The sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus is a commercially valuable aquaculture species in Korea. Aquaculture species require specific nursery culture conditions to increase survival and growth rates. Sea cucumbers hibernate during the high temperatures of summer and during the low temperatures of winter, and suboptimal temperature conditions decrease sea cucumber growth and survival rates. The natural South Korean environment is very unfavorable for culturing sea cucumber; therefore, developing a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) capable of breeding and growing sea cucumber year-round is necessary. The aim of this study was to investigate growth performance of juvenile sea cucumber in a RAS. Growth and survival rates of juvenile sea cucumber were high during our 24-week experiment. Sea cucumber survival rates were 87.8-93.3%, and specific growth rates were 0.4689-0.7846.
To determine the optimum light intensity for mass culture of the brackish-water cyclopoid copepod Paracyclopina nana, survival, growth, and productivity of the copepod were examined at several light intensities (0, 10, 100, 500, 1,000 lx). The survival rate of P. nana from nauplius to adult decreased with increasing light intensity. The highest survival rate was found under the dark condition, with 61.7% surviving; no significant difference was observed between 0 and 10 lx (51.7%) and the lowest survival rate was with 100 lx (26.7%). Survival rates at 500 and 1,000 lx were significantly lower in comparison with other conditions. The developmental period from nauplius to copepodid (5.8 days) and to adult (11.8 days) at 10 lx was significantly shorter than in the other treatments. Daily mean nauplius production of adult females over 7 days at 0, 10 and 100 lx was significantly higher than at 500 and 1,000 lx. In the 1,000 lx treatment, 99% of the adult females died on the $14^{th}$ day. The optimum light intensity for the mass culture of P. nana could be 10 lx, which had no adverse effects on survival, development, or reproduction.
The present study investigated survival and growth of the abalone, Haliotis discus hannai and sea cucumber, Stichopus japonicus co-cultured and supplied with abalone formula feed (AFF) and dry sea tangle (DST) in indoor tank. During the experimental period from April 20 to July 15 in 2011, we used abalone with shell length of $28.54{\pm}1.23mm$ and total weight of $2.92{\pm}0.26g$. The sea cucumber used in the experiment weighed $3.0{\pm}0.2g$ in wet weight. For the experiment, 3 types of feeds including AFF, DST and AFF-DST mixed (1:1) group were supplied to abalone and sea cucumber. During the experiment, survival of abalone reached over 97.0% and 87.0% for sea cucumber in three experimental tanks. Survival of the abalone was found to be higher in DST group, while it was lower among sea cucumber, although the survival was not significantly different among three experimental group. Growth of abalone fed with AFF was significantly higher, while the growth rate of sea cucumber was highest in the tank fed with AFF+DST mixed diet (P < 0.05).
To obtain the fundamental data for the mass seedling production of grunt, Hapalogenys nitens, we investigated the influence of salinity and cold water temperature on hatching and survival of eggs and growth and survival of larvae and fry. In regards to salinity, we surveyed the hatching rate and floating rate of fertilized eggs, the floating rate and survival rate of hatching larvae, and the survival and growth of fry. In respect to cold temperature, we investigated the influence of degree of daily temperature decrease, acute temperature shock, and slow temperature decreases on the survival, feeding and swimming activities of fry. In the salinity experiment, the hatching and floating rates of fertilized eggs, and the floating and survival rates of hatching larvae, were shown to be higher in seawater than in brackish water. Growth and survival of larvae and fry were not different between seawater (25~32 psu) and brackish water (5~20 psu), but were significantly lower in freshwater. In the cold-temperature test, three tests showed that rearing of fry in cold water and acutely decreasing water temperature to less than $10^{\circ}C$ reduced the survival, feeding and swimming activities of the fry. Therefore, we concluded that low salinity (less than 32 psu) could reduce the hatching rate and survival of eggs, but the growth and survival of fry were not influenced by salinity, and cold water (less than $10^{\circ}C$) decreased metabolism of grunt. During winter, we found a low-temperature limit at $8^{\circ}C$.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a hands-on training regarding maritime safety including abandon ship and fire-fighting as related to sea survival, fire-fighting knowledge and emergency response leadership in seafarers engaged on a seagoing ship. The study was conducted with a nonequivalent control group pre-posttest design. Two hundred-sixty-six participants were assigned to either the experimental group(128) or control group(138). The hands-on training regarding maritime safety included sea survival and fire fighting drill, and it was implemented with the experimental group for two days from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. Data was analyzed using chi-square, t-test and ANCOVA by using IBM SPSS Statistics(version 24) program. The experimental group who had the hands-on training showed significantly higher sea survival knowledge(F=902.32, p<.001), shipboard fire-fighting knowledge(F=1013.76, p<.001) and emergency response leadership(F=1802.62, p<.001) for maritime safety compared with the control group who had traditional education. The results indicate that a hands-on training is an effective teaching method to improve sea survival, fire-fighting knowledge and emergency response leadership in seafarers engaged. Further study is needed to identify the effect of a hands-on training regarding maritime safety according to the environmental changes of seafarers.

