Test-retest reliability of the questionnaire in the Sasang constitutional analysis tool (SCAT)

  • Background: The Sasang constitutional analysis tool (SCAT) is an integrated Sasang constitutional analysis system developed by the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of a questionnaire for measuring personality and pathophysiological symptoms that is one of the components of the SCAT. Methods: In this study, data were collected from university students in their twenties. Tests were administered twice, with an interval of 4 weeks between tests. Test-retest data from 176 students were collected and used for analysis. Internal consistency reliability was analyzed by using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and test-retest reliability was analyzed by using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Results: Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.788 for personality, 0.511 for eating habits, 0.718 for digestion, 0.667 for heat- or cold-wise penchant, and 0.612 for water ingestion. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients, which were used to assess correlations between test and retest results, ranged from 0.444 to 0.828. Conclusion: The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the SCAT questionnaire were found to be satisfactory.

THE USE OF QUICKS CAT WIND TO ESTIMATE THE VERTICAL VELOCITY IN TYPHOON AND SNOWSTORM

  • This study examines moisture supplement from the warm ocean in snowfalls of two cases and heavy rainfall of Typhoon case. The QuickSCAT wind is used to evaluate the convergence of moisture fluxes in the storms from the sea in estimation of the amount of heavy snowstorm and rainfall. The results show that enough water vapor transport from ocean to atmosphere induced the severe storms, because strong QuickSCAT -derived vertical velocity nearly concurred with heavy snowfall and rainfall. In the present study, we attempted to show that QuickSCAT wind can be used to forecast the severe weather events, such as heavy snowfall and rainfalls.

  • 1. Objectives : In Sasang constitutional medicine, it has been known that diagnosing Sasang constitution correctly is mostly important. We had developed an Integrated Sasang Constitutional Analysis Tool (SCAT) ${\beta}$-version using face, voice, body shape and questionnaire before. The purpose of this study is to suggest whether SCAT ${\beta}$-version is reliable or not. 2. Methods : We collected 371 subjects from 6 oriental medical clinics. We analyzed the Sasang constitutional diagnostic results using Kappa and coincidence rates between experts in Sasang constitution and SCAT ${\beta}$-version which was developed on the basis of face, body shape, voice and characteristics and symptom questionnaire data. 3. Results : The agreement rates between SCAT ${\beta}$-version and experts was 69.3% in total, and 73.2%, in Taeeumin, 70.8% in Soeumin, and 56.9% in Soyangin in detailed. The Kappa was 0.510 (p value<.000). There was an increasing trend of agreement rates and kappa value corresponded to increasing constitutional probability. When The constitutional probabilities were changed from below 40%, to over 40%, 50%, 60%, the agreement rates corresponded from 50.8% to 79.5%, 91.4%, 95.7% respectively. 4. Conclusions : A SCAT combined with a constitutional probability seemed to help experts to diagnose a patient's Sasang constitution correctly.

  • Objectives Recently, Sasang Constitutional Analysis Tool (SCAT) was developed using face, body shape, questionnaire, and voice information. The purpose of this paper is to analysis the characteristics of SCAT in detail for the subjects whose Sasang Constitutional (SC) type was confirmed clearly. Methods 1) The SC types of 108 patients were diagnosed by an expert of Sasang constitutional medicine through the observation of improvements after taking more than 20 packs of herbal medicine prescribed 2) The diagnostic results of SCAT were acquired for the patients. 3) Comparison between diagnostic results of the SCAT and expert was performed according to SC probability difference, the number of packs of herbal medicine prescribed, the number of hospital visits, and age. Results 1) The concordance rate was 65.9% and 59.4% in the male and female groups, respectively. 2) Overall, the concordance rate increased as the SC probability difference increased. In case of more than 5% SC probability difference, it increased up to 71.0% and 66.7% in the male and female groups, respectively. 3) The concordance rate did not show any trend as the number of packs of herbal medicine prescribed and the number of hospital visits increased. 4) The higher concordance rate was observed in Taeeumin, Soyangin, and 20s ~ 40s groups of male patients, and in Soyangin, 20s, and 40s groups of female patients. Conclusions The strong and weak points of SCAT were observed and they will contribute to the improvement of SCAT performance.

Assessment of Offshore Wind Resources Within Japan's EEZ Using QuikSCAT Data

  • In this paper, offshore wind resources within the Japan's EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) are assessed using wind speed data from the microwave scatterometer SeaWinds onboard QuikSCAT. At first, from the 10m-height wind speed from QuikSCAT, 60 m-height wind speed is estimated by using an empirical equation for height correction. Based on the 60 m-height wind speeds, annual energy Production is calculated under an assumption of installing 2 MW wind turbines every $0.64km^2$. The annual energy production is then accumulated for the entire Japan's territorial waters and EEZ ($4.47{\times}10^6km^2$). As a result, it is shown that the total energy Production is estimated to be $4.86{\times}10^4$ TWh/yr. This offshore wind energy Potential within the EEZ is approximately 50 times higher than the actual annual electricity production in Japan.

