  • To secure the stability of geotechnical infrastructures and minimize failures during the construction process, a number of support systems have been introduced in the last several decades. In particular, stabilization methods using steel bars have been widely used in the field of geotechnical engineering. Rock bolt system is representative support system using steel bars. Pre-stressing has been applied to enhance reinforcement performance but can be released because of the failure of head or anchor sections. To overcome this deficiency, this paper proposes an innovative support system that can actively reinforce the weak ground along the whole structural element by introducing an active tension bolt containing a spring unit to the middle of the steel bar to increase its reinforcement capacity. In addition, the paper presents the support mechanism of the active tension bolt based on a theoretical study and employs an experimental study to validate the performance of the proposed active tension bolt based on a down-scaled model. To examine the feasibility of the active tension unit in a pillar, the paper considers a pullout test and a small-scale experimental model. The experimental results suggest the active tension bolt to be an effective support system for pillar reinforcement.

  • TM projection is widely used for surveying and mapping. However, the complicated computations and process are required and, moreover. the different results of computation may occur according to different formulae and coefficients. In this study, the transformation formulae are classified into 4 categories and the computations are executed according to the categories. The computations are also made to different value of the circular constant, $\pi$. The result of test shows that the enough number of items in formular have to be used for precise computation and the circular constant has to calculate down the 13 places of decimals in order to obtain the precision of 1mm on the ground scale.

  • Acoustic tuning frequency of quarter-wave resonators is investigated numerically to suppress combustion instability in a liquid rocket engine. A quarter-wave resonator is adopted, which was designed from the cold acoustic test for optimal damping condition. First, in a model combustion chamber scaled down from a full-scale chamber, reactive flow filed is analyzed numerically and acoustic-pressure responses are examined. Next, thermodynamic properties in the resonators are predicted. Based on the data, frequency tuning method is studied. The optimum tuning length of each resonator is proposed and thereby, sufficient damping is produced.

  • Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle - installed downstream of the high pressure turbine extraction steam line - inside number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. At that point, the extracted steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows in reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of the number 5 high pressure feedwater heater may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. This paper describes the comparisons between the numerical analysis results using the FLUENT code and the down scale experimental data in an effort to determine root causes of the shell wall thinning of the high pressure feedwater heaters. The numerical analysis and experimental data were also confirmed by actual wall thickness measured by an ultrasonic test.

  • The Deep Lens Survey (DLS), a precursor to the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), is a 20 deg2 survey carried out with NOAO's Blanco and Mayalltelescopes. DLS is unique in its depth reaching down to ~27th mags in BVRz bands. This enables a broad redshift baseline and is optimal for investigating cosmological evolution of the large scale structure. Galaxy-galaxylensing is a powerful tool to estimate averaged matter distribution around lensgalaxies by measuring shape distortions of background galaxies. The signal from galaxy-galaxy lensing is sensitive not only to galaxy halo properties, but also to cosmological environment at large scales. In this study, we measure galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering, which together put strong constraints on the cosmological parameters. We obtain significant galaxy-galaxy lensing signals out to ~20 Mpc while tightly controlling systematics. The B-mode signals are consistent with zero. Our lens-source flip test indicates that minimal systematic errors are present in DLS photometric redshifts. Shear calibration is performed using high-fidelity galaxy image simulations. We demonstrate that the overall shape of the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal is well described by the halo model comprised of central and non-central halo contributions. Finally, we present our preliminary constraints on the matter density and the normalization parameters.

  • Hybrid mass damper systems have recently been introduced as a dynamic vibration absorber to exploit the benefits of both the conventional tuned mass damper system and the active control system. A hybrid system is programmed to function as either a conventional TMD or as an active system according to the wind conditions and the resultant building and damper mass vibration characteristics. This paper deals with the design of the robust controller for the control of the flexible box structure. The control algorithm was devised based on $H_2$(LQG) robust control logic with acceleration feedback and to improve the capability of the controller Kalman Filter was accepted for the system. To test the ability of the robust controller using the linear motor damper system, performance tests and simulations were carried out on the full-scale steel frame structure. Through the performance tests, it was confirmed that acceleration levels are reduced down.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation training using biofeedback on perceived stress, stress response, immune response and climacteric symptoms, Method: This was a crossover, pre-post test design, The study subjects are 36 middle-aged women who were selected at 2 public health centers, The independent variable was Biofeedback training for 4 weeks, twice a week and home training for 4 weeks, Dependent variables were perceived stress, stress response, immune response, and climacteric symptoms measured with Hildtch's scale (1996), Result: Progressive muscle relaxation training using biofeedback was not effective in reducing perceived stress, but it was shown to be effective in reducing physiological stress responses such as pulse rate and EMG, Though blood pressure and skin conductance were repeatedly down, and skin temperature slowly increased, there were no statistically significant differences. Progressive muscle relaxation training using biofeedback was not effective in reducing serum cortisol, enhancing immune responses, or decreasing climacteric symptoms. Conclusion: The findings point to a pressing need for further, well-controlled and designed research with consideration in selection of subjects and instruments, frequency of measurements, the sampling method, and intervention modalities.

  • Recently, the domestic remodeling market is increased in scale. This study is to develop the sanitary piping system which improves quality of life and facility performance when the aged public housing is remodeled. Above all, we found out three standard floor plans in bathrooms of the public housing. And then, the plan and section types of the sanitary piping system were developed for the on-floor piping, a construction cost of each section types was estimated to review the economical fact. Also, the field mock-up test was performed in the type of the pipe shaft with on-floor pit. In result, the developed sanitary piping system was available for the remodeling public housing without a great facility cost. Additionally, the sanitary pipe was replaced easily through the shaft and on-floor fit. And a noise was reduced to a lower unit when the water flowed down.

  • In this study, examined influence of consolidation effect that had affected by location of pump inlet that was set collection well for drainage of pore water discharged by embankment on soft ground through the field test. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1 Initial consolidation curve value were larger than theoritic value, the cause of these phenomena were thought influence of secondary consolidation and three dimensional strain of soft clay. 2. The settlement value of Hosino method was larger than that of Hyperbolic method, but settlement value of Hyperbolic method was accurate more than that of Hosino method in the prediction of settlement. 3. When pump inlet in collection well came down from GL+O.3m to GL-1.5m, settlement value increased about 10cm and when the ground water level was made insitu after pumping had completed , settlement was expanded about 7~8cm. So it is found that location change of pump inlet bad an influence on settlement remarkably. 4. If location of pump inlet in collection well for large scale estate or wide road site is lowered than original ground level, the settlement will be accelerated effectively, and at this stage automatic pump must be used in pumping.
