  • When a zinc-oxide eugenol type sealer was placed in root canals treated previously with calcium hydroxide, acceleration of its setting and the yellowish discoloration were observed clinically. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of calcium hydroxide-eugenol compound. Some physical properties of calcium hydroxide-eugenol compound were compared with a manufactured zinc-oxide eugenol based root canal sealer, Tubli-seal$^{(R)}$ in terms of water solubility, water sorption, film thickness and microleakage. Solubility and water sorption were determined by the use of the method described in American Dental Association Specification(ADAS) no. 57. Ten samples of each material were prepared into disks 20mm in diameter and 1.5mm in thickness. The samples were immersed in 50ml of distilled water at $37{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. The samples were then removed and placed in a desiccator. The values for solubility and water sorption were calculated using differences between the weights of same sample. Film thickness was determined by the use of the method described in ADAS no. 57 too. A small quantity of mixed cement was placed between two glass plates of which thickness was measured previously. 15Kg loading was applied and total thickness of the glass plates and the cement film was measured. The thickness difference was recorded as the material's film thickness. Microleakage was determined with a dye penetration method. Experimental materials were placed between the dentin surface of bovine tooth and the acrylic rod. These units were immersed in Pelican ink (W-Germany) for three days. Dye-penetrated dentin surfaces of bovine tooth were measured using the NIB Image 1.60 Macintosh program. The results are as follows: 1. Water solubility value of calcium hydroxide-eugenol compound (20.98${\pm}$2.94%) was statistically higher than those of Tubli-seal$^{(R)}$(2.52${\pm}$0.49%)(p<0.05). 2. Water sorption value of calcium hydroxide-eugenol compound (59.72${\pm}$17.75%) was statistically higher than those of Tubli-seal$^{(R)}$(3.15${\pm}$0.76%)(p<0.05). 3. Film thickness value of calcium hydroxide-eugenol compound (0.36${\pm}$0.03mm) was statistically higher than those of Tubli-seal$^{(R)}$(0.12${\pm}$0.1mm)(p<0.05). 4. Dye penetration value after 3 days-immersion of calcium hydroxide-eugenol compound(57.63${\pm}$25.85%) was statistically higher than those of Tubli-seal$^{(R)}$(28.05${\pm}$23.46%)(p<0.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of five obturation methods in conjunction with sealer. Fifty extracted upper and lower anterior teeth were selected and the access cavities were prepared lingually with a round bur. The working length was determined with a #15K file, and the root canals were instrumented with a #40K file 1mm short of the apical foramen. The apical third of root canal was flared by step-back technique and the coronal two thirds of root canal using #2 - 3 Gates Glidden drills. And then, the teeth were randomly assigned to five groups of 10 teeth each. A thin coat of Tubliseal was placed into the canal into the canal using the # 35 reamer and the canals were filled by lateral condensation, vertical condensation, ultrasonic activated lateral condensation, ULTRAFIL injecting, and McSpadden compaction methods. All teeth were stored in 100 % relative humidity at 31c for 48 hours. The roots were suspended in 2 % methylene blue solution for 48 hours, left to dry for 24 hours and then, half side of root was removed longitudinally using the fissure bur. A Boley gauge wes used to measure the distance, to the nearest 0.1mm, from the apical foramen to the most coronal level of dye penetration. The measurement of dye penetration was statistically compared by Duncan's multiple range test The results were as follows 1. Ultrasonic group showed the best sealing ability among the all experimental groups, but there were statistically no significant difference in the sealing ability between ultrasonic group and vertical condensation group. 2. There were no statistically significant difference in the sealing ability among the lateral, vertical, and ultrasonic groups. 3. McSpadden group showed the worst sealing ability among the all exprimental groups.

