  • The yeongok stream originates at the natural park, Mt. O-dae and flows to the East Sea of korea, normally maintaining I or II grade of water quality and its average water flux is 352,100 ㎥/d. However, the typhoon 'Rusa', which occured on 31 August 2002, changed its watercourse and configuration, and the ecosystem was deeply damaged. Moreover, the hydrological characteristics were once more transformed, and the ecosystem was secondarily damaged during repair-work of destroyed bridges and elevations. After the flood disaster, the species diversity diminished 17% for attached diatom and 44% for aquatic animals. However, the earth and sand, dug from river bed during intensive repair-work throughout the entire stream, made diversity drop to 32% for the diatom and the aquatic animals were wiped out. Especially, fishes were totally destroyed except for some species such as Moroco oxycephalus in the upper stream. The yeongok stream has little contamination source and short water residence time due to the short length and rapid slope, and consequently a temporary deterioration of water quality caused by repair-work may be rapidly recovered, but it needs a long time to restore the damaged ecosystem.

  • Field observations were used to study the characteristics and influence of groundwater level fluctuations on vegetation development on the natural beach of a sandy barrier island, in the Nakdong River estuary. The spatial/temporal fluctuations of the groundwater level and the interactions with the external forces (weather, ocean wave and tide) were analyzed. The results indicated that when it rains the groundwater level rises. During summer, when precipitation intensity is greater than 20 mm/hour, it rose rapidly over 20 cm. Subsequently, it fell gradually during periods of no precipitation. Seasonal characteristics indicated that the groundwater level was high during the summer rainy season and tended to fall in the winter dry season. The time-averaged groundwater level, observed from the four observations over 3 years (2012-2014), was about 1.47 m, higher than mean sea level (M.S.L.). It was shown that the average annual groundwater level rises toward the land rather than showing intertidal patterns observation. Differences in the presence or absence of a coastal sand dunes affected the progress of vegetation. In other words, in environments of saltwater intrusion where the groundwater level varies, dependent on the distance from the shoreline and bottom slope, sand dunes can be provided to affect soil conditions and groundwater, so that vegetation can be grown reliably.

  • This study estimated the daily maximum snow depth using the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model in Korean Peninsula. First, the optimal ANN model structure was determined through the trial-and-error approach. As a result, daily precipitation, daily mean temperature, and daily minimum temperature were chosen as the input data of the ANN. The number of hidden layer was set to 1 and the number of nodes in the hidden layer was set to 10. In case of using the observed value as the input data of the ANN model, the cross validation correlation coefficient was 0.87, which is higher than that of the case in which the daily maximum snow depth was spatially interpolated using the Ordinary Kriging method (0.40). In order to investigate the performance of the ANN model for estimating the daily maximum snow depth of the ungauged area, the input data of the ANN model was spatially interpolated using Ordinary Kriging. In this case, the correlation coefficient of 0.49 was obtained. The performance of the ANN model in mountainous areas above 200m above sea level was found to be somewhat lower than that in the rest of the study area. This result of this study implies that the ANN model can be used effectively for the accurate and immediate estimation of the maximum snow depth over the whole country.

  • A recent dramatic increase of natural hazards in the Korean peninsular (KP) due to typhoons have raised necessities for the accurate typhoon prediction. Ieodo ocean research station (IORS) has been constructed in June 2003 at the open ocean where typhoons pass frequently, aiming to observe typhoons before the landfall to the KP and hence to improve the prediction skill. This paper investigates the importance of measurements at the IORS in the typhoon research and forecast. Analysis of the best track data in the N. W. Pacific shows that about one typhoon passes over the IORS per year on the average and 54% of the KP-landfall typhoons during 59 years (1950-2008) passed by the IORS within the range of the 150-km radius. The data observed during the event of typhoons reveals that the IORS can provide useful information for the typhoon prediction prior to the landfall (mainland: before 8-10 hrs, Jeju Island: before 4-6 hrs), which may contribute to improving the typhoon prediction skill and conducting the disaster prevention during the landfall. Since 2003, nine typhoons have influenced the IORS by strong winds above 17m/s. Among them, the typhoon Maemi (0314) was the strongest and brought the largest damages in Korea. The various oceanic and atmospheric observation data at the IORS suggest that the Maemi (0314) has kept the strong intensity until the landfall as passing over warm ocean currents, while the Ewiniar (0603) has weakened rapidly as passing over the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water (YSBCW), mainly due to the storm's self-induced surface cooling. It is revealed that the IORS is located in the best place for monitering the patterns of the warm currents and the YSBCW which varies in time and space.

  • Forest fire has a number of variables and since the effects of wind fields are bigger than any other variables, it is essential to know wind direction and velocity for the forest fire extinguishing techniques and the prediction of fire spread. With regards to the local area that has a high chance of forest fire, the data from meteorological observatory in the area is used for the estimation of wind velocity. It is relatively easy to obtain automatic weather station (AWS) data which are available for the whole nation. There is a chance that the data from the weather station may be different with the actual data at the mountain areas. In this study simply shaped hills (Sae-byeol hill of Jeju Island and port Ma-geum in An-myeon Island in the sea side) were selected as the experimental locations to minimize the distortion of the wind field by the adjacent geographic features. Spot measurements and analysis of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the given geographic features were conducted to examine and compare their consistency. As a conclusion It is possible to predict wind patterns in these simple locations.