Characteristics of Typhoon Jelawat Observed by OSMI, TRMM/PR and QuikSCAT

  • The typhoon Jelawat, which was formed over the tropical Pacific ocean on August 1, 2000 and made a landfall over China on August 10, 2000, was observed by Korea Multi-purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT-1) Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI), Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)/Precipitation Radar(PR) and Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT). In spite of discontinuous observation, important mesoscale features of typhoon depending on life cycle were detected prominently. It is possible to distinguish on the OSMI photograph between the eye-wall convection and the stratiform and other convective clouds near the center of typhoon Jelawat. The TRMM/PR observations show quite clearly the eye-wall convection, stratiform regions, and convective bands. Vertical cross section of rainfall in the genesis stage of typhoon Jelawat exhibits circular ring of intense convection surrounding the eye. The mature stage of typhoon Jelawat consists of a strong rotational circulation with clouds which are well organized about a center of low pressure. The OSMI, TRMM/PR and QuikSCAT measurements presented here agree qualitatively with each other and provide a wealth of information on the structure of typhoon Jelawat.

Genetic diversity of spotted scat (Scatophagus argus) in Vietnam based on COI genes

  • A spotted scat, Scatophagus argus, has a high nutritional value and is among Asia's most widely consumed fish species. Thua Thien Hue's consumption market considers this species to be of high economic value and requires protection and conservation of the population. However, the studies on the identification and genetic diversity of S. argus distributed in Vietnam are still lacking. Therefore, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene was utilized to distinguish different populations and investigate the genetic diversity of two populations of S. argus from Tam Giang lagoon, Thua Thien Hue province (n = 31) and Ca Mau province (n = 14). The sequencing results indicated 13 distinct haplotypes among 45 sequences. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms were observed to distinguish Hue spotted scat population. The S. argus population in Ca Mau province was higher haplotype diversity (Hd) and nucleotide diversity (π) than those of Thua Thien Hue province, which demonstrates that there are minor differences between haplotypes. There were genetic distances ranging from 0%-4% within the populations and 6.67% between the two populations. In addition to the sequencing, the comparison of morphology, biology, culture, and the growth rate was sufficient to distinguish the spotted scat S. argus in Thua Thien Hue from Ca Mau.

기상청 현업 모델 RDAPS와 QuikSCAT 해상풍 자료의 비교 (Comparison of KMA Operational Model RDAPS with QuikSCAT Sea Surface Wind Data)

  • 기상청 현업 모델 RDAPS 모델 자료와 QuikSCAT 관측결과 중 2005, 2006년 해상풍 자료를 비교하였다. 해상풍의 하계와 동계의 평균 공간 분포의 분석결과 한반도 주변의 계절적인 해상풍의 뚜렷한 특성을 잘 나타낸다. 모델과 관측의 해상풍 통계 분석 비교에서도 계절적인 차이를 잘 나타낸다. 한반도 주변의 하계 BIAS 값은 -0.5m/s이하의 분포를 보이고, 동계에는 -1 m/s이하의 분포를 보인다. 상관계수의 경우 하계에는 0.7, 동계에는 0.8 이상으로 분포한다. 공간적으로 평균된 상관계수의 경우 2005년, 2006년 모두 하계보다 동계에 더욱 상관관계가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이것은 하계의 약한 풍속보다 동계의 강한 해상풍을 RDAPS에서 더 잘 재현하고 있는 것으로 판단된다.

  • 태풍의 경우, 주요 자연재해 중의 하나로 태풍의 상황을 정확하게 파악하는 것은 기상예측의 정도를 높이고, 재해를 방지하는데 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 일반적으로 태풍의 동향을 감시하는데 있어, 히마와리 등의 기상위성이 주로 활용되고 있다. 근년 인공위성의 원격탐사를 이용하여 광범위의 해양에 대한 해상풍과 파랑의 관측이 가능하게 되었다. 본 연구에서는, QuickSCAT위성에 의한 해상풍 관측의 현상을 조사하고, 위성으로부터 얻어진 2000년의 데이터를 사용해서 한반도 주변해역에 대한 해상풍의 월변동 특성을 조사하고, 2000년 7월에 한반도에 영향을 준 태풍 카이탁내의 해상풍을 검토하였다. 추가로 RSMC 동경 태풍 센터에서 발행하는 태풍자료를 이용하여, 태풍 비교를 수행하였다. 풍속은 제주도 주변해역, 특히 제주도 동쪽해역에서의 풍속이 연중 강하며, 9월에서 2월 기간에는 북풍 계열의 바람이 우세하고, 6월-8월에는 남풍계열의 바람이 지배적이다. 봄의 기간인 3월-5월에는 북풍에서 남풍으로 바뀌는 과정으로 다양한 방향의 바람이 혼재한다. 태풍 카이탁의 해상풍 조사를 통하여, 위험반원의 형상이 보다 복잡하며 그 범위가 크다는 점이 확인되었다.