  • Crack sealing is a maintenance technique commonly used to prevent water and debris penetration and reduce future degradation in pavement. The conventional crack sealing operations are, however, dangerous, costly, and labor-intensive. Automating crack sealing will improve productivity and quality, and offer safety benefits by getting worker off the road. During the last two decades, several teleoperated and machine-vision assisted systems have been developed to automate the overall process of routing and sealing pavement cracks. However, the developed systems have not been commonly used in the construction sites because of the technical problems. Especially, the performance of end-effector, related to the productivity and quality improvement, is very important factor to improve the practical use of the developed systems. The main objective of this research is to develop an end-effector in automated pavement crack sealing machine and to analyze the technical feasibility of the developed end-effector.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adaptation of filling material to the dentinal walls of root canals with and without smear layer. Fifty extracted upper and lower anterior teeth were selected, and the root canals were instrumented with K - files 1mm short of the apical foramen by step - back method. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups of 25 each : in the group I, smear layers were not removed, and in the group II, smear layers were removed by 15% EDTA solution. Again the two groups 25 teeth were randomly divided into unfilled contol group and filling groups(lateral, ultrasonic, ULTRAFIL, McSpadden compaction group). Upon completion of root canal filling, the teeth were grooved on the both the labial and lingual surfaces and then split with mallet and chisel. Each specimens were examined with JSM - 840 Scanning Electron Microscope (JEOL., Japan). The results were as follows : 1. In the contol group, dentinal tubules of group I couldn't be distinguished in the canal wall, but those of group II appeared to be open and patent. 2. In the filling groups of group I, the tubular penetration of the sealer or gutta percha couldn't be seen, but in the filling groups of group II, it could be seen except McSpadden compaction group. 3. In the filling groups, ULTRAFIL group showed the best adaptation of filling material to root canal wall among the group I, and lateral and ultrasonic condensation group showed the best adaptation of filling material among the group II. McSpadden compaction group showed the worst adaptation in group I, II. 4. Generally, the group II showed better adapation of filling material to root canal wall than the group I.

  • Crack sealing is a maintenance procedure that is commonly used to reduce pavement degradation. If cracks in pavements are not sealed, surface water penetration can reduce the strength of the sub-base layers, which can result in increased deflections of the pavement. Reduced strength of the sub-base also accelerates the deterioration of the surface, due to development of greater cracking and potholes. Crack sealing is performed to reduce water and debris penetration, thereby helping to maintain pavement structural capacity and limiting future degradation. The process of sealing cracks in pavements is however dangerous, costly, and labor-intensive operation. Labor turnover and training are increasing problems related to crack sealing crews, and as traffic volumes increase. Automating crack sealing can reduce labor and road user costs, improve work quality, and decrease worker exposure to roadway hazards. The main objective of this research is to develop an automated system for sealing cracks in pavement. Extension of the algorithms and tools presented in this research is also recommended for future study.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the sealing ability of root canal obturation with or without the treatment of smear layer. Eighty extracted human teeth with one canal were selected Instrumentation was performed with crown-down technique. After instrumentation, root canals of the NaOCl group and NaOCl-6 group were irrigated with 3% NaOCl. EDTA group and EDTA-6 group were irrigated with 17% EDTA. Then all teeth were obturated using continuous wane obturation technique NaOCl group and EDTA group were immersed in methylene blue solution for 84hours. NaOCl-6 group and EDTA-6 group were immersed in methylene blue solution for 6months. The teeth were sectioned at 1.5 mn (Level 1), 3.0 mm (Level 2) and 4.5 mm (Level 3) from the root apex. The length of dye-penetrated inter-face and the circumferential length of canal at each level were measured using Sigma-Scan Pro 5.0. 1. The mean leakage ratio was decreased cervically. 2. NaOCl group showed higher mean leakage ratio than EDTA group at each level. But there was significant difference at level 1 only (p < 0.05). 3. NaOCl-6 group showed higher mean leakage ratio than EDTA-6 group at each level. But there was significant difference at level 1 only (p < 0.05). 