  • Industrial heritage resources produced by industrial activities have historical and conservative values and value as cultural properties as they serve as a medium connecting the past, present, and future. In other words, Industrial heritage resources should be used, managed, and preserved simultaneously as important records and evidence for the future. Metadata is well known as a necessary and important factor for the use, management, and preservation of information resources. In particular, in order to describe various industrial heritage resources that have historical, cultural, and conservative values, metadata elements from various perspectives are needed to relate to the story, type etc. of data. Therefore, this study attempted to design metadata elements that can comprehensively describe different types of industrial heritage resources. And we designed metadata that suited for the purpose of using, managing, and preserving industrial heritage resources, through mapping and combination between industrial heritage-related metadata. As a result, metadata was grouped into five types(administrative, descriptive, preservation, technical, use) and prepared into a total of 25 higher & 86 lower elements.

  • The mediator-based system integrates heterogeneous information systems with the flexible manner. But it does not give much attention on the query optimization issues, especially for the query reusing. The other thing is that it does not use standardized metadata for schema matching. To improve this two issues, we propose mediator-based Distributed Information Integration System (DIIS) which uses query caching regarding performance and uses ISO/IEC 11179 metadata registry in terms of standardization. The DIIS is designed to provide decision-making support, which logically integrates the distributed heterogeneous business information systems based on the Web environment. We designed the system in the aspect of three-layer expression formula architecture using the layered pattern to improve the system reusability and to facilitate the system maintenance. The functionality and flow of core components of three-layer architecture are expressed in terms of process line diagrams and assembly line diagrams of Eriksson Penker Extension Model (EPEM), a methodology of an extension of UML. For the implementation, Supply Chain Management (SCM) domain is used. And we used the Web-based environment for user interface. The DIIS supports functions of query caching and query reusability through Query Function Manager (QFM) and Query Function Repository (QFR) such that it enhances the query processing speed and query reusability by caching the frequently used queries and optimizing the query cost. The DIIS solves the diverse heterogeneity problems by mapping MetaData Registry (MDR) based on ISO/IEC 11179 and Schema Repository (SCR).

  • Advanced Intelligent Network(AIN) and X.500 directory service have similarity in between. X.500 capabilities and the requirements for the Service Control Function(SCF) to Service Data Function(SDF) in AIN. As an interface, SCF can be mapping as a Directory User Agent(DUA) and SDF can be mapping as a Directory System Agent(DSA). Based on the concepts, X.500 directory can be applied to AIN. In this paper we suggest to apply the X.500 DSP to the SDF/SDF interface to perform a distribution function. Also we show that the SCF-SDF/SDF-SDF relationship can be possible under applying X.500 DAP/DSP within the set of Capability Set 1 (CS1),CS2 and CS3. Finally, based on the above contents, we introduce the designed schematic of AIN SDF Server System for a distributed processing in AIN and design the X.500 schema of Universal Personal Telecommunication(UPT) service for supporting AIN SDF Server.

  • Metadata is a general notion of data about data to improve data sharing and exchanging by definitely describing meaning and representation of data. However, metadata has been created in various ways and It caused another kind of heterogeneity problem named metadata heterogeneity problem. Recently, the research on metadata gateway approach that allows metadata heterogeneity is being more actively progressed. However, the existing commercialized systems that have been implemented with the metadata gateway approach are dependent on a metadata schema. In this paper, we propose a message conversion system which separates the mapping information from the mapping rules between heterogeneous metadata schemas. The proposed system dynamically manages standardized data elements by applying ISO/IEC l1179. Therefore, the proposed system provides the set of standard data elements to create consistently metadata of new databases and provides a fundamental resolution to the metadata heterogeneity problem.

  • This study suggested a method of utilizing METS based on DDI metadata to manage, preserve, and service datasets. DDI is a standard for statistical data processing, and there are currently two versions of DDI Codebook (DDI-C) and DDI Lifecycle (DDI-L). In this study, the main elements of DDI-C were mainly used. First the structures and elements of METS and DDI-C were first analyzed. And the mapping of the major elements of METS and DDI-C. The standard was finally taken as METS, the format to express it. Since METS and DDI-C do not show a perfect 1:1 mapping, the DDI-C element that best matches each element of the standard METS was selected. As a result, a new dataset management transmission standard METS using DDI-C metadata elements was designed and presented.

  • In this paper we propose a framework for an Object Relational IFC Server (OR-IFC Server). Enormous amounts of information are generated in each project. Today, many BIM systems are developed by various CAD software vendors. Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) developed by International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI) is an open standard data model for exchanging data between the various BIM tools. The IFC provides a foundation for exchanging and sharing of information directly between software applications and define a shared building project model. The IFC model server is a database management system that can keep track of transactions, modifications, and deletions. It plays a role as an information hub for storing and sharing information between various parties involved in construction projects. Users can communicate with each other via the internet and utilize functions implemented in the model server such as partial data import/export, file merge, version control, etc. IFC model servers using relational database systems have been developed. However, they suffered from slow performance and long transaction time due to a complex mapping process between the IFC structure and a relational-database structure because the IFC model schema is defined in the EXPRESS language which is object-favored language. In order to simplify the mapping process, we developed a set of rules to map the IFC model to an object-relational database (ORDB). Once the database has been configured, only those pieces of information that are required for a specific information-exchange scenario are extracted using the pre-defined information delivery manual (IDM). Therefore, file sizes will be reduced when exchanging data, meaning that files can now be effectively exchanged and shared. In this study, the framework of the IFC server using ORDB and IDM and the method to develop it will be examined.

  • The Geography Markup Language (GML) is an XML encoding for the transport and storage of geographic information, including both the geometry and properties of geographic features. This paper uses the GML to provide extendibility and interoperability of spatial data in moving objects management system. Since the purpose of the system is to provide locations of the moving objects in the web and mobile environments, we used the GML both for presenting map data and trajectories of the moving objects. The proposed system is composed of Location Data Interface, Moving Objects Engine, and Web/Mobile Presentation Interface. We utilized the concept of Web Map Server, that is web mapping technology of OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium), to integrate map data and the location information of the moving objects. In the process of the integration, we used the standard data model and interfaces while defining new application schema. Since our suggested system uses open spatial data encoding and interfaces, both extendibility and interoperability are guaranteed.

  • This paper presents an automated computer vision-based system to update BIM data by leveraging multi-modal visual data collected from existing buildings under inspection. Currently, visual inspections are conducted for building envelopes or mechanical systems, and auditors analyze energy-related contextual information to examine if their performance is maintained as expected by the design. By translating 3D surface thermal profiles into energy performance metrics such as actual R-values at point-level and by mapping such properties to the associated BIM elements using XML Document Object Model (DOM), the proposed method shortens the energy performance modeling gap between the architectural information in the as-designed BIM and the as-is building condition, which improve the reliability of building energy analysis. Several case studies were conducted to experimentally evaluate their impact on BIM-based energy analysis to calculate energy load. The experimental results on existing buildings show that (1) the point-level thermography-based thermal resistance measurement can be automatically matched with the associated BIM elements; and (2) their corresponding thermal properties are automatically updated in gbXML schema. This paper provides practitioners with insight to uncover the fundamentals of how multi-modal visual data can be used to improve the accuracy of building energy modeling for retrofit analysis. Open research challenges and lessons learned from real-world case studies are discussed in detail.
