In this study, the effect of scrap ratio on the mechanical properties of Zr alloys was studied. Oxygen content in the ingot cake increased rapidly with increasing fraction of scrap, which can be attributed to the surface oxide of scrap including small pieces of turning, chips, etc. Iron content did not increase much with the increasing addition of scrap, suggesting scrap materials was well reserved in the iron-free container. As-cast structure of Zr alloy with the scrap:sponge ratio displayed plate/or needle ${\alpha}$ phase and no appreciable change of the cast structure was observed with change of scrap fraction. The strength increases with increasing fraction of scrap, which can be attributed to the increase of oxygen content. The ductility decreased slightly with increase of scrap fraction. Dislocation-oxygen interaction is known to increase the strength at the expense of ductility. Ingot cake with intentionally added $Fe_2O_3$ exhibited the drastic decrease of the formability, even exhibited the brittle fracture behavior during rolling. The oxidation resistance, however, increased with the increase of scrap fraction because of high oxygen content, which may prevent more penetration and diffusion of oxygen into matrix.
The effects of scrap content on the impact and fatigue properties were investigated in AC4A alloy. The impact absorbed energy of as-cast specimens were 3.61, 3.56, 3.47, and 3.08 Joules, respectively, when scrap contents of the specimens were 0, 20, 35, and 50%. And, the corresponding energy levels of the T6 heat-treated condition were 3.66, 3.48, 3.25, and 2.96 Joule. In the same way, the fatigue strength values of the as-cast specimens were 53.2, 52.0, 48.4, and 43.8MPa, respectively, and the corresponding fatigue strengths of the T6 heat-treatment specimens were 85.4, 75.7, 60.6, and 51.2 MPa. Impact absorbed energy and fatigue strength decreased as scrap content of the specimen increased. It is assumed that impact absorbed energy decreased owing to the presence of oxide films, which act as branches of 2nd cracks; fatigue strength also decreased with decreased deflection of the fatigue crack path as the scrap content of the specimens increased.
In this study, deoxidation of Ti scrap using liquid calcium was investigated. Experiments were conducted in a closed stainless steel chamber under Ar atmosphere during 30 to 90 minutes. Oxygen content of Ti scrap was reduced from 0.54 to 0.19 wt% by calciothermic reduction in 30 minutes at $1000^{\circ}C$ and 2.5 Ti/Ca mass ratio. By the calciothermic reduction of Ti scrap for 30 minutes under the reaction temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$ and 2.5 Ti/Ca mass, a minimum oxygen content of about 0.126 wt% in Ti scrap was obtained.
In this study, Ti powder was fabricated from Ti scrap by the Hydrogenation-Dehydrogenation (HDH) method. Hydrogenation reactions of Ti scrap occurred at near 450 $^{\circ}C$ with a sudden increase in the reaction temperature and the decreasing pressure of hydrogen gas during the hydrogenation process in the furnace. The dehydrogenation process was also carried out at 750 $^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in a vacuum of $10^{-4}$ torr. After the HDH process, a deoxidation treatment was carried out with the Ca(purity: 99.5) at 700 $^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in the vacuum system. It was found that the oxidation content of Ti powder that was deoxidized with Ca showed noticeably lower values, compared to the content obtained by HDH process. In order to fabricate Ti compacts, Ti powder was sintered at $1100\sim1400^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs under a vacuum of $10^{-4}$ torr. The relative density of compact was 94.9% at 1300 $^{\circ}C$. After sintering, all of the Ti compacts showed brittle fracture behavior, which occurred in an elastic range with short plastic yielding up to a peak stress.
The effects of scrap content on the hot tearing property and tensile property were investigated in AC2BS alloy. The hot tearing strengths were $16.4kgf/cm^2$, $15.2kgf/cm^2$, $14.9kgf/cm^2$ and $13.3kgf/cm^2$, respectively, under the constant solid fraction of 29.3% when the scrap contents of the specimens were 0%, 20%, 35% and 50%. In the same way, tensile strengths of the as-cast condition were $24.5kgf/mm^2$, $23.7kgf/mm^2$, $17.3kgf/mm^2$ and $16.0kgf/mm^2$, respectively, and the corresponding tensile strengths of the T6 heat treatment condition were $27.2kgf/mm^2$, $26.7kgf/mm^2$, $24.2kgf/mm^2$ and $23.9kgf/mm^2$. Hot tearing strength and tensile strength decreased as scrap content of the specimen increased. According to the evaluation of the quantitative hot tearing and tensile test results, the decrease of these strengths is due to the presence of oxide films which act as crack initiation site of the specimens. Therefore, elimination of oxide films of aluminum melt to maintain melt cleanliness is required.
