We researched the mechanism on th flucturain of Bottom Cold Water in the western channel of Korea Strait, using 13 years(1981~1933) oceanographic data of FRDA. The bottom cold water in the western channel appears more often in summer and fall than in winter and spring, and its year-to-year variation of temperature is very large. Such variation seems to be closely related with the variations of cold waters in the subsurface layer of the southwestern East Sea. According to the longitudinal temperature distribution along the korean southeastern coast, a density difference occurs all the time at the still deepth between the western channel and the southwestern East Sea. Thus, it is inferred that the cold waters would intrude into the western channle form the subsurface layer in the southwestern East Sea as a density-driven current, and it intensity depends upon the density difference.
The seismic data quality of marine geological and engineering survey deteriorates because of the sea swell. We often conduct a marine survey when the swell height is about 1 ~ 2 m. The swell effect correction is required to enhance the horizontal continuity of seismic data and satisfy the resolution less than 1 m. We applied the swell correction to the 8 channel high-resolution airgun seismic data and 3.5 kHz subbottom profiler (SBP) data. The correct sea bottom detection is important for the swell correction. To detect the sea bottom, we used maximum amplitude of seismic signal around the expected sea bottom, and picked the first increasing point larger than threshold value related with the maximum amplitude. To find sea bottom easily in the case of the low quality data, we transformed the input data to envelope data or the cross-correlated data using the sea bottom wavelet. We averaged the picked sea bottom depths and calculated the correction values. The maximum correction of the airgun data was about 0.8 m and the maximum correction of two kinds of 3.5 kHz SBP data was 0.5 m and 2.0 m respectively. We enhanced the continuity of the subsurface layer and produced the high quality seismic section using the proper methods of swell correction.

bottom as a reference basis, some theoretical elements which form bottom echoes during acoustic survey of demersal fish were considered. A stable bottom detection method based on maximum voltage difference, which was not influenced by variable levels and waveform transformation. The method has been shown to be effective using in-situ bottom echo waveforms and computer simulation data. A comparison between near-bottom SV profiles acquired in Funka Bay, Hokkaido, of Japan, the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea, of Korea, with the threshold method and maximum differential voltage method, shows that the SV obtained with the maximum differential voltage method is 4-6 dB higher than those with threshold method within 2m from the bottom.
Based on the monthly weather report of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and daily sea surface temperature (SST) in Incheon harbor of National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, heat budget in Incheon coastal area was estimated. The temperature differences between the sea surface and near bottom were nearly within 1$^{\circ}C$. This indicate the mixing from the sea surface and the bottom. The net heat flux through the sea surface and the advection through the inner and outer bay was affected uniformly to the water body in Incheon coastal area. The net heat flux was about 110W/$m^2$ in maximum value on May, about -80W/$m^2$ in minimum on January. The net heat flux through the sea surface from the solar radiation was about 2.35$\times$${10}^5$W during the year. This heat flux flew out the bay through the advection by the same flux.

We have extracted a surface deformation map of a part of Canisteo Peninsula on Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica by applying 4-pass DInSAR technique to two ERS-1/2 tandem pairs obtained on October 21-22, 1995 (diff-pair) and March 9-10, 1996 (topo-pair), and analyzed changes of glaciers, sea ice, ice shelves, and their kinematic interactions. We observed fast motion of glaciers pushing the adjoining sea ice. Some interferometric phases indicate the up-rise of sea ice of which type is thought to be land-fast ice to exert repulsive force against the pushing glacier. There were other glaciers and sea ice that moved to the same direction, suggesting that the sea ice in these regions was land-fast ice weakly harnessed to sea bottom or pack ice not harnessed at all. Several small circular fringes in ice shelves suggested that islands or seamounts on the bottom of ice shelves deterred the movement of ice shelves, resulting in the rise of ice surface.

