To investigate characteristics of water masses and current structures around Noto Peninsula located in south-east coastal region of the East Sea, observation results of CREAMS (Circulations Research of the East Asian Marginal Seas) cruise and data report of oceanographic observation (Japan Meteorological Agency) in June, 1995 and 1996 were used. Water mass showing characteristics of Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) exists over the continental shelf. The depth is shallower than 200m and its width and thickness are 190km and 200m, respectively. Minimum level of dissolved oxygen occurred at the layers of maximum salinity. In the current structure, a noteworthy phenomenon is that the positions of the high-salinity water (more than 34.6 psu) match well with the distributions of the southwestward flow. In June of 1995 and June of 1996, a southwestward flow were separated into two parts along line C and line G. Current directions derived from the temperature and salinity match well with the distributions of the geostrophic currents in the vertical sections. The isothermal lines and the isohaline, which exist horizontally along the coastal area of the Japan, change abruptly at the frontal area of the Noto Peninsula, then turn toward the center of the East Sea. The dynamic depth anomalies centering around the region far northwest of the Noto Peninsula were relatively high, compared to those of other regions. The isopycnic surface (sigma-t, 25.8) existed near the surface in the central part of the East Sea, but, at the depth of 100m, the isopycnic surface was found in the coastal waters.
This study analyzed atmospheric conditions for the convergent cloud band (Cu-Cb line) in developing stage and its neighbouring convections formed over the East Sea on 1 February 2012, by using synoptic, satellites data, and WRF numerical simulation output of high resolution. In both satellite images and the WRF numerical simulation outputs, the Cu-Cb line that stretched out toward northwest-southeast was shown in the East Sea, and cloud lines of the L mode were aligned in accordance with the prevailing surface wind direction. However, those of the T mode were aligned in the direction of NE-SW, which was nearly perpendicular direction to the surface winds. The directions of the wind shear vectors connecting top winds and bottom winds of the moist layers of the L mode and the T mode were identical with those of the cloud lines of L mode and T mode, respectively. From the WRF simulation convection circulations with a convergence in the lower layer of atmosphere and a divergence above 1.5 km ASL (Above Sea Level) were identified in the Cu-Cb line. A series of small sized vortexes (maximum vortex: $320{\times}10^{-5}s^{-1}$) of meso-${\gamma}$-scale formed by convergences was found along the Cu-Cb lines, suggesting that Cu-Cb lines, consisting of numerous convective clouds, were closely associated with a series of the small vortexes. There was an absolute unstable layer (${\partial}{\theta}/{\partial}z$ < 0) between sfc and ~0.3 km ASL, and a stable layer (${\partial}{\theta}/{\partial}z$ > 0) above ~2 km ASL over the Cu-Cb line and cloud zones. Not only convectively unstable layers (${\partial}{\theta}_e/{\partial}z$ < 0) but also neutral layers (${\partial}{\theta}_e/{\partial}z{\approx}=0$) in the lower atmosphere (sfc~1.5 km ASL) were scattered around over the cloud zones. Particularly, for the Cu-Cb line there were convectively unstable layers in the surface layer, and neutral layers (${\partial}{\theta}_e/{\partial}z{\approx}=0$) between 0.2 and ~1.5 km ASL over near the center of the Cu-Cb line, and the neutralization of unstable layers came from the release of convective instability.

Saemangeum coastal area is being constructed the 33km sea dike and 40,000ha reclamation area. The purpose of this study is to find the residual circulations in spring before and after the dike construction by a robust diagnostic and prognostic numerical model. Heat flux at the sea surface in May was adopted on the basis of the daily inflow of solar radiation at the earth surface, assuming an average atmospheric transmission and no clouds, as a function of latitude and time of year(George L.P.,J. E. William,1990). The discharge from the Geum, the Mankyung and the Dongjin rivers was adopted on the basis of experience formula of river flow in May(The M. of C.,Korea, 1993). Water temperature and salinity along the open boundaries are obtained from the results of field observations. The results of spring of the residual flow in the Saemangeum coastal area by a prognostic numerical model lead to the following conclusions: Water temperature in spring is the highest, salinity is the lowest and density is the lowest at the upper layer near the coast after the dike construction. The flow pattern at the upper layer during spring is anti-clockwise circulation between Wi and Shinsi islands. The flow pattern at the lower layer is clockwise circulation between Wi and Shinsi islands.

