  • Cu(In, Ga)$Se_2$ (CIGS) precursor films were electrodeposited on Mo/glass substrates in acidic solutions containing $Cu^{2+}$, $In^{3+}$, $Ga^{3+}$, and $Se^{4+}$ ions at -0.6 V (SCE) and pH. 1.8. In order to induce recrystallization, the electrodeposited $Cu_{1.00}In_{0.81}Ga_{0.09}Se_{2.08}$ (25.0 at.% Cu + 20.2 at.% In + 2.2 at.% Ga + 52.0 at.% Se) precursor films were annealed under a high Se gas atmosphere for 15, 30, 45, and 60 min, respectively, at $500^{\circ}C$. The Se amount in the film increased from 52 at.% to 62 at.%, whereas the In amount in the film decreased from 20.8 at.% to 9.1 at.% as the annealing time increased from 0 (asdeposited state) to 60 min. These results were attributed to the Se introduced from the furnace atmosphere and reacted with the In present in the precursor films, resulting in the formation of the volatile $In_2Se$. CIGS precursor grains with a cauliflower shape grew as larger grains with the $CuSe_2$ and/or $Cu_{2-x}Se$ faceted phases as the annealing times increased. These faceted phases resulted in rough surface morphologies of the CIGS films. Furthermore, the CIGS layers were not dense because the empty spaces between the grains were not removed via annealing. Uniform thicknesses of the $MoSe_2$ layers occurred at the 45 and 60 min annealing time. This implies that there was a stable reaction between the Mo back electrode and the Se diffused through the CIGS film. The results obtained in the present research were sufficiently different from comparable studies where the recrystallization annealing was performed under an atmosphere of Ar gas only or a low Se gas pressure.

  • The effects of Se, $CaCO_3$ and CaO addition on the first stage graphization of malleable iron were evaluated. The results obtained in this work were as follows. 1. Many gas bubbles were found in the white cast iron under Se, $CaCO_3$ addition. 2. Nodular graphite were formed by annealing of the white cast iron with remained gas bubbles. 3. When specimens were annealed, bubbles provided the nucleation sites that were needed in graphite precipitation, so the nucleation rate of graphite was increased. 4. The remained gas bubbles and defects were more effective for the graphitization than metallic compounds.

  • The motive gas of a supersonic ejector is supplied from different sources depending on the application. The performance of an ejector that is represented by the secondary flow pressure, starting and unstarting pressures heavily depends on the molecular properties of the motive gas. The effects of specific heat ratio of the motive gas were investigated experimentally for an axi-symmetric annular injection type supersonic ejector. Both the starting pressure and unstarting pressure, however, decreased with the increase of the specific heat ratio of the motive gas. It was discovered that the secondary flow pressure increased as the specific heat ratio of the motive gas decreased even if the stagnation pressure of the motive flow was invariant. However, when the motive gas flow nozzle area ratio is large enough for the motive gas to be condensed, different tendency was observed.

  • An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of trace Ge, As and Se in biological samples by inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry has been investigated. The effects of added organic gas into the coolant argon gas on the analyte signal were studied to improve the detection limit, accuracy and precision. The addition of a small amount of methane (10 mL/min.) into the coolant gas channel improved the ionization of Ge, As and Se. The analytical sensitivity of the proposed Ar/CH₄system was superior by at least two-fold to that of the conventional Ar method. In the present method, the detection limits obtained for Ge, As and Se were 0.014, 0.012 and 0.064 ㎍/L, respectively. The analytical reliability of the proposed method was evaluated by analyzing the certified standard reference materials (SRM). Recoveries of 99.9% for Ge, 103% for As, 96.5% for Se were obtained for NIST SRM of freeze dried urine sample. The proposed method was also applied to the biological samples.

  • This study evaluates a method for quantifying selenium (Se) concentration in soil using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), with oxygen as a reaction gas. This approach addresses the challenge of detecting low levels of Se in complex soil matrices and aims to effectively minimize interference problems typically associated with argon plasma in traditional ICP-MS analyses. The analytical method utilizes conditions optimized for minimizing spectral interference and were validated by linearity, accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ). The method demonstrated good linearity, high accuracy (90-97 %), and remarkable sensitivity, achieving detection and quantification limits of 0.15 ㎍/kg and 0.44 ㎍/kg, respectively. Developed analysis method for Se in soil was applied to field samples in the different regions of South Korea and Se concentration ranged from 0.11 to 0.52 mg/kg. Correlation analysis between Se concentration and soil properties showed that Se concentration was significantly correlated with cation exchange capacity (CEC) and available phosphorus among other soil properties.

