The purpose of this study was to detect expression of genes related to egg production in Taiwan Country chickens by suppression subtractive hybridization. Liver samples of mRNA extraction from two Taiwan Country chicken strains (L2 and B), originated from the same population but with very distinct egg production rates after long-term selection for egg and meat production respectively. Two-way subtraction was performed. The hepatic cDNA from the low egg production chickens (B) was subtracted from the hepatic cDNA from the high egg production strain (L2). The reversed subtraction (L2 from B) was also performed. The resulting differentially expressed gene fragments were cloned and sequenced. We sequenced 288 clones from the forward subtraction and 96 clones from the reverse subtraction. These genes were subjected to further screening to confirm the differential expression between the two genetic breeds of chickens. The apolipoprotein B (apoB) was expressed to a greater extent in the liver of the L2 than in the B line chickens. The 5-aminoimidazole- 4-carboxamide ribonucleotide formyltransferase/IMP cyclohydrolase (PURH) was expressed to a greater extent in the liver of the B than in the L2 strain chickens. We demonstrated that both apoB and PURH were more highly expressed in the liver than that in other tissues (muscle, ovary, and oviduct) in laying Taiwan Country chickens. Taken together, these data suggest that after the selection for egg production, expression of apoB and PURH genes were also changed. Whether the changed expression of these genes is directly related to egg production is not known, but these two genes may be useful markers for egg laying performance in Taiwan Country chickens.
In 2006, the number of days of the screen quota (theatrical movie screening days of Korean produced films in a year required by the law) was reduced to 73 days from 146 days per year. Three years after the reduction of screen quota, this paper studies the impact of reduction of screen quota system on Korean produced films. Using Non-parametric statistics, Gini Index and Regression analysis, this study shows that the average number of Korean moviegoer of Korean films which was released last three years(2007-2009) after the cutback of screen quota in 2006 is reduced to 640,109.9123 from 1,107,217.82 for three years(2003-2005) before the cutback. And this is significant in statistics. while Hollywood film gets 76,168,518 more audiences than the total number of audience for 2003-2005, the total numbers of Korean films is cut to 218,917,590 (2007-2009) from 245,802,356 (2003-2005). Gini Index of 2009(0.84) indicates that the inequality of a distribution of box office performance of Korean films is getting worse after the cutback. For now, the reduction of screen quota has negative effects for Korean films. Only the technological advance, education of relates personnel, redesigning of the related infrastructure, market-driven movies, creative production, and the promotion of the independent films can reduced the negative effects.
In this study, a Korean native cattle strain (Hanwoo) evidencing high performance in terms of both meat quality and quantity was employed in the generation of 150,000 BAC clones with an average insert size of 140 kb, and corresponding to about a 6X coverage of bovine chromosomal DNA. The BAC clones were pooled in a mini-scale via three rounds of a pooling protocol, and the efficiency of this pooling protocol was evaluated by testing the accuracy of accessibility to the positive clones, via a PCR-based screening method. Two sets of primers designed from each of two known genes were tested, and each yielded 2 or 3 positive clones for each gene, thereby indicating that the BAC library pooling system was appropriate with regard to the accession of the target BAC clones. Analyses of $3.3{\times}10^6$ base pairs obtained from the 7,090 BAC end sequence (BES) showed that 34.88% of the DNA sequence harbored the repetition sequence. Analysis of the 7,090 BES to the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ generation radiation hybrid map of the cattle genome, using the COMPASS program designed for the construction of a cattle-human comparative mapping, resulted in the localization of a total of 1,374 clones proximal to 339 $1^{st}$ generation markers, and 1,721 clones proximal to 664 $2^{nd}$ generation markers. Collectively, the BAC library and pooling system of the BAC clones from the Korean cattle, coupled with the chromosome-localized BAC clones, will provide us with novel tools for the excavation of desired clones for genome mapping and sequencing, and will also furnish us with additional information regarding breed differences in cattle.
