Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica infections in eastern great egrets (Ardea alba modesta)

  • Five eastern great egrets with a history of ataxia, wry neck, and wet feathers were submitted to the Veterinary Diagnostic Center for pathologic examination. Slightly enlarged livers with diffuse white-grayish nodules were observed. Microscopically, the hepatic and lung parenchyma contained granulomatous lesions consisting of central necrosis. Some hearts showed myofiber necrosis with infiltration of histiocytes and heterophils. Partial 16SrRNA and gyrB gene sequences of all isolates showed high similarities (99-100%) to those of Salmonella (S.) enterica subsp. enterica. Based on pathological and molecular biological results, S. enterica subsp. enterica systemic infections were diagnosed in eastern great egrets of Korea.

Development of a Competency-Based Master Gardener Coordinator Curriculum: Focusing on Public Service Rural Extension Workers

  • The purpose of this study was to establish the role of master gardener coordinators and develop an education program to enhance their job competencies. To analyze and develop the new job of master gardener coordinator, we used the CBC method for curriculum development. The research findings can be summarized as follows. The analysis result of need and importance of education based on the performance level and demand level revealed 20 core competencies, which were classified into organizational education, learning by experience, individual learning, low-priority competencies for program development, with focus on the importance and need for education. The 17 courses are comprised of Eastern and Western Garden History, Understanding of Community Garden, Garden Aesthetics and Environmental Design, Master Gardener's Mission & Management, Garden Plants, and Garden Design and Practice etc. and the curriculum is 33 hours in total. The master gardener coordinator education program was conducted on 73 rural extension workers and the curriculum was evaluated by those who completed the program. The overall satisfaction was 4.29 and 97.1% of the trainees decided that the program would help them perform their duties. The analysis result discovered that all 20 core competencies increased after the program. As a result of conducting contingent valuation to determine the value of the program, willingness to pay (WTP) per hour was KRW 33,223 and the total WTP was KRW 1.096 million, which, when multiplied by 73 participants, is approximately KRW 80.008 million. This is relatively higher than the budget used (KRW 22.943 million), indicating that the program is worth it.

  • DNA barcoding, an inventory of DNA sequences from a standardized genomic region, provides a bio-barcode for identifying and discovering species. Several recent studies suggest that the sequence diversity in a 648 bp region of the mitochondrial gene for cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) might serve as a DNA barcode for identifying animal species such as North American birds, insects and fishes. The present study tested the effectiveness of a COI barcode in discriminating Korean bird species. We determined the 5' terminus of the COI barcode for 92 species of Korean birds and found that species identification was unambiguous; the genetic differences between closely related species were, on average, 25 times higher than the differences within species. We identified only one misidentified species out of 239 specimens in a genetic resource bank, so confirming the accuracy of species identification in the banking system. We also identified two potential composite species, calling for further investigation using more samples. The finding of large COI sequence differences between species confirms the effectiveness of COI barcodes for identifying Korean bird species. To bring greater reliability to the identification of species, increased intra- and interspecies sampling, as well as supplementation of the mitochondrial barcodes with nuclear ones, is needed.

  • SNe light curves have been used to understand the expansion history of the universe, and a lot of efforts have gone into understanding the overall shape of the radioactively powered light curve. However, we still have little direct observational evidence for the theorized SN progenitor systems. Recent studies suggest that the light curve of a supernova shortly after its explosion (< 1 day) contains valuable information about its progenitor system and can be used to set a limit on the progenitor size, R*. In order to catch the early light curve of SNe explosion and understand SNe progenitors, we are performing a ~8hr interval monitoring survey of nearby galaxies (d < 50 Mpc) with 1-m class telescopes around the world. Through this survey, we expect to catch the very early precursor emission as faint as R=21 mag (~0.1 Rsun for the progenitor). In this poster, we outline this project, and present a few scientific highlights, such as the early light curve of SN 2015F in NGC 2442.

Application and Developmental Strategies for Community-Based Injury Prevention Programs of the International Safe Communities Movement in Korea

  • Purpose: Safety of humans is an important factor that affects health overall, and injuries are one of the major public-health problems in the world. The purposes of this study were to describe the International safe Community movement which contributes to the injury prevention and safety promotion all over the world, and to identify out the application and developmental strategies for Korea. Methods: A review was done of previous research, reviews, and reports on the history, concepts, basic principles, and recommendations for actions of the Safe Community. Results: For this study, the application strategies of the International Safe Community movement in Korea were examined to deduce the strengths of the safe Community program. Community-based injury prevention work according to the International Safe Community model is a successful and cost-effective way of reducing injuries in the community. Conclusion: Through the International Safe Community program, communities are able to realize a healthy community and achieve improved quality of lives for the people, which is the ultimate objective of the Safe Community model. In addition, it will contribute to the economic vitalization and gain through energy and enhancement of productivity of people.

  • Hanwoo (Korean cattle) is the native, taurine type of cattle breed of Korea and its history as a draft animal dates back to 5000 Years. In earlier times Hanwoo was used extensively for farming, transportation. Over the period of time, Hanwoo has changed to be meat type cattle. Full-scale production of Hanwoo as meat-type cattle has occurred since 1960s with the rapid growth of the Korean economy. Hanwoo is one of the most economically important species in Korea as it is a significant source of nutrition to the Korean people. Hanwoo beef is the most cherished food of Korea. One of the main goals of researchers is to increase the meat quality, quantity and taste of the beef. In this review we describe the origin, domestication of Hanwoo cattle and breeding program initiated from 1980's. Moreover the advent of technological advancement had provided us a platform to perform genome wide selection on economic traits and its implementation into traditional breeding programs.