We studied two research items that can be undetermined issues in the artificial seed production of the Japanese scallops, Patinopecten yessoensis, batch-specific quality of the reproductive outputs and nursery acclimation, in the embayed waters of Yangyang, Gangwon, Korea. The first batch of the spawner showed better results in terms of survival, growth, and resistance against parasitic ciliate infection over the second batch that was obtained in 5 days after first batch from the same spawner. The early attached spats directly placed in the farming ground (the unacclimated) were resistant against the water current of the open environment, by showing survival of about 80% for a month, a normal survival compared with other results. However, the spat survival during the nursery acclimation was significantly lowered in comparison with that in the unacclimated condition (P<0.01). We discussed the research results of the two items, particularly focusing on their availability for mass seed production for aquaculture in the Korean coastal waters of the East Sea (Sea of Japan).

The sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus, is becoming an important aquaculture species in China, Japan and Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the biological performance of a tubular type of subsurface cage for sea cucumber grow-out by in-situ tests. The cage structure was constructed of PP (polypropylene) frames and PP tubes (${\phi}130mm{\times}24pieces$). A set of tests were conducted at a depth of 15 m near Seosaeng, Ulsan, Korea for 295 days (23 July, 2012 to 13 May, 2013). A total of 155 sea cucumbers were used and fed a mixed diet containing mud, mineral, wheat, fish meal, etc (3% of their body weight). At the end of the experiments, sea cucumber showed a higher survival rate in feed shelter (77.14%) rather than no feed shelter (64.71%). The specific growth rate (SGR) of sea cucumbers in feed condition (0.04% $day^{-1}$) was higher than that of no feed culture animals (-0.49% $day^{-1}$) during total experimental periods. The result was able to find a no significance difference in survival rate but a significance difference in SGR under feed and no feed treatments.

The observed external injury, movement and survival rate according to storage and recovery of the juvenile sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus(wet weight $1.0{\pm}0.2g$). The investigated application possibility of external injury(grade I~IV) and movement variation(buccal tentacle, motion, obversion, movement) for estimate of survival rate. The survival rate was observed through the recovery after storage of the sea cucumber in various water temperature(10, 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$) and hours(3, 6, 12, 24 hour). Grade of external injury lower in the 24 hour experiment group of $20^{\circ}C$ water temperature and 12 hour experiment group of $25^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Buccal tentacle and movement strong related survival rate and external injury. In the case of $20^{\circ}C$ water temperature, survival rate was observed decrease 24 hours experiment. $25^{\circ}C$ water temperature was high to 6 hours but 12 hours experiment group observed decrease of the survival rate. The lethal time(LT10) of the juvenile sea cucumber was 15.73 hours($20^{\circ}C$) and 5.57 hours($25^{\circ}C$). The results of this study provided various measurement method of survival rate according to transportation of the juvenile sea cucumber for release.

Effects of artificial releases of sea cucumber around the marine ranching area in Jeollanam-do were showed very efficient by the released good seeds(total weight, 3.2g) in 'Wolhang', compared with those in 'Hwatae'. The survival rates were the higher in 'Wolhang' by 66.0% than in 'Hwatae' by 27.0%. The results indicates that the releasing effect of sea cucumber depended on the releas size. To analyze the productivity we investigated the growth and survival rates of sea cucumber according to the releasing area. Our result showed that the growth rate and survival rate was higher in 'Hwatae' than other areas. In 'Hwatae', the growth rate and survival rate were 6.2g and 32.1% respective. The results indicates that if the food supply is continued, although proceeding contamination the productivity of sea cucumber increased. Therefore, in order to enhancement and conservation of resource, bottom of fish cage should consider to the utilization.
To investigate conditions for the survival and growth of Dungeness crab zoeae in situ, spatial and monthly changes of sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface salinity (SSS), Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ (Chl ${\alpha}$), and zooplankton biomass were measured in four transects: upper Chatham, Icy Strait, Cross Sound, and Icy Point in southeastern Alaska from May to September, 1997-2004. Monthly mean SST was coldest in May, increased throughout the summer months, and decreased in September. SST was coldest in the Cross Sound transect, intermediate in the upper Chatham and Icy Strait transects, and warmest in the Icy Point transect. SSS of northern stations in the upper Chatham and Icy Strait transects decreased throughout the summer months and increased in September, while that of other transects did not vary. Monthly mean Chl ${\alpha}$ was highest in May and decreased thereafter. Chl ${\alpha}$ in the upper Chatham and Icy Strait transects were relatively higher from May through September than those in the Cross Sound and Icy Point transects. Mean zooplankton biomass was highest in the Icy Strait transect in May and lowest in the Icy Point transect in September. This research suggests that oceanographic conditions during the season of Dungeness crab zoeae in southeastern Alaska may not constrain the survival and growth of Dungeness crab zoeae.