The aim of this study knows to occurrence characteristics and monthly transition of foreign marine debris by changing in the marine environment for the national marine debris monitoring areas in the west coastal area. The Jeju Island (5,112) had the highest number for foreign marine debris flowed in the coast. Many areas in the next were surveyed by Hajo Island (1,967), Imja Island (507). Plastic bottles were the most common type to 2,925 piece of the whole collection. Then, the monthly occurrence amount was concentrated in July, September. At this time, analysis results of the marine environment are as follows: The sea surface wind of southerly or southeasterly were predominated. In addition, the sea surface circulations were dominated by inflow of seawater southward along the China Coast and northward from the East China Sea.
Water masses and circulations around Korean peninsula are briefly described based on recent studies. The results of theses studies are discussed from the physical point of view. Oceanic conditions in this region are largely due to the roles played by the Tsushima Warm Current, an onshore extension of the Kuroshio, and local conditions such as wind, surface heat flux and fresh water input etc. To the south and west of Korea, the northern/western border of the Tsushima Warm Current Water is roughly the line joining Taiwan and Cheju island. In summer, it is affected by large amount of fresh water discharged from the Changjiang and in winter, an intrusion of this water into the Yellow Sea is induced by the prevailing northwesterly monsoon wind. To the east of Korea, the Tsushima Warm Current Water presents roughly south of the line joining the wast coast of Korea near 37-38$^{\circ}$N and Tsugaru-Soya Straits in the northern Japan. But this situation, together with those in deeper layers, may greatly be changed by winter atmospheric conditions (wind and surface heat flux). The seas around Korea are not yet physically well understood and many problems wait physical explanations. Some problems, along with personal views of them, are mentioned.
The evolution of intricate and striking patterns of suspended sediments (SS), which are created by certain physical dynamics in the East China and Yellow Seas, has been investigated using satellite ocean color imageries and vertical profiles of particle attenuation and backscattering coefficients. The structure of these patterns can reveal a great deal about the process underlying their formation. Sea surface temperature (SST) analyzed from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) thermal infrared data were used to elucidate the physical factors responsible for the evolution of suspended sediment patterns in the East China Sea. The concomitant patterns of suspended sediments were tracked from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) ocean color data. The detailed examination about these patterns gave birth to the definition of the evolution of suspended sediments (SS) into four stages: (1) Youth or Infant stage, (2) Younger stage, (3) Mature stage, and (4) Old stage. We describe about the three directional forces of the tidal currents, ocean warm currents and estuarine circulations that lead to occurrence of various stages of the evolution of suspended sediments that increase turbidity at high levels through out the water column of the inner and outer shelf areas during September to April. The occurrence of these four stages could be repeatedly observed. In contrast, vertical profiles of the particle attenuation ($c_{p}$) and backscattering ($b_{bp}$) coefficients displayed obvious patterns of the propagation of suspended sediment plume from the southwestern coastal sea that leads to eventual collision with the massive sediment plume originating from the Yangtze banks of the East China Sea.