4. NaOCl-6 group showed higher mean leakage ratio than NaOCl group at each level. But there was significant difference at level 1 only (p < 0.05). 5. EDTA-6 group showed higher mean leakage ratio than EDTA group at each level. But there was no significant difference. 6. In NaOCl group and NaOCl-6 group, scanning electron micrographs of tooth sections generally covered with smear layer. In EDTA group and EDTA-6 group, tooth sections showing the penetration of sealers to opened dentinal tubules. The results suggest that removal of smear layer was effective to reduce the apical microleakage of the root canal.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of heated spreader on the sealing ability of lateral condensation, compared with regular cold spreader. Forty two extracted human teeth with single canal were randomly placed into 3 experimental groups, and four additional teeth were used as positive and negative controls. Each group was prepared with Ni-Ti Profile #40 using step-down technique and obturated with standardized colored gutta-percha cone by standard(cold) lateral condensation technique, warm lateral condensation technique with Endotec and hot spreader soaked in glass bead sterilizer, each with Sealapex sealer. Control groups were not obturated, but prepared. After 2 days in 2% methylene blue, the teeth were invested and made into transparent resin blocks. And then, each block was sectioned horizontally with microtome at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 mm levels from the apex. The linear extent of dye penetration was examined with stereomicroscope at ${\times}$20 magnification. At each of 5 levels, ratio of the area of gutta-percha was obtained by calculating the area of gutta-percha to the total area of the canal. The data collected were then analyzed statistically using an analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Scheffe test. The results were as follows ; 1. All experimental groups produced the apical microleakage. 2. The mean leakage was 1.57${\pm}$0.76mm for cold spreader group, 0.86${\pm}$0.95mm for Endotec spreader group, and 0.64${\pm}$0.93mm for hot spreader group. The difference between hot spreader group and cold spreader group was statistically significant(p<0.05). 1. At the 1 mm level, the mean ratio of area of gutta-percha was 74.58${\pm}$13.15(%) for cold spreader group, 65.42${\pm}$14.62(%) for Endotec spreader group, and 80.72${\pm}$14.63(%) for hot spreader group. There was statistically significant difference between hot spreader group and Endotec spreader group(p<0.05). 2. At the 2mm level, the mean ratio of area of gutta-percha was 87.86${\pm}$11.22(%) for cold spreader group, 66.55${\pm}$14.02(%) for Endotec spreader group, and 92.93${\pm}$7.24(%) for hot spreader group. There was statistically significant difference between Endotec spreader group and other two spreader groups(p<0.05). 3. At the level 3, 4, 5 mm, there was no statistically significant difference between each group. Within the limits of the results of this experiment, warm lateral condensation technique with hot spreader soaked in a glass bead sterilizer demonstrated favorable apical sealing effect and improved density of gutta-percha mass. Thus, it is thought that this obturation technique is effective for clinical use and beneficial to reduce condensation forces, also economical and easy. Lateral condensation, Heated spreader, canal sealing, Microleakage.

  • We evaluated in vitro microleakage of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) powder with 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META) / methyl methacrylate (MMA) & tri-n-butylborane (TBB) resin as a retrograde filling material by using methylene blue dye method. Fifty-two single rooted, extracted teeth were instrumented and obturated with gutta percha and AH plus sealer. The apical 3mm of each root was resected and 3mm deep ultrasonic root end preparation was done. External surface of roots was coated with nail varnish. Prepared teeth were randomly divided into five groups; Negative control: completely covered with nail varnish; Positive control: coated with nail varnish except for apical foramen; Group 1 (retrofilled with Portland cement); Group 2 (retrofilled with MTA); Group 3 (retrofilled with MTA powder mixed with 4-META/MMA & TBB resin). Immediately after completion of root-end filling, all specimens were submerged in methylene blue dye for 72 hours in $37^{\circ}C$incubator. The roots were longitudinally sectioned and measured for extent of dye penetration by three different examiners under microscope (${\times}$10). The results were statistically analyzed using one way ANOVA and Turkey's HSD test. No leakage was evident in negative control and complete leakage in positive control group. Group 3 showed significantly less leakage than group 1 and 2 (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference between group 1 and 2 (p > 0.01). It was concluded that MTA powder with 4-META/MMA & TBB resin was excellent in reducing initial apical microleakage.
