  • Purpose: To evaluate and compare published methods of calculating intraocular lens (IOL) power following myopic laser refractive surgery. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of the medical records of 69 patients (69 eyes) who had undergone myopic laser refractive surgery previously and subsequently underwent cataract surgery at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea from January 2010 to June 2016. None of the patients had pre-refractive surgery biometric data available. The Haigis-L, Shammas, Barrett True-K (no history), Wang-Koch-Maloney, Scheimpflug total corneal refractive power (TCRP) 3 and 4 mm (SRK-T and Haigis), Scheimpflug true net power, and Scheimpflug true refractive power (TRP) 3 mm, 4 mm, and 5 mm (SRK-T and Haigis) methods were employed. IOL power required for target refraction was back-calculated using stable post-cataract surgery manifest refraction, and implanted IOL power and formula accuracy were subsequently compared among calculation methods. Results: Haigis-L, Shammas, Barrett True-K (no history), Wang-Koch-Maloney, Scheimpflug TCRP 4 mm (Haigis), Scheimpflug true net power 4 mm (Haigis), and Scheimpflug TRP 4 mm (Haigis) formulae showed high predictability, with mean arithmetic prediction errors and standard deviations of $-0.25{\pm}0.59$, $-0.05{\pm}1.19$, $0.00{\pm}0.88$, $-0.26{\pm}1.17$, $0.00{\pm}1.09$, $-0.71{\pm}1.20$, and $0.03{\pm}1.25$ diopters, respectively. Conclusions: Visual outcomes within 1.0 diopter of target refraction were achieved in 85% of eyes using the calculation methods listed above. Haigis-L, Barrett True-K (no history), and Scheimpflug TCRP 4 mm (Haigis) and TRP 4 mm (Haigis) methods showed comparably low prediction errors, despite the absence of historical patient information.

  • Purpose: To investigate biomechanical properties of the cornea using a dynamic Scheimpflug analyzer according to age. Materials and Methods: In this prospective, cross-sectional, observational study, participants underwent ophthalmic investigations including corneal biomechanical properties, keratometric values, intraocular pressure (IOP), and manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE). We determined the relationship of biomechanical parameters and ocular/systemic variables (participant's age, MRSE, IOP, and mean keratometric values) by piecewise regression analysis, association of biomechanical parameters with variables by Spearman's correlation and stepwise multiple regression analyses, and reference intervals (RI) by the bootstrap method. Results: This study included 217 eyes of 118 participants (20-81 years of age). Piecewise regression analysis between Corvis-central corneal thickness (CCT) and participant's age revealed that the optimal cut-off value of age was 45 years. No clear breakpoints were detected between the corneal biomechanical parameters and MRSE, IOP, and mean keratometric values. Corneal velocity, deformation amplitude, radius, maximal concave power, Corvis-CCT, and Corvis-IOP exhibited correlations with IOP, regardless of age (all ages, 20-44 years, and over 44 years). With smaller deformation amplitude and corneal velocity as well as increased CorvisIOP and Corvis-CCT, IOP became significantly increased. We provided the results of determination of confidence interval from RI data using bootstrap method in three separate age groups (all ages, 20-44 years, and over 44 years). Conclusion: We demonstrated multiple corneal biomechanical parameters according to age, and reported that the corneal biomechanical parameters are influenced by IOP.

  • The vision sensor which is based on the optical triangulation theory with the laser as an auxiliary light source can detect not only the seam position but the shape of seam. In this study, a vision sensor using the scanning laser beam was investigated. To design the vision sensor which considers the reflectivity of the sensing object and satisfies the desired resolution and measuring range, the equation of the focused laser beam which has a Gaussian irradiance profile was firstly formulated, Secondly, the image formaing sequence, and thirdly the relation between the displacement in the measuring surface and the displacement in the camera plane was formulated. Therefore, the focused beam diameter in the measuring range could be determined and the influence of the relative location between the laser and camera plane could be estimated. The measuring range and the resolution of the vision sensor which was based on the Scheimpflug's condition could also be calculated. From the results mentioned above a vision sensor was developed, and an adequate calibration technique was proposed. The image processing algorithm which and recognize the center of joint and its shape informaitons was investigated. Using the developed vision sensor and image processing algorithm, the shape informations was investigated. Using the developed vision sensor and image processing algorithm, the shape informations of the vee-, butt- and lap joint were extracted.

  • We present a novel optical system for an augmented reality head-up display (AR HUD) with two virtual images at different conjugates by employing a confocal off-axis two-mirror and introducing the horopter circle. For a far virtual image with large asymmetrical aberrations, we initially obtain an off-axis two-mirror system corrected for these aberrations and compensated for the down angle by configuring its parameters to satisfy the confocal and Scheimpflug conditions, respectively. In addition, this system is designed to reduce the biocular parallax by matching Petzval surface into the longitudinal horopter circle in a near virtual image. This design approach enables us to easily balance the residual aberrations and biocular parallax when configuring the optical system with two different conjugates, which results in an AR HUD available for near and far virtual images together.

  • The three-dimensional spatial structures of impeller flow created by a six bladed Rushton turbine have identified based on the volumetric velocity information from multi-plane stereoscopic PIV measurements. A total of 10 planes with 2 mm space with a 50 mm by 64 mm size of the field of view were targeted. To reduce the depth of focus, we adopted an angle offset configuration which satisfied the Scheimpflug condition. The distortion compensation procedure was utilized during the in situ calibration. Phase-locked instantaneous data were ensemble averaged and interpolated in order to obtain mean 3-D, volumetric velocity fields on a 60 degree sector of a cylindrical ring volume enclosing the turbine blade. Using the equi-vorticity surface rendering, the spatial structure of the trailing vortices was clearly demonstrated. Detail flow characteristics of the radial jet reported in previous studies of mixer flows were easily identified.

  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. • Fog screens offer a great advantage to be used as scattering screens in three-dimensional displays. In the absence of a fixed rigid form, fog screens work as screens without any physical obstruction. The density of water droplets can be regulated to adjust the screen's transparency and scattering level. This study proposes a method for crosstalk reduction between adjacent viewing windows by decreasing the divergence of view of the projector, with concentration lenses. By applying the Scheimpflug principle, we also reduce the keystone effect, which occurs when the fog screen is slanted with respect to the optical axis. In this study, we have realized a tabletop multiview fog display without any structures on the table and established that the proposed method is feasible for decreasing crosstalk effectively.
