Scandia-stabilized zirconia co-doped with $CeO_2$ is a promising electrolyte for intermediate temperature SOFC, but still shows rapid degradation during a long-term operation. In this study, $CeO_2$ (1 mol%) as a stabilizer is partially substituted with lanthanum oxides ($M_2O_3$, M=Yb, Gd, Sm) to stabilize a cubic phase and thus durability in reducing atmosphere. 0.5M0.5Ce10ScSZ electrolytes were prepared by solid state reaction and sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 10 h to produce dense ceramic specimens. With addition of the lanthanum oxide, 0.5M0.5Ce10ScSZ showed lower degradation rates than 1Ce10ScSZ. Since $Gd_2O_3$ showed the highest ionic conductivity among the co-dopants, an electrolyte-supported cell with 0.5Gd0.5Ce10ScSZ was prepared to compare its long-term performance with that of 1Ce10ScSZ-based cell. Maximum power density of 0.5Gd0.5Ce10ScSZ-based cell was degraded by about 2.3% after 250 h, which was much lower than 1Ce10ScSZ-based cell (4.2%).

Scandia stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) is adapted for electrolyte material of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) because of its high ionic conductivity and chemical stability. ScMnSZ1 powder having a composition of $((ZrO_2)_{0.89}(Sc_2O_3)_{0.1}(MnO_2)_{0.01})$ is synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) method. Porous ScMnSZ1 powder is obtained by using a pore forming agent. Microstructure and morphology, particle size distribution of porous powder synthesized with 3wt% pore forming agent are investigated. Sintered ScMnSZ1 sample with ground fine powder are also investigated their microstructure and electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity of sintered ScMnSZ1 samples with ground fine powder was 0.082 S/cm, 0.127 S/cm and 0.249 S/cm at $750^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$, respectively.
An electrolyte supported SOFC cell was tested at $800^{\circ}C$ in air for 3600 h with an applied current density of $200\;mA/cm^2$ to examine possible cathode degradation issues. A scandium- stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) with additional manganese doping (ScSZ: Mn) was used as electrolyte. A strontium and copper-doped lanthanum ferrite (LaSrCuFe) and platinum were used as cathode and quasi-anode material, respectively. The DC resistance was logged over the complete testing period. Additionally, impedance spectroscopy was used from time to time to track changes of the cell in-situ. Post-test analysis of the cell using methods like scanning electron microscopy imaging and other electrochemical testing methods allow the identification of different degradation sources. The results indicate a promising combination of electrolyte and cathode material in terms of chemical compatibility and electrical performance.
To improve the performance of the anode-supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) which can be operated at an intermediate temperature, the functional layer (FL) is introduced on a anode substrate. And the scandia-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) and samaria-doped ceria (SDC) which have higher ionic conductivity and better chemical stability than yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) are used as material for the anode FL with the Ni, The fabrication process of anode-supported single cell with the anode FL was established and the power density of those was evaluated. As a result, the sample with anode FL (Ni-YSZ) has higher power density than normal cell. The single cell which was composed of the FL (Ni-YSZ) and electrolyte (YSZ) showed about $550mW/cm^2$ of the maximum power density at $650^{\circ}C$ and $1430mW/cm^2$ at $750^{\circ}C$ respectively, In case of the single cell using the ScSZ and SDC as anode FL, the performance of samples decreased rapidly and those showed unstable voltage during long-term test. In case of using methane as a fuel, the cell performance with each FL decreased comparing with $H_2$ fuel. In the region of a high current density, there are large concentration polarizations.