Objective: The aim of the study was to isolate gossypol-degrading bacteria and to assess its potential for gossypol degradation. Methods: Rumen liquid was collected from fistulated cows grazing the experimental pasture. Approximately 1 mL of the rumen liquid was spread onto basal medium plates containing 2 g/L gossypol as the only source of carbon and was then cultured at $39^{\circ}C$ to isolate gossypol-degrading bacteria. The isolated colonies were cultured for 6 h and then their size and shape observed by microscope and scanning electron microscope. The 16S rRNA gene of isolated colonies was sequenced and aligned using National Center for Biotechnology Information-Basic Local Alignment Search Tool. The various fermentation conditions, initial pH, incubation temperature, inoculum level and fermentationperiod were analyzed in cottonseed meal (CSM). The crude protein (CP), total gossypol (TG), and free gossypol (FG) were determined in CSM after fermentation with isolated strain at $39^{\circ}C$ for 72 h. Results: Screening results showed that a single bacterial isolate, named Rumen Bacillus Subtilis (RBS), could use gossypol as a carbon source. The bacterium was identified by 16S rDNA sequencing as being 98% homologous to the sequence of Bacillus subtilis strain GH38. The optimum fermentation conditions were found to be 72 h, $39^{\circ}C$, pH 6.5, moisture 50%, inoculum level $10^7cell/g$. In the optimum fermentation conditions, the FG and TG content in fermented CSM decreased 78.86% and 49% relative to the control. The content of CP and the essential amino acids of the fermented CSM increased respectively, compared with the control. Conclusion: The isolation of a gossypol-degrading bacterium from the cow rumen is of great importance for gossypol biodegradation and may be a valuable potential source for gossypol-degradation of CSM.
Objectives : Chronic alcohol consumption has been known to result in various neurocognitive deficits. Many neuropsychological studies revealed that the major disturbances occurred in the executive function, learning and short-term memory, visuospatial performance function, perceptuo-motor skills, and abstraction and problem solving abilities. This study was done to identify which cognitive areas might be mainly affected. Methods : The cognitive disturbance was evaluated using the Korean Version of the Mini Mental State Examination(MMSEK) and the 7 Minute Screen(7MS) in male inpatients with alcohol dependence(N=3 : as well as in age and education level matched healthy male controls(N=30). Four individual tests of the 7MS were consisted of the Benton Temporal Orientation Test, the Enhanced Cued Recall, the Clock Drawing and the Category Fluency. Results : 1) The average scores of four individual test of the 7MS for the alcoholics were $2.77{\pm}4.38$ for the Benton Temporal Orientation Test, $13.90{\pm}2.02$ for the Memory Test(the Cued Recall $6.77{\pm}1.94$, the Uncued Recall $7.10{\pm}2.45$), $5.84{\pm}1.86$ for the Clock Drawing, and $12.58{\pm}3.29$ for the Category Fluency. Except the Benton Temporal Orientation Test, there were statistically significant differences between test scores of alcoholics and those of controls(p<0.01). 2) The alcoholics who had MMSE-K score <24 were 9.68%. The average(${\pm}S.D.$) score of the MMSE-K for the patient group($27.23{\pm}2.62$) was significantly(p<0.001) lower than that of the healthy controls($29.20{\pm}1.24$). There were no statistically significant differences between four individual test scores of the 7MS of alcoholics with the MMSE-K score <24(N=3) and those of alcoholics with the MMSE-K score ${\geq}24$(N=28). 3) Four individual test scores of the 7MS seemed to have statistically significant association with such variables as MMSE-K, duration of alcohol drinking, blood magnesium concentration, liver function and thyroid function. Conclusion : Mild deficits of cognitive areas such as orientation, memory, visuospatial abilities and verbal fluency could be found in alcohol dependence.

In this study, we examined the accuracy of the assessment items for selecting start-ups used in the project to support start-ups and verified their validity in determining whether they are appropriate assessment items based on selection criteria. The results of 973 start-ups that applied for the project fostering startup leading universities were collected and logistic regression was performed using SPSS 18.0. The study results are summarized as follows. First, the differences in characteristics of start-ups were identified in terms of selection. Second, the impact of selection by assessment items was gender in 2015, capability of the founder, business establishment in 2016, performance and potential in the global market, and business startup in 2017. Third, the overall selection accuracy analysis for the last three years confirmed that the accuracy of the selection is lower each year and that the accuracy of the selection is lower than the accuracy of the non-selection. This means that the current assessment items for selecting start-ups are inaccurate for selection, and that changes in the items due to changes in the start-up environment each year have led to lower accuracy of selection. It is meaningful that this study raised the importance of assessment items and the need for improvement of assessment items for the screening functions of good start-ups to enhance efficiency of the policies for startup support.

