  • Mechanical seals are generally used in the fields of industries as sealing devices. The failure of mechanical seals like crack, leakage, breakage fast and severe wear, excessive torque, and squeaking result in big problems. For the development of monitoring system, this study was carried out to identify abnormal phenomina on alumina(AI $\_$2/ O /sub3/) seal ring and resin bonded carbon ring, and to propose the proper parameter for monitoring failure on mechanical seals. Sliding were tests are conducted at 12 experimental conditions that contains 3 different contact pressure and 4 surface conditions. Torque, temperature, and acoustic emission are measured. Optical microstructure and scanning electron microscopy are observed for the wear processing every 10 minute sliding at rotation speed of 1750 RPM.

  • Optical module package is a hermetic metal-ceramic package for carrying optical IC. In case of LD(laser diode) module, window is used for both the path of optical signal and hermetic sealing of package. So, window has the metallization pattern on the surface for brazing process with package wall. In this study, several method were investigated for metallization. Thin film, thick film and mixed method were used for fabrication of metallization pattern. After brazing process, hermeticity and adhesion strength were tested for characterization of metallization pattern.

  • The purpose of this descriptive in vitro study were to evaluate the enamel-resin interface of the preventive resin restoration with regard to etching patterns and resin-tag morphology by means of scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows; 1. Three basic etching patterns were appeared simultaneously in a same microscopic section, in concentration between 20-50% phosphoric acid. 2. In 35% orthorhosphoric acid group etched for 60 second, the etching pattern was most prominent and demonstrate closely interdigitated with enamel-resin interface without the evidence of microspace, and the resin tags were longest ranged from 10-15 um in length. 3. This pattern of interface could reduce the incidence of marginal leakage and 2ndary caries formation. 4, The preventive resin restoration could serve as sealing a questionable occlusal surface.

  • Devitrifing solder glasses in a specific group of glass ceramic materials are extensively used in hermetically sealing alumina electronics packages. Preferred frit glass compositions of this study consist of 37~40wt% PbO, 35~40wt% ZnO, 18~20wt% B2O3, 1~3wt% SiO2, 0~6wt% TiO2. The coated frit glasses crystallize during firing and form a strong hermetic seal. DTA and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize crystallization of the glass frit. Frit seal containing 2wt% TiO2 has crystallization temperature of 550~57$0^{\circ}C$ with surface nucleation. Frit seal containing 6wt% TiO2 has crystallization temperature of 515~5$25^{\circ}C$ with bulk nucleation, and the main crystalline phase was perovskite lead titanate having minus expansion coefficient. The average activation energy for the crystallization calculated from Ozawa equation was 65$\pm$10kcal/mol.

  • Silicone insulators have many advantages over porcelain insulators. Especially silicone insulators have good characteristics of impact hardness, surface insulation, ease of processing, mass productivity and don't have risk of bombardment and vandalism. Recently insulation part made by silicone are becoming widely used. In this paper we introduce the development of Sealing End for 132kV XLPE cable with silicone composite hollow insulator and the adoption of it to a actual transmission line in abroad. This paper contains of design procedure, structure, electrical performance of it.

  • PDP panels with MgO protective layer are manufactured by using the "all-in-vacuum" process we have established [1]. This is the process aiming to keep the MgO surface as clean as possible after the evaporation. The panels are evaluated in term of discharge voltage, aging time, luminance, luminous efficacy, discharge time-lag. It is confirmed that the "all-in-vacuum" process particularly improves the aging time, discharge voltage and the discharge time-lag.

  • In this research, properties of new crack repair materials using organic and inorganic composites (OAI) were investigated under various crack conditions. Especially, this study aims to develop new composites repair materials as needed to follow the crack and its repair method. Crack repair methods such as injection method and surface treatment repair method using self-healing capability for the practical industrial application were examined in comparison with normal crack repair method as a epoxy injection. From these results, it was confirmed that the sealing and injection effects through the cracks from field tests could be improved by OAI.

  • This paper presents the implementation of a crack tracking mobile robot. The crack tracking robot is built for tracking cracks on the pavement. To track cracks, crack must be detected by laser and camera sensors. Laser sensor projects laser on the pavement to detect the discontinuity on the surface and the camera captures the image to find the crack position. Then the robot is commanded to follow the crack. To detect crack position correctly, neural network is used to minimize the positional errors of the captured crack position obtained by transformation from 2 dimensional images to 3 dimensional images.

  • Microencapsulation of sodium ascorbate with cellulose acetate phthalate(CAP) by coacervation/ phase separation method were carried out. Various factors affecting microencapsulation, i.e., surfactant concentration. CAP concentration, stirring speed and treatment of spermaceti as a sealing agent were studied. Dissolution rate. particle size distribution, surface feature and stability test were investigated. CAP microcapsules prepared using 0.5% span 80 as a surfactant showed smooth and round surfaces. The release of sodium ascorbate was retarded by microencapsulation with CAP and by sealant treatment with spermaceti. When triturated with sodium bicarbonate, CAP microcapsules were more stable than unencapsulated sodium ascorbate under various RH conditions at $37^{\circ}C$.

  • Non-contact type mechanical face seals installed in mechanical systems prevent leakage of working fluid using thin working fluid film between stator and rotor. For that purpose, various kinds of surface profiles, grooves and conings have been applied on seal surfaces of stator and rotor to generate hydrodynamic and hydrostatic pressure. The thickness distribution of working fluid film is one of important factors which affect the working performances of mechanical face seal, and it is strongly affected by the surface height profiles of stator and rotor. Therefore, appropriate design of surface height profiles of stator and rotor is necessary to optimize the working performances and life of mechanical face seal. In this study, numerical analysis using finite volume method was conducted to estimate the working performances of wavy mechanical face seals which have 36 coning combinations. As results, minimum thickness of working fluid film, leakage volume of working fluid and friction torque in static equilibrium condition of mechanical face seal, and stiffness of working fluid film were obtained. The results show that the working performances of mechanical face seal were affected by the coning combinations which can change the thickness distribution of working fluid film and pressure distribution in sealing region of mechanical face seal.