[ $(Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5})_{0.99}Co_{x}Fe_{1-x}O_{3-{\delta}}$ ] [x=0.8, 0.2](BSCF) powders were synthesized by a Glycine-Nitrate Process (GNP) and the electrochemical performance of the BSCF cathode on a scandia stabilized zirconia, $[(Sc_{2}O_3)_{0.11}(ZrO_2)_{0.89}]-1Al_{2}O_3$ was investigated. In order to prevent unfavorable solid-state reactions between the cathode and zirconia electrolyte, a GDC ($Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{2-{delta}}$) buffer layer was applied on ScSZ. The BSCF (x = 0.8) cathode formed on GDC(Buffer)/ScSZ(Disk) showed poor electrochemical property, because the BSCF cathode layer peeled off after the heat-treatment. On the other hand, there were no delamination or peel off between the BSCF and GDC buffer layer, and the BSCF (x = 0.2) cathode exhibited fairly good electrochemical performances. It was considered that the observed phenomenon was associated with the thermal expansion mismatch between the cathode and buffer layer. The ohmic resistance of the double layer cathode was slightly lower than that of the single layer BSCF cathode due to the incorporation of platinum particle into the BSCF second layer.
In this study, the effects of small amounts (${\leq}3\;mol%$) of Li doping on the sintering characteristics and electrochemical performance of $(ZrO_2)_{0.89}(ScO_{1.5})_{0.1}(CeO_2)_{0.01}$ (ScSZ) were investigated. By adding 3 mol% lithium, the densification temperature of ScSZ was reduced from the conventional temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. It was found that Li doping also led to changes in the Zr:Sc ratio at the grain boundaries. Correspondingly, the dispersion of lithium zirconia at the grain boundaries accelerated the growth of ScSZ grains and increased the grain boundary resistance at temperatures below $450^{\circ}C$. At elevated temperatures of $450{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, the electrical conductivity of the ScSZ after doping remained almost unchanged under air and reducing atmospheres. These results suggest that the addition of lithium is promising for use in low temperature co-firing of ScSZ-based components for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.
The phase stability and the Low Temperature Degradation(LTD) mechanism of Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals(TZP), sintered specimens of $Y_2O_3$-Stabilized Zirconia(2Y-TZP), doped with trivalent cations, were evaluated by investigating meachnical properties, Raman spectra, lattice parameter variation and the oxygen vacancy behavior under applied electric field. XRD observation was put forward on 2Y-TZP doped with trivalent cation whose ionic radii were larger than $Zr^{4+}(Sc^{3+},\;Yb^{3+},\;Y^{3+},\;Sm^{3+},\;Nd^{3+},\;La^{3+})$ up to 2 mol% and sintered at 1500 h for 1h. For $La^{3+}$ doping, the stability of tetragonal phase was degraded due to the formation of the pyrochlore phase $(La_2Zr_2O_7)$ as the dopant content increased above exceeded 0.5 mol%. As the dosage increased, tetragonal phase maintained for the case of $Sc^{3+}$, whose radius was similar to $Zr^{4+}$, on the other hand, the cubic phase was formed for the cases of $Yb^{3+},\;Y^{3+},\;Sm^{3+},\;Nd^{3+}$. As the radii of dopant cation increased, c/a ratio increased and it was experimentally observed that the amount of monoclinic phase decreased when the specimens were annealed at $220{\circ}C$ for 500 h.

Scandia ($Sc2O_3$)-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) electrolyte-supported symmetrical solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOECs), in which lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF)-gadolinia ($Gd_2O_3$)-doped ceria (GDC) composite materials are used as both the cathode and anode, were fabricated and their high temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) performance was investigated. Current density-voltage curves were obtained for cells operated in 10% $H_2O$/90% Ar at 750, 800, and $850^{\circ}C$. It was possible to determine the ohmic, cathodic, and anodic contributions to the total overpotential using the three-electrode technique. The HTSE performance was significantly improved in the symmetrical cell with LSCF-GDC electrodes compared to the cell consisting of an Ni-YSZ cathode and LSCF-GDC anode. It was found that the overpotential due to the LSCF-GDC cathode largely decreased and, at a given current density, the total cell voltage decreased, which resulted in the enhanced hydrogen production rate in the symmetrical cell.
