  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine, when measuring prostate volume by TRUS, whether height is more accurately determined by transaxial or midsagittal scanning. Materials and Methods: Sixteen patients who between March 1995 and March 1998 underwent both preoperative TRUS and radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer were included in this study. Using prolate ellipse volume calculation (height × length × width × 𝜋/6), TRUS prostate volume was determined, and was compared with the measured volume of the specimen. Results: Prostate volume measured by TRUS, regardless of whether height was determined transaxially or midsagittally, correlated closely with real specimen volume. When height was measured in one of these planes, a paired t test revealed no significant difference between TRUS prostate volume and real specimen volume (p = .411 and p = .740, respectively), nor were there significant differences between the findings of transaxial and midsagittal scanning (p = .570). A paired sample test, however, indicated that TRUS prostate volumes determined transaxially showed a higher correlation coefficient (0.833) and a lower standard deviation (9.04) than those determined midsagittally (0.714 and 11.48, respectively). Conclusion: Prostate volume measured by TRUS closely correlates with real prostate volume. Furthermore, we suggest that when measuring prostate volume in this way, height is more accurately determined by transaxial than by midsagittal scanning.

  • Scanning electron microscopic observation of the oviductal epithelium was carried out on the virgin white Wistar rat during normal sexual cycle, and obtained the results as follows; Rat oviductal epithelium during the normal sexual cycle generally consisted of two types of cells: ciliated and non-ciliated cell. The ciliated cells had cilia which was measured $0.2{\mu}$ in width and $3-5{\mu}$ in length. According to the length of microvilli and the distribution in each segment, the non-ciliated cell was further subdivided into four types of cells; NC-I, NC-II, NC-III, and NC-IV. The morphologic characteristics of each type of cells were also ascertained by SEM observations.

  • Thin films play an important role in many technological applications including microelectronic devices, magnetic storage media, MEMS and surface coatings. It is well known that a thin film's material properties can be very different front the corresponding bulk properties and thus there has been a strong need for the development of a miniature tester to measure the mechanical properties of a thin film. Two testers are designed and set up in small size of 62 mm width, 20 mm depth and 90-120 mm height to fit in a chamber of scanning electron microscope (SEM). One tester has a homemade 0.2 N load cell and a low-priced electromagnetic actuator. The other has a commercial 5 N load cell, a $52{\mu}m$ piezoelectric actuator and some novel grips. Two types of 3.5 microns thick polysilicon specimen are tested to prove the testers' applicability. The strain is measured by the two ways. Firstly, it is measured by an ISDG system in the atmosphere far the reference. Secondly, the same test is repeated in a SEM chamber to monitor the strain as an in-situ experiment. The strain is evaluated by observing the gap change between two markers.

  • KOMPSAT -2 equipped with an optical telescope(MSC) will be launched in this year. It can take images of the earth with push-broom scanning at altitude 685Km. Its resolution is 1m in panchromatic channel with a swath width of 15 km After the MSC is tested and the performance is measured at instrument level, it is installed on satellite. The image passes through the electro-optical system, compression and storage unit and fmally downlink sub-systems. This integration procedure necessitates the functional test of all subsystems participating in the image chain. The objective of functional test at satellite level(Quick Look test) is to check the functionality of image chain by real target image. Collimated moving image is input to the EOS in order to simulate the operational environments as if KOMPSAT -2 is being operated in orbit. The image chain from EOS to data downlink subsystem will be verified through Quick Look test. This paper explains the Quick Look test of KOMPSAT -2 and compares the taken images with collimated input ones.

  • Standard positive photoresist techniques were adapted to generate nano-scale patterns of gold substrate using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and femtosecond laser. SAMs formed by the adsorption of alkanethiols onto gold substrate are employed as very thin photoresists, Alkanethiolates formed by the adsorption of alkanethiols are oxidized on exposure to UV light in the presence of air to alkylsulfonates. Specifically, it is known that deep UV light of wavelength less than 200nm is necessary for oxidation to occur. In this study, ultrafast laser of wavelength 800nm and pulse width 200fs is applied for photolithography. Results show that ultrafast laser of visible range wavelength can replace deep UV laser source for photo patterning using thin organic films. Femtosecond laser coupled near-field scanning optical microscopy facilitates not only the patterning of surface chemical structure, but also the creation of three-dimensional nano-scale structures by combination with suitable etching methods.

  • A helical fabricating method using $CO_2$ laser was utilized for producing cone-shaped structure on a silica substrate. Output power and the number of scanning radiation were modified in order to control the structure. The experiment shows that the depth and width of cone-shape were increased with higher output power of the laser and the number of scanning. We demonstrate fabrication of multidirectional side-firing optical fiber with diameter of 440 um using the $CO_2$ laser fabrication technique.

  • Hybrid type microscope with a Scanning Confocal Microscope (SCM) and a shear-force Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is suggested and preliminarily studied. A image of $120{\times}120{\mu}m^2$ is obtained within 1 second by SCM because scan speed of a X-axis and Y-axis are 1kHz and 1Hz, respectively. Shear-force AFM is able to correctly measure the hight and width of sample with a resolution 8nm. However, the scan speed is slow and it is difficult to distinguish a surface composed of different kinds of materials. We have carried out the measurement of total image of a sample by SCM and an exact analysis of each image by shear-force AFM.

  • The paper proposes the scheme of skew detection for Thai printed document images by using linear regression algorithm. It intends to use with the Thai character recognition systems to reduce the skew detection time. This scheme begins by finding the center of gravity of a document image. This point is used as the starting point for gathering data in the scheme. The data is obtained by scanning incrementally one pixel in vertically with the width of 20-pixels. After the scanning process, if data Is different from it's neighbor more than ${\pm}$ 15 pixels, it will be considered as noise or data in other lines and will be deleted. The last step is the operation by using linear regression algorithm on these selected data and the skew angle will be obtained. The proposed method has been tested with 45 document images with different fonts, sizes and skew angles. The experiment results show that the proposed method can detect the skew angle with the error of less then one degree. The average processing time is about 19 times faster than that of the Hough Transform method.
