  • The concepts of new classes of mappings are introduced in the spaces which are more general space than the usual metric spaces. The existence and uniqueness of common fixed points and fixed point results are established in the setting of complete complex valued b-metric spaces. An illustration is given by establishing the existence of solution of periodic differential equations in the framework of a complete complex valued b-metric spaces.

  • An endocellulase-free multienzyme complex was produced by a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium, Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum strain NOI-1, when grown on xylan. The temperature and pH optima for growth were $60^{\circ}C$ and 6.0, respectively. The bacterial cells were found to adhere to insoluble xylan and Avicel. A scanning electron microscopy analysis showed the adhesion of xylan to the cells. An endocellulase-free multienzyme complex was isolated from the crude enzyme of strain NOI-1 by affinity purification on cellulose and Sephacryl S-300 gel filtration. The molecular mass of the multienzyme complex was estimated to be about 1,200 kDa. The multienzyme complex showed one protein on native PAGE, one xylanase on a native zymogram, 21 proteins on SDS-PAGE, and 5 xylanases on a SDS zymogram. The multienzyme complex consisted of xylanase, ${\beta}$-xylosidase, ${\alpha}$-L-arabinofuranosidase, ${\beta}$-glucosidase, and cellobiohydrolase. The multienzyme complex was effective in hydrolyzing xylan and corn hulls. This is the first report of an endocellulase-free multienzyme complex produced by a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium, T. thermosaccharolyticum strain NOI-1.

  • Structural parameter variation effects (changing the coplanar gap under different discharge dimensions) and use of complex gas mixtures (He, Ne, Ar and Xe) in mercury-free fluorescent lamps are studied in this paper. Pure Neon gas is the best buffer gas for obtaining high luminous efficiency in mercury-free fluorescent lamps. It is shown that with a shorter coplanar gap (30mm), a high luminous efficiency can be obtained at low operating voltage, as well as high luminance uniformity and stable discharge with a Ne-Xe 20% gas mixture.

  • Maxillary defects are inherently complex because they generally involve more than one midfacial component. In addition, most maxillary defects are composite in nature, and often require bony support, as well as a mucosal lining for reconstruction. Therefore, midfacial bone and soft tissue defects present a unique challenge because they require a complex arrangement of tissues in a relatively limited space. This might be difficult to achieve only with free osteocutaneous flaps. The use of bone grafts allows greater flexibility in a reconstruction but is limited by graft resorption. We report a case of a patient reconstructed with a lateral arm free flap, iliac bone graft, sagital split ramus osteotomy for the reconstruction of a right maxillary defect zygomatico-maxillary defect caused by a zygomatico-maxillary malignant tumor resection.

  • In an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system, conventional interpolation techniques cannot correctly balance performance and overhead when estimating dynamic long-delay channels in single frequency networks (SFNs). In this study, classical filter analysis and design methods are employed to derive a complex interpolator for maximizing the resistible echo delay in a channel estimator on the basis of the correlation between frequency domain interpolating and time domain windowing. The coefficient computation of the complex interpolator requires a key parameter, i.e., channel length, which is obtained in the frequency domain with a tentative estimation scheme having low implementation complexity. The proposed complex adaptive interpolator is verified in a simulated digital video broadcasting for terrestrial/handheld receiver. The simulation results indicate that the designed channel estimator can not only handle SFN echoes with more than $200{\mu}s$ delay but also achieve a bit-error rate performance close to the optimum minimum mean square error method, which significantly outperforms conventional channel estimation methods, while preserving a low implementation cost in a short-delay channel.

  • This paper addresses the free and transient responses of a SDOF linear complex stiffness system by making use of the Hilbert transform and the convolution integral. Because the second-order differential equation of motion having the complex stiffness give rise to the conjugate complex eigen values, its time-domain analysis using the standard time integration scheme suffers from the numerical instability and divergence. In order to overcome this problem, the transient response of the linear complex stiffness system is obtained by the convolution integral of a green function which corresponds to the unit-impulse free vibration response of the complex system. The damped free vibration of the complex system is theoretically derived by making use of the state-space formulation and the Hilbert transform. The convolution integral is implemented by piecewise-linearly interpolating the external force and by superimposing the transient responses of discretized piecewise impulse forces. The numerical experiments are carried out to verify the proposed time-domain analysis method, and the correlation between the real and imaginary parts in the free and transient responses is also investigated.

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is neurodegenerative disease, characterized by the progressive decline of memory, cognitive functions, and changes in personality. The major pathological features in postmortem brains are neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid beta ($A{\beta}$) deposits. The majority of AD cases are sporadic and age-related. Although AD pathogenesis has not been established, aging and declining mitochondrial function has been associated. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been observed in AD patients' brains and AD mice models, and the mice with a genetic defect in mitochondrial complex I showed enhanced $A{\beta}$ level in vivo. To elucidate the role of mitochondrial complex I in AD, we used SH-SY5Y cells transfected with DNA constructs expressing human amyloid precursor protein (APP) or human Swedish APP mutant (APP-swe). The expression of APP-swe increased the level of $A{\beta}$ protein in comparison with control. When complex I was inhibited by rotenone, the increase of ROS level was remarkably higher in the cells overexpressing APP-swe compared to control. The number of dead cell was significantly increased in APP-swe-expressing cells by complex I inhibition. We suggest that complex I dysfunction accelerate amyloid toxicity and mitochondrial complex I dysfunction in aging may contribute to the pathogenesis of sporadic AD.

  • Complex permittivities of reference liquids were measured by a liquid holder of slotted coaxial line with a movable probe at mobile communication frequencies. The validity of the liquid measurement system was checked by experimental tests with the reference liquids proposed in IEEE Std. 1528-200X or IEC 106/61/CDV.

  • This paper presents a method to determine the propagation properties in the junctions between straight and bent waveguides using cylindrical functions of complex order. The proposed method was succeeded by developing the method of numerical calculation of cylindrical functions of complex order. As a result, we numerically calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients in the junctions in various situations, and we compare these results with the results by the perturbation method.

  • In this article, we consider properties of transcendental meromorphic solutions of the complex differential-difference equation $$P_n(z)f^{(n)}(2+{\eta}_n)+{\cdots}+P_1(z)f^{\prime}(z+{\eta}_1)+P_0(z)f(z+{\eta}_0)=0$$, and its non-homogeneous equation. Our results extend earlier results by Liu et al. [9].
