for Suncheon rice farm, and Jangheung rice farm had the lowest seasonal soil P. Seasonal soil K decreased in all the plots, with the lowest levels observed for Okcheon farm. Seasonal soil NH4+ mostly increased by up to 90 mg/kg in Jangheung rice farm from March to June. Seasonal plant T-N, P and K concentrations were the highest for Jangheung rice farm. Seasonal plant T-N and P concentrations decreased from June to September, but K leveles were fluctuated between 2.0% and 2.5%. Seasonal SPAD value was the lowest in Suncheon conventional plot. Jangheung rice farm plot produced 6,303 kg of rice per ha, which was approximately two times higher than those of Okcheon recommended plot. The seasonal T-N, P and K balance was the highest in Okcheon conventional plot, with the lowest values observed for Suncheon conventional plot. As a result, Suncheon recommended plot showed relatively low levels of seasonal macro-nutrient balance and the highest rice production, which could be the most environmentally friendly farm practiced conducted in this study.
Seasonal variations in the feeding behaviour of Jamunapari and Barbari goat breeds and their utilization of browse and grass nutrients was evaluated in a promising 3-tier (Leucaena leucocephala- Dichro-stachys nutan-Cenchrus ciliaris) reconstituted pasture during summer, rainy and winter season of the years 1987 and 1988. Distinct diurnal pattern of feeding was observed with both the breeds. Jamunapari goats spent significantly more time foraging during winter season (352.0 min) followed by summer (306.0 min) and least in rainy season (277.0 min). Though no significant difference was observed in the relative time spent by Barbari goats on grazing activities during summer and winter season, they spent significantly more (p < 0.05) time during rainy season as compared to other two seasons. The preference of grazing goats for certain plant species in relation to others was evident with distinct seasonal and breed variations. DM intake (g/kg $BW^{075}$) varied significantly (p < 0.05) from season to season. Among the browse. L. leucocephala was prefered over D. nutan irrespective of breed over the seasons. There was no breed difference in DM intake, or proximate composition and nutrient digestibility of ingested herbage. The available nutrient content of ingested forage was found sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of adult goats for maintenance (NRC, 1981). The reconstituted 3-tier pasture dominated by plant species like L. leucocephala and Cenchrus species appear to have great potential to sustain the nutrient requirement of goats without adverse seasonal fluctuations in pasture quality.