  • $Co_3O_4$ thick film gas sensor using the powder prepared by hydrothermal reaction method(HRM) was fabricated. For comparison study, we also prepared the sensor using commercial $Co_3O_4$ powder under the same fabrication conditions. Sensitivity, time response, and selectivity of them to variable gases such as iso-$C_4H_{10}$, CO, $NH_3$, and $CH_4$ were investigated. The sensor from the powder prepared by HRM showed higher sensitivity to every gas than those from commercial powder. For iso-$C_4H_{10}$ gas, the sensitivities of both sensor to 100 ppm are 160 % and 40 %, respectively. Time response and selectivity of the sensor using the powder prepared by HRM were better than those of the sensor using commercial powder.

  • IC 10 is one of the most well-known irregular starburst dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. Its low metal and oxygen abundance together with proximity make it an excellent laboratory to test star formation models, especially in low-metallicity systems like galaxies in the early Universe as well as many other local dwarfs. Among a number of active star forming regions, we have detected H2O kilo-maser emission in the south-east region of IC 10(IC 10 SE) using the Korean VLBI Network(KVN). This maser line is likely to be associated with a giant molecular cloud identified in IC 10 SE by former CO studies. Using the HI and CO data from the VLA and SMA archive, we probe the atomic and molecular gas properties of IC 10 SE. We discuss how the cool gas morphology and kinematics are related with maser and star formation activity in IC 10 SE.

  • The extraction of trace amounts of Se in volcanic rock was investigated using the hydride generation method and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The powdered rock, 1.0 g, was decomposed with the mixture of $HClO_4$, $HNO_3$ and HF in an acid digestion bomb at $140^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. For the reduction of Se(VI) to Se(IV) in the solution, 10 mL of 6 M HCl and 0.2 mL of 1 M KBr were added to the solution and the mixture was heated for 30~45 minutes. $H_2Se$ was produced by adding 3% $NaBH_4$ as a strong reducing agent, extracted by nitrogen gas, and was absorbed twice into $KMnO_4$solution. The contents of Se in the solution were determined by generation/AAS. According to the proposed method, 1.0 ng or more of Se was quantitatively extracted and Se levels of 2.5 ng/g or more in rock samples could be determined. For example, Se in a rhyolite was determined with the precision of $19.5{\pm}1.3ng/g$(95% confidence, n=6).

  • The n-type $(95%Bi_2Te_3-5%Bi_2Se_3)$ compound was newly fabricated by gas atomization and hot extrusion, which is considered to be a mass production technique of this alloy. The effect of powder size on thermoelectric properties of 0.04% $SbI_3$ doped $95%Bi_2Te_3-5%Bi_2Se_3$ alloy were investigated. Seebeck coefficient $({\alpha})$ and Electrical resistivity $(\rho)$ increased with increasing powder size due to the decrease in carrier concentration by oxygen content. With increasing powder size, the compressive strength of $95%Bi_2Te_3-5%Bi_2Se_3$ alloy was increased due to the relative high density. The compound with ${\sim}300\;{\mu}m$ size shows the highest power factor among the four different powder sizes. The rapidly solidified and hot extruded compound using $200[\sim}300{\mu}m$ powder size shows the highest compressive strength.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the emission characteristics of volatile metals(Hg, As, Se) and semi volatile metals such as Pb from small and medium size municipal solid waste incinerators(MSWIs). The concentrations of Hg, Pb, As and Se in emission gas from small size waste incinerators were higher than those of medium size waste incinerators. This is probably due to less air pollutant control devices and high emission gas temperature of the small size waste incinerators relative to the medium size waste incinerators. Emission gas temperature from small and medium size waste incinerators were divided into 2 groups. The first group was about $100^{\circ}C$ and the second roup in the range of $400{\sim}700^{\circ}C$. The concentrations of emission gas at the second group were Hg $70.43\;{\mu}g/Sm^3$, Pb $0.94\;{\mu}g/Sm^3$, As $9.83\;{\mu}g/Sm^3$ and Se $5.05\;{\mu}g/Sm^3$. The concentrations of Hg, Pb, As and Se at the first group were lower than those found at the second group. Besides, the removal efficiencies of Hg in medium size waste incinerators were $55.2{\sim}95.9%$. Emission gas temperature reduction from waste heat boiler(WHB) contribute to control of Hg. Based on above results, we postulate that the temperature of flue gas should play a very important role in volatile metal control in small and medium size MSWIs. In order to improve the volatile metals removal efficiency, the temperature of cooling system must be controlled and the air pollution control device should be operated properly.
