Strain Rate Self-Sensing for a Cantilevered Piezoelectric Beam

  • This paper deals with the analytical modeling, and the experimental verification of the strain rate self-sensing method using a hybrid adaptive filter for a cantilevered piezoelectric beam. The piezoelectric beam consists of two laminated lead zirconium titanates (PZT) on a metal shim. A mathematical model of the beam dynamics is derived by Hamilton's principle and the accuracy of the modeling is verified through the comparison with experimental results. For the strain rate estimation of the cantilevered piezoelectric beam, a self-sensing mechanism using a hybrid adaptive filter is considered. The discrete parts of this mechanism are realized by the DS1103 DSP board manufactured by dSPACE$\^$TM/. The efficacy of this method is investigated through the comparison of experimental results with the predictions from the derived analytical model.

Water-Entry Induced Cavity Pressure

  • The pressure in a water-entry induced cavity, is analyzed up to the closed cavity (bubble). Water-entry is a highly transient phenomenon, and the evolution of the water-entry cavity must be explained by considering the entry speed, shape of the solid body, atmosphere pressure, and cavity pressure as the primary variables. This work is an extension of the cavity dynamics model recently reported by Lee (l997a). To extend the model for a wide range of entry speeds the cavity pressure is calculated from a one-dimensional quasi-steady flow model. The estimation of the cavity pressure allows us to explain the experimentally observed surface closure phenomena at low entry speeds. Predictions for the time of surface closure are compared with the published experimental data.

  • In this paper, various webs of I-shaped beam used in aircraft spars are examined. Under the assumption that an aircraft spar is a cantilevered beam with a constant cross-section and is subjected to only bending, four kinds of webs are analyzed for three different sizes. To enable comparison, each hole has the same area and are subjected to the same load by using EDISON 2D Continuum analysis. While circular hole is the most often used, elliptic one is obtained with the minimum von-Mises stress by about 40% decreased. To verify the results gathered by EDISON, comparison was made with ANSYS and analytic predictions obtained with the stress intensity factor K. As comparison shows insignificant discrepancies, it is concluded that a well-designed beam with elliptic holes will be the most efficient spar regarding weight to rigidity ratio in terms of the bending stress.

Model updation using multiple parameters influencing servoelastic response of a flexible aircraft

  • In a flexible airvehicle, an assessment of the structural coupling levels through analysis and experiments provides structural data for the design of notch filters which are generally utilized in the flight control system to attenuate the flexible response pickup. This is necessitated as during flight, closed loop control actuation driven with flexible response inputs could lead to stability and performance related problems. In the present work, critical parameters influencing servoelastic response have been identified. A sensitivity study has been carried out to assess the extent of influence of each parameter. A multi-parameter tuning approach has been implemented to achieve an enhanced analytical model for improved predictions of aircraft servoelastic response. To illustrate the model updation approach, initial and improved test analysis correlation of lateral servoelastic responses for a generic flexible airvehicle are presented.

Rapid Nondestructive Prediction of Multiple Quality Attributes for Different Commercial Meat Cut Types Using Optical System

  • There are differences of spectral characteristics between different types of meat cut, which means the model established using only one type of meat cut for meat quality prediction is not suitable for other meat cut types. A novel portable visible and near-infrared (Vis/NIR) optical system was used to simultaneously predict multiple quality indicators for different commercial meat cut types (silverside, back strap, oyster, fillet, thick flank, and tenderloin) from Small-tailed Han sheep. The correlation coefficients of the calibration set (Rc) and prediction set (Rp) of the optimal prediction models were 0.82 and 0.81 for pH, 0.88 and 0.84 for L*, 0.83 and 0.78 for a*, 0.83 and 0.82 for b*, 0.94 and 0.86 for cooking loss, 0.90 and 0.88 for shear force, 0.84 and 0.83 for protein, 0.93 and 0.83 for fat, 0.92 and 0.87 for moisture contents, respectively. This study demonstrates that Vis/NIR spectroscopy is a promising tool to achieve the predictions of multiple quality parameters for different commercial meat cut types.

