A Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Healthy School Canteen Program at Middle and High Schools (중.고등학교 건강매점사업의 비용편익분석)

  • Objectives: The economic evaluation of health promotion programs has increasingly become an imperative activity for securing public fund or budget. The purpose of this study is to conduct an economic evaluation for the healthy school canteen program using the contingent valuation method(CVM). Methods: To estimate the benefit from the healthy school canteen program, double-bounded dichotomous choice method as a sort of willingness to pay was employed. Four hundred parents who lived in Seoul and have students at middle or high schools, were administrated by semi-constructive questionnaire containing the necessary information for benefit estimation. Cost estimation of healthy school canteen program was made referring to three types of pilot programs. Finally, the benefit against the cost was worked out according to the three levels of estimated cost. Results: Cost estimate is 8,488 and 9,311 won depending on the two senarios about how to invest on the program, respectably. The results of benefit estimate shows that the average cost willingness to pay(WTP) for healthy school canteen program is 21,275 won(16,963-59,838 won, 95% CI) and total benefits turned out 14.7 billion won. According to the cost-benefit analysis, average benefit-cost ratio is from 2.3 to 3.6. Conclusions: Healthy school canteen program could be economically accepted, and government can take consideration of expanding beneficiaries of healthy school canteen program for health promotion.

  • Recently, in rural areas have been occurred closed school due to reduce children of people who consider educational environment. In July 2009 statistic, Closed school are ut to 3,348; sale process(61%), lease(25%), neglect(14%). Closed school are not only local community education, but also to act as cultural and historical role. First of all, it will be utilized public facilities as well as welfare facilities for local residents. In this study suggests the welfare facility where is remodelled as good case so that it will use as a data when closed school need remodeling. The main contents is as follows; it is set the slope next to the school building, a classroom is remodelled 2 triple rooms which are installed Ondol and a toilet, teacher's room is converted into the canteen, corridors are converted into the kitchen. Having good condition in the area, close school is appropriate to use welfare facility and also effective to convert teacher's space into normal space, canteen, kitchen. Finally, developed 2~5 composition type of elderly facility.

Investigation of Military Foodservice Operation (군대급식 취사장 운영 현황 조사)

  • The present study attempted to investigate the military foodservice operation by conducting survey to foodservice managers. Surveys for managers of military foodservice operations were conducted in November, 2008 by visiting Consolidated Army Logistics School located in Daejeon during the time of training. Surveys for military foodservice officers and dietitian were sent by mail. The questionnaire was composed of the questions asking the general operation of military canteen, the self-concious specialty of military foodservice, and the needs assigning dietitian to each military unit. From the results of this study, it came up with the needs to draw up the plan to improve the foodservice specialty of canteen managers. One of the solution would assign dietitian to each military foodservice unit. Also, the facilities need to be equipped for various way of cooking to improve the satisfaction of soldiers. The results of this study would provide the data for making policy as well as arose academic interest to military foodservice.

The Effects of Food-Related Lifestyle on Carbonated Beverage Consumption Behavior of the Middle School Students (식생활 라이프스타일이 중학생의 탄산음료 소비 형태에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze middle students' carbonated beverages selection and consumption behaviors depending on their food-related lifestyle. Data was collected from 307 middle students in Incheon region through a self-administered questionnaire. According to the results of the factor analysis, food-related lifestyle showed that the average is more than 3.0, 0.800 in Cronbach alpha coefficient. There were significant differences in carbonated beverages preference according to health seeking, easy seeking, popularity seeking, and safety seeking type (p<0.05). Also easy seeking and popularity seeking type lifestyle showed significant differences in the reason to drink carbonated drinks (p<0.05), especially school canteen amenities tended to pursue the highest fashion. A significant significance positive result of the consumption of carbonated beverages (p<0.01) was shown for the easy seeking type. A significant positive result of the consumption of carbonated beverages (p<0.01) was shown for the taste seeking and safety seeking type. Analysis of the relationship between carbonated beverage consumption, and form factor showed a high correlation coefficient of 0.617 and with brand design, while the taste and the price were (p<0.05) 0.446, and 0.437 in order to design and calories, respectively.
