We have investigated the contribution of the scattered x rays to the signal imaging in the radiographs acquired with anti-scatter grids of several grid ratios by separating the line spread functions (LSFs) derived from the signal edge image into the primary and the scatter components. By using a 1.0-mm lead plate in the scattering material, the blurred signal edge images were acquired by use of an imaging plate at a tube voltage of 80 kV with the anti-scatter grids of grid ratios for 5:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1 and 12:1. The edge profiles of the signal images were scanned and those in relative exposure were differentiated to obtain the LSFs. To investigate the contribution of the scattered x rays to the signal imaging, we proposed a method for separating the LSFs derived from the signal images into the primary and the scatter components, where the scatter component was approximated with exponential function. Our basic approach is to separate the area of the LSFs by ratios of the scattered x-ray exposure to the primary x-ray exposure, which were obtained for the grid ratios by use of a lead disk method. The LSFs and the two components were Fourier transformed to obtain the modulation transfer functions (MTFs) and their two components. As the result, we found that, by using the anti-scatter grids, the scattered x rays were reduced, but the shape of the LSFs of the scatter component hardly changed. The contributions of the scatter component to the MTFs were not negligible (more than 10 %) for spatial frequencies lower than about 1.0 mm$\^$-l/ and that was greater as the grid ratio decreasing. On the other hand, for higher frequencies, the primary component was dominant compared with the scatter component.
Scattered photons cause blurring and distortions in flash radiography, reducing the accuracy of image reconstruction significantly. The effect of the scattered photons is taken into account and an iterative deduction of the scattered photons is proposed to amend the scattering effect for image restoration. In order to deduct the scattering contribution, the flux of scattered photons is estimated as the sum of two components. The single scattered component is calculated accurately together with the uncollided flux along the characteristic ray, while the multiple scattered component is evaluated using correction coefficients pre-obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. The arbitrary geometry pretreatment and ray tracing are carried out based on the customization of AutoCAD. With the above model, an Iterative Procedure for image restORation code, IPOR, is developed. Numerical results demonstrate that the IPOR code is much more accurate than the direct reconstruction solution without scattering correction and it has a very high computational efficiency.
Raman-scattered He II features are known to be present in several young planetary nebulae (PNe) including NGC 7027, NGC 6302, IC 5117 and NGC 6790. These features provide a new spectroscopic window to probe both thick neutral regions and far UV regions near Lyman series. We carry out photoionization model calculations using 'CLOUDY' to explore He II emission strengths dependent on the physical conditions of the central star. The emission nebula is treated as a simple spherical shell with uniform density. It is found that detectable Raman-scattered He II are obtained for T∗ ~ 105 K in the presence of a thick neutral component. We present mock spectra exhibiting Raman He II features based on the photoionization calculations and compare them with observed data. We discuss effective strategies for searching young PNe with Raman-scattered He II emissivities.

From the Beckmann's reflection model of wave incident, reflected light from a surface is known to have not only specular but also diffuse components. The specular component dominant a surface for a mirror-like surface is distributed on the almost the same area as the spot on the surface, but the diffuse component region dominant f3r a rough surface spreads scattered on the larger areas than the spot. Therefore, statistic parameters from the scattered light distribution are more meaningful in the diffuse region, while the magnitude of rather meaning in the specular region. In usual, there need two sensors to acquire two kinds of information: Photo-detector for light intensity magnitude and image sensor for light intensity distribution. But dual sensor scheme requires a beam splitter usually to feed light to each sensor, and moreover there is not a combination rule to relieve the different sensor characteristics. In this study a new method is proposed for acquisition of the dual information using only an image sensor. Specular region is established on an image area being distinguished from a diffuse component, and laser power is adjusted so that no pixel of the image sensor in the specular region is saturated. Simulation based on the light reflection theory and the experimental results are quite well matched, and thus the proposed method was proved to be very useful for mirror-like surface measurement.

