  • To understand the vertical structure of ocean currents from raw data observed by lowered-ADCP (LADCP), these data require post-processing. Data were processed using Krahman's version 10.8 processing software based on Matlab. It is estimated the influence of auxiliary data affecting the processed current structure. The bottom-tracked velocities and the GPS information significantly contribute the offset on reference velocities in the bottom layer and barotropic ones in the middle layer, respectively. Good quality data can be obtained when LADCP is least tilted in pitch and roll during observation. In situ application of LADCP to the (northward) volume transports of Kuroshio in the East China Sea proved to be 24.8. Sv (= $1{\times}10^6m^3s^{-1}$) in October 2007, and 28.2 Sv in June 2008, respectively. The volume transport is relatively large over the continental slope when compared to the shelf or the deep sea.

  • In order to effective manage the construction, disaster prevention plan and the harbor tranquility control, meteorological and sea-state characteristics around Cheju Island have been analyzed. Using results and damage examples of the port facilities under severe sea conditions, a reasonable construction control plan considering the regional characteristics of the sea-state and winds was proposed. That is, in northern part of Cheju Island, the construction work is affected mainly by the winter storms, while the typhoon mainly affects the southern part port facilities during summer to Autumn. Considering their typical characteristics, it is strongly suggested that the main construction work should be carried out during April to July in the northern part, and it should be made during October to next July in the southern part of the island. A permeable TTP mounded breakwater was constructed to protect severe waves as a temporal structure under the long-term development plan in Sogipo port. The transmission characteristics of the structure was discussed using the experimental results. The results show that the transmission coefficient $K_{t}$ is over 20% of incident waves, which cause many problems in the cargo handling in relation to harbor tranquility. In conclusion, this kind of permeable structure can be used only as a temporal structure for the disaster prevention under the construction process. It causes many problems in harbor tranquility if it is used as a permanent harbor structures.s.

  • In order to establish annual variations in the marine ecosystem of the East China Sea, suspended solids (SSs) and particulate organic carbon (POC) were extensively investigated in the northern part of the East China Sea from August 2003 to April 2008. Surface SS concentrations showed large spatial variations in spring and fall, but not in summer. Surface SS concentrations in spring were lower than those in summer and fall. In summer, SSs discharged from Changjiang were mostly deposited in the coastal areas and did not reach our study area which was located about 260 km from the river mouth. High SS concentrations were observed near the bottom, which resulted from resuspension of bottom sediments by the bottom currents. Surface POC concentrations did not exhibited large seasonal variations. Phytoplankton biomass was a main factor controlling surface POC concentrations. POC/chlorophyll ratios showed large seasonal variations, with maximum numbers in summer. POC/PON ratios were higher in summer than the Redefied ratio (6.6), while they were lower in spring and fall. In summer, higher POC/chlorophyll and POC/PON ratios were probably attributed to the high phytoplankton mortality caused by nutrient depletion in surface waters.

  • Due to the natural increase of human population and the concentration of industrial complexes to coastal area, the uses of nearshore area were increased drastically, and the tendency will not stop for a while. Therefore, the loss of human life and property damages of the present days for a disaster of the same magnitude should be heavy as compared to those of the past. For the better utilization of the sea and the prevention of the frequent marine natural and man-made disaster, and for the preparedness for the ocean pollutions, through ocean researches are required. the circulation, tidal currents, storm surges, sea surface wind, waves and sea fogs of the Yellow Sea should be investigated first from the oceanographic point of view, and then the dispersion and diffusion of spilled oil and pollutants, beach erosion, red tide, and longterm sea level oscillations can be studied. International cooperation is crucial for the investigation of the sea because of the temporal and geographic scales of the oceanic phenomina.

  • In order to improve navigational safety of ships, an ocean wave prediction model of high precision within a short time, dealing with multi-directional random waves from the information of the sea surface winds encountered at the planned ship's course, was introduced for construction of ocean wave forecasting system on the ship. In this paper, we investigated a sea disaster occurred by a stormy weather in the past. We analyzed the sea surface wind first and then carried out ocean wave hindercasting simulations according to the routes the sunken vessel. From the result of this study, we concluded that the sea disaster was caused by rapidly developed iou pressure system Okhotsk Sea and the predicted values by the third generation wave prediction model(WAM) was agreed well with the observed significant wave height, wave period, and directional wave spectrum. It gives a good applicability for construction of a practical on-board calculation system.

  • Sea level rise and increase of the typhoon/hurricane intensity due to global warming have threaten coastal areas for residential and industrial and have been widely studied. In this study we showed our recent efforts on sea wind which is one of critical factors for safe maritime traffic and prediction for storm surges and waves. Currently, most of numerical weather models in korea do not have sufficient spatial and temporal resolutions, therefore we set up a find grid(about 9km) sea wind prediction system that predicts every 12 hours for three day using Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF). This system covers adjacent seas around korean peninsula Comparisons of two observed data, Ieodo Ocean Research station(IORS) and Yellow Sea Buoy(YSB), showed reasonable agreements and by data assimilation we will improve better accurate sea winds in near future.

  • Marine disaster, such as 'the sinking of the Sewol ferry', on the ocean needs emergency communication with land post and Rescue services. Especially, It needs of emergency comomunication system has increased in Korea peninsula with the sea on three side. The system will be more fully equipped to deal with disasters linked to communication so alone sailing ship is at sea. Research is needed on communication links to submarines operated by submarine to sink a ship, as well as immersion in the sea with. And it is necessary in the study of the land in preparation for the emergency disaster ship and submarine communication links for offshore and subsea oil and associated communication systems. Will be studied in preparation for the communication protocols and emergency and disaster location and land the plane or for a career in the satellite systems are linked through this. It is necessary for this purpose is research on the integrated emergency disaster communication ecosystem.

  • In order to understand the variation of ENSO-related oceanic environments in the tropical and North Pacific Ocean, spatio-temporal variations of sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) and sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) are analyzed from distributions of complex empirical orthogonal functions (CEOF). Correlations among warm pool variation, southern oscillation index, and ocean surface currents were also examined with respect to interannual variability of the warm pool in western tropical Pacific. Spatio-temporal distributions of the first CEOF modes for SSTA and SSHA indicate that their variabilities are associated with ENSO events, which have a variance over 30% in the North Pacific. The primary reasons for their variabilities are different; SST is predominantly influenced by the change of barrier layer thickness, while SSH fluctuates with the same phase as propagation of an ENSO episode in the zonal direction. Horizontal boundary of warm pool area, which normally centered around $149^{\circ}E$ in the tropics, seemed to be expanded to the middle and eastern tropical regions by strong zonal currents through the mature phase of an ENSO episode.