We simulated and compared present and future ocean circulation in the East China Sea using an East Asia Regional Ocean model. Mean climate states for 1990~1999 and 2030~2039 were used as surface conditions for simulations of present and future ocean circulation, which were derived from the simulations of three different global climate models, ECHAM5-MPI, GFDL-CM2.0 and MIROC3.2_hires, for the 20th century and those of 21st century as projected by the IPCC SRES A1B. East Asia Regional Ocean model simulated the detailed patterns of temperature, salinity and current fields under present and future climate conditions and their changes instead of the simple structures of global climate models. To some extent, there are consistent ocean circulation changes derived from the three pairs corresponding to the global climate model in so much as the temperature increases not only in winter but summer at both the surface and bottom and that temperature and salinity changes are prominent near the Chinese coast and in the Changjiang bank. However, the simulated circulations are different among each other depending on the prescribed atmospheric conditions not only under present climate but also with regard to future climate conditions. There is not a coincident tendency in ocean circulation changes between present and future simulations derived from the three pairs. This suggests that more simulations with different pairs are needed.
Coastal circulations during the (surface condition of an) idealized cold-air outbreak are numerically investigated with two-dimensional, non-hydrostatic model in which a constant bottom-slope exists. The atmospheric forcing during a cold-air outbreak is incorporated as the surface cooling and the wind stress. When the offshore angle of the wind-stress vector, defined as the angle measured from the alongshore axis, is smaller than 45 degrees, a strong downwelling circulation develops near the coast. A sharp density front, which separates the vertically homogeneous region from the offshore stratified region, is formed near the coast and propagates offshore with time. Onshore side of the density front, small-scale circulation cells which are aligned in the direction perpendicular to the bottom begin to develop as the near-coast homogeneous region broadens. The surface cooling enhances greatly the development of the surface mixed layer by convective motions due to hydrostatic instability. The convective motions reach far below the hydrostatically unstable layer which is attached to the surface. The small-scale circulation cells are appreciably modified by the convetion cell and the density front develops far offshore compared to the case of no surface cooling. As to the effect of the bottom slope, the offshore distance of the density front increases (decreases) as the bottom slope decreases (increases), which results from the fact that the onshore volume-transport (Ekman transport) of the low-density upper seawater remains almost constant when the wind-stress is maintained constant. It is shown that the bottom slope is an essential factor for the formation of both the density front and the alongshore current when the surface cooling is the only forcing.

The land reclamation area of Saemangeum(Kunsan) is located between 126$^{\circ}$10' E~126$^{\circ}$50' E and 35$^{\circ}$35' N~356$^{\circ}$05'N at the western coast of the Korean peninsula. The are many small islands including extensive areas of semi-diurnally flooded and dewatered tidal flats. The reclamation area of Saemangeum has a range of 5.6m spring tide and the maximum tidal current speed is about 1.41m s-1 in ordinary spring tide. Most of the sediments deposited on the tidal flats are transported from the Geum river, the Manjyung river and The Dongjin river. The soil in this area consists of silty sand with the depth of 10m to 30m . The wind in winter is strong from the direction of northwest. In the past twenty years, land reclamation projects for agricutural purpose or industrial cocmplex have been mostly implemented along the western coast of Korea. Saemangeum coastal area is being constructed the33km sea dike and 40, 100ha reclamation area. The major positive sea surface temperature(SST) anomalies not only occur in the region with the most moisture increase, but also in the flank of the area with sinking motion in the Subtropics. As the large amount of water vapor has been increased by the SST anomaly, the increased of the SST is expected to destabilize the air and leads under moist adiabatic unstable conditions, to an enhanced development of moisture cluster. The 4.0 K change of SST causes the positive difference of Brightness Temperature(TB) of about 10.0k for water vapor channels of TOVS over the north eastern and central tropical Pacific Ocean, but the negative difference of TB of about 7.5 K is shifted southward and southeastward to Southern Pacific Ocean along the equator correspondingly. The difference of the TBs for IR water vapor channel $11(7.3{\mu}m)$ and $12(6.7{\mu}m)$ of TOVS indicative of the moisture distribution during two time periods(January 1983 and 1984), leads us to infer significant changes in the entire tropospheric circulations and the dynamic processes over the Pacific Ocean.