Titanium scrap was re-melted and refined by using a DC-ESR (Direct Current Electro Slag Remelting) apparatus. A graphite rod was used as an anode. The used slag was $CaF_2-TiO_2-CaO$ slag system. The effect of slag composition on the shape and oxygen content of re-melted ingot was studied. The titanium ingot was produced very well from the $CaF_2-TiO_2$ slag system, and the oxygen content of the ingot was less than that of titanium scrap. The addition of CaO into $CaF_2-TiO_2$ slag system made the bad shape of titanium ingot. The oxygen content of the ingot was also higher than that of titanium scrap.
The effect of ball milling conditions in the milling of aluminium foil scraps was studied. Initial foil thickness, ball size. content of oleic acid. weight ratio of mineral spirits/foil. charged amount of foil were varied in wet ball milling process. It is impossible to make flake powders by milling of foil scraps with thickness $120 \mum$. As foil thickness decreases from $60\mum$ to $6.5\mum$, Mean size of powder milled for 30 h decreases from 107 µm to 17 µm. Bigger ball is slightly beneficial for milling of foils to the flake powders due to the larger impact energy produced by them. It is impossible to mill the foil without oleic acid to fabricate the flake powder. As content of oleic acid increases from 1.5 % to 5 %, mean size of flake powder milled for 30 h is drastically decreased. For the mineral spirits content below 50 %, foil scrap was not milled because sliding motion of balls by lubricant effect between balls and wall of container. As weight ratio of mineral spirits and foil increase over 100 %, foils were milled powders with mean powder size 15 - 20 때 irrespective of mineral spirits content due to reduced lubricant effect. As charged amount of foil decreases, mean powder size decreases due to increased collision frequency between ball and foil.

In the view point of the environmental conservation and the energy reduction, the recycling of metal scrap is coming as one of the global subjects in the world. In this study, the movement of intermetallics with electromagnetic force in a melt of a scrap of Al-Si-Cu alloy (JIS ADC12), which was widely used in diecasting process, was investigated in order to eliminate the Fe element, which was usually accumulated in a scrap. In this study, we applied electromagnetic method to eliminate Fe element in ADC12 aluminum alloy scrap which contains 1.64wt.% Fe and the effects of electromagnetic force on the particle movement was visualized and confirmed by water modeling and experiment. As a result, the Fe intermetallic compounds are moved to the direction opposite to that of the electromagnetic force as the force applies, thus eliminated from the bulk metal. Therefore, the content of Fe in matrix decreased from 1.64wt.% to 0.45wt.%.
The separation of valuable metals from IC chip scrap generated by domestic electronic company was carried out using the mechanical beneficiation such as shredding, crushing, screening and magnetic separation. The distribution of metals in various sizes of crushed IC chip scrap was investigated and metals present in crushed products was separated with the magnetic separator. The particle size distribution of crushed IC chip scrap was 7.5% for +3mm, 17.0% for 3~1mm and 75.5% for -1mm. The weight loss of crushed IC chip scrap was 18% when roasted at $700^{\circ}C$. The content of metals was 96% for +3~1mm, 13% for 1~0.595mm, 3.7% for 0.95~0.5. Au of 99% was present in -1mm crushed IC chip scrap. Ni, Fe, Cu, Sn and Pb were separated from crushed IC chip scrap by the magnetic separator under 700 and 2, 500 Gauss.
In spite of low energy requirement, and operation and construction cost, biofilters with soil beds have not been operated efficiently. Because of excess moisture in winter and rainy periods, saturated pores in the bed prevent passage and sorption of odorous compounds. Sometimes this results in septic conditions that release previously sorbed and oxidized sulfur. Therefore, an economical and effective alternative needs to be developed. The objectives of this study were to confirm applicability of the granular scrap tires with compost for treating odorous gas as well as to obtain optimum design parameters for proposed system. In lab-scaled test, multiple stage reactors had lower headloss than a single stage reactor and less headloss was occurred for the gas with higher moisture content. For practical purpose, pilot-scaled reactor was operated to remove odor from septic tank, manure and animal wastewater treatment plant and composting machine. According to the results of pilot scaled test, $H_2S$ can be always removed completely and ammonia/amine can be removed excellently when proper moisture content is provided. The results from lab and pilot test showed that granular scrap tire could be replaced with soil as supporting material for biofilter showed excellent drainage because of its ability to reject moisture.
