Objective: Anterior screw fixation provides the best anatomical and functional results for type II odontoid process fracture (type II-A, II-N, and II-P) with intact transverse ligament. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of the 4.5mm diameter, cannulated Herbert screw in anterior screw fixation. Methods: From Jan. 2003 to Feb. 2004, consecutive 10cases of type II odontoid process fractures were treated with anterior screw fixation using a Herbert screw. The Herbert screw has double threads, with different pitches on the distal and proximal ends. It has no head, so it can be inserted through articular cartilage and buried below bone surface. It was originally developed for treating scaphoid fractures. Results: There were 8male and 2female patients whose ages ranged from 15 to 67years (mean 42.1years). The fracture type was type II-A in 4patients, II-N in 3 patients, and II-P in 3 patients. The fracture line was oblique downward and backward in 6cases, oblique downward and forward in 1 case, and horizontal in 3cases. The range of follow-up was 5 to 18months (mean 12months). Bone fusions were achieved in all cases without any instrumental failures or postoperative complications. Conclusion: The Herbert screw is very useful in anterior fixation for type II odontoid process fracture. This series showed successful results also in type II-A odontoid fracture when treated with the Herbert screw, but further more studies are required.
Statement of problem. Implant screw loosening has been remained a problem in implant prosthodontics. The time needed to insert screw driver into abutment screw head should be shortened for the purpose of decreasing the chair time. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the design of abutment screw driver on the amount of time for insertion of screw driver into abutment screw head. Material and methods. Hexagonal and rectangular types of abutment screw drivers were used. The original abutment screw drivers were modified by grinding acute angle of the screw driver tip (modified drivers). Group 1 : hexagonal type abutment screw and original driver Group 2 : hexagonal type abutment screw and modified driver Group 3 : rectangular type abutment screw and original driver Group 4 : rectangular type abutment screw and modified driver UCLA lab analogues were located in acrylic resin block. The angulations of them were 0 and 20 degrees. The times needed for insertion were measured. Group 1 and 3 were used as controls. Results. 1. Group 2 showed shorter insertion time than group 1, regardless of implant angulations (p<.05). 2. Group 4 showed shorter insertion time than group 3, regardless of implant angulations (p<.05). Conclusion. Modified abutment screw drivers required less amount of time to insert screw driver into abutment screw head. Modification of abutment screw driver was beneficial.
The extruder type is classified as screw type and non-screw type in terms of the extrusion method. The screw type extruder, which is the most frequently used, is classified as the single screw extruder and the multi-screw extruder. They are classified as vertical type and horizontal type in terms of structure; and those for compounding and for forming in terms of function. The single screw extruder is a universal extruder, most of which is suitable for the extrusion forming of thermoplastic resin. The multi-screw(two-screw, three-screw and four-screw) extruder can increase the extrusion power using the engagement of the screw flank. The single screw extruder does not have a good mixing ratio of the raw material and stable extrusion power, while it has low construction cost and operation cost. In this study, the single screw extruder, which has many weak points compared with the multi-screw extruder, was studied. There have been many studies on the single screw extruder, and they led to its significant development. The existing study method, however, had complex analysis processes and required much time. In this study, the CFD was applied to the performance test and analysis of the extruder, and the optimal design condition of the extrusion power for the screw and die of the single screw extruder was found by comparing the analysis results with the actual performance measurement of the single screw extruder.
Screw-type fasteners are widely used to make connections between wood members or between wood and steel connectors because they can tolerate the applied loads by withdrawal or shearing. In this study, we evaluated the withdrawal resistances of the screw-type fasteners and analyzed the effects of the lead-hole size, relative grain direction (tangential, radial, and cross-sections) of the wood member, screw diameter, screw type, and species. Two wood species, including domestic larch and imported spruce, and three screw-type fasteners, including domestic lag screws (diameters of 9.46, 7.79, and 6.27 mm), domestic tapping screw (diameter, 6.3 mm), and imported Sherpa screw (diameter, 8.0 mm) were used. To assess the effect of lead-hole size, the lead holes with diameters corresponding to 68.7%, 70.8%, and 74.0% of the shank diameter of the lag screw were predrilled. The lead hole corresponding to 74% of the shank diameter was selected for this study because the smaller lead holes required higher rotational force for installation, which may cause damage in the screw neck, although there was no significant difference in the withdrawal resistance depending on the lead-hole sizes applied in this study. The lag screws installed on the tangential and radial surfaces showed similar withdrawal resistances to each other, which were greater than those installed on the cross-sectional surface. As the lag screw diameter increased from 6.27 mm to 9.46 mm, the withdrawal resistance also increased proportionally. The withdrawal resistance of the tapping screw having a diameter of 6.3 mm was almost 1.6 times higher than that of the lag screw having a similar diameter of 6.27 mm, while that of Sherpa screw having a diameter of 8.0 mm was around 1.4 times higher than that of the lag screw having a similar diameter of 7.79 mm.