  • Wireless sensor network system is expected to get high attention in research for now and future owing to the advanced hardware development technology and its various applicabilities. Among variety of sensor network systems, the seashore and marine sensor network, which are extended to get sampling of marine resources, environmental monitoring to prevent disaster and to be applied to the area of sea route guidance. For these marine applications to be available, however, the provision of precise location information of every sensor nodes is essential. In this paper, the sequential localization algorithm for obtaining the location information of marine sensor nodes. The sequential localization is done with the utilization of a small number of beacon nodes along the seashore and gets the location of nodes by controling the sequences of localization and also minimizes the error accumulation. The key idea of this algorithm for localization is that the localization priority of each sensor nodes is determined by the number of reference nodes' information. This sequential algorithm shows the improved error performance and also provide the increased coverage of marine sensor network by enabling the maximum localization of sensor nodes as possible.

  • Airborne electromagnetics (AEM) is a useful tool for investigating volcanic structures because it can survey large and inaccessible areas. Disadvantages include lower accuracy and limited depth of investigation. The Grounded Electrical Source Airborne Transient Electromagnetic(GREATEM)survey system was developed to increase the depth of investigation possible using AEM. The method was tested in a survey at Mount Bandai in north-eastern Japan. Mount Bandai is an andesitic stratovolcano that rises 1819m above sea level. An eruption in July 1888 left a hoof-shaped collapsed wall in its northern crater and avalanche debris at its base. Previous surveys of Mount Bandai allow for comparisons of data on its structure and collapse mechanism as obtained by GREATEM and other geophysical methods. The results show resistive structures in recent volcanic cones and conductive structures in the collapsed-crater area. Conductive areas around the collapsed wall correspond to an alteration zone resulting from hydrothermal activity, supporting the contention that a major cause of the collapse associated with the 1888 eruption was hydrothermal alteration that structurally weakened the interior of the volcanic edifice.

  • This study compared and analyzed the change of air consumption according to water depth with human characteristics and theoretical values. The experimental results are as follows. First, subjects A and B showed similar rise rates depending on the water depth. Second, subject C had a significantly higher rate of increase in air consumption at 25m underwater because the body responded sensitively to deep water pressure, which increased air consumption because breathing was faster than other participants. Third, the subjects D and E showed significantly lower overall air consumption. D and E were 37 and 35 years of age, respectively, the youngest, strongest and most experienced in deep sea diving at the time of military service. Fourth, the average air consumption per minute of the test subjects increased from 5m in water to 1.45 times, 10m in water to 1.85 times, and 20m in water to 2.8 times. This seems to be a result of different experiences, physical fitness, the degree of adaptation of the body to underwater, and different breathing techniques. Lastly, the difference between the experimental average value and the theoretical value appears to be the result of using more or less air than the theoretical value depending on the experiences and physical strength of each of the 5 rescuers, the degree of adaptation of the body underwater, and the method of underwater breathing.

  • A localized torrential rainfall and flash floods which are more frequently occurred by extraordinary atmospheric phenomena and rising sea surface temperature require more hydrological data collecting and analysis for small watershed. Urban watershed hydrological data monitoring system is needed because of big flood potential damage and lack of urban watershed hydrological data. Therefore, Urban Flood Disaster Management Research Center operates small experimental catchments(Sinnae1, Gunja, and Children's Park) observing and analyzing hydrological data(rainfall, stage, and discharge). In this study, the discharge of combined sewage for Gunja experimental drainage is analyzed with weekly data and day of the week data. Through several analyses in analyzing the urban runoff characteristics and managing the urban sewage system, direct runoff is calibrated and verified by the estimated values of rainfall-runoff model(SWMM).

  • In this study, shallow-water design waves are calculated for the return period of 10, 20, 30, and 50 years, based on the extreme value analysis of the wave measurement data at Gangneung beach. These values are compared with the results of SWAN simulation with the boundary condition of the deep-water design waves of the corresponding return periods at the Gangneung sea area provided by the Fisheries Agency (FA, 1988) and Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI, 2005). It is found that the shallow-water wave heights at Gangneung beach calculated by the deep-water design waves were significantly less than the observation data. As the return period becomes higher, the significant wave heights obtained by the extreme value analysis becomes higher than those computed by SWAN with the deep-water design waves of the corresponding return periods. KORDI computed the hindcast wave data from January 2004 to August 2008 by WAM with a finer-grid mesh system than those of previous studies. Comparisons of the wave hindcast results with the wave observation show that the reproducibility of the winter-season storm wave was considerably improved compared to the hindcast data from 1979 to 2003. Hereafter, it is necessary to carry out hindcast wave data for the years before 2004 using WAM with the finer-grid mesh system and to supplement the deep-water design wave.
