In this study, the $CO_2$ removal characteristics of the Vortex tube type absorbtion apparatus were investigated to enhance the compactness of $CO_2$ absorption process and to reduce the amount of absorbing solution of the $CO_2$ separation process. The Vortex tube with the diameter of 17 mm and the length of 250mm was introduced in the experimental apparatus to treat $20Nm^3/hr$ of $CO_2$ containing flue gas. The flue gases for experiments containing 11~13 vol% of $CO_2$ were supplied from the coal-firing CFBC power plant with 12 ton/hr of steam producing capacity. The mixed solutions of 20 wt% of MEA as base solution with the adding solutions like HMDA, AMP and KOH were used as absorbents. The experiments were executed under the various conditions like the absorbing solution concentrations in the range of 20 to 50 wt%, the flow rate of $CO_2$ containing flue gases in the range of 6 to $15Nm^3/hr$ and the flow rate of absorbing solution in the range of 1.0 to 3.0 l/min. As a results, the $CO_2$ removal efficiency of mixed absorbent of 20 wt% of MEA with HMDA was remarkable. From this study, we concluded that the efficient separation of $CO_2$ from flue gases using the features of the Vortex tube type absorbing unit for gas/liquid contact and the separation of gas/liquid be possible. But more works are needed to increase the $CO_2$ removal efficiency of Vortex tube process.
Filtered containment venting system (FCVS) is one of the severe accident mitigation systems designed to release containment pressurization to maintain its integrity. The thermal-hydraulic behaviors in FCVSs are important since they affect the operation characteristics of the FCVS. In this study, a representative FCVS was modeled by RELAP5/Mod3.3 code, and the Station BlackOut (SBO) was chosen as an accident scenario. The thermal-hydraulic behaviors of an FCVS during long-term operation with two venting strategies (open-and-close strategy, open-and-non-close strategy) and the sensitivity analysis of important parameters were investigated. The results show that the FCVS can operate up to 250 h with a periodic open-and-close strategy during an SBO. Under the combined effects of steam condensation and water evaporation, the solution inventory in the FCVS increases during the venting phase and decreases during the intermission phase, showing a periodic pattern. Under this condition, the appropriate initial water level is 3-4 m; however, it should be adjusted according to the environment temperature. The FCVS can accommodate a decay heat power of 150-260 kW and may need to feed water for a higher decay heat power or drain water for a lower decay heat power during the late phase. The FCVS can function within an opening pressure range from 450 kPa to 500 kPa and a closing pressure range between 250 kPa and 350 kPa. When the open-and-non-close strategy is adopted, the solution inventory increases quickly in the early venting phase due to steam condensation and then decreases gradually due to the evaporation of water; drying-up may occur in the late venting phase. Decreasing the venting pipe diameter and increasing the initial water level can mitigate the evaporation of the scrubbing solution. These results are expected to provide useful references for the design and engineering application of FCVSs.
POU (point of use) scrubbers were applied for the treatment of waste gases including PFCs (perfluorocompounds) exhausted from the CVD (chemical vapor deposition), etching, and cleaning processes of semiconductor and display manufacturing plant. The GWP (global warming potential) and atmosphere lifetime of PFCs are known to be a few thousands higher than that of $CO_2$, and extremely high temperature more than 3,000 K is required to thermally decompose PFCs. Therefore, POU gas scrubbers based on the thermal plasma technology were developed for the effective control of PFCs and industrial application of the technology. The thermal plasma technology encompasses the generation of powerful plasma via the optimization of the plasma torch, a highly stable power supply, and the matching technique between two components. In addition, the effective mixture of the high temperature plasma and waste gases was also necessary for the highly efficient abatement of PFCs. The purpose of this paper was to provide not only a useful technical information of the post-treatment process for the waste gas scrubbing but also a short perspective on R&D of POU plasma gas scrubbers.