  • Health Belief Model is a socio-psychological theory of decision making to individual health-related behaviors. This study was aimed to develop an effective education program for hypertension based on health belief model. The main factors of health belief model were investigated by focus group interview (FGI) with 23 hypertensive or prehypertensive subjects aged over fifty years. 'Perceived susceptibility' to hypertension was family history, neglect of health care, preference for salty food, broth of soup and stew. Lifelong medication, complications, and medical costs were reported as 'perceived severity' of hypertension. 'Perceived benefits' of hypertension management were decrease of medicinal dose, reduction of medical costs, and healthy eating habits of the family, while 'perceived barriers' were lack of palatability of low salt diet, convenience-oriented dietary habits, and limited choice of foods when eating out. Subjects mentioned TV health programs, public health center programs, and advice from doctors and family as 'cues to action' of hypertension management. These qualitative information provided basis for developing a nutrition education program for hypertension which could be implemented in the public health center. Eight week program was composed of understanding hypertension, risk factor management (eating habits, weight), low salt diet (principles, cooking), advanced management for healthy diet in 2 sessions, and summary. Each session was designed to alert the susceptibility and severity, to emphasize the benefits, and to reduce the barriers by providing dietary monitoring, practical advice, and action tips.

경남 진주에서 여치 Gampsocleis sedakovi abscura Walker의 생활사에 관한 연구 (Life Cycle of Gampsocleis sedakovi abscura Walker (Orthoptera:Tettigoniidae) in Jinju, Gyeongnam)

  • 본 연구는 경남 진주에서 여름철에 풀숲에서 아름다운 소리를 들려주는 정서곤충의 한 종류인 여치(Gampsocleis sedakovi abscura Walker)에 관한 생활사를 3년간 (2005~2007)에 조사한 결과이다. 여치는 1년에 1세대 발생하며, 성충의 몸길이는 암컷이 60 mm정도이며 수컷은 50 mm정도이었다. 몸의 색깔은 녹색 또는 암갈색의 두 종류가 있었다. 땅 속에서 알 상태로 월동하며, 야외에서 3월 상순부터 약충을 볼 수 있었으며 성충의 우화 최성기는 7월 상순이었다. 야외에서 알기간이 269일, 약충기간이 88일로 성충이 되기까지 357일이 걸렸다. 3년간 평균 산란기간은 63일이었고, 산란수는 평균 94개였다. 평균수명은 암컷이 90일, 수컷이 82일이었으며, 성비는 암컷이 52%이었다. 일일 중 성충의 우화는 오전 8시에서 10시 사이가 가장 많았다.

  • 공공도서관 웹사이트를 통해 제공되는 도서관 프로그램 정보는 대부분 비정형 데이터로 서지정보와 같이 체계적으로 생산하고 활용할 수 없어 기존의 도서관 빅데이터 연구나 사례에서 충분히 활용하지 못하고 있으며 웹사이트 개편이나 담당자 변경 시 사라질 위험도 있다. 이 연구에서는 비정형으로 생산되는 공공도서관 문화프로그램 및 커뮤니티 서비스 데이터를 수집, 분석하여 서지데이터와 연계하여 활용할 수 있는 데이터 스키마를 개발하고, 공공도서관 문화프로그램과 커뮤니티 서비스 데이터의 공유 및 활용, 그리고 문화프로그램 기획자인 사서간의 정보 채널로서 역할을 할 수 있는 도서관 빅데이터 플랫폼 구축안을 제시하였다. 이를 통해 서지데이터에 문화프로그램과 커뮤니티 서비스 정보를 연계함으로써 장서 기반 서비스를 확충할 수 있고 도서관 웹사이트에 게재되는 도서관 프로그램 데이터를 도서관 빅데이터 플랫폼으로 통합 관리함으로써 업무의 연속성을 확보하고, 개별 도서관의 특화된 서비스 이력을 체계적으로 관리·보존할 수 있다.

내포 병렬성을 가지는 OpenMP 프로그램의 최초 경합 탐지 (Detecting the First Race in OpenMP Program with Nested Parallelism)

  • 공유 변수를 가지는 병렬 프로그램의 오류 수정에서 경합 탐지는 중요하다. 왜냐하면, 경합은 프로그램의 비결정적인 수행을 유발하기 때문이다. 기존에 제시된 병렬 프로그램의 오류 수정 기법인 수행중 탐지 기법은 내포된 병렬 프로그램에서 최초 경합 탐지를 보장할 수 없다. 최초 경합을 수정하면 이후에 발생하는 경합들이 나타나지 않을 수 있으므로, 최초경합의 탐지는 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 내포 병렬 루프 프로그램을 대상으로 반복 수행을 통해서 최초경합을 탐지하는 기법을 제시한다. 반복 수행의 횟수는 최악의 경우에 프로그램의 내포 깊이 만큼이며 각 수행시의 효율성은 공유변수의 개수를 V, 프로그램의 최대 병렬성을 T라 할 때, 공간 복잡도 O(VT)와 시간 복잡도 O(T)를 가지므로 기존의 수행중 탐지 기법과 동일하다. 그러므로 본 기법은 효과적이고 실용적인 오류 수정을 가능하게 한다.