The purpose of this study was to compare the screw loosening characteristics of three avail-able cementation type abutments: one-piece cementation type abutment; two-piece cementation type abutment using titanium abutment screw; two-piece cementation type abutment using gold abutment screw. Two implant supported three-unit superstructures were fabricated using a pair of 3 kinds of abutments for each experimental model. Cyclic loading was applied on the specimen, and made to stop when the superstructure showed movement over threshold range. The loaded cycle was counted until the machine stopped. Frequency analysis was done to measure the change of natural frequency before and after the application of cyclic load and to find the effect of screw loosening on the change of natural frequency. The specimen assembly was modeled to perform the finite element analysis to see the distribution of the stress induced by the application of preload over the screw joint and to compare the pattern of the distribution of stress induced by the external force with the change of the preload condition. The following results were obtained: 1. The failure loading cycle of two-piece cementation type abutment using gold screw was significantly greater than those of the other groups. 2. One-piece cementation type abutment applied to multi-unit restoration case did not show greater resistance to screw loosening compared to two-piece cementation type abutments. 3. Frequency analysis showed decrease in natural frequency when screw loosening occured.
In this study, the effects of the impeller shapes on the pump performances of the non-clogging and the screw-type centrifugal pumps are experimentally studied. The characteristics of total head, efficiency and power of the non-clogging pump increase as the number of vanes increases. The screw-type centrifugal pump with the linear-shape vane shows a little better performance than that of the screw-type centrifugal pump with the curved-shape vane. The differences in the characteristics of total head, efficiency and power are, however, insignificant. Therefore, it is advisable that, considering the convenience of pump manufacturing, the screw-type centrifugal pump with the linear-shape vane should be used. This study also compares the pump characteristics of the non-clogging pump and screw-type centrifugal pump. The characteristics of total head and efficiency of the non-clogging pump are better than those of the screw-type centrifugal pump. The screw-type centrifugal pump requires more shaft power than the non-clogging pump.
One of the most common problems with pedicle screw system is pullout of the screw. This study was performed to evaluate the pullout strength and driving torque of newly designed pedicle screws. The design of three type screws were standard pedicle screw, which had single lead threaded and single pitched design (Type A), single pitched and dual lead threaded pedicle screw (Type B), dual pitched and dual lead threaded pedicle screw (Type C), respectively. The tests were performed in accordance with the ASTM standards using polyurethane (PU) foam blocks. There was no significant difference in pullout strength among three types of screw. Type B and Type C exhibited higher insertion torque and removal torque than Type A, respectively (p<0.05). Pedicle screws newly developed with dual pitched and dual lead threaded design showed higher driving torque without decrease in pullout strength compared to the standard pedicle screw and could be inserted more rapidly with the same number of revolutions.
This study suggests a small-sized screw decanter specialized for dredging sites. Generally, conventional screw decanters are composed of a cylinder and a cone. However, the suggested screw decanter simply has a cone based on a cone-type bowl structure. In this research, a commercial analysis tool is used to establish an optimal design for the bowl and the screw conveyor. Moreover, the base frame, where the main bearings that support the spindle of the bowl and the screw conveyor are installed, is optimally designed considering the weight of the rotating body and the deflection caused by the high centrifugal force. Furthermore, the natural frequency range of the spinning body, the bowl and the screw conveyor, is applied to this base frame; it is designed not to correspond to the resonance frequency range and achieves stability as a result. This study suggests an optimal design for the rotating body and the base frame of a screw decanter considering its vibration characteristics. Such a design will prevent overuse of materials and help to reduce the weight and volume-and the price-of a screw decanter.
The stress distribution generated in the surrounding bone was calculated and compared for various geometry of the dental implants by means of the finite element methods. The models were designed to represent the screw type endosseous implants(varing the size, shape, direction of the screw thread and the angle of the body) with supporting bone and the cylinder type endosseous implants(varing the lower portion-Round type, tapered type) with supporting bone. Static mean bite forces were applied 100N vertically and 25N horizontally on the center of the implant and three dimensional finite analysis was undertaken using software ANSYS 5.1 Version. The result demonstrated that different implant shape leads to significant variations in stress distribution in the bone. In the case of variation of the screw size, direction and shape the implant model with normally directional and triangular screw implied lower stress than with upper directional or lower directional and quadrangular screw but among models a different screw size, within a variation of 0.2mm there was no meaningful difference in maximum stress. In the case of variation of angle of body the straight implied lower stress than the tapered. As a result of analysis of cylinder type, the implants with larger radius of curvature of the round form and larger diameter of the tapered form implied lower stress.