Introduction : Recently, water and environmental pollution becomes serious social problem and high technology makes this pollution accelerate. Hydrogen sulfide, the main subject of our research, is one of the most dangerous air pollutant like SO$_x$ and NO$_x$. The major contaminant in coal gasification is H$_2$S, which is very toxic, hazardous and extremely corrosive. Therefore, control of hydrogen sulfide to a safe level is essential. Although commercial desulfurization process called liquid scrubbing is effective for removal of H$_2$S, it has drawbacks, the loss of sensible heat of the gas and costly wastewater treatment. Many investigations are carried out about high-temperature removal ol H$_2$S in hot coal-derived gas using metal oxide or mixed metal qxide sorbents. It was reported that ZnO was very effective sorbent for H2S removal, but it has big flaw to vaporize elemental zinc above 600\ulcorner \ulcorner As alternative, metal oxides such as CaO, $Fe_2O_3$, TiO$_2$ and CuO were added to ZnO. Especially, different results are reported for $Fe_2O_3$ additive. Tamhankar et al. reported SiO$_2$ with 45 wt% $Fe_2O_3$ sorbent is favorable for removal of H$_2$S and regeneration.

The solvent extraction for the separation of platinum group metals from the leach liquor of spent automotive catalysts has been studied. Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), tri-n-octylamine (TOA) and di-n-hexyl sulfide (DHS) were used as extractants and kerosene as a diluent. The extraction behavior of platinum, palladium and rhodium has been investigated as functions of different kinds of extractants and their concentrations. In addition, the extraction behavior of the major metal impurities such as cerium, lead, iron, magnesium and aluminum has been investigated. Platinum and palladium were extracted with TBP. And platinum, palladium and rhodium were extracted with TOA. Platinum was co-extracted with palladium into the organic phase by solvent extraction using SFI-6 of DHS extractant, but only palladium was selectively extracted with SFI-6R. The selective extraction of palladium with SFI-6R was found better than that with SFI-6, but the kinetics of extraction with SFI-6R was found poor in comparison to SFI-6. The metal impurities extracted simultaneously during the extraction of platinum group metals should be removed in scrubbing and stripping processes. A suitable process has been proposed for the separation of platinum group metals from the leach liquor of spent automotive catalysts. Initially palladium was extracted with SFI-6R, followed by the separation of platinum with TBP or TOA leaving rhodium in the raffinate.

A scale up tests (380 kg/day) using a continuous solvent extraction and electro-winning system was carried out to separate and recover cobalt from a solution containing 1.91 g/L Co and 14.65 g/L Ni. The solution was obtained during a process including solvent extraction and precipitation stages for removal of Cu and Fe from a synthetic sulfuric acid solution of manganese nodule matte. The optimal condition for solvent extraction was : solvent concentration of 0.22M Na-Cyanex 272 (45% saponified with NaOH) and O:A phase ratios of 1:1.5, 10:1 and 1.5:1 used in extraction, scrubbing and stripping stages, respectively. The extraction and stripping efficiencies were found to be 99.8% and 99.88%, respectively. The stripped solution contained 40.27 g/L Co with 4 ppm Ni. Cobalt metal of 99.963% purity was yielded with current efficiency of 67% and current density of $0.563A/dm^2$ during the electro-winning process.
The objective of this work is to study transdermal delivery of levodopa using iontophoresis and evaluate various factors which affect the transdermal transport. Levodopa is unstable in aqueous solution, and, in order to establish a stable condition for levodopa for the duration of experiment, we investigated the stability of levodopa in aqueous solutions of different pHs with/without the addition of dextrose or the application of current. Using stable aqueous solution, we have studied the effect of pH, polarity and penetration enhancer (ethanol) on transdermal flux and compared the results. We also investigated the iontophoretic flux from hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogel. In vitro flux study was performed at $33^{\circ}C$, using side-by-side diffusion cell. Full thickness hairless mouse skin and rat skin were used for this work. Current densities applied were 0.4 or $0.6mA/cm^2$ and current was off after 6 hour application. Stability study showed that levodopa solution with a pH 2.5 or 4.5 maintained the initial concentration of levodopa for 24 hours with the addition of 5% dextrose. However, at pH 9.5, levodopa was unstable and 30 to 40% of levodopa degraded within 24 hours, even with the addition of 5% dextrose. Hydrogel swollen with dextrose added levodopa solution maintained about 97% of the initial concentration of levodopa for 13 days, when stored in $4^{\circ}C$. The application of current did not affect the stability of levodopa in hydrogel. Flux study from levodopa solution with pH 2.5 showed that cathodal delivery of levodopa was higher than passive or anodal delivery. When the pH of the donor solution was 4.5, anodal delivery of levodopa was higher than passive or cathodal delivery. These results seem to indicate that electroosmosis plays more dominant role than electrorepulsion in the flux of levodopa at pH 2.5, and the reverse situation applies for pH 4.5. The passive flux was unexpectedly high for the ionized levodopa. Similar to the results from aqueous solution, cumulative amount of levodopa transported trom HPC hydrogel by cathodal delivery was significantly higher than passive or anodal delivery. The treatment of 70% ethanol cotton ball by scrubbing increased passive, anodal and cathodal flux, with the largest increase for anodal flux. These results indicate that iontophoretic delivery of zwitterion such as levodopa is much complicated than that can be expected from small ionic molecules with single charge. The results also indicate that the balance between electroosmosis and electrorepulsion plays a very important role in the transport through skin.