This study was conducted to assess the effect of mixed fuel composition and mass fraction on spray inner structure in evaporating transient spray under the various ambient conditions. Spray structure and spatial distribution of liquid phase concentration are investigated using a thin laser sheet illumination technique on the multi-component mixed fuels. A pulsed Ar+ laser was used as a light source. The experiments were conducted in a constant volume vessel with optical access. Fuel was injected into the vessel with electronically controlled common rail injector. Used fuel contain $i-octane(C_8H_{18}),\;n-dodecane(C_{12}H_{26})$ and $n-hexadecane(C_{16}H_{34})$ that are selected as low-, middle- and high-boiling point fuel, respectively. Experimental conditions are 25Mpa, 42MPa, 72MPa and 112MPa in injection pressure, $5kg/m^3,\;15kg/m^3\;and\;20kg/m^3$ in ambient gas density, 400K, 500K, 600K and 700K in ambient gas temperature, 300K and 368K in fuel temperature, and different fuel mass fraction. Experimental results indicate that the more high-boiling point component, the longer the liquid phase it were closely related to fuel physical properties, but injection pressure had no effect on. And there was a high correlation between the liquid phase length and boiling temperature at 75% distillation point.
Symbiotic stars are known as binary systems of a giant with heavy mass loss and a white dwarf accompanied by an emission nebula. They often show bipolar nebulae, and are believed to form an accretion disk around the white dwarf component by attracting the slow but heavy stellar wind around the giant companion. However, the existence and physical properties of the accretion disk in these systems still remain controversial. Unique to the spectra of symbiotic stars is the existence of the symbiotic bands around $6830{\AA}$ and $7088{\AA}$, which have been identified by Schmid (1989) as the Raman scattered features of the O VI $1032{\AA}$ and $1038{\AA}$ doublet by atomic hydrogen. Due to the incoherency of the Raman scattering, these features have very broad profiles and they are also strongly polarized. In the accretion disk emission model, it is expected that the Raman features are polarized perpendicular to the binary axis and show multiple peak structures in the profile, because the neutral scatterers located near the giant component views the accretion disk in the edge-on direction. Assuming the presence of scattering regions outflowing in the polar directions, we may explain the additional red wing or red peak structure, which is polarized parallel to the binary axis. We argue that in the accretion disk emission model it is predicted that the profile of the Raman feature around $6830{\AA}$ is different from the profile of the $7088{\AA}$ because the O VI line optical depth varies locally around the white dwarf component. We conclude that the Raman scattered features are an important tool to investigate the physical conditions and geometrical configuration of the accretion disk in a symbiotic star.
The IR signal entering into a sensor is composed of the following components: the self-emitted component directly from the object surface, the reflected components of the solar and sky irradiance at the object surface, and the scattered component by the atmosphere without reference to any object surfaces. The self-emitted and reflected components from the object can be lowered by the atmospheric layer between the object and the IR sensor. The principle factors influencing the atmospheric transmittance are the air temperature, the relative humidity and the observation distance. Previous studies on IR signal transmission through the atmosphere are focused on uniform atmospheric conditions and the non-uniform nature of the atmosphere was not properly treated in modeling. In this study, we use the local atmospheric transmittance to simulate the non-uniform atmosphere in analyzing the IR signal from the object surface. The results show that the nonuniform analysis of the atmosphere becomes more important as the wavelength of IR signal increases.
A practical calculation algorithm which calculates the relative output factor(ROF) for irregular shaped electron field has been developed and evaluated the accuracy of the algorithm. The algorithm adapted two-source model, which assumes that the electron dose can be express as sum of the primary source component and the scattered component from the shielding block. Original two-source model has been modified in order to make the algorithm simpler and to reduce the number of parameters needed in the calculation, while the calculation error remains within clinical tolerance range. The primary source is assumed to have Gaussian distribution, while the scattered component follows the inverse square law. Depth and angular dependency of the primary and the scattered are ignored ROF can be calculated with three parameters such as, the effective source distance, the variance of primary source, and the scattering power of the block. The coefficients are obtained from the square shaped-block measurements and the algorithm is confirmed from the rectangular or irregular shaped-fields used in the clinic. The results showed less than 1.0 % difference between the calculation and measurements for most cases. None of cases which have bigger than 2.1 % have been found. By improving the algorithm for the aperture region which shows the largest error, the algorithm could be practically used in the clinic, since one can acquire the 1011 parameter's with minimum measurements(5∼6 measurements per cones) and generates accurate results within the clinically acceptable range.
In this paper, static and fatigue load tests for the specimens, components and carbody were carried out to investigate the strength of welded joints in aluminum rolling stock. Tensile load test results showed that the static strength of welded joint for heat-treated alloys is reduced significantly and fatigue strengths are scattered by the welding imperfections. Component and whole carbody fatigue test results showed agreements with the design fatigue strength standards for specimens of same joint detail. Test results revealed that full penetration welding and strict management of welding procedure are crucial for securing strength of welded joint in aluminum carbody.

We present the calculation of X -ray spectra produced through Compton scattering of soft X-rays by hot electrons in the spherical shell geometry, using fully relativistic Monte Carlo simulation. With this model, we show that the power-law component, which has been observed in the low luminosity state of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), is explained physically. From a spectral. analysis, we find that spectral hardness is mainly due to the relative contribution of scattered component. In addition, we see that Wi en spectral features appear when the plasma is optically thick, especially in the high energy range, $E{\gtrsim}100keV$. We suggest that after a number of scattering the escape probability approaches an asymptotic form depending on the geometry of the scattering medium rather than on the initial photon spectrum.