This study has shown the tendency to enhance Sand Flux, a device of separating screening the foreign matter, for the recycling of construction waste possible to improve the quality of wet type production system meaningfully as part of research. As a result of experiment on the basic material properties, this study had a tendency to improve the quality and performance significantly in case of absolute surface dried density, 0.08mm sieve throughput, volume of clay lumps, and content of organic foreign matter. In addition, as a result of examining the quality characteristics of mortar, this study has shown the tendency that the flow and compressive strength more increased than the mortar using RS-II by utilizing RS-VI recycled sand produced finally through the device Sand Flux. As for the shrinkage properties, this study has shown the character the generation rate of crack of mortar using RS-IV recycled sand produced finally through the device Sand Flux.
As breast cancer shows the highest incidence among women's cancers, the use of mammography is also increasing as a screening test. Mammography should produce high-quality images for accurate diagnosis. For this, it is necessary to manage the performance and image quality of mammography. Thus, in order to investigate quality control, the present study conducted a questionnaire survey of 37 hospitals registered as breast cancer medical examination centers in Gwang-Ju, concerning their quality control of mammography. In the results of surveying the characteristics of apparatus use for mammography, many respondents did not know about the equipment that they were using. Of the hospitals, 19 (49%) were using film, 19 (49%) CR, and 1 DR. In the results of asking how to do quality control, only 38% answered that they inspected according to the manual. In addition, all the surveyed hospitals had specialized agencies do quality control for them. As to the reason for using agencies, 65% mentioned limitations in personnel, time, distance, etc, and 44% mentioned the absence of machines and materials. These results suggest that quality control is being performed perfunctorily, as well as passively and indifferently as it relies on specialized agencies. Accordingly, it is necessary to provide regular education for enhancing people's perception of quality control and to perform quality control adequately in the presence of Radiologist.
Soil actinomycetes of 703 strains were isolated from 25 sampling points in Cheju Island using 4 different media. Arginine glycerol salts agar containing soil extract was found to be the best medium for the isolation of soil actinomycetes. Soil samples from pasture land showed higher population and diversity of the actinomycetes than those from citrus field, forest, island, hill or valley. When the antibacterial activity of the 526 isolates was tested against three bacterial strains, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas solanacearum the frequency of the isolates with antibacterial activity varied much depending upon the media used for isolation and cultivation. BL106Ba, one of the 10 isolates that showed antibacterial activity against all the above 3 test strains, was chosen based upon the pH and heat stability of its antibacterial metabolites, and was identified as Streptomyces sp. based upon its cultural, morphological and physiological characteristics. The partially purified white crystalline substance obtained from the culture supematant of BL1063a through cation exchange chromatography(AG MP-50) and three times consecutive gel filtration(Sephadex G-10) showed high antimicrobial activity against gram positive and negative bacteria, but low activity against yeasts. The partially purified substance was found to contain at least four different compounds with antibacterial activity by both thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography.

This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of Italian ryegrass cultivars for salt tolerance under in vitro condition. Italian ryegrass cultivars such as Greenfarm, Florida80, Kowinearly, and Hwasan101 were tested for their tolerance to various sodium chloride levels (0, 50, 150, 250, and 350 mM). The seed germination, growth, and activities of antioxidant enzymes were investigated under salt treatment. Physiological traits such as seed germination percentage, germination period, shoot and root length, and dry weight were suppressed under entire salt stress conditions. The results indicated that the highest germination percentage and shoot and root length were recorded at normal conditions. Increased sodium chloride levels caused a significant reduction in the seed germination and growth rate. Among the four tested cultivars, Italian ryegrass 'Hwasan101' could be considered as salt tolerant owing to its higher germination percentage, better seedling growth and antioxidant activities under salinity stress, whereas Greenfarm cultivar was more sensitive. The selection of Italian ryegrass cultivars for greater tolerance to saline environment would allow greater productivity from large saline lands.