In this paper, the recycling of waste Ni-MH battery by-products for electric vehicle is studied. Although rare earths elements still exist in waste Ni-MH battery by-products, they are not valuable as materials in the form of by-products (such as an insoluble substance). This study investigates the recovering of rare earth oxide for solvent extraction A/O ratio, substitution reaction, and reaction temperature, and scrubbing of the rare earth elements for high purity separation. The by-product (in the form of rare earth elements insoluble powder) is converted into hydroxide form using 30% sodium hydroxide solution. The remaining impurities are purified using the difference in solubility of oxalic acid. Subsequently, Yttrium is isolated by means of D2EHPA (Di-[2-ethylhexyl] phosphoric acid). After cerium is separated using potassium permanganate, lanthanum and neodymium are separated using PC88A (2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester) and it is calcinated at a temperature of 800 ℃. As a result of the physical and chemical measurement of the calcined lanthanum and neodymium powder, it is confirmed that the powder is a microsized porous powder in an oxide form of 99.9% or more. Rare earth oxides are recovered from Ni-MH battery by-products through two solvent extraction processes and one oxidation process. This study has regenerated lanthanum and neodymium oxide as a useful material.
The amount of greenhouse gas emission reduction based on INDCs (Intended Nationally Determined Contributions) submitted to UN by each party is not sufficient to achieve the Paris Agreement's aim to "hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below $2^{\circ}C$ above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to $1.5^{\circ}C$" which was determined in the $21^{st}$ Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 21). Accordingly, the emission reduction target of each party will be revised for the $2^{\circ}C$ goal. Among the several options to reduce the carbon emission, CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) is a key option to curb $CO_2$ emissions from large emission sources such as fossil-based power plants, cement plants, and steel production plants. A large scale CCS demonstration projects utilizing $1^{st}$ generation $CO_2$ capture technologies are under way around the world. It is anticipated, however, that the deployment of those $1^{st}$ generation $CO_2$ capture technologies in great numbers without government support will be difficult due to the high capture cost and considerable increase of cost of electricity. To reduce the carbon capture cost, $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ generation technologies are under development in a pilot or a bench scale. In this paper, current status of large scale CCS demonstration projects and the $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ generation capture technologies are summarized. Novel capture technologies on wet scrubbing, dry sorbent, and oxygen combustion are explained in detail for all capture areas: post-combustion capture, pre-combustion capture, and new combustion technologies.

A hydrometallurgical process to leach cobalt from the waste cathodic active material, $LiCoO_{2}$, and subsequently to separate it by solvent extraction was developed. The optimum leaching conditions for high recovery of colbalt and lithium were obtained: 2.0 M sulfuric acid, 5 $vol.\%$ hydrogen peroxide, $75^{\circ}C$ leaching temperature, 30 minutes leaching time and an initial pulp density of 100 g/L. The respective leaching efficiencies for Co and Li were $93\%$ and $94.5\%$. About $85\%$ Co was extracted from the sulfuric acid leach liquor containing 44.72 g/L Co and 5.43 g/L Li, using 1.5 M Cyanex272 as an extractant at the initial pH 5.0 and in organic to aqueous phase ratio of 1.6:1 under the single stage extraction conditions. The Co in the raraffinate was completely extracted by 0.5 M Na-Cyanex272 at the inital pH 5.0, and an organic to aqueous phase ratio of 1;1. The cobalt sulfate solution of higher than $99.99\%$ purity could be recovered from waste $LiCoO_{2}$, using a series of hydrometallurgical processes: sulfuric acid leaching of waste $LiCoO_{2}$- solvent extraction of Co by Na-Cyanex 271 - scrubbing of Li by sodium carbonate solution - stripping of Co by sulfuric acid solution.
