A Pilot Study of the Scanning Beam Quality Assurance Using Machine Log Files in Proton Beam Therapy

  • The machine log files recorded by a scanning control unit in proton beam therapy system have been studied to be used as a quality assurance method of scanning beam deliveries. The accuracy of the data in the log files have been evaluated with a standard calibration beam scan pattern. The proton beam scan pattern has been delivered on a gafchromic film located at the isocenter plane of the proton beam treatment nozzle and found to agree within ${\pm}1.0mm$. The machine data accumulated for the scanning beam proton therapy of five different cases have been analyzed using a statistical method to estimate any systematic error in the data. The high-precision scanning beam log files in line scanning proton therapy system have been validated to be used for off-line scanning beam monitoring and thus as a patient-specific quality assurance method. The use of the machine log files for patient-specific quality assurance would simplify the quality assurance procedure with accurate scanning beam data.

  • This paper describes the development of on the machine measuring(OMM) system which can directlry measure the three dimensional machined dimensilnal accuracy using scanning probe in milling machine. Two algolithms, continuous path(CP) measurement using UC program and CAD data assisted point to point(PTP) measurement, were developed regarding specification of scanning probe. The OMM system was contructed to verify the developed system suing the proposed algorithm, and actually measured three kinds of machined TV shadow mask molds. The developed system was evaluated it's repeatability and compared with the current measurement system of CMM(Coording Measuring Machine) in terms of relative accuracy and time reduction and productivity increase.

  • In this paper, an OMM (On-the-Machine Measuring) system has been developed, which can perform measuring and inspection of sculptured surfaces of die and mold, by use of a scanning-type touch probe mounted into the spindle of a NC machine. The calibration procedures of a scanning prove (SP2-1, Renishaw) and an algorithm for measuring surface points by a ball-nosed stylus have been studied. The system has been developed based on commercial CAM software (Z-Master 2000), and tested through measuring a plastic injection molding-die. Also some experimental results of the calibration and measuring for given surface positions are analyzed to verify its accuracy and reliability.

  • This paper describes the development of on-the-machine measuring(OMM) system which can directly measure the two and three dimensional machined accuracy using a scanning probe in milling machine. Two algorithms, NC program based continuous path(CP) measurement and CAD data assisted point to point(PTP) measurement, are developed for three dimensional measurements, with consideration of the characteristics of the scanning probe. The algorithms are used to develop an auto measuring system. The delveloped system is compared with the CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) in terms of accuracy and repeatability. The OMM system is expected to realize measurement time reduction and hence result in high productivity.

  • The purpose of this study is the machining of texture shapes by the contour fitting data. The hardware of the system comprises PC and scanning system, CO2 laser machine. There are four steps, (1) text image loading using scanning shapes or 2D image files, (2) generation of contour fitting data by the line and arc, cubic Bezier curve, (3) generation of NC code from the contouring fitting data, (4) machining by the DNC system. It is developed a software package, with which can conduct a micro CAM system of CNC laser machine in the PC without economical burden.

  • The errors can cause the serious loss of the performance of a precision machine system. In this paper, we proposed the method of allocating the alignment tolerances of the parts and applied this method to get the optimal tolerances of a Confocal Scanning Microscope. In general, tight tolerances are required to maintain the performance of a system, but a high cost of manufacturing and assembling is required to preserve the tight tolerances. The purpose of allocating the optimal tolerances is minimizing the cost while keeping the high performance of the system. In the optimal problem, we maximized the tolerances while maintaining the performance requirements. The Monte Carlo Method, a statistical simulation method, is used in tolerance analysis. Alignment tolerances of optical components of the confocal scanning microscope are optimized to minimize the cost and to maintain the observation performance of the microscope. We can also apply this method to the other precision machine system.

  • This paper describes an analysis of measuring error of on the machine measuring(OMM) system which directly measures machined surface dimensions using scanning probe on a CNC milling machine. 21 inch TV shadow mask mould clamped to a pallet was measured using PTP(point to point) measuring algorithm in OMM system and the results were compared with those using coordinate measuring machine(CMM). The OMM error was evaluated by probe error, stylus contact error, center shift error, repeatability, work-piece clamping error and etc. The results show that elastic deformation of the pallet is most affecting factor on the measuring error, thus pallet design and clamping method need very careful cosiderations.

The OMM system was evaluated probe error, stylus contact error, center shift error, repeatability and so on. Consequencely, the conclusion derived that elastic displacement of pallet had effect on measuring error mainly, and pallet design and setup method would be important.

  • Selective Laser Sintering(SLS) method is one of Rapid Prototyping(RP) technologies. It is used to fabricate desirable part to sinter powder and stack the fabricated layer. To develop this SLS machine, it needs effective scanning path and the development of scanning device. This paper shows how to make fast scanning path with respect to scan spacing, laser beam size and scanning direction from 2-dimensional sliced file generated in commercial CAD/CAM software. Also, we develop the scanning device and its control algorithm to precisely follow the generated scanning path. Scanning path affects precision and total machining time of the final fabricated part. Sintering occurs using infrared laser which has high thermal energy. As a result, shrinkage and curling of the fabricated part occurs according to thermal distribution. Therefore, fast scanning path generation is needed to eliminate the factors of quality deterioration. It highly affects machining efficiency and prevents shrinkage and curling by relatively lessening the thermal distribution of the surface of sintering layer. To generate this fast scanning path, adaptive path generation is needed with respect to the shape of each layer, and not simply x, y scanning, but the scanning of arbitrary direction must be enabled. This paper addresses path generation method to focus on fast scanning, and development of scanning system and control algorithm to precisely follow generated path.

  • This paper reports on the development of a scanning probe microscopy(SPM) tip with caborn nanotubes. We used an electric field which causes dielectrophoresis(DEP), to align and deposit CNTs on a metal-coated SPM tip. Using the CNT attached SPM tip, we have obtained an enhanced resolution and wear property compared to that from the bare silicon tip through the scanning of the surface of the bio materials. The carbon nanotube tip align toward the source of the ion beam allowing their orientation to be changed at precise angles. By this technique, metal coated carbon nanotube tips that are several micrometer in length are prepared for scanning probe microscopy.