The combined hydroacoustic and demersal trawl surveys to investigate the distribution characteristics of fish schools in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea were carried out during the spring of 1997 by the training ship "Nagasaki Maru" of Nagasaki University. Fish samples were collected by bottom trawling from 9 trawl stations randomly selected in the survey area, and the species and length compositions of trawl catches are examined. Hydroacoustic data were collected by using a Furuno FQ-50 scientific echo sounder operating at 50KHz and the data stored in field were later processed in the laboratory. The results obtained can be summarized as follows :1. In the 9 trawl surveys conducted in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, 78 species including 80 species of fishes, 4 species of Cephalopoda and 6 species of Crustacea, were identified. The most abundant species in these stations were swimming crab(Portunus trituberculatus), Japanese horse mackere(Trachurus japonicus), redlip croaker(Larimichthys polyactis) and the catch per one hour in each station ranged 7.7 to 182.5 kg/hour. 2. The mean volume backscattering strength for the entire water column and the bottom layer of the 0-10 m from bottom friction were -74.6 ㏈ and -68.2 ㏈, respectively. That is, the mean volume backscattering strength for the bottom layer was 6.4 ㏈ higher than that for the entire water column 3. In the surveys during the spring of 1997, the geographical distribution characteristics of fish schools suggests a trend of decreasing fish abundance toward the coast area of Korea and the highest demersal concentrations appeared in waters between the Cheju Island and the Tsushima Island 4. The distribution density of fish school in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea during the 1997 acoustic survey were estimated to be 6.65$\times$10$^{-5}$ kg/㎥ in the entire water column and 2.86$\times$l0$^{-4}$ kg/㎥ in the bottom layer, respectively.pectively.
Seafloor acoustic image data using the side scan sonar system were gathered on the Sindu-ri offshore near the Taean peninsula, middle western Korea. The relationship between the back-scattering acoustic intensity and the sea-bottom sediment properties was studied. And these two data sets were compared and interpreted with the water depth, respectively. Most of sediment properties were correlated well to the acoustic intensity, however the distribution patterns of the sea-bottom sediment and the seafloor acoustic image were not similar to each other except the rocky bottom area. The water depth was not only influential on the distribution pattern of seafloor acoustic image but also showed a linear relation with the sediment properties distribution.

This study examined distributional patterns of Asterias amurensis in Tongyeong, the central South Sea of Korea. The density of the sea star was estimated at 10 chosen sites in the inner and the outer parts of the Tongyeong coast from December 2000. The mean density of the species in this area was $2.4ind./m^{2}$. The seasonal surveys conducted at 3 arbitrary chosen sites (i.e., sea cage, reef and soft sediment) also showed that the abundance of the species at the sea cage site $(density:\;3.6\;ind./m^{2};\;biomass:\;250.7\;gwwt/m^{2})$ was significantly higher than at the reef site $(density:\;1.7\;ind./m^{2};\;biomass:\;63.5\;gwwt/m^{2})$ and the soft sediment site $(density:\;0.4\;ind./m^{2};\;biomass:\;18.9\;gwwt/m^{2})$. Densities were higher at sea cages areas than at reefs and soft bottom sites. At sea cage site, A. amurensis population exhibited a strong aggregated distributional pattern. In contrast, at reef and soft bottom sites, A. amurensis population showed a random distributional pattern. The spatial difference in prey species and its abundance was the primary factor determining the spatial heterogeneity of the sea star in its behavior characteristics. Experiments on the feeding preference indicated that A. amurensis had a strong selectivity on its prey, but this selectivity varied between populations living in different sites. In particular, A. amurensis populations at the reef site showed a strong selectivity on various sessile and mobile animals living in reef areas, suggesting that these animal groups may play a role as "windows for the survival of A. amurensis". These results suggest that the distribution of A. amurensis in Tongyeong is closely associated with abundance of prey species and the bottom composition.
We studied possibility of the sowing culture at the bottom after intermediate culture as a method for raising the survival of the Purplish Washington clam, Saxidomus purpuratus. The pearl net ($35cm(W){\times}35cm(B){\times}20cm(H)$) for S. prupuratus spat during the period of intermediate culture (hanging culture) from April to October in 2010. The pearl net (100 inds./net) was installed at two stations (Namhae and Pohang) being about 3-4 m in water depth. After hanging culture, S. prupuratus spat sowed in the bottom of the Gangjin Bay. The survivals (%) of intermediate culture of this species at Namhae station and Pohang station were 73% and 74%, respectively. Daily growth rate of mean shell length and mean weight in Namhae station were higher than those in Pohang station. After sowing at the bottom of the Gangjin Bay, its survival (%) showed 73.98% in January 2011. These results suggested the possibility of the intermediate culture as hanging culture for raising survival rate of S. prupuratus.

This study was conducted in order to the experiment of bottom trawl fisheries in the sea mount of central northern pacific($30^{\circ}-40^{\circ}N$, $170^{\circ}-175^{\circ}E$), during the period of July 1 to August 25, 2004 by commercial trawl ship. Fishing experiment was carried out by bottom trawl, with the codend of 110mm mesh size. The number of 101 test fishing was done in the sea mount of central northern pacific during 56 days and the total catches were 198,593kg as 18 fish species, and CPUE/day and catches/day were 8.3 hours towing time and 3,546kg. Catch ratio according to each fishing ground was higher with the order of B, C, and E, and catches for B was 7,171.0kg during the towing time of 13.2 hours. Main target species were Pseudopentaceros richardsoni and Beryx splendens, there was 14.9% of damage ratio for fishing gears on catching the target fishes inhabiting on the rough sea bottom. Catches by water depth was the order of 300m below, 301-350m, 451-500m and 351-400m. It is thought that there was no problem on the mesh size because most of fishes caught from the experimental fishing was 30cm over.