A New Charge Analysis Derived From the Results of Semi-Emprical Mo-Lcao Calculation

  • In this study we present a new approach for computing the partial atomic charge derived from the wavefunctions of molecules. This charge, which we call the "y_charge", was calculated by taking into account the energy level and orbital populations in each molecular orbital (MO). The charge calculations were performed in the software, which was developed by us, developed using the C# programming language. Partial atomic charges cannot be calculated directly from quantum mechanics. According to a partitioning function, the electron density of constituent molecular atoms depends on the electrostatic attraction field of the nucleus. Taking into account the Boltzmann population of each MO as a function of its energy and temperature we obtain a formula of partial charges.

Mean Streamline Analysis for Performance Prediction of Cross- Flow Fans

  • This paper presents the mean streamline analysis using the empirical loss correlations for performance prediction of cross-flow fans. Comparison of overall performance predictions with test data of a cross-flow fan system with a simplified vortex wall scroll casing and with the published experimental characteristics for a cross-flow fan has been carried out to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method. Predicted performance curves by the present mean streamline analysis agree well with experimental data for two different cross-flow fans over the normal operating conditions. The prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently as a tool for the preliminary design and performance analysis of general-purpose cross-flow fans.

Global Changing of Consumer Behavior to Retail Distribution due to Pandemic of COVID-19: A Systematic Review

  • Purpose: Consumers have unique behaviors that are classified based on their interests and considerations before buying. They are predicted will change due to the pandemic of COVID-19. This study provides insights for retailers about the dynamic of consumer behavior before and during the pandemic, including future predictions. Research design, data and methodology: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement was applied in this study. Seven studies that were selected from five databases meet the criteria for cohort and cross-sectional analyses of gender, age, store types, and environmental concerns. Results: Consumer's gender and age contribute to consumer behavior change. Both offline and online stores can be integrated as omnichannel rather than substitute each other. Product distribution and consumer budget need to be reevaluated by retailers, while internet security is the most essential factor when developing their online transactions. Conclusions: COVID-19 pandemic has a significant impact on changing consumer behavior in most countries. Retailers are encouraged to adapt to the changes by modifying their business model with technology. However, it is still speculated and cannot be generalized due to different cultural and contextual factors. Future studies are always needed to synchronize along with the transition of consumers' behavior.

CONSTRAINTS ON A-DECAYING COSMOLOGY FROM OBSERVATIONAL POINT OF VIEW

  • To constrain the values of the model parameters for the cosmological models involving the time-decaying $\Lambda$ term, we have computed sets of theoretical predictions for the N-m relation of galaxies as well as the CMB angular power spectrum: three types of variation, viz., ${\Lambda}{\propto} T^{-1},\;a^{-m}$, and $H^n$ are thereby assumed following Overduin & Cooperstock (1998), although we concentrate here on the discussion of the results obtained from the first type. Our results for the N-m relation indicate that the observed excess of the galaxy counts N in the faint region beyond the blue apparent magnitude 24 can be reasonably well accounted for with the value of ${\iota}$ in the range between 0.2 and 1. Furthermore, a comparison of our computational results of the CMB spectra with the observational data shows that the models with a mild degree of the $\Lambda$ term decay, viz., with the value of ${\iota}{\le}$0.4, are favorable. In this case, the age of our universe turns out to be larger than or equal to 14 Gyr, the lower limit inferred from some Uranium datings.

Phrase-based Topic and Sentiment Detection and Tracking Model using Incremental HDP

  • Sentiments can profoundly affect individual behavior as well as decision-making. Confronted with the ever-increasing amount of review information available online, it is desirable to provide an effective sentiment model to both detect and organize the available information to improve understanding, and to present the information in a more constructive way for consumers. This study developed a unified phrase-based topic and sentiment detection model, combined with a tracking model using incremental hierarchical dirichlet allocation (PTSM_IHDP). This model was proposed to discover the evolutionary trend of topic-based sentiments from online reviews. PTSM_IHDP model firstly assumed that each review document has been composed by a series of independent phrases, which can be represented as both topic information and sentiment information. PTSM_IHDP model secondly depended on an improved time-dependency non-parametric Bayesian model, integrating incremental hierarchical dirichlet allocation, to estimate the optimal number of topics by incrementally building an up-to-date model. To evaluate the effectiveness of our model, we tested our model on a collected dataset, and compared the result with the predictions of traditional models. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of our model compared to several state-of-the-art methods.
